- Ityoṗya hoy des ybelish (Ethiopia, Be Happy) was the national anthem of the Ethiopian Empire during the rule of Emperor Haile Selassie from 1930 until the abolition of the monarchy by the Derg in 1975. Composed by Kevork Nalbandian in 1926, the anthem was first performed during the coronation of the Emperor on November 2, 1930.

But, there is more on the relationship between Armenia and Ethiopia; which goes beyond Christianity. The most important of all, in my view, is on how Armen teachers influenced Ethiopian music. One of the most influential of these teachers is Nerses Nalbandian. Nerses is one of the most venerated music teachers in Ethiopian music history. This man was born in Syria from Armenian family who have escaped the Armenian Genocide conducted by the Ottoman Turks, around 1915.
Growing as a stateless man, he was an orphan in Jerusalem when Haile SelassieI, the king of Ethiopia, was visiting there. The king noticed him and his friends, 40 young boys who were singing in the streets of Jerusalem in a band. Since the king was impressed by their talent, he decided to adopt them.
Nerses’s uncle grew to be the first composer of the first Ethiopian national anthem which served as our anthem until the end of the king’s era, 1974. In the meantime, Nerse’s family, moved to Ethiopia, probably by the invitation of the king. Nerse, by then a grown young man, was then assigned to teach music to Ethiopian young men. The result is, one of my favorite genres in Ethiopian music, Ethiopian jazz, was born out of the combination of the Armenian professional composition and Ethiopian folk music.

Interesting fact: The Anthem was composed by Gregor Nalbandyan, Armenian musician and composer and, the musicians of the Emperor's Royal Orchestra were 40 Armenian Orphans who after the genocide of Armenians by Ottoman Turkey in 1915, were placed in the Armenian Orphanage in Jerusalem, in the Armenian Quarters, then, on the Ethiopian Emperors request were brought to Ethiopia in the 1930s. Armenian and Ethiopian ties date back to times immemorial.
That's my grand-uncle Kevork Nalbandian. Emperor Haile Selassie sponsored the Arba Lijoch - Armenian genocide orphans in Jerusalem, the Karasun Mangants fanfare band, and Kevork Nalbandian was their bandleader. They were the official fanfare band of the Emperor in the beginning as well.
