- In part two of the Nerd's CD-I series he plays through Zelda: The Wand of Gamelon: one of the three Zelda games released on the system. After failed plans with Nintendo, Phillips had permission to use Zelda characters for the CD-I; however Nintendo had no input in the games development besides some character designs.
The game is a side-scroller in similar style to Zelda 2, but you play as Zelda instead of Link. Its frustrating controls, confusing layouts and bizarre animated cut-scenes have led to it being universally panned by critics and gamers alike.

Here's the problem with the CD-I. While it was *technically* a 32-bit console, its graphics capabilities were VERY VERY limited. It couldn't do any of the hardware sprites or background scrolling that the SNES or even the NES could do. All it had was basically a "dumb" framebuffer, and all the graphics had to be done by the CPU. This resulted in very low numbers of sprites with very limited movement, and either no background scrolling or very limited/jumpy scrolling, because there was no graphics hardware to handle it. Since it was 32-bit though, it had far more colors than the 16-bit systems. So...lots of pretty (but non-moving) backgrounds, with very simple sprites not even as complex as the NES.
So basically, it's a piece of shit.

I once found an emulator and the only ONLY control was my mouse. Moving left, right, and jumping with the mouse movement. Left click for the sword and the right for the other stuff. It was awful

I'm here for Arzette: The Jewel of Faramore. It's not stiff unlike Zelda CDI games in terms of Controls and Gameplay.
I'm glad that creator did improve what this game would be.
Here is the deal: They had 10 months and budget lesser than what Nerd got for single episode (Ok, Im exaggerating a little), they had to hire animators from Eastern Europe and all animations were done by freelancers in less than 5 months, Philips made requirement for FMV, so this is how it looks. Also the screen scrolls for only like 2 seconds

My god, why the hell did Philips made these disasters, the hit detection is broken, the platforms are impossible, the bosses are easy, the enemy's are hard, the controls suck, the enemy's hit you first, to stab someone to talk is stupid, try to stab a enemy but accidentally stab the NPC interrupts gameplay, just not able to hit up or down is stupid & just so much more problems with the Zelda games for the CDI, can you believe how much harder Castlevania would be if there was a Castlevania CDI game?!
You have to remember, Phillips wasn't all that experienced with game consoles. They were probably planning on earning some cheap money fast so that they don't go bankrupt or some shit like that.

Never mind the problems the avgn pointed out. What pisses me off is that the controller has 3 buttons and the 3rd button does nothing. Why the fuck wouldn't you move one of the functions of the 2nd button to the 3rd one?

Yeah, this game's controls suck. I think part of the problem was that they didn't have a standard controller, so they had to accommodate every possible controller layout. Maybe? I don't know.
Personally, I think this game may have needed *four* buttons. One for Jump, one for Sword, one for Item, and one for Menu. Leave Up for opening doors. But that wouldn't have worked so well for the three button controller the Nerd had :/.
