Do not do what he did with the wire wheel. Just use a razor blade that was hard to watch.
A razor blade works perfectly fine as well. Cheers!
Hahaha definitely.. he is a wire killer lol
I couldn’t believe my eyes when he used a wire brush with a power drill. This is next level stupid
💯 agreed! I was looking 👀 like 😬
I was hoping there wasn’t marring or scratches. Luckily there wasn’t any. That was insane to use a power drill just to remove the silicone that could have made it worse.
Thank you I was able to replace my car’s valve cover gasket with no problems. I appreciated the simple detailed explanation and camera angles they were extremely helpful and instrumental for me. You are appreciated.
You're welcome!
About how long did it take you? Do you need to let the RTV set for a certain amount of time before driving?
Thank You Sir ! One tip, please do not flip the dirty valve cover on top of the open engine. You may drop debris in the engine as you can see it in the video at 11:01 to 11:05. Very helpful video.
Thank you for the advice and the comment. Cheers!
Thank you! Your video with the addition of all the comments helped me change my valve cover gasket yesterday. No leaks after a drive, but I did trip the check engine light which also lit up the traction light, tire pressure light, and power steering light because I forgot to plug in a connecter. Rewatching the video solved that problem. Just need an OBD2 to clear the codes now
Glad our video helped. You can usually goto an auto parts store and use their scan tool for free. Otherwise just disconnect the battery for a couple seconds and reconnect. That usually resets the computer.
@@MobileCarMechanicthank you again boss! disconnecting the battery worked to clear the lights ❤
Why is this channel so underrated? You deserve more subscribers and views.
Thank you for the support.
Appreciate the step-by-step visuals, easy to follow and makes an intimidating (though easy in actuality) repair something I felt good about tackling. Some videos skip showing certain steps and makes it seem like the repair magically does itself. The fact that this video shows things like tools dropping was informative because it taught me there are certain parts of the repair prone to errors happening. Forewarned is forearmed, thanks coach!
Glad the video was helpful and thank you for the kind words. Cheers!
3 recommendations
1 is putting rtv on the gasket and cover before putting it on to secure it into place, not alot, just a light application
2 is USE A GASKET SKRAPER! No need to nick any aluminum
3 always be sure that you don't spray into the head, just apply enough to a old rag to clean the mating surface of the head to gasket.
Thank you for your recommendations. Cheers!
Respectfully, using wire wheel allowed tons of debris to enter the engine. Razor blaze or sandpaper, scrubbing outward would of been a better option. Other than that, great video and definitely a subscriber!
Thanks for the sub and comment. Definitely should have thought that one through but I did make sure to inspect for debris to ensure nothing was there off camera. Would advise a blade. Thanks again and Cheers!
Excellent video with easy to follow step by step instructions. I followed along and was able to make the replacement on my accord myself - saving me a couple hundred dollars! Thanks!
Glad the video helped.
I did the same, it was a awesome video👍
Great video, gets the major bases to the point that anyone with a little aptitude should be able to handle this job. I'd also recommend a small extendable mechanics mirror, you can see if the gasket is indeed seated on the backside because as you showed....it's a bugger keeping it in the valve cover. Thanks again for diving in and sharing your experience.
Thank you for the kind words, A mirror definitely would help with the rear portion of the valve cover. Cheers!
Great work! I love the details and steps taken to show the old and new replacement.
Thank you, Glad the video was helpful!
Thanks for putting this together. I just did the valve cover gasket (along with the seals and grommets) on my 2004 Honda Accord. This is probably the same difficulty, but in a different way than the 2004 Honda. With the 04, I pulled the power steering hose away from the power steering unit since it went over the corner of the cover. I don't see that issue here. But for this generation, there's a LOT more electrical connections to disconnect (but at least the power steering hose isn't an issue).
Is there a reason you didn't do the grommets and seals while you had it off? One criticism would be cleaning parts sitting inside the car. You could have easily gotten brake fluid/cleaner on your paint. Far better (in my opinion) to put things on the ground, away fro the car, to clean them. Think I'll pull the negative battery connection as well to be on the safe side. All in all, nice work!
Thanks for the input. So the valve covers on this year have the spark plug tube seals integrated in them and only way to replace them would be replacing the whole valve cover itself. No leaks in the tubes. Thanks again for the comment. Always striving to do better. Cheers!
The generation varies. Multiple years and variations. Not sure if multiple manufactures. Went to Honda and provided vin which indicated the model owned didn’t have replaceable tube seals. I have a 2000 civic and know those seals need to be replaced
Thank you for this great video. This video gave me the confidence to do the job myself. Job done ✅
Glad I could help
Bro:
What are the torque specifications for the perimeter bolts for the valve cover gasket? I would use plastic razor blades to remove the RTV because the aluminum surfaces scratch easy. Place a towel over the entire timing chain bay so that U dont drop a screw, bolt into the timing chain bay. The Honda dealer in LA charges $1600 bucks for this job. Thanks for sharing knowledge.
Great video. My one tip that I didn't see anyone else say is when you're breaking loose all 10 valve cover bolts just go around and do it, then take extension and finish them all by hand instead of taking the extension off & on the ratchet 10 times. Something iv learned over the yrs to save time without compromising quality of work
Thanks for the tip! It’s a tedious take removing the bolts and anything to speed it up helps out. Thanks for the comment. Cheers!
Ran to the comments as soon as I seen the drill 😂
The drill will not be making an appearance lol. Cheers!
I have a 2014 Honda Accord EX-L. I will be doing this very soon. I noticed mine was leaking a few days ago.
Follow our video and you will be golden!
Make sure you buy gasket from dealer, the dealer gasket,is a little, thicker Than the auto store gasket
Thanks for the tip, we bought it from rockauto since it included spark plug tube seals which we didn’t end up needing them since they were built into the valve cover
always use OEM parts when working on a Honda.
Pieces of debris went in to the engine, covering the entire area is a must bro.
Will do. Thanks!
@X XL Give him a break he is just an amateur
How did you remove the oil from the 3rd spark plug? Didn’t see that.
I took out the spark plugs off camera and put a paper towel over the tube and cranked the engine to blow the oil out. Did that multiple times while holding the gas pedal down to the floor to prevent fuel from being injected.
Thank you
Good work brother! Thanks for sharing. It seems fairly simple.
You bet. Thank you!
Very nice instructional video.
Can you do one on how to replace an alternator on Hondas?
Yes, soon. Great suggestion.
Here it is: th-cam.com/video/omfip40c9AU/w-d-xo.html
@@MobileCarMechanic
I just finished doing the valve cover gasket on my Honda. The video was abt 90% the same bc my car is a CRV. The video helped a lot. 🤝
@laviebanale did you change your spark plug seals also?
@@gameemulator2448 I actually didn’t bc they were in good condition but to be safe I really should have.
Great instructional video, what were your torque specs for the valve cover?
7 N-m or 5 lbf-ft
Going to try at replacement, trying to find out where the leak is coming from first. It looks super easy especially for a woman trying for the first time
Where have you noticed the leak? A good way to try to find leaks is to use an engine degreaser to clean all the dirt and grease off and then drive it for a couple days to see if you any new oil stains which may help you find where it’s coming from. You got this! Cheers!
Very clear and helpful but one thing ? Didn’t show when you tighten the cover bolts and how much torque,,, thank you so much.
Thank You, The torque specs for the valve cover are 7 N·m or 5 lbf·ft
Question: If the ignition coils have oil all over them, should you replace the coils or is it okay to just clean them up before putting back?? Also, if you have a faulty valve cover (oil leak) should you replace the spark plugs too?
Clean them up with brake cleaner and you should be good go. If you continue to have misfires then replace the coils. Spark plugs should be cleaned too. Oil will cause spark to not be delivered to the coil and plug.
Thanks I have honda accord 2017 an is leaking with your help a do it myself. I appreciate 🙏
Thank you!
Thank you for the effort.
Do you happened to know what is the purpose of the little squarish grommet gasket on the inner middle of the cover? It looks like it communicates with a port going down the block and it has an evacuation channel in the cover. Is this the EGR re-circulation channel?
Not sure to be honest, I know the red piece is integrated into the cover which I believe is the PCV valve, the cover on the right side of the engine covers the high pressure fuel pump. I don’t see the squarish grommet in the middle that you are talking about.
Thank you for responding.
At 15:40 the small squarish gasket can be seen on the valve cover close to cyl 2-3. There is another evacuation port at 11:25 going toward the high pressure fiul pump one toward the main air duct and one back to the intake manifold. Im trying to understand how this valve cover integrated PCV system works. From which port and in what direction vapors and fresh air is moving? This 2.4l engine has no EGR valve at all?
Great video and great editing.
Thank you!
I would do the wire brush and drill, also spray the shop towel with the brake parts cleaner not the valves. Before all of this use a leaf blower and brush off any stubborn deberes, also are the bolts aluminum and need to be replaced? other wise great video.
Thanks for the tip. The bolts aren’t aluminum and don’t need to be replaced. You can reuse the bolts. Cheers!
My car needs that gasket, but what’s the difference if I don’t put/use Black adhesive sealant?? & Brake Cleaner doesn’t affect the Engine?? Thank you
The sealant is needed for the gaps on the cylinder head where the timing cover is. The gasket won’t seal it as well if you don’t apply it.
Excelente, el mejor que vi fue el tuyo, gracias
Thank you.
How long do you wait to run your car? I’ve seen conflicting comments anywhere from 2hrs to 24hrs
It depends on the RTV that you are using. The right stuff will dry in an hour. Standard RTV is generally 24 hour dry time.
I'm liking your slow paced videos. Very helpful. Can you do one on a intake valve cleaning since they get mucked up with the GDI design? I have a 2014 Accord.
I’m not sure when I will be able to create a video. But will keep you posted when we do. How many miles do you have on your accord?
@@MobileCarMechanic 103K
Hi great video, I followed the video instructions and when I was done there were no warning lights on my dash and a few hours later when I turned my car all the lights went on … please help
It would be a good idea to double check your connections, but I would advise to get the code read to give you a direction to the problem. Cheers!
Excellent and very detailed video. Thank you! This is how you make a video. I am subscribed! Look forward to more of your videos.
I appreciate your kind words. Will continue to make detailed video. Thank you!
I got a P0304 check engine light after I replaced mines, any idea why?
Unplug and plug cylinder 4 ignition coil. Either plug is loose connecting to coil or the coil is bad. Also check to see if oil is in the spark plug tube.
Any tips to remove the bolts on the beauty cover (where it says Earth Dreams) if they just keep spinning and doesn't come out? Have one bolt with that issue
I’d try to lift up the cover while removing the nut to apply resistance to the stud that’s spinning to see if it comes off
Same any update on how you got it out?
@@MobileCarMechanic Tried this, no luck. What's amazing is that the PCV bolt on the valve cover is doing the same thing.
You’re a master! Thank you so much!
You're welcome!
Great video and it is gonna help me to change mine this weekend, but I have a question. Do I need to drain the oil from my engine? I just change the oil 2 weeks ago, thank u in advance and You just gain a new subscriber,, thank U
Thanks for Subscribing! You don’t need to change your oil. Just make sure you don’t get any dirt while your replacing the gasket and you’ll be fine. If you do manage to get dirt in there I’d recommend cleaning that up and probably doing another oil change.
@@MobileCarMechanic thank u
Can you do a video replacing the fuel injectors on the same car
If by chance I get an accord of this gen for sure.
Do you recommend to put RTV to the gasket to keep in place ?
It won’t hurt but it’s not required and will make more of a mess
Excellent Video.. detailed and accurate. Thanks.
Thank you. Cheers!
Incredibly helpful video. Thank you sir!
Glad to help. Thank you!
Thank You for the Video! Great breakdown! Where did you get your strut bar?
The strut bar is stock and came with the car. Not sure if this applies to the sport. What model do you have?
That was outstanding. Well done. Thanks
Thank you!
Just did this, valve cover should come off pretty easily, there is also a bolt under the plastic heat shield, my rubber grommet got stuck to it and I couldn’t find it
Did the grommet not get stuck to the plastic shield?
Dremel with a wire wheel would be more surgical but I'd still be afraid of getting debris into the engine.
You will need to be careful. Made sure no debris was in there off camera. A razor blade will suffice
Hello Mobile car Mechanic, I have a honda 2014 accord V6 engine. I noticed a transmission leak & my mechanic says its from the seal in the transmission , does he need to bring down the transmission to fix the seal
Is it the seal between the transmission and engine commonly referred as the rear main seal? If yes then transmission has to be removed to replace. If it’s axle seals then no
How come you didnt use a blade to clean the surface off the valve cover and and then use a light sandpaper also you should apply a little of silcon on the gasket so it doesnt come off .Anyway great video 5 star
The valve cover didn’t have any silicone on it, just the mating surface on the cylinder head. Applying silicone would have made it easier to make the gasket stay in place but it wasn’t necessary. Thanks for the comment! Cheers
Question if you see this. I have 2015. The dealer told me you can’t change the tube seals for the spark plugs? Is that true? I didn’t see you change them on camera at least so I’m just wondering. Thanks
They are correct! It’s integrated to the valve cover which is why we didn’t change it either
What did you do about the oil in the spark plug tube
How long we can drive after replacing the valve gasket?
I’d advise waiting an hour or 2.
I have a 2017 accord sport at 118k miles, should i consider replacing it even though i don’t see oil leak?
If you don’t see a leak I would wait until you do before replacing.
I thought brake cleaner is not good for plastics ? Or is that rubber I’m thinking about
It will stain but not ruin it. It didn’t mess up the valve cover.
Bro the gasket cover seal keeps falling off. Almost feels like its to big but it fits perfect
Yes it does
I did everything except that @9:09 clip wont come off. I spent 2 hrs figuring out how to get those out. I gave up. Any tips on that??
You can still remove the valve cover but make sure to turn it towards the firewall/windshield and then you can access the wings on the clip to pinch them and remove it.
Wen one of the spark plug seals leaked was it instantly wen u seen the leak ?
I didn’t see it right away. I replaced the valve cover gasket as it was leaking. It was then I saw the spark plug seal was not sealing as it had collapsed for some reason. I adjusted it and it’s been good so far. It’s not replaceable on this year as it’s built in to the valve cover. So far so good. A spark plug tube seal was only leaking on one cylinder. Since it wasn’t sealing I took out the spark plugs and pulled the fuse for the fuel pump so that I could crank the engine to blow out the oil. Had a paper towel over the tubes so it wouldn’t spray everywhere
It's a shame that Honda ended up doing what everyone else. Saving money by putting plastic valve covers, that's the reason why they leak.
It’s a bummer but honestly it leaks the same way as any valve cover gasket, just sucks they integrated the PCV into the valve cover! Even my civic with a metal cover leaks after sometime with a rubber valve cover gasket. Rubber degrades overtime!
So somehow one of the bolts holding down the earth dream cover that covers the coils, is stripped and I can’t get the bolt out now. It just keeps turning and turning. Any advice on how to get the bolt out?
Honestly I haven’t had that happen with this car. But you can try lifting the cover to apply tension to the bolt to see if it helps. Otherwise we may need to somehow heat up the nut without melting the cover or breaking the cover off and extracting it after. If it’s spinning the recessed thread that holds it in place is moving and maybe you can try to lift up on the nut somehow to pop it out the recessed thread.
@@MobileCarMechanic thanks boss! I was able to get the coils out to get this project done. But in the process of putting everything back together, the plastic cover broke. Lol. I’m gonna try to get the bolt removed like you suggested and order another earth dream cover via eBay.
Use razor blade to get rid off remaining residue. And clean the calve cover in a different area. With a wet coil meaning the gasket where the coil sits needs to be replaced. Other than that you did awesome. Two thumbs up
Thanks for the comment. We couldn’t replace the spark plug seals as they are integrated into the valve cover. You will need to replace the valve cover to replace the seals.
use a plastic blade though. Metal razor blades can gouge the mating surface and oil will find its way out!
Is there a rear and front gasket?
Only if you have the V6 accord.
How many miles did your car have ? Im at 170K and i seen some oil seeping thru but not enough to drip to the ground.
I believe around 120-130k is when we did this as we saw seeping but wasn’t too bad.
Spray brake cleaner right into an engine!?! Wire wheel to remove old dried silicone? Wouldn't want you working on any vehicle i own! Won't mention the simple trick everyone seems to know but you on how to keep a rubber gasket in place.
Thanks for your feedback. Cheers!
I like your videos they are very easy to follow. Can you do a replacement of struts for 2014 Honda Accord ? That would be very helpful.
At the moment I don't have a 2014 Honda Accord that I could work on. Maybe in the near future. Be on the lookout for the video. Thank you for your feedback.
I had an issue with error messages and camshaft position sensor
Sounds like you forgot to connect the plug to the camshaft sensor which is on the driver side by the valve cover.
After I finished my power steering light, traction control , and tire pressure light was on. Does anyone know what it could be?
Double check and review the video for the connections that were disconnected.
@@MobileCarMechanic Thank you I missed a connector, I’m gonna drive it to see if the lights go off.
I did this and now I have a P0420 code for the cat converter
I’d double check that all wires are connected as well as hoses. How many miles are on your car?
@@MobileCarMechanic 100k
Holy shit the wire brush is crazy work😭
This helped me out and gave me the confidence to do it myself. Until I snapped a bolt off in the engine 😢
Where did you snap the bolt?
Why not replace spark plug hole seals too?
Because on this year (2016) they integrated them into the valve cover. Have to replace the valve cover to replace those seals
Do you happen to know if it’s the same for a 2017 Honda Accord Sport ?
what about that square gasket in the middle for pcv? why not replace that one too?
You didn’t disconnect the throttle body connector did you?
I did not. If you only disconnect what’s on the video that is all you will need to free the harness and give you that space to remove the valve cover without obstructions.
@@MobileCarMechanic great advice ! appreciate the fast reply also !!
Excelente trabajo! Gracias por compartir experiencia.
Me alegro de que haya ayudado. Gracias.
Is this a 2.4 liter engine?
Yes
Anyone know what the torque specs are for the valve cover bolts?
7-Nm 5 ft lbs
Followed this video, now all my check lights are on, how to fix?
I would double check to see if you didn’t leave any wires disconnected. If you have a code reader it may help direct you where you need to look. Also make sure there isn’t any oil where the spark plug tubes are.
@@MobileCarMechanic for f sake, its 1 wire forgot to connect.... Cheers
It happens to the best of us. Glad it was an easy fix. Cheers!
How long would this take
This took me 30-45 min
All kinds of stuff entered the engine. Drill not necessary, and more work than it should be. Plastic scraper is all that’s needed. And the spark plug gaskets just pull out with a screw driver and pliers. 🤦🏼♂️
Yes you can use a plastic scraper. Made sure nothing had entered. Some models of this generation accord have integrated spark plug tube seals in which this one did. I ordered the kit with the seals and unfortunately couldn’t replace them. Even verified via VIN at the parts desk at Honda which stated that it was not replaceable.
Why did someone say you need to adjust something prior to completing the job?
Can’t remember honestly.
Hey, I got a P0507 code after this, did anybody else get this? Everything is reconnected. The light comes and goes.
Try this procedure to relearn idle values after you have double checked connections. You will need to clear the light with either a scan tool or disconnect the battery for 30 seconds. You do not need an HDS which is a higher end scan tool. May need to repeat procedure multiple times. imgur.com/a/puckNYl
Really confused on which of these have tube seals. Seems weird that your 2016 doesn't need them but it sounds like the 2017 does? SO strange Honda would just do this for a single year unless it didn't work out for them. Looks like I'm just going to tear my 2017 apart to figure out exactly what I need before ordering more stuff.
It is weird, I had a 2013 that i worked on recently and the tube seals were replaceable, They used small torx screws if i remember correctly to hold them in place.
@@MobileCarMechanic I just today pulled the cover on my 2017 and they are not replaceable. The coils are dry so no leak at least.
Do you have the sniffles young man ?
Haha no sniffles. Car work gets me going.
Good video all in all. But lost me at the wire wheel.
Thanks for the comment. We did make sure to check the engine for debris and cleaned. Using a razor blade would be advised
Watching the old RTV fly all over the exposed valve train with the drill stressed me out. I've found a fresh razor blade is sufficient.
Razor blades are sufficient. Made sure to clean everything off camera. Thanks for the comment!
I was charged 350 for this bs easy task while I was away & had my mom bring it to the dealer 350!🥶
Yep, it's not a tough job. Dealers love to overcharge you.
Can you start the car right away. Or are you really supposed to wait 3 hrs?? Because I got things to do and places to be after the replacement lmao! FR
It’s recommended that you wait otherwise it’s going to leak as it won’t dry in time and then the oil will contaminate it and make it not cure. So do this when you have free time or have another vehicle.
This video had me cringing. 1. Using a wire wheel to clean off the gasket residue and 2. pouring the brake cleaner ( with a mix of old oil from the valve cover) onto the driveway floor.
At least you get a new valve cover with oil spots on the floor now. I'd be livid
Thanks for the feedback, Cheers!
This kind of stuff drives me nuts. Using a wire brush with wire pieces breaking off and flying into the engine. OMG
I definitely should have used a razor blade but did check to make sure nothing was in the oil and head off camera.
Thanks
Glad our video helped. Cheers!
Probably the gasket used is made in China, my 2012 Camry still have no leak until now.
We did use an aftermarket one before the original, definitely failed fast. How many miles are on your Camry?

Gave me a heart attack with those wire wheels. Don’t do that please. Also spray the cloth then wipe not directly to the mating surface. Goodness!!
Thanks for the feedback. Wire wheel won’t be making anymore entrances.

I was with you until you used the wire wheel
Thanks!
So the dealership and went through basically tighten every damnable in that damn car to the point where I need a breaker bar on every bolt the stupid little plastic piece on top I had to rip off then take off the bolts because I was afraid I was going to rip some shit off my damn oil drain plug plus so fucking impacted on I had to leave it take my impact and work with it oil filter dude was so packed on there that it took me and my dad and the cousin to basically move this bitch out the way and we just said fuck it in stamp the oil filter with a screwdriver put a handle on there then putting extension handle on there than just every one of us has grabbed onto just pulled it off and the car has not been turned on for almost 3-4 hours
Sorry to hear that. I’d be super annoyed. I feel your pain. Lots have words have been said off camera for some of the dumb things I’ve experienced when fixing things on cars. Hopefully it will be easier next time. Cheers!
Homie said you don’t need to change the o rings. Yet one was full of oil lol
The spark plug tube seals are built into the valve cover. Realized that one of them collapsed. When I put it back in its position the oil stopped leaking into the spark plug tubes. Cleaned it off camera. All is good now. Cheers!
Lose the wire wheel and drill motor.
