He was not necessarily thought of as the best player on his team (Ben Wallace's defense got more media attention, Rip Hamilton was a far better pure scorer, and Billups rarely made the spectacular play) and also did not take over any of the 5 games in that series. Not his game. 1981 Cedric Maxwell - wait a minute, what? How does Young Larry Bird not win this? Didn't you see him rebound and score off his own missed jumpshot in game 1? Didn't he put game 6 away in Houston? Was he really not the best player in this series? If Bird was going to miss out on a Finals MVP to a teammate, you would expect maybe McHale, Parish or Dennis Johnson to get it, maybe even Bob McAdoo or Bill Walton. But Cedric Maxwell? He was a grinder, a solid role player. Not a guy to steal the spotlight from Larry freaking Bird.

Duncan wasn't likely to force the issue the Spurs played at 80% and swept the Cavs. In 2005 the Spurs were up against it vs Detroit and Duncan really did have to make it happen although it was not pretty.
All that being said going in you would think Duncan would win it and Duncan was better than his numbers reflect as was the case after 2003/2004 when Manu and TP reached star status.
I think Jerry West il shouldn't be included, at the time there was no precedent for the award to go to a player on the winning team. In the case of those teams it is believed that the Celtics were much deeper than the Lakers and thus would have had to share the stats and plays whereas the Lakers only had a couple of guys at that same level.
