    Great video. I am building a house right now and getting ready to start siding and trim on the outside. For the porch ceiling and soffits around the house I am using white vinyl soffit panels. I am trying to figure out easiest way to wrap the exposed wood beams around the porch and what pieces of vinyl should I use to do that ? two L shaped pieces or basically fascia trim with one on each side of beam and flat stock vinyl supported by the leg of the L pieces ?

    i love your videos. i'm getting ready to start siding my garage on the driveway side. when installing the horizontal j channel against the concrete do you drill weep holes in it? Also when installing the bottom j channel into the vertical j channel of a door do you have a tab on the vertical j channel that sits in the horizontal channel or do you cut all of these joints flush to allow water to drain out of the channel onto the concrete? thank you for your help and keep up the great videos.

    Josh, Do you need Utility strip or J Channel around New Construction windows? Or do you just have the siding go right up to the channel of the window? If not mistaking I think you will at least need it at the top and bottom.

    What if the gap at the top of the deck is larger than the height of the j channel? I'm going to be using double 4 inch siding. So the gap could be anywhere from no gap to up to 7 15/16 inches.

    I had a jog that didn't come close enough for this technique. It was right in the middle of a "board" on my double dutch lap. I ended up using the channel that is for doing the cuts under windows all along the bottom. There was one with two slots available for my siding, so it works if you are in the shallow or deep part of the siding. But I had to use this instead of starter strip. I marked where the first piece would hit and then cut the siding to match that height, made the tabs in the cut side and it snapped in firmly with the tabs. I had J channel on the bottom but it was too loose and flappy with J channel and the starter strip didn't allow a good way to tuck the top of the half piece in. Maybe we need another video on what to do if your porch is not conveniently located to use j channel at the bottom?

    • @TheExcellentLaborer
      @TheExcellentLaborer  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      In that case you would use J channel around the bottom and rip the siding down to size and it will act as the starter strip. I hope that helps!

      In some cases , you'll need to put undersill trim upside down in the j trim to slide the sharp edge of the siding into if you have to rip it. Makes a very straight bottom edge.

  • @JeremiahRyburn
    @JeremiahRyburn 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

    why bother with the starter strip? why not rip the bottom off the siding to match the slope
