    I love how they show the issues and preparation. That polarizes people into "I could do this!" and "I'll never do this!". This distinction is important in deciding which jobs you want to agree to complete over the next 2-3 years.

      Same here. I guess I'm going to have to just rip a piece down and make more problems for myself. I can't find a way to start it. I also think they used plywood instead of furring strips, so I'm hoping I'll be able to find the rafters.

      For the vinyl ceiling, squeeze two sections together at their seam, then get your fingers in there to pry them apart. Once you do that, the vinyl pieces separate fairly easily. Don’t be shy; you have to manhandle it a bit to make it work.

    Nice work! The home owner may want to also find a way to secure the swing to keep it from swinging too far back hitting the window/window-screen... also in case of heavy wind/storm.

    • @RoastBeefSandwich
      @RoastBeefSandwich 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Could simply tie a rope between the porch rails and the chains, will secure it plenty for a storm. I think it would take a pretty big storm to damage the window though. As far as during swinging, common sense will keep the window safe.

    • @bmwrulesforeternity5218
      @bmwrulesforeternity5218 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      my thoughts exactly. I would think NOT. a swing BED or a swing COUCH is at least 5 times the WEIGHT of that little piddly bench that they are hanging in THIS video. I have an already made swing couch that weighs probably 220 pounds .. but I am just guessing .. so I am going to try to WEIGH it .. and me thinks i need to go WAYYYyyy up into the truss assembly and get a proper bracketing system so that the weight will be distributed amongst the entire truss structure. With one adult on the swing couch = likely 550 pounds ... with 2 adults on my swing couch = 750 lbs .. and with 3 adults on the couch = 1,000 lbs. And this isn't even considering the torque pressures of the minor back and forth swinging action.

    Anyone, does it matter if the swing is installed parallel to the structure ( in this case entire load will be on the same structure) or it needs to be perpendicular like suggested in this video ? It is not clear if the suggestion was because of the swing placement preference ( aesthetically) or from load bearing standpoint of the structure. Thank you

    A spacer should have been installed between the bracket and the structural support. That way the bracket can be tightened solidly and securely to the structure. Spacers can be made from galvanized pipe - 3/8” or 1/2” pipe nipple (depending on your lag bolt diameter) and can be cut with a hacksaw to the right length. (The distance from the structure to the bottom if the soffit material)
    You’re a good man, Tom, but I’ve been doing this work longer than you! And I’m from Pennsylvania, so....... 😎

    • @GARDNSOUND
      @GARDNSOUND ปีที่แล้ว

      Yea, and these should have been through bolts, and not lags. Lags will always eventually pull out. The structural material will have to fail first in order for a through bolt to give.

      Do it right, do it once. Porch swings are legacy. Well worth it.

    extra washers on the other side panel could have been added for the swing join, then he could have tightened it up snug to the frame

      Right! It seems that leaving it loose is asking for trouble. Great way to wallow out the holes in those brackets. And was it me, or did they look plastic? If they are plastic, that extra play will have those lag bolts wearing through those brackets in no time.

      Really? Maybe what they should have done is built an entirely new house that was purposely designed around hanging the swing.

      @@ipKonfig, Or people should use common sense and realize that: one of those 5/8 lag screws would hold 4 people, that the bracket is STEEL and not plastic, lol You cannot tighten the bracket solid to the vinyl because it needs to expand and contract. And last but not least, stop worrying about the freaking window !!!

    how come when he is on the ladder there is no pen in his pocket but when he comes down there is a pen in his pocket. And why does he have a gray t shirt under his blue shirt when he didn't have one on before...don't you love it when they make a job look like it only takes fifteen minutes but actually takes them 3 days...

    the space needs a spacer. it cant hang free with space between the bracket and the wood. it will pivot the lag bolt out. if tight, it would not. should use a spacer to secure it tightly and cut out the vinyl to mount to wood,not vinyl with space.

    I have REALLY enjoyed this show for years. But I wish they would dispense with the 80's style fake greetings at the beginning of each segment. It's 2019...almost no one thinks that is literally the first time the people have met the ATOH expert. Just introduce the homeowner and let them describe the problem...you don't need to pretend.

    If it were centered between the windows you wouldn't have to worry about kids smashing the window when they're roughhousing on the swing.

    I would of used a 2x6 or 4x4 to bridge the joists.NEVER hang a swing from a 2x4!
