  • The Olympus c5050 Zoom is nearly 20 years old. At it's time it was a high-end camera for enthusiasts. Now you can get it for very little money. It's old and sluggy with low resolution. But is it worth? Oh yes! If you can handle it, you get so nice pictures, which are already good enugh for the most things. It's a challenge and shows you, how low you can go.

I had one of these back in 2007. Took it backpacking all over the world with me in 2009. Great memories and a great piece of kit....

I have it since 2003 and still working perfectly! I used it two days ago for studio photos because it's lens is very good in also in low light. You may notice that is a little slow action compared to the latest compact cameras but that is not a real big problem if your model is advised not to move during shooting. The 5 megapixel resolution also is not a big problem unless you want to enlarge more than A3 or enlarge fine details. There are very good upscaling tools around. Today we are used to 20 megapixel compact cameras but if using higher ISO there is more noise than this camera, because the same sensor dimension must hold musch more smaller pixel in a 20 megapixel compared with only 5. I also love the optical viewfinder instead of the small LCD screen. Optical or oled viewfinders seems today something only for high price camera today!

Olympus made some of the finest cameras. I have several including this one.

My latest purchase of this older camedia arrived in the post this morning and I can't wait to try out the C5050. I've found that giving yourself in camera limitations can improve how you shoot. Particularly close up, still lifes.

Hope you like it, it's all very slow and needs some time to get in it. The C5050 has many options in the settings, more, than I expected, really "pro" ;) so the limitations are more the time the camera needs itself...

I bought this cámara in 2003 and used it for many years. The only reason I stop using this camera was because my son grew to the point that he would not stay still long enough for the slow auto focus. Maybe it got slower because of how much love it got.
Through the many cameras I have owned, I still long for this camera. Its lower contrast and lower saturation pictures and 5 megapixels still have hold on me. It can’t compare to my canon R5, but my R5 can’t put out the flame I still hold for my old C5050.
My sons asks why I take so many photos and sometimes wonder if it’s because I am still trying to recreate what my little old c5050 created for me so many years ago.

Bought one two weeks ago. I loved it but it had a broken condensator that drained the batteries so fast that I could only take 20 pictures before it would need new batteries. So I returned it. But it’s a really fun camera with great colors and enough options to customize to your needs.

This is one of my favorite cameras. I also have the C-5060 which is slightly bigger but has a wider (27-110mm f/2.8) lens compared to the C-5050 (35-105mm f/1.8 lens). i generally like to shoot with a wider angle lens but the C-5050 has that great bright lens which is great for night shots. Both wonderful angle lens but the C-5050 has that great bright lens which is great for night shots. Both terrific cameras.

It is not a "high end enthusiast camera" it is a Professional Camera. Just watch at 0:24 🙂😉
I bought mine in january 2003 and I still have it. Picture quality is good, I have loads of A-4 prints that are really good. The problem today is the shutterlag and the poor high ISO performance. The camera still has a professional feel to it, actually one of the best compacts I ever laid my hands on. Would I recommend it today? No, unless you get it for nearly nothing. Mine is now for decoration to remind me og my first digital camera. My analog camera back the was a Canon F-1, so the change to digital was huge.

Every camera has, imitations but that forces you to be more creative and more selective with shots and to push things to see how far you can go in various situations with your camera.

Of course, the marketing hype wants you to keep purchasing new gear making one believe that more numbers and features make for better photos. In some cases maybe but not always.
