Gary Richrath was one of the most underrated guitarists to ever tune up. I saw REO six times in this era and they never disappointed. They were always just that good. I think you might have reacted to the studio version of Golden Country, but in the live version on this live album, Gary just goes right off. I always said he was toying with that Les Paul like a cat toys with a mouse.
Gary always played with a big smile! I had the pleasure of meeting and talking to him, he was incredibly humble and seemed to really enjoy life! He is missed, but REO is still out there killing it every night!!
I grew up watching and listening to these guys. No matter where they played, small clubs or big venues, they were always awesome. Gary Richrath was the lead guitar player
When you bought tickets to these concerts you never felt cheated...You might have a buzz in your ears for a couple of days, but you never felt cheated lol ... Love you guys!!!
157 Riverside Ave is reference to a home in Westport, CT they rented while recording their 1st album at a studio 2 towns over in Bridgeport, my hometown.
Check out Sophisticated Lady with Terry Luttrell singing. You want keyboard/guitar work...this will make you wonder what happened to make REO go from a rare class of Rock to a top 40 teeny bopper band......oh yeah...$$$$$.
Gary Richrath, the lead guitarist, was born in my hometown, Peoria, IL and grew up in East Peoria. I went to Peoria High School in the mid-to-late 70's and REO played a lot of our mixers and dances before they hit it really big. They were local legends before they attained world-wide fame. I'm a fan of their rockier stuff. Their pop stuff less so.
Asia and BJ I just went to see REO on Sept.6th in Moline, Illinois .Styx played that night 🌃 also. I grew up on REO Speedwagon their best music was in the 70sand early 80s. With there original 🎸 guitar player Gary Richrath. I grew up in Galesburg, Illinois and Gary Richrath grew up in Peoria, Illinois. Most of the rest of the group were from Champaign Urbana, Illinois area . Kevin Cronin. The second singer in the group has done a great job keeping the band together all these years . But Gary Richrath will be missed RIP Gary. Dave Amato has been on the guitar 🎸 since Gary left the band But Gary was a very , very underated guitar 🎸 player . The You Get What You Played For is one of the best live albums ever recorded. So for now Peace ☮️ Out and God Bless
I returned home from Vietnam in 1970 and the rocks clubs in Milwaukee were just kickin' ass with the bands that were coming to town. I first saw REO at a club called Humpin' Hannahs on the East side of Milwaukee. We were actually going there to see a different band ( whose name I don't recall ) that was cancelled and the replacement band was REO SPEEDWAGON. What a night ! $5.00 cover charge 50 cent mixed drinks. Always went to see them when they were in town. Saw Styx , Cheap Trick and Joe Walsh at Hannah's and it was always a great time. Thanks for the memories Asia and BJ !!
So many great live albums from the mid 70s - Bob Seger Live Bullet, Kiss - Alive, J Geils - Full House and Blow Your Face Out, Frampton Comes Alive, Lynryd Skynryd - One More From the Road.
There is a longer live version of this on "A Decade of Rock and Roll" that I like even more than this one. In that one Gary calls and "interrupts" Kevin at a very inconvenient time. It is a lot of fun.
Kevin is a far better vocalist and story teller. Gary was killing it every night with that huge smile of his. Nobody enjoyed their "work" more than Gary and it showed in his charisma.
It’s interesting that you mention the energy, because in many of the variations of the live conversation, Kevin talks about the energy the band sends out to the crowd, and how they feel it coming right back to them on the stage from the fans. It’s cool you picked up on that.
This was an excellent live cut and Riding the Storm Out from this album was clearly superior to the studio version. This can accurately be called Boogie Woogie.
Gary Richrath was also a very nice and fun person. Setting up a show a friend started playing the keyboard and I was bringing a guitar up on stage and pulled it up and acted like I was playing it. I turned around and there was Gary and I about lost a load in my pants. He said go ahead and play man. I told him I had no idea how to play and apologized profusely. His response was hey it's okay we are here to have fun!
A really good REO Speedwagon song, especially live Also Check out Can't Fight This Feeling, Time For Me to Fly, Roll With The Changes, In My Dreams, Don't Let Him Go, Ridin' the Storm Out, Keep Pushin, Back on the Road Again, Keep the Fire Burning, In Your Letter, One Lonely Night, Golden Country, Tough Guys.
It's really strange to me becuz the vast majority of people have a view of REO a certain way, more the way they became when they became more commercial. Lot of love songs, and more formal...I guess. I'm not sure how to describe what it is. But, I started listening to them very early on. The original guitarist Gary Richrath, was a beast! But this gives an impression of the way they were early on. Very dynamic concerts, more raw, edgy. They became too polished. And, fired Gary!
I was a year out of high school and saw REO, Boston and Mother’s Finest in St Louis where REO recorded their concert to be used in part for their album You Get What You Play For! Was an incredible concert that left me hard of hearing for a few days lol. Great reaction from both of you. I love Asia’s humor/smile and BJ’s coolness
Thanks for the reaction Vid....I was in highschool when this Album came out, and Yes, you can still feel the energy they put forth on the recordings. It's hard to get a radio station play about a 9 minute song, so I had to buy the Album...:)
Yes! You definitely chose the correct version of this song! A great album, came out when I was in High School. Definitely check Ridin' the Storm Out from the same album! Awesome to hear you react to this!
One day my kids and I went through the drive thru and a storm was coming. When we got home we listened to Riding the Storm Out and we didn’t have TH-cam back then but I tried to include songs they liked. We danced all night. Miss those days. My son is now 22, Purdue graduate and living in Texas. My daughter is a senior and doesn’t like me much (mom daughter thing). Haha
Top 5 REO Speedwagon song for me. I would listen to this in the tub when I was a little kid. So amazing. 1. Roll With The Changes 2. Time For Me To Fly 3. Tough Guys 4. Music Man 5. 157 Riverside Ave.
Thank you for picking that one out! Haven't heard it in decades! I wish more people appreciated that song. I hate to sound old, but I feel sorry for people born too late for the rock concert era. This is a song that demonstrates why there is nothing like a live performance of artists doing things that no one else can do. Like you said, it's energy!
REO joined as a band in 1967. They got well known 70's and a bit 80's. They come from Illinois which is my state were I still live Chicago, Illinois. Saw these guys once live. Can you believe their not in the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame. They should be forsure....
Wife here..Saw these guys in 2001 with Styx and Eddie Money..( RIP)...AMAZING energy.., talent and catalog...!!!..."Dropping the Location"..U2 sooo cute. ..sooo talented and hilarious!!!🥰💞❤
REO Speedwagon was a great rock band in the early to late'70's.Gary Richrath and his guitar always had the crowd going.Gary wrote most of their best songs. Thanks for this and maybe do a reaction to them playing Golden Country live, where you can see Gary at his best. Thanks Asia and BJ,peace and love to you both!
You might want to check this out...Reo Speedwagon The Session PBS 1971 - Gypsy Woman. From their first and best album. I bought this album when it came out...being from southern IN REO was well known. This is back when they were still a "rock" band.
I saw them do this live in 1977 in Chicago at Soldier Fiels I was on the field about 50 ft from the stage The concert started with .38 Special, Journey, REO Speedwagon, Lynard Skynard and then Ted Nugent Actually it was 2 months before the plane crash in Magnolia Mississippi that took the lives of 3 of Lynard Skynard's bandmates.
😱 OMG !!! Finally... I can't believe you two are the only First Reaction Artists who played this version. I remember seeing these guys warming up the stage at Soldier Field Chicago, the summer of 77 just before Ted Nugent turned that place on its ear. They called that concert the, Superbowl of Rock. We were down on the field 40 yards in front the stage, surrounded by 65000 screaming fans still on a high from the high powered Boogie of REO Speedwagons closing number. 157 Riverside Ave. Their performance that day was ? Electrifying. I sure do miss those days. Thanks again, you two for playing this version. Its the best version they ever recorded.
Yeaaaaah guys, way to go!! One of my faves as a teen in the 80's...... Gary Richrath on the Les Paul...... he died from alcoholism related problems. Saw them at least thirty times over the years as they are from Rockford Illinois and played the bars here in Milwaukee before they hit it big!
Killer performance from REO,guys! And WAY more amped up than the original studio version from their debut album. One of the very best live performances that many don't know about comes from Texas band 'Point Blank'. Their 2 back to back live songs- Wrong To Cry, and Thank You Mama, are drop dead awesome! They were a hard rockin' boogie band in the ZZ Top vein. Thanks for the reactions! T
I went to see the Eagles in I think 1976 and REO Speedwagon opened for them. I was 12. Never heard of REO but by the end of their set they were my favorite band! The Eagles actually seemed like they were too mellow after REO's show. I don't think they opened for them for long.

REO Speedwagon was formed in 1967 but had their biggest hits in the 80's such as "Take It On The Run", "Keep On Loving You", "Can't Fight This Feeling", "In Your Letter", "Don't Let Him Go", "Keep The Fire Burnin'", "Sweet Time", "I Do' Wanna Know", "One Lonely Night", "Live Every Moment", "In My Dreams" etc.
I got a new name for Guitarist Gary Richrath--The shredder from Hell. I mean, this is just a 3-chord blues arrangement, but if that's all your gonna play is 3 chords, that's how ya play 'em!!
Never a major Speedwagon fan, but for a period of time there, they really rocked the airwaves. This is just straight ahead shit-kicking rock 'n' roll. This is the Speedwagon I prefer. Sure, the love hits were fine, but it's songs like this one that you get to hear their masterful musicianship. Kind of gives me those Lynyrd Skynyrd Call Me the Breeze vibes. Great song, testify!
GREAT!!! I First Saw Them In Chicago In 1969 For $1.00 For A Radio Station Promotion. Then A Couple Weeks Later The Guess Who For The Same Price. CRAZY!!

All true. I've seen.them 3 times myself
I saw them 3 times as well...back in the 70's, never disappointed, when music was awesome! Rock ON!

top 5 live album of all time
Gary Richrath never got his just due. Just a phenomenal player with a phenomenal style all his own. When he played you knew it was him.
100 percent all his own style i can plck him out in 3 notes
What!? Dude was an Icon! There were non better!... 🙄
One of my all time favorite live albums. Nearly every songs rocks out like this one. They must have been exhausted at the end of the show.
1000%

While we're landed on this album, you might as well enjoy Flying Turkey Trot! Gary Richrath was amazing!
I was thinking the same thing! VERY FUNKY!!!!!
I was a roadie for them on this tour , and they were really nice to us !
Watching you 2 beautiful youngsters enjoying this song from my way way back gives me much joy. God bless you both!

157 Riverside Ave is reference to a home in Westport, CT they rented while recording their 1st album at a studio 2 towns over in Bridgeport, my hometown.
When REO broke it big they were a rock band whose fan base was dope-smoking, long-hairs who wore jean jackets. At least that's how I remember it. 😉
Correct...that was us...lol....then REO went top 40 and lost most of us. "One Lonely Night" was the last straw....lol
By far the best album they ever put out. Love the jams between Gary Richrath on guitar and Neal Doughty on the keys.
You Can Tune A Piano… and Hi Infidelity are much better than this.
@@brianezell5790 The first album with Terry Luttrell is the best imo.

I would humbly add "Double Live Gonzo" by Ted Nugent, even if his current political views are out of step...

This is a song you should watch them perform live. One of my favorites from REO Speedwagon besides "Golden country"
REO’s lead guitarist on this record was Gary Richrath. Kevin Cronin is the lead singer you heard with the vocals.

Joe Walsh one made a reference to musicians in this era TESTIFYING...and each guy in the band, especially Gary Richrath was TESTIFYING here.

Such a fun live song. They were my first concert in 1979. At age 14. How did my parents I could go there?!
Asia & BJ, you'll love their smash hit "Can't Fight This Feeling"!! Kevin Cronin on lead vocals.
I think there is a different version on the album A Decade of Rock and Roll. it was my go to.
Yeah Gary calls HIM,as he’s gettin ready to get busy with his woman so Kevin has to give him a piece of his mind.
"Riding the storm out" live by REO is a mic dropper
REO was a great live Rock and Roll band. When Gary was forced out and Kevin took over they turned into a top 40 pop love song band. RIP Gary Richrath
Living in the Midwest I've seen REO 7 or 8 times. Every time is a party!
Gary sings "(Only A) Summer Love" AND shreds the solos. Give a listen to that one.
Gary Richrath was one Bad Boy on the guitar! Too under rated!
The Late Great Gary Richrath On Guitar!!!!!
I will take this REO song over any all day- any day forever
Love love love this jam
Blues and rock combined that group was great there guitar play was the best he could make it talk
Who does not love that bass riff in middle of song😂😂😂
