Now you've heard it, you really should go watch this man perform this song live...RIP Gary Richrath. In the 70's we had AOR (album oriented radio) and this song was on it alot.
I was 5 the first time I heard this in 76, I was instantly transported to images of revolution! 😂 I'm betting this wouldn't be playing on today's "radio"! 👍
This was on the radio back in the day! Gary Richrath was the real deal on guitar. RIP Gary. Kansas City has bragging rights to portions of this live album were recorded at Memorial Hall on Halloween back in the mid '70's! This album was huge not only for this song but many others. I have some found memories of this album playing in the background back then, but a gentleman never tells:)
I agree with everything you said about Gary RIP & the album. We here in St. Louis share your bragging rights. They were at The Arena, that was a great concert.
They absolutely played this on the radio. I was and still am a REO fan and loved this song. I saw them live when I was 16 and wanted to play the guitar the 40 years and here we are…. Rip Gary
Seen them in concert a few times and they always brought the heat. Richrath is the most underrated guitarist of all time. Golden Country Is my favorite song by them and yes that is saying something because they had many great songs.
THis album is such an Iconic masterpiece. I was fortunate to see them on this very tour in 76. Gary Richrath isOne of the Greatest Guitarist I've Ever Heard
The first time I heard this it was playing on the Himalayan Express ride at the county fair. I was 16. Me and a friend of mine sat on the ground outside that ride and listened to all of this album. I went and bought it the next day. Thanks for playing it!!
I was a disc jockey on a major market radio station from 1983 -1998, and we played this song. We didn't care about song length back then when it came to rock music. If it was good, we played it!
Hey Asia and BJ! REO Speedwagon was a powerhouse rock and roll band in the 70's and Gary Richrath was an amazing guitarist! You should check out 157 Riverside Avenue next or any of their live performances. Much love from SETX ✌️ ☮️ 🇺🇸 🎸 🎶 🎵
Damn, i'm just getting into these reaction videos. I grew up in East Peoria, Il. My neighbor was Eunice Ritchrath. Garys mother. My mom grew up & was best friends with his sister Sherry. Eunice was my babysitter. She was amazing & so proud of Gary. Her living room was full of gold & platinum records. Only met Gary a few times when he was in town, but he was super nice. He's the reason i started playing guitar. Very underrated! I think great mothers make great sons! She was great! I didn't have great father figures growing up, but i had some amazing women. Eunice Richrath is on top of that list. I miss them! Awesome reaction to a great band!!
It's Combination Of Guitar And Hammond Organ Hat's Off To Great Gary Richrath And Neal Doughty Two Of 3 Original Founding Members. R.I.P. Gary Farewell Neal Hope You Enjoy Retirement. REO Music Has Always Been A Big Part Of My Life.
I've been waiting for someone to react to this song and Asia and BJ never disappoint. Gary Richrath was self taught and the result is a very unique style and sound that is very difficult to replicate. The solo in this song showcases his talent very well. One thing I would recommend is listening to it again and focus on Gregg Philbin's bass line. It's just as crazy. Sadly, neither of these two legends are still with us.
REO at its finest. Criminally underrated guitar fills and solos. Sadly, the pop fans of the later REO never went back to hear what I call the real REO Speedwagon.
This was recorded in St. Louis and Boston opened the show. After Boston was done they had to beg people for quiet to start the recording and it took a while because they tore the roof off the place! Just an incredible experience.
fun fact this group was from my hometown little town outside of Peoria IL same place of Richard Pryor..my wife's aunt was in school with cpl of the band members when their were just a garage band....
Gary had a recognizable, unique style of playing that was dependent on his use of certain phrases, riffs, and "trickery." The more you listen to him, the more you learn to anticipate where his playing will take you, while at other times, he would throw you a curve, and take you somewhere else. He was a remarkable player who did not receive all the accolades he deserved, and it broke my heart to see him deteriorating physically as he aged. He was one of the guitarists I wanted to be, but never could have been in a million years.
Gary Richrath is my guitar hero. I play guitar to this day because of him. He used a wha wha pedal like no one else. thanks you guys! I love seeing people react to music that moved me and shaped my life.
Gary Richrath was a guitar GOD! I am so happy you've discovered his guitar playing. Sadly, alcoholism sidelined his career and eventually gave him such stomach failure he died. In the 1970's, we had album rock stations. The D J's would play whole sides of albums, so we did hear this on the radio. ❤
Great song! It was recorded in Indianapolis on Halloween (you would have heard him say “Y’all have a happy Halloween!” If you had played the whole track) - my wife was at that show as an innocent 16 year old!
It's so good to see you guys again. Yeah, this was on the radio a bunch as people have said. And it was quite daring for the time. But this life performance has become iconic; it's just so compelling. Another live one that is fantastic and yet the studio recording actually is absolutely incredible, but it has a lot of the live Dynamics and a lot of answer back and call and Echo between the backing vocals in the league, especially near the end, also a fan-favorite, also a hit, Keep On Rolling.
I haven't heard this in years, Gary got Asia making stank face 😁 This song is needed now more than ever. REO Speedwagon was phenomenal in concert, as were most bands back then, they were real artists. But, they did play it on the radio.
Saw them live many times growing up in central Illinois. They always put on a great show. Good old Midwestern 70's rock. Check out the live version of 157 Riverside Avenue. Just nuts.
I loved this video. Watching your reactions to this great song brought tears to my eyes. Gary Richrath is my biggest guitar hero. He grew up in my neck of the woods, and I went to school with Gary's son, Eric. Gary wrote this song in large part in protest to the war in Vietnam. Gary wrote a lot of REO's biggest songs. Such an underrated guitar player and song writer. Thank you for choosing this song. Your reactions made my day.
This is a really good live version of "Golden Country" but my favorite older progressive REO song is called "Like you do" that is one of their best and most popular songs from them back then. By the way REO only had one guitar player back then and it was Gary Richrath he was one of the most underrated guitar players of all time.
Top tier for certain. This whole "You Get What You Play For" album is excellent, not a bad tune, or guitar solo, on it! It is amazing to know the same stuff of forty-six plus years ago is still going on today. Nothing changed.
We would go crazy when they sang this song! Back then we could go right up to the stage and interact with the band. One of my favs from REO!! ☮️ ❤️ 🎶 🎸 🎶
I gotta say it warms my heart to see that the younger generation is keeping this music alive so happy to be passing the torch on to you guys thanks so much you guys are amazing and ROCK ON!!!!!!
won tickets to this tour...won the tickets on KZOK seattle....GREAT show...back before they started writing songs for 14 year old girls...riding the storm out got a lot of play too
I Love watching You guys with these reaction videos Especially the music I grew up with I Love Music Especially Classic Rock I am within a couple of concerts of having been to 700 concerts And Yes I could tell you Guys are Music Fans as well Especially from Dallas I actually grew up just 2 hours East of here and came nearly every weekend if not here I would go to Shreveport to concerts I am pretty sure REO Speedwagon is coming to Dos but has not made it yet. I Love So many Bands you guys have done videos on that is So much fun I remember Triumph and Journey are all Top of my list and. I am having Fun watching and Loved that you played RTZ Brad Delphine of The Greatest Rock Vocalist
There are not a lot of songs where I can remember the first time I ever heard it, but I do remember the first time I heard Golden Country. We were skipping school and we were at a friend's house. This album had just come out, and I was higher than a kite. I actually think it was on an old high fi stereo, but back then it sounded great and it was cranked up. I became an instant fan.
@@rutex09 that is true, but the audio is taken from the live album, and they did a decent job of syncing it up to the video. some of it is not a good match - especially the keyboard footage. still like it a lot more than a picture of the album cover.
@@realitybytez Yes they did a great job, if you do a TH-cam search of “REO Sreedwagon 1979” with the typo and go to 28:30 is the untampered video with 1979 audio
Believe it or not, this song was on the radio! Radio used to be so much better than today's version. Even back in the 80's and 90's this was played on a regular basis on radio that featured rock music. It's hard to play REO and NOT play this song. This one and Riding the Storm Out are among their best, Keep the Fire Burning being another. I still hear this song played on occasion on classic rock radio stations. If you liked this song you will like the others I mentioned as well.
The best REO Speedwagon song for sure.Written by Gary Richrath, the lead guitar player, and the man who wrote their best rock songs.Kevin Cronin the lead singer, wrote their soft pop ballads. There is a video of this song from this album,it is worth watching to see Gary killing it and engaging the crowd.Gary was the driving force behind the band until they started playing more softer pop stuff.Sadly Gary has left us,but his songs will always be remembered.Try Riding The Storm Out live, another one by Gary. Thanks for this one.

I just heard this song on the radio a week ago. It wasnt this live version though. BTW, You Tube has this exact live version of this song. You can see Gary shredding during his solo...awesome.

I like the studio version better and yes, this music made people love each other more
Gary loved playing his guitar and sharing his music and the musical talent of all members was awesome.
Roll With The Changes, Ridin' the Storm Out are two more to check out.
Their best song by far!

It's amazing how this song has transcended time. The message of this song is very much pertananent still today.
They rocked in the 70's ! Then they went to the power ballads in the 80's.

Gary Richrath... I put him in my top 10 guitarists ever... EVER! (maybe top 5)
Agreed! 👍 For me Jimmy Page,RIik Emmett,Ace, Richrath may be in my top 5 now n I've been hearing this song since 1977.
💜 Glad you were able to hear and react to this song!! 😊💜🎶

More than just a pop band ay? Indeed. You know when a band can jam like this live they got skills and talent!
Think about this before 1996 they had no auto tune, bands back they played on pure talent!
It's not selected puppets that create change for the good of the people. It's the people who stand up to them!

The late GREAT Gary Richrath on the lead guitar!
I’m from East Peoria Illinois hometown of Gary richrath this song was always on the local rock station rock 106
Alan Gratzer just wore those drums out. New kit needed after this one smoked! He wore gloves when he played and you can hear why!

They were my first concert 1978 Chicago Amphitheater. Gary's guitar needed a cigarette after that solo.
