My son played for the young Bulls and they LOVED Bakkies. He is the true gentle giant off the fiels. He really spend a lot of time with the kids and made such an impression. He often said to my son "Dont follow in anybody's footsteps, walk like a man and make your own". I thought that was amazing
He was an ex bouncer and obviously liked the violence My son is 6’7” and built like etzebeth and is the quietest person off the pitch and actually avoids conflict and would let anyone have a go and just push them away but on the pitch I regularly hear ribs break etc when he steams into the opposition but as soon as he comes off at the end will have a beer with the guys he was just beasting It’s the nature of the game sometimes
Yip. I played lock all through school the army and club rugby in SA and I was a soft guy. I had to harden the hell up! And quickly! As being a forward at any level in South Africa you have to be tough and prepared to get nasty quickly.
An interesting fact about "Beast" Mtawarira, the one that looks like Idris Elba. He's going to be playing in the USA to play rugby for Washinton after winning the world cup last year. A genuine superstar coming over to promote the game and taking a massive pay cut to join a smaller club. Worth looking into.
@@lukessportsacademy The MLR isn't USA Rugby. It's a professional league started 3 years ago. Some Eagles play in it though. When the USA Eagles play during the MLR season they have to bargain with the MLR to have the players released. In the rest of the world there are limits on how many players (usually 5) on the field that are not eligible for that nations National team. That limit is intended to ensure that eligible players get experience playing at that high level thus improving the National team. Last year the MLR threw that limit out. They lost a lot of my respect when in the first few games I noticed these "american" teams were only fielding 2 Americans thus depriving American players of needed game time.
Let's just say that you'd prefer for him to play alongside you rather than against you. He dished slaps on a regular basis. He lived to slap oppenents.

How about the time he tackled a guy and head butted him full force to the back of the head? He not only got sent off the field he got sent back home from the tour over seas after such a filthy move...
You would pronounce his name: "Buckies Bota" you dont say the Th in the traditional way, you say the Th as just a T. Bismarks story about Bakkies says in Afrikaans: "Hey captain, I enjoy living on the Edge!"
Check out the video called Thugs of rugby Or something like that. Much more action. Bakkies Botha plays a big roll in that video. Very physical player. Also check out Eben Etzebeth. Also very physical player. Lot's of drama. Ps. They had to bring in more weights to the local rugby club gym for this guy.
Here is another video on the history of rugby which will give you better insight into the history of the teams. th-cam.com/video/JfiJ6jybzYU/w-d-xo.html
th-cam.com/video/KyI1UQfT6K0/w-d-xo.html That should give you an idea of the kind of player he was. Botha was the most physically imposing lock to play rugby. The upside, like you see, is that someone who does the dirty work better than anyone else wins you trophies. The downside is that he is disregarded as a thug (which he was) and therefore an unskilled player. He had incredible skill, but in the dark arts of rugby. So while many people would pick other flashier locks, I would always pick Botha at 4, especially if you expect to play a forward dominant style of rugby.
Wonderful ambassador for Rugby, but I really wouldn't like facing him in a match... As for pronunciation - it may well be that English wasn't his first language, but Afrikaans.
Dude, find another video where they don't blow smoke up his arse. Where he is actually being "The Enforcer". The dude is tough as nails, and scary as hell!
Good pronunciation, he’s 6f6 and used to be club doorman in South Africa before he became a professional rugby player so he had no problem being violent and here’s the reason he retired m.th-cam.com/video/CujR7hKR4XE/w-d-xo.html&pp=ygUYQmFra2llcyBib3RoYSByZXRpcmVtZW50
Good video. His highlights are not particualry impressive to watch as he did mainly the physical stuff at the ruck rather than the big highlight plays. This video was a bit South African centric imo. A great Lock for sure, but was he one of the best players ever? No, not particularly close imo. You should check out Dan Carter. Most people have him as the best Fly-half ever (Fly half = Rugby's versions of a Quarterback essentially)
I’m South African and I have to agree with this comment. Not a world all-time great but certainly a South African all-time great. He was immense for South Africa for sure, and for every team he played in. But you’re right, I think a Dan Carter video, or John Eales. A video of a player who was the best ever in their position
He won a Vodacom Cup, Multiple Currie Cups, Super Rugby 3 times, a French top 14 title, Euro Champs title, a Lions tour and a World Cup. He was one of the most feared and hardest Rugby players in history. He might not have hae the skills of a guy like Retalick or Itoje but he is definitely one of the best locks in history because he played the enforcer role better than anyone and had a solid line out game as well
@@ruangreyling2073 Oh yeah he is a top lock for sure. But the video made it out to be that he was one of the best players, no matter the position, ever. And that's pushing it a bit too far.
@@calumcaldwell9439 Not once did the video make out that he's the best player ever. Nobody can even say someone is the best player ever since each position requires different skillset. Thank you Luke. Indeed the Americans are so foolish in pronouncing these European origin names from Netherlands, Germany and others. It is pathetic. B Botha is the Enforcer before Eben Ebtzbeth from SA! I live in the UK!
Why insult ignorent american if you cant even prenouns the name right .... I actually enjoy his videos more then yours dont jugde other people and i really hope you do reply on my message.....

Bakkies is that guy you need on your side in a fight; never against.
Bakkies and Eben tag team
Bakkies botha and Viktor matfielf was probably the best combo on a team ever. They played so well together
Archetypal South African forward, hard with an edge of nastiness that puts the fear of God into any weak opponent.

Check out Eben Etsebeth. He kinda took the place of Bakkies Botha as the Enforcer
Bakkies!!! What a legend, an enforcer on the field, but one of the nicest people off the field.
Im from South Africa have seen Bakkies Botha play in the flesh its something else believe me and he is huge
Good locks don't have highlight reels. They are too busy doing the dirty work to get flashy.
@Ok Boomer You mean he left out the high tackles and headbutts.

If you’re looking for an absolute South African rugby legend and absolute dog look up Schalk Burger. He played in that same era as bakkies

"Botha" is like "Bwer-ta"
Probably the most accurate comment for non South Africans.
Cud u watch Jacque burger, he’s a Namibia rugby player he was one of the toughest men in rugby
And Bryan Habana
Good video man
one of my all time favourite players
Playing lock is the best position ever. It's like war.

Only Saffers think Bakkies was an Enforcer same as they do with Etzebeth. The rest of the world just laughs at how cute that is.
I guess that explains why Saffers have 3 world cups.
We pronounce it more like "Buck-keys Bo-ta", the 'th' in Botha has a silent h in Afrikaans.
Pronunciation of his name:
Bakkies Botha
(Bucky's) (boat - tah)
That's not even how his surname is pronounced my guy. That 'boat' part isn't correct.
The U.S. marines say HOOAH! Now replace the H with a B..Booah-tah.
