As a rugby player at school and university we (Afrikaans speakers) would play extra hard against English schools and "English" varsities. Was extra special to beat them. But those sentiments have mellowed quite a lot. Just dont mention the Boer War with a english gloat in the streets of Pretoria... bound to get you into a tight spot.

When I go to a bar in South Africa or even when I lived in the UK, I used to go up up to the biggest guys in the bar and say... if shit hits the fan tonight, you're on my side. They know they are tall or big and it is a massive complement. It was the best opening line that leads to a conversation with these monsters. It also avoids any confrontation when everyone is a bit pissed, especially me who is an absolute wind-up merchant.

Although it isn't as much a thing as it was even just 15 years ago, if you murder a quarter of a country's woman and children in concentration camps they tend to hold a grudge.
I saw these English blokes wearing Boer war military gear (kakie kleure) to the Loftus Lions game in 2009. I thought that isn't smart guys. Sure enough, within minutes they got some appreciation for history battered into them. Very chilled person myself, but I didn't even feel bad for them, it was callous.

The weight statement says a lot of the gap of EJ vs coaches of clubs & why the disparity in performances & use of players. Ewers at Exeter under used as with others he claims never fitting his mould. Slade is overhyped whilst Nowell under used?

The boer war is really only applicable to our boer/afrikaner players. Black players can't really relate apart from the fact black prisoners were also held in the boer war concentration camps of the british. Maybe the zulu war but again thats only applicable to zulu and the coloured player might to a degree relate to the boer war motivation. But one thing is for sure. Bakkies would definitely be motivated by the boer war. I have nothing against the english/british (lions) but being an afrikaner/boer I do when it comes to rugby have that same anger. We are a very nationalist peoples. We are very much a army in a way. And few things bring afrikaner together like rugby against the english.

@@wot4922 It wasnt only Afrikaners/Boers that was put into the camps and murdered by the British.Lots of black people was also killed...put in the camps or starved...There is a famous picture from the Boer War where an black South African was sentenced to death by a British court for stealing a goat because he was starving..In the Mafikeng siege the Brits kept all the food for themselves and let the African population starve...My point is that it wasnt only the Afrikaners that suffered under the British but a big part of the natives as well.

Also, not all Saffers are Afrikaners (i.e. of Dutch descent, which are the Boers). None of the black or coloured players are Boers. Only about half the white players are Boers (the rest of the white players are of British descent).

English and British is used interchangeably in Ireland when talking about the British state or establishment not the general population because it's England who calls the shots while Scotland and Wales are basically colonies who were planted with Anglo-Saxon settlers centuries ago who would be loyal to the Crown . It's a classic English colonial tactic to divide and conquer, they tried to do the same in Ireland but largely failed except in the 6 Northern counties where they created a sectarian mess . Irishmen actually fought alongside the Boers against the British and in the American war of Independence because of a deep hatred for the English Crown. Don't let the posh accents and private school education fool you the British establishment especially Conservatives can't be trusted and have no morals.
