You can't lead with the head, and helmet to helmet contact is now unacceptable. However, everything else you saw was pretty standard in American Football. Just imagine a 6'4" 245 lb LB who runs a 4.4 40, and benches 450 lbs, coming at you full speed...crazy!

"The g-forces must be similar to a car crash" you actually arent far off on that observation, the only sport that generates similar forces on hits is hockey.
@@lukebohannon2582 Yeah but those are a different kind of sports so it is a hard comparison there. But yeah they do have similar forces but it is more about pressure and location.
It's why American football needs to be banned or significantly modified. EVERY SINGLE NFL player has CTE. Think about how many high school kids ... Middle school kids ... are getting CTE that affects them the rest of their lives. If all the cost of medical care, mental health care, incarcerations, etc. resulting from football injuries were factored into the cost of tickets to NFL games, it would cost more than anyone would be willing to pay. Right now, everyone else is paying for it. People who enjoy watching men literally sacrifice their lives for a game are sick in the head.
@@wyleyhansen845 True that. I've seen clips where you could tell the guy had a broken leg, because LEGS DON'T BEND THAT WAY! These were all hits that people were going to feel, and know they got their bells rung, but not the kinds where you get the stretcher to haul them off the field.
We had ambulances at all our our games (4th grade up to high school) It wasn't like that till some kid who was in the 7th grade at the time broke his back.
“I think the pads and helmets make it more violent” Yeah, that’s a school of thought. Makes them feel more invincible, and they lay down harder licks. Some people will argue that if we take away helmets, players will be forced to calm down on the brutality. Maybe. But a lot of these guys are race cars in the red at all times, so who knows. For now, they’re cracking down on hits to the head significantly. Many of these shots here aren’t legal. That’s not to say don’t don’t happen anymore. They do. But the crazy stuff we saw even just a few years back with guys like Brian Dawkins and Ed Reed wouldn’t fly today. Look, both Rugby and A.F. are manly sports. Rugby can get away with being sans pads and helmets because it’s a little more horizontal of a game. The forward pass in the NFL adds a verticality which leads to nasty collisions. And yeah, it is like being in a small car accident over and over and over again. Meanwhile, the toothless NHL players are sitting back and saying “yeah? Add speed, include punches, and throw weapons in their hands.” Hockey is a different type of savage.
Exactly none of that is accurate. The extreme hits are not a product of the pads and helmets making them feel invincible. The extreme hits *are the reason they started wearing pads and helmets in the first place* -- seriously, the violence predates the padding and helmets. It was in fact President Teddy Roosevelt himself that told them if they didn't do something about all the men *dying* in every game he would have Congress ban the sport. (Edit: *18* men had been killed playing football that year) The pads and helmets were NOT introduced so they could hit harder as clearly they were already doing that... it was so that men would stop getting KILLED by that extreme violence.

So many rugby guys on TH-cam figuring out how hard some hits are in the NFL. In general, leading with the helmet, hitting a defenseless player, and grabbing the helmet are discouraged

To clarify: -Yes, leading with your shoulder is allowed(even if you don’t wrap up) -No, you can’t lead with your helmet or hit the ball carrier’s helmet with yours -No, you can’t grab their facemask to tackle them
@@toiletpaper4 I'm all for the changes. CTE ruins lives, especially for those that haven't secured their NFLPA benefits yet. It's a shame they really haven't been able to find a way to extend RB shelf life. A lot of those guys are used up and cut before they can even get their big contract and left with broken bodies at the bottom rung of the real world.
@@pogfee 'most'? A lot of these are just solid shoulder tackles, at least in the first few minutes I saw; except for the illegal case of clipping, which by the looks of the era... Should still have been illegal.
1) you can’t grab the helmet 2) no head to head 3) if they’re not looking or if you go for them not the ball it’s illegal Most other stuff is legal that’s why we wear pads
Not even. You just need to be on the front side of the shoulder pads at any angle. You can blindside block someone from the front (or side as long as you are "blocking" at an angle from the front of the shoulder pads)
You guys are all correct I should have been more clear. I was mostly thinking about hits to a defenseless receiver when writing this comment, which is illegal.
tjato r you can hit them if they don’t have the ball and you can hit them if they aren’t looking at you you just can’t hit someone from the back and you can’t hit someone not close to the guy with the ball like no targeting
“Are these hits not illegal?...” Americans: “Oh buddy, this is nothing close to illegal in the U.S. These guys are just having fun getting payed millions...:
Mmm no a lot of these are illegal lol, to many hits leading with the crown of you’re helmet and you can’t hit a receiver trying to get a pass before he gets it and if he has his back turned.
Most of the hits are legal but there is a no helmet to helmet contact rule so all of the clips where the persons helmet came off the person who hit them would get a 10000 dollar fine and put out of the game
@@sxionfanboi5082 have you ever went to a football game? I’ve even took hits like this in middle school. There’s a kid right now that’s 6 ft and only 10 years old playing football for an elementary school
You’re right, the helmet and pads allow for much more forceful impacts, because players feel like they are “armored”. This is why there’s so much CTE in many former NFL players, including defensive players who were usually dishing out the hits. The NFL and colleges have in recent years outlawed spiking with your helmet or taking shots at someone’s head, so many of those hits in older videos would be illegal now.
Answer to: Can you hold there helmets and pull them down? No, very much not. It is an illegal face mask and most likey you will get a penalty for "x" amount of yards back.
Rugby isn’t soccer when you get hit in rugby you can’t drop the ball and have to place the ball which probably wouldn’t be possible getting hit like that
"Can you grab them by the helmet and pull them down?" ...Yes, whenever a referee is distracted. You can also punch them after the play if enough players are standing around.
OMG Are you talking about the one on MNF against the Broncos where Largent fumbled after a hit, then after the guy picked it up and avoided tackles for like 10-15 seconds, Largent laid his ass out, made him fumble and picked it up?
Yeah most were legal, some dirty, but there's A LOT of these hits that were legal at that time but would draw a penalty today. They are a lot more concerned with players lives after the sport than they were then. Those hits to defenseless players, blocking someone when they're not looking at full speed like on a peel back block, and stuff like that would draw flags now because that's where the really nasty head injuries happen. And I'm my opinion those hits were always dirty, even if they were legal. I've never seen a block to a defenseless player like that, that ever needed to be as hard as they are here. You could be equally effective as a block at 1/3rd the intensity.
The thing about American football vs rugby is that in American football you're always running at 100% during the short time of the play while in rugby it's more like soccer where there can be bursts of speed but on average it's more of an endurance game. That plus the fact that suiting up in pads and a helmet takes the fear out of players, subconsciously making them hit harder with less hesitation.
Nearly all the hits in the video were legal when they happened, about half are illegal hits under modern rules. The collision force between offensive and defensive Linemen is slighlty more than a thirty mile per hour car crash. The reason Football players wear pads is because of the serious debilitating injuries that occured in the 1900s, 1910s-1930s when helmets were mandated That said only one football player has died on field, and that was due to a rare heart condition(Aortic Severing). Baseball has the highest incident of death in the four Major American leagues.
lazyidiotofthemonth wow I didnt know any of that! Thanks for explaining. Football (soccer) has seen it's fair share of people die on the field and its heartbreaking to watch

@@kiwikicker9263 There are far more physicals and health DQ's at the college level which limit the field of who gets drafted in the NFL, plus the NFL has even higher standards of health before play. lazyidoitofthemonth is absolutely correct in that under current rules and regulations, most of these would be illegal. The most notably to know is the "hit on a defenseless receiver" where there are limitations on where you can hit a receiver that cannot defend himself. I am one of the rare few in America that played football, plays rugby and Officiates, so if you have rules questions, do not hesitate to ask! Also, the NFL rule book is available and free: operations.nfl.com/the-rules/ cheers!
Ok so I will be going through your questions as I hear them. Question one: is this legal? Answer is yes to an extent. No helmet to helmet hits are allowed, a solid block which was the 2nd clip you saw is legal to an extent, the guy getting blocked must be capable of seeing the blocker so no hits from behind. Also in the clip where the guy dove for the ball and was hit is illegal, that is called a defenseless player, and they can't be hit. Also if you are attempting to catch the ball you can't be laid out before touching it. Not a question but yes, almost every professional sport in America has an ambulance at the venue, this also includes college and many games in highschool. Can you do that: this is in reference if the famous hit from the 49ers on some poor jets player where they knocked him out and folded him. No you can't, but not because of the 2 guys hitting him, it's because he lead with the head and hit the runners head. If 2 players go for a tackle it's all good but you can't have helmet to helmet contact. Can you grab them by the helmet and pull them down? No. The rules were made for leather helmets and it wasn't possible so the old clip you saw was soon after they got new helmets and those hits were why they changed the rules. That's what I wanna know is this stuff legal: for one most of those clips are older and the rules are becoming more offensive sided lately where they make it harder to do your job on defence. But yes most of those were clean hits, if they were penalties then it's normally 15 yards and that's it. If it's really really bad you might get ejected and fined but that would rarely happen for a hit unless your really broke the rules. Also I would like to add the perspective of someone who isn't used to the sport is amazing. In America we see hits like that and we go "HELL YEAH GOOD PLAY BROTHER" But you are like stunned haha.
@@shield3794 took me maybe 10 minutes longer than watching the vid. I like writing and I'm quick at it, wrote a 12 page essay in an hour an a half once my senior year.
shots to the head are illegal, picking someone up and throwing them down is illegal, you have to lead with your shoulder to the not head and neck area, and lastly, blindside hits are illegal (when the person doesn't see it coming). and you can't go for the legs of quarterback either, unless its accidnet
@@gooddaywithh4341 we call that cutting which is blocking and tackling by putting your head and shoulder into the knees and below. It is illegal everywhere except for Texas High school ball level and below
Though, generally speaking, that just doesn't happen that often. A lot probably have it to some extent; but enough to be the life issue they make it? Due to some colossal PR campaigns from activists and lawyers, there seems to be a belief that almost all NFL players end up being completely disabled by old age... Which flies in the fact... Most of our legendary players and coaches still being productive and interesting members of society quite a bit later. Elway is still owner of the Broncos, making smart arguments on TV and running a business, exercises. And no, he isn't a fluke, find a player you like who left awhile ago, and you will find MORE OFTEN THAN NOT [as in, not without exception, but the largest group by far] - are not in fact, disabled people today. Even though they still took so much extra punishment in the NFL. And for that kind of money, with the risk being RELATIVELY low? I would do it. Not a question.
@@Taigiry Ok, how bout a running back? The most contact heavy position there is, cuz everytime you are up, you are gonna be smacking someone, trying to shove them out of the way, or get smacked down yourself? My favorites were always Jim Brown, on account of his legendary multi sport success, Adrian Peterson, and Bo. Jim Brown, already well past 50 - is still more than coherent to be RUNNING around in Heisman house commercials, if you have watched them, and be giving full length interviews where I can hear NO incoherence; not disabled. Adrian Peterson is 34, so her probably shouldn't count yet, but because he's my favorite, I'll just note he is still capable of physically playing a full contact sport with the Redskins, and the mental faculties to fully understand complex play charts and interviews without fumbling around. Ok, what about Bo Jackson? Still alive, fully mobile, and even doing interviews without fumbling, and we can see him doing much harder things than tying his shoes when we see him in the media these days; the only dumb thing about him is - he is a hypocrite; he said in an interview what was it, last year? That because what we know about medical science now, he probably wouldn't ever let his kids risk playing; why, scared they might end up just like you? If they want to risk their health, why not? Would you let them be a police officer or a soldier? It's a coin flip in either case, but one pays way more. And you might not have known about CTE risks, but you knew at any moment you could run a play and be paralyzed for life, extremely rare, but possible, and you yourself CHOSE to take that risk. That's what I'd say to him. Ok, so yeah, I just listed and went through my favorite running backs, my point is still 3/3. To add insult to injury, all three of them have had multiple concussions and shit from their contact at several times in their career, even Bo's shorter one decades ago [which if what all the fear mongers say, should hit him now anyway]. Care to try again? I am not saying there aren't some people who don't get all of these injuries in full; or even that a lot of them might have it to a smaller degree; but if we are going with "are most being disabled late in life"; the answer is - no. And not only is that no; but they get paid extremely well for that. I really, do not see the problem; and now the NFL has done things like adding the targeting rule, and concussion protocol; so now there really isn't an excuse to be crying against people wanting to play it.
Except for that big squishy brain your bucket holds. Pads don't stop concussions or the cumulative effects of them. Or broken limbs, busted knees, torn ligaments, neck and back injuries, or the effects of steroid abuse as Lyle Alzado found out.
I have the utmost respect for Rugby.. Playing unpadded against some of those giants would suck. But as you can see, the padding in Football allows for far more vicious and frankly dangerous plays. A lot of players get concussions and develop brain issues later on in their careers. But it also makes for excellent entertainment. And keep in mind these guys are jacked beyond belief. Actual world class athletes, not just brutes trying to kill each other.
@Vaea Tangitau Football is also about tackling. These are just big hits. The rules allowed these types of big hits. In the past 10 years the rules have changed every year to become far more less big hit plays. It's becoming less of a defense oriented league into a super high scoring offense league. It creates more highlights that occur more often and is safer for players. Still, this video shows what kind of game it was back when it was more balanced. It was great fun to watch but don't think just because you saw one youtube video every single play was like this, even during the era of defense.
Since the late 90s things started getting soft in the sport due to long-term injuries specifying head concussions. But your first reaction was honestly the best one
Kiwi: Their careers must be finished... Truth: Though a couple of those hits did end careers, most weren't off the field more than a play or two, if any.
@Vishya Knewdat I played high school and then later in life started a medical business in stem cells. We treat many pro players from the 90's and now 2019 who suffer from traumatic brain injuries. Many are suicidal and some have killed themselves and you know their names. SO saying that "none of these guys were crippled" is not true. its long term.
You can't hit anyone in the head or neck area. You can't hit an offensive player BEFORE the ball arrives. You can't hit someone defenseless from behind that doesn't have the ball.
This comment pretty well nails the gist of it. Most of those hits were legal, but when I say most, I mean about 70%. There were some dirty hits that are frowned upon, and some straight up illegal hits. Additionally, you can’t grab the helmet or the collar of the shoulder pads from behind.
You have to look at the history as well. The older videos show his that were perfectly legal then that no are not. That's why a lot of the old timers are saying the sport is getting soft. Every hit was legal at one point in history.
I keep seeing here people saying you can't do somethings. Well that's not how you should say it. More like your not supposed to hit certain was,but they still do and usually only get a 10 to 15 yard penalty. If it's really bad you can get kicked out of the game and fined. No court just you pay 10 thousand maybe up to 50 thousand dollars. Yes every weekend you will see at least a few of these.

I’ve played played both rugby (Forward, usually 2nd row for 15 years - College and Mens club) and football (Offensive/ defensive line for 4 years - high school and NCAA) My take is that football is definitely more violent. As a lineman I was not subject to as many big hits like in those videos but I was hit in the head way more than when I played rugby. After a rugby game I was sore all over and had a lot more bumps and bruises but there was more potential for a serious head injury in football because of the helmets. Both are great sports but I had a lot more fun playing rugby.
It's amazing what we can get used to. I traveled to Spain and saw an actual bullfight. It's... pretty brutal. You watch the bull antagonized, stabbed by multiple people, then when it's too weak to fight back put out of it's misery, the quickly dragged out of the arena. And yet the Spaniards think our American Football is barbaric and over the top violent. It's based on what you're raised around.
I started watching Rugby last year.. And some of those hits with no pads make me cringe.... Love both sports.. But i still dont understand Rugby fully yet.

“I think the pads and helmets make it more violent”
Yeah, that’s a school of thought.
I was just about to say, watch Hockey hits next.

It’s funny watching this as a HUGE NFL fan
Helmet to helmet hits are a newish rule it was about 5 to 10 years ago they added it

shots to the head are illegal, picking someone up and throwing them down is illegal, you have to lead with your shoulder to the not head and neck area, and lastly, blindside hits are illegal (when the person doesn't see it coming). and you can't go for the legs of quarterback either, unless its accidnet
Blindsides are only illegal if they don’t have the ball. If someone has the the ball they are fair game for the most part
And for the most part the horse collaring clips in this video were old and before it was illeagal
I don't think tripping is allowed but you can grab someone by their legs
Don’t forget no grabbing by horse collar or face mask to bring someone down.
@@gooddaywithh4341 we call that cutting which is blocking and tackling by putting your head and shoulder into the knees and below. It is illegal everywhere except for Texas High school ball level and below
Most of the time, it hurts just as bad to deliver a helmet hit. Anyway, it's all good fun... Until you hit 50 and can't tie your own shoes.
@@adrianbundy3249 You trolling? Pick a position that's prone to contact for an example. Don't discount the hidden damage either

Ethan Roberts wow thanks for the correction I mean seriously its not like it was a joke or anything meant for effect instead of accuracy
Thank you my guy
@@ethanroberts3275 really? I didn't know
Or wearing something with battle on it
I have the utmost respect for Rugby..
Dude same I would honestly be scared to play without pads I have so much respect for rugby players
@@MrComputerCoder No they haven't. These were not a bunch of helmet to helmet hits. If you don't know, just shut up.
Since the late 90s things started getting soft in the sport due to long-term injuries specifying head concussions. But your first reaction was honestly the best one
3:48 of course he doesn’t look at the one when he gets picked up...that’s my favorite
Mr Mystical that’s like a normal NRL tackle
Kiwi: grimaces and looks away
Me: it’s not a proper big hit unless he fumbles or drops the pass
Yes sir
Or his helmet comes off
Something must be lost
Kiwi: Their careers must be finished...
Truth: Though a couple of those hits did end careers, most weren't off the field more than a play or two, if any.
@Vishya Knewdat I played high school and then later in life started a medical business in stem cells. We treat many pro players from the 90's and now 2019 who suffer from traumatic brain injuries. Many are suicidal and some have killed themselves and you know their names. SO saying that "none of these guys were crippled" is not true. its long term.
@Vishya Knewdat imagine making this obviously wrong comment.
Vishya Knewdat um the hit around the 3 min mark resulted in a broken back so your statement is not true thanks for playing
@@MadManMatrix clearly missed the word "most" which does not mean the same as "all"
"MOST weren't off the field more than a play or two."
@@OkieVet918 clearly missed the first sentence "Zero of those hits resulted in injury."
There's only one rule in football stay conscious.
“Clearly their careers are finished.”
Nah they’ll be fine. Just give em some ice
Isabella Wilkie Yeah for whatever reason a lot of career ending hits don’t actually look that bad on camera
Hit em with the tren, cortisol, platelet fluids, and maybe some stem cells, they'll be fine.
Rub some dirt in it and get back out there
more like a shot of oxycodone, some novacaine, and a pat on the ass...now get back out there and be somebody!!
Walk it off...
You also can't hit your wife in the face in an elevator or you lose your contract.
🤣😂😂🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣😂😂😂😂
I’m an Aussie who has lived in America for almost 3 years now. BEFORE I moved here I USE to think American football was for girls, I’ve since watched 2 full seasons of American football and I concluding by saying.... it ain’t for girls.
What made you think it was for girls???
I played football for 10 years and ive ment girls on that field that hit harder then men 3x their size
How do you explain the Lingerie Football League? 😀😀😀😀😀😀
@@Outdoorman4624 ha call bull shit when you have no clue on my history or any of my play
Thanks. I guess.
When Ray Lewis shows up he just goes “what the...”
And most of us consider modern day football “soft” compared to back in the day
Bulldog modern day football is soft
LittleAsianBoy clearly you don’t watch football or at least don’t know what you want as a fan because it’s not getting soft it’s getting clean the hits are just as hard they are just clean so we get the privilege to watch Peyton Manning and drew breese play for more then a year just cause we are done with head hunting doesn’t mean it’s soft quit your complaining and go back to your couch and play madden or something honestly football is better with out people like you shiting on athletes
nith the valiant thank you someone has knowledge football isnt soft never has been never will be just a lot more clean like you said and they get clean so we don’t absolutely destroy people
nith the valiant I watch football a lot that’s the only sport I play and compared to back then it is soft I know people who have even said that
@@niththevaliant Bullshit!!! Yes there's still big hits but the game has gotten softer. Quarterbacks don't have to worry about getting creamed, it's one of the reason QB records have gone far beyond the days of old. Can't twist the QBs legs, can't smash him across the face, just hold him for 2secs and the refs blow the whistle...hell tackle him to the ground and you're assured a penalty. Can't helmet to helmet spear tackle anymore...hit close to the helmet and get a penalty.
Hell yeah, the game is softer. What you're calling "cleaner" is a judgement based on the new safer/politically correct football rules...and not the reality of old football rules. Also, the new QB and receiver records ought to be marked with *...after pussy rules implemented. It's not the same anymore...2-3decades more and it will become flag football.
Hitting in the NFL | The Old NFL vs. the New NFL - th-cam.com/video/FBrTFPzzcrE/w-d-xo.html
Starting @7:00 shows you the new football rules. And this video is dated...it doesn't include the newest NFL rules.
PS - I'm a 60+ yr old who played just about every lineman position offense and defense...I was never in the NFL, but I played and watched...without a doubt it's softer today.
Again, I'm calling...Bullshit!!
I remember that tackle that Reggie Bush got when he first got drafted and all everyone kept saying, INCLUDING THE ANNOUNCERS, was "welcome to the NFL" lol
Marky Mark Reggie was never the same after
He was never the same..
I blame the cardachian for Reggie not being the same.
Sorry can’t spell the fancy word for trash.
1ATX 1 kardashians
We already know ray Lewis , Brian Dawkins and Sean Taylor were the hardest hitters
They instituted pads to *"reduce on-field fatalities"*
😂 yeah getting hit in the head at 28mph is pretty deadly
Yeah early college football with 11 man wedges killed like a dozen players a year
I remember watching the replay for the Nebraska Wisconsin game, and that hit was absolutely electrifying
Kiwi: Is that illegal.
Americans: No that is what we call fun.
Loldope 48 Underrated comment
Made it 69, nice
Canadians ironically have the same reaction as americns when they watch hockey hits.
Loldope 48 just as tough in the great white north
perfect comment
I think it's funny to watch someone who doesn't know a lot about the sport sees this and just is in shock lol
“IS IT LEGAL?” Not just legal but its part of the fun😂

NOW THATS A LOTTA DAMAGE
Hehe that's messed up I liked it
I sawed this receiver in half
I SAWED THIS BOAT IN HALF
So I watch your other channel and I saw your 2nd podcast with you and your wife explaining your journey so I came here to see this. NFL players now are no longer allowed to LEAD with their helmet as it is called TARGETING! Also, the Quarterback is much more protected in today's game as was in years gone by! Love your family and your reactions. Hope you enjoy your trip in America! Hello from Southern Indiana near Louisville, Kentucky!
Ditto! 😃 Same reason I'm here, and same sentiments!
I’ve played played both rugby (Forward, usually 2nd row for 15 years - College and Mens club) and football (Offensive/ defensive line for 4 years - high school and NCAA)
My take is that football is definitely more violent.
Good comment
Nice Guy Eddie they call it "padding" but make it brick hard in the outside -
the inside and outside should be padded!!!!!!!
hey man i hit people like this all the time as a line backer
Foot ball is cooler and way mor strategy is involved
Kudos to u man thx for being the bridge between groups
Also linemen rule
I love watching these reactions. What's so normal to us is so shocking to somebody else.
ShinigamiSparda bull fighting is unpopular though.
I started watching Rugby last year.. And some of those hits with no pads make me cringe.... Love both sports.. But i still dont understand Rugby fully yet.
Junk Yard Dogg it’s because in rugby you run more so you get more tired. I’m Football it’s about 10 seconds of fast play, then a break where they get their breath back. Rugby also uses technique
Love your review. You seem like a cool dude being non judgemental on our sport. Makes me want to look into rugby.
