So from a TH-cam perspective, there doesn't seem to be ANYONE focused on teaching gear repair in the field, either as a focus for the channel or even an occasional topic. Of course, there's no money from sponsors likely available for making this type of content for obvious reasons. Still, I would LOVE to see videos on topics like replacing buckles on backpack straps, repairing a rip in different types of materials, replacing shock cord in tent poles, using tooth floss to sew with ... the list goes on and on for possibilities. Anyone?
How do you know he knows how to do all those things? I mean he is always testing new gear so probably doesn't run into gear breaking that often that he would really be well versed in making repairs. I mean im sure he could figure something out as anyone could, but I don't think he has any special skill at it.
The truth is that Luke is tough enough and experienced enough to really get out there in severe conditions. He puts the gear through real world testing and comes back with very useful insights and evaluations. Thank you Luke for taking the pains to push gear hard enough to separate the diamonds from the lumps of coal.
Hey Luke, you have inspired me to get back out doors and camping. And it turns out my 5 year old daughter absolutley loves camping. We have a blast. Great bonding time and it gets her outside more. So i had to say thank you. Your the man!
I don’t rarely comment but Just want to say Thank You Luke and Susie for these videos I know it takes a lot to hike film and then editing the video so Thank You. With my feet disabilities unable to camp and hike any more so Thank You for taking me along with you. Much Appreciated!!!❤😊
I am stealth camping in my van on the shoreline of a harbor. Watching your videos help me pass the evening nicely as I enjoy them with a cup of hot coffee, tea or hot chocolate. I'm so glad you solved the dilemma with the tent pole. I love the character of your kettle. Mine looks much like yours after five years of use. Viewers have the choice of watching your videos. If the content doesn't seem interesting, move on.
Great video, as usual! Just a little tip for cleaning the kettle, I let mine soak in bleach (the bottom part) for 10 minutes or so and 95% of that carbon deposit just goes away. No scrubbing required, it's cheap and it's easy! Happy camping everyone!
You had your angel with you, they protect you all the time. I have been watching your videos for a long time, love them. I always loved to camp lots of fun and great friends to be with. I live in Ohio a beautiful state lots of places to camp, sad but I am now 81 so my days of camping are over also lost my husband 10 yrs ago. I love all the talks you have, lots of fun, your great. Take care 😊 ❤ Linda Wilde
LOVE your show mate but your LUT is killin me! LOL. The orange / blue thing certainly gives you a specific look but it gives your skin tone a way to UmpaLumpa orange hue (in my opinion). The only reason I mention this is in no way to tear anything down but to help make your good show a little better with a more cinematic look. Just a thought and I wish you well.
Thank you for your advise regarding your camping trips. You are efficient, wise and very knowledgeable. A good man (and woman) to follow. Your teaching skills are wonderful.
These videos help so much with my ADHD depression. I constantly keep wanting to get out, but dont due to whatever excuse I can come up with to myself. Thank you for keeping us outdoors.
I’m the same way. Big plans and no action. I have ALL the gear. Most of it still in the box. I lost my husband of 25 years in 2020 and bought a truck and travel trailer. 3 years later I’ve so,d them both and bought a midsize suv (to me it is smal) 2021 ford edge. My only regret is selling my travel trailer and 2021 ford 250. Now I have a 2021 ford edge (only front wheel drive, thought it was AWD before buying). So now I’m equipped. It still haven’t gone out camping. I felt safe in my travel trailer. Not sure about rent camping out of my car.
I'm glad you mentioned Tony I'm a big fan.tug tug is great. He is a hard working amazing man.we love AB camping. You both should do a blog together. That would be awesome. Like Kent survival, and a Bloke out doors.2 more of my favorite utubers.😊❤
Nice adventure and way to think on your feet on repairing the tent, Luke !! Unfortunately this seems to be the achilles heel of the Litefighter tent as reviewed by Gruntproof and others. The “Ghost Bone Fiber” poles. Apparently they are weaker than advertised and break at the ends as well as anywhere else you bend them a little too far, especially when they are cold. Luckily they offer aluminum poles as well, (albeit at an added cost). The aluminum poles fix the problem and should be standard on this tent until a stronger alternative pole system can replace the aluminum ones if they can find one. They should also upgrade the plastic grommets at the tent corners for metal ones. Otherwise it is a brilliant tent.
Trick I use with fuel canisters while out in the cold is to set up my stove and use a peice of duct tape and small hot hands and tape that to bottom underside of cannister. usually last about 8 to 10 hours depending and no issues or waiting. Great fix to the tent and good luck finding a replacement.....LOL!
Appreciate the time and dedication you put into all of your videos! Multiple shot angles, multiple cameras, using angles to hide cameras, etc. You do a lot (not to mention editing) to create some of the best videos on the platform! A happy and safe New Year to you and yours sir! Thanks for the vidya!
Ignore the criticism Luke, there are idiots everywhere, your videos are excellent. Thank you for sharing your experiences, greetings to you from Argentina, (with 33 degrees Celsius temperature at the moment).
I retired after 30 years as a letter carrier. 30 years of winters working outside in snow, freezing rain, blizzards that dumped 65 inches of snow over the span of 3 days and watching this nearly gives me PTSD! I love the outdoors but now that I have a choice, being out in the snow on purpose, never again! You outdoor TH-camrs are insane this time of year.
Nonsense. The kid has the right gear, he knows how to use it, and he’s young enough that his blood still runs hot. He’s also smart enough to pull the pin if things get too nasty. I’m getting old now too though. I look at these things and smile and think about when my wife and I did it. Do it while you’re young and you can. Getting old changes things so do it while you can!
As a xdeer hunter, you just really want to be out there. Like the ice fishermen sitting on the bucket, without the tent. ( And people leave you alone 😂😂😂 ) Was a storm walker in my youth. And xmilitary stationed in SD, flight line. (- 10 to -30 degrees Fahrenheit). My brother did stuff like this , but I don't ice fish either. The trick is being warm and comfortable, then it's fun. With the right gear🤔🤔 ( like a flame thrower for that icey walkway😂 Check out rirang on air , south Korean utuber who camps in the snow and ice. 😂😂 With a happy attitude. And camps with CATS 😂😂😂 at campgrounds. Easy on the eyes with subtotals. Makes me long to travel again .
@@scottzackery3209I’ve never gone hunting before but the 2 backpacking trips I’ve done really left an impression on me. Kinda like you said I just love being out there, it’s like an itch for me that needs to be scratched every few months 🤣
Nope called a sense of adventure and apparently you have lost it. I served 24 years in the army and my sense of adventure is strong. The big difference is in the military I had to do it and with equipment that weighed a ton and usually almost worthless. Now I chose what gear I want to use and how much it weighs and with Luke's help here what gear works and what gear doesn't.
I probably would never attempt winter tent camping. I have a huge fear of freezing to death, even if I'm well prepared. I'd rather have winter "camping" in a cabin, van, mobile home, etc. where I can be perfectly safe from the cold and wind (with solid walls)... so that even if heating doesn't work, I'm still safe with blankets. I'd love to try it one day, but I'll never do it in a tent away from any "solid" roof. I perfectly understand you, even though I don't work "outside".
I just remembered while watching you unpack your chair . I used to use the bag for snow if i had run out of water . It meant that i could get enough snow to get a full can of water and not have to go scoop cups or handfuls up one at a time .
Yes ! I agree! These things are usually edited out of videos so that everything seems to go seemingly perfect. We all know, real life in the field is NEVER perfect !
Another thing i just remembered . We used to use strips of tyre innertube to start fires . No matter how wet or cold . They would burn for long enough to get the kindling to catch .
I just wanted to say thank you for doing what you do. I work in an office all the time and don't have the health to get out and do the things in the outdoors that I would like to. But, I feel like I get to be part of your trips with every video and it gives me a mental break from the boring every day life. THANK YOU.
I had a similar experience with a much more budget backpacking tent. The nylon/fiberglass cross-pole similar to that tent snapped on me in the middle of the night and scared the crap out of me. Luckily I was able to send it back, and that's when I got the Alps Mountaineering Lynx that I've used for many years now. Cheers.
Divine intervention? As an old guy, you look back and sometimes,.... patterns emerge. They're hard to miss and go beyond simple coincidence. That's all I'll say on that. Many of us have had poles break at some point. I remember using a manzanita twig to make a splint once. Can't remember what I used to tie it with but I remember that it held. Manzanita is pretty stiff for such things; almost like nature's fiberglass. Can even use it for tent stakes,...or emergency food. It's a western category of species but there must be an equivalent elsewhere. Another good one. Cheers. 👍
Luke, you can repair that tent pole with a hardwood wooden dowel that will fit within the inside diameter of the pole. Some Titebond or Gorilla wood glues would work well to secure it. And you may be able to carry a couple of spare dowels sections with you if they will fit your assortment of tents. I hope that you can take out the ICS (Improved Combat Shelter) for a winter trip. I bought one after watching your reviews on it but that was quite a few years ago. We enjoy your videos and look forward to seeing more.

Would be really cool to see a behind the scenes video. Of how you go about filming and editing your video and audio. That alone is a major task in of itself.
❤❤❤ love your videos, they are so educational, inspiring, fun, and appreciated! Thank you for taking the time to help us all to be encouraged for the adventure of “doing it!” Setting up camp, acknowledging the dangers, being prepared always, and using common sense and wisdom. Happy 🎉New Year Luke Suzy(Susie, Sue, Susan, Mrs. S) and family!
Luke I used a Joe's hand cleaner wipe last camping trip to try and get the carbon off. It actually worked really well and wasn't a lot of work. I haven't found much they won't take off, we have grease from hydraulic stuff at work and that's what we use to get it off our hands. Might try them if you can find some.
I love it when the coyotes wake up to hunt. Last time I went camping I got woke up at around 2am with them making the ruckus. Got out to see what was up and the moon had come up.
The black layer built up on the bottom of your kettle is easy to get off. Heat the empty kettle over just enough of a fire to melt it and set it on fire, what doesn't burn will come off with a little sand rubbed into it. If you just heat it until it melts you can collect it on a stick and use it to glue something, like the rubber base back onto a stainless steel coffee mug. I did that and it's still holding 5 years later. Keep it up and don't let the coyotes eat you.
You should (you probably have already done it) do a video about care of gear after an adventure. How to dry it, where you should set it up, restocking and maintenance of the gear you use. Just remember to cover windows and be careful of your background. Too many crazies out there. OR, contact local American Legion Post and use their hall. Just a suggestion. Happy New Year.
Thanks for doing these videos. Viewing on my phone from my hospital bed. I can at least enjoy what I love to do. Now yo get the BP and BS under control so can get out and adventure!!!
Remember the military is away a victim of the lowest bidder. The final price isn’t but the product will be. We learned just to “Embrace the suck” and adapt and overcome. Well done.
Greetings from Memphis! My husband and I laughed when you mentioned Tony's tug tug. You and Tony need to do camp together. That would be a hoot. Thanks for the videos. We have not missed one in the last year. Happy New Year to you and Suzie!
Happy New Year, Luke! Our trip down in Florida was fabulous. It really pays to get out to see the fog rising off a creek while the sun rises with a pink wash, even at 45°F!
I personally like your adventures. It does inspire me. But my physical problems keep me from backpacking any more. This does remind me of past younger times in the great out doors. Keep up the great content. Thanks
Regarding your equipment failure, any time you transition from a stronger part to a weaker part you get a stress point. In this case, you have a stronger and stiffer hub, and a weaker and more flexible pole. This produces a stress point where the pole enters the hub. To avoid this failure, you have to avoid bending the pole at the hub. In this case, the pole broke when you tried to attach the cross pole. It appears the cross pole is also inserted into the hub. This could be a good argument for a separate cross pole. I'll keep that in mind for my next tent. Also a good argument for the design of my current tent.
Hi Luke, I hope your family had a wonderful Christmas and a Happy New Year. I love both you and Susie. Tony is a great guy, too. . Thanks for the camping today. I always enjoy it….🙋🏻♀️🙏💕

Thanks for doing these videos. Viewing on my phone from my hospital bed. I can at least enjoy what I love to do. Now yo get the BP and BS under control so can get out and adventure!!!
Another great video!
Remember the military is away a victim of the lowest bidder. The final price isn’t but the product will be. We learned just to “Embrace the suck” and adapt and overcome. Well done.
Place some insulation between your fuel cannister and the ground once you've warmed it inside your jacket
What about making something from a wholly sock or something, I'm sure it would help.
Thank you for your content. I appreciate that. I like your attitude.
Thanks
Hey Luke, can you maybe take some time to show how you fit all your gear in your bag. I struggle with that.
Never mind, I should have just waited till the end
Regarding your equipment failure, any time you transition from a stronger part to a weaker part you get a stress point. In this case, you have a stronger and stiffer hub, and a weaker and more flexible pole. This produces a stress point where the pole enters the hub. To avoid this failure, you have to avoid bending the pole at the hub. In this case, the pole broke when you tried to attach the cross pole. It appears the cross pole is also inserted into the hub. This could be a good argument for a separate cross pole. I'll keep that in mind for my next tent. Also a good argument for the design of my current tent.
Great point. Also the poles simply suck and should be replaced with the aluminum ones.
Hi Luke, I hope your family had a wonderful Christmas and a Happy New Year. I love both you and Susie. Tony is a great guy, too. . Thanks for the camping today. I always enjoy it….🙋🏻♀️🙏💕
That sun set was AMAZING. I LOVE a nice sunset 🌇 ❤❤
