  • The ChatterBait bladed jig has quickly become one of the most productive tournament baits of all time thanks to its fish-triggering ability and extreme versatility. Pro bass angler, Brett Hite, is one of the ChatterBait OGs and credits the bait to over 1 million dollars in tournament winnings. He shares the top 3 reasons why ChatterBaits excel for the average angler to tournament pro, the best gear for fishing the bait (rod, reel, line, and trailers), and the biggest avoidable mistake that leads to lost fish.

    Hite equates ChatterBait action to a lipless and squarebill crankbait combined - a tight wiggle and intense vibration coupled with excellent deflection characteristics is a proven trigger for bass. But unlike trebled baits, you can fish ChatterBaits in cover types and depths you can't effectively fish other reaction baits. Whether you're an experienced ChatterBait angler or new to the technique, you're bound to find some useful and interesting information in this video.

    I am 47 years old, and just started fishing again in March of 2019... after a 26 year hiatus from it. In 1993 when I last fished, there was no such thing as a chatterbait or bladed jig. I started watching fishing videos on TH-cam, and discovered this chatterbait. I just HAD to try it. So I got one, and it was the first lure I threw upon my return to fishing. On my 3rd cast I hooked into and landed a 5lb 2oz largemouth... my new PB. Needless to say, I was hooked! (No pun intended) And the chatterbait has been my #1 confidence lure since. Then I caught wind of the Jackhammer. I swallowed the $16.99 price tag and got one... the Hites Hot Craw color. After fishing with about every other chatterbait Zman makes, I instantly fell in love with the Jackhammer. It starts and stops almost instantly, stays down, and has a great action and hook up ratio. It also seems to get the bigger bites. It's the only chatterbait I use, unless they are on backorder and unavailable. In which case I use the Strike King thunder cricket. It doesn't thump as hard as the Jackhammer, but it's my second choice. Unfortunately right now the Jackhammers are hard to come by, at least certain colors. So I try to stock up on them when they are available. Anyway, thanks for sharing this video. And thanks for being a huge part of designing this bait. Anyone who hasn't tried one yet, don't put it off any longer. Get one, and you will get bit.

      @@xDx0xUxGx really? That sucks 😔 I had a friend that I turned on to them, and he didn't catch anything for awhile, and was gonna give up on it. But I rode him about it and showed him how I was fishing them, where, and when... and he stuck with it. He started catching fish a few weeks ago and now he's hooked. He rarely ties anything else on now. I guess you just have to stay with it, and vary your retrieves. I rarely just fish a straight retrieve. Play with it, and don't be afraid to throw up around cover. That's one of the things I like most about it, that I can fish it just about anywhere. Maybe I just lucked into the right presentation and started catching fish. I certainly have days where I don't get bit at all on it. Sometimes I have to downsize my trailer, and change up my retrieve. Just play with it, and I guarantee you will catch fish. Where are you located? What area of the country/world?

      @@xDx0xUxGx I was in Connecticut when I started fishing again. I'm from Virginia, and that's where I live now. But yes, I started with the original as well. The first color I used was a crawfish type color (I can't remember the actual name of the color 😕). But I was fishing it like a jig... hopping it off the bottom. And I got bit on the fall most of the time, as is the case alot of the time when fishing like that. But I've played around with different retrieves alot

    WOW! you are awesome, thank you for your contribution to the sport of hunting for big bass . I hadn't been on vacation for 4 years I took a trip to Douglas lake for a weeks vacation and my 2nd week is back home I bought a Colorado XT modified it and added a trolling motor got to the lake house I rented for a week and then on the 2nd day caring my battery to the rig on the dock I slipped stepping on to the dock and really bruised my leg bad I'm 60 and it swelled up pretty bad but I was stubborn and bit the bullet fished for 6 days and did not catch a thing , my confidence was shattered, I went back home to spend my 2nd week trying to ice my leg and do some local fishing still with no luck It's now Friday and my last 2 days of fishing vacation Today (Friday) I came across your Jack hammer chatter bait video's I drove over to Dicks sporting goods and bought 2 of your 3/8 oz. jack hammer Green Pumpkin and the fish trailer when I was heading home there was just enough sun light to stop at a local retention pond, I just wanted to see and most of all feel /cast not expecting to catch any thing, on the 3 cast Bam about a 2 pounder then the next cast BOOM a larger one but I didn't set the hook good and didn't land him over the next few casts almost every time I got hit and landed a few more all around 2+ pounds ... WOW thank you thank you so much its brought my confidence back. I'm heading out to the local Rez first thing in the morning there is 5 and 6 pound bass in there. I'm confident enough to maybe have some fish story's to tell when I get back to work on Monday I'll be still limping but at least I can say I won the battel , hopefully
    take care, Regards Charlie

    I like to use a Fluke or a Rage Tail Menace (rigged vertical and unseparated) on a Chatter. Paddle tails just don't look right to me; the exception being 6th Sense's paddle (much tighter action). Great info! If an angler says they've won a million on a bait, it's best to give it a try.

    I have a medium action Diawa Elimator graphite 6'6 rod with a Quantum Pulse 6 to 6 to 1 baitcaster on it. I use a Chatterbait in Chartreuse and white 3/8 oz with a 'Spike it' Chartreuse dyed fluke trailer with garlic scent. Its November and 75 degrees. That Chatterbait killed them largemouth. Caught many bigger bass. 4 and 5 pounders. I also tried White Chatterbait with a White fluke trailer. It catches them just as well in Clear water. The grass is still green here in Indiana. So I rip it threw the grass. Bam! They hit it hard! I use 30 pound Suffix 832 in moss green color. I spray Crawdad Bang scent every 3 casts. This is a killer combo for me. If the Chatterbait don't work. Chartreuse spinner bait double willow blades. Is mu back up. Shawn.

    • @Wired2Fish
      @Wired2Fish  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Matt, we can't speak directly for Brett, but I'll share my opinion on the matter (Ryan from W2F). I think 20lb is more than necessary for a lot of northern fisheries, particularly if you're not dealing with woody cover (including coarse woody grass like bullrushes), sharp rock or manmade stuff like docks. For example, I put an absolute hammering on 3- to 5-pound bass last fall using the 1-1/4 JackHammer around graveling bottoms, over boulders, and around grass edges using 14-pound Sufix Advance Fluorocarbon. Had zero breakage issues. I wanted a smaller line diameter for cutting the water for fishing deep more efficiently and it worked excellently on a standard medium heavy rod. I think you'll do great with a MH/16lb.

    Is there a certain time of year or particular condition that is good to throw the chatterbait? Or is it effective year round in cool or warm water?

    • @Wired2Fish
      @Wired2Fish  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Good question Ryan. It truly is a bait with year-round appeal -- from the pre-spawn to late fall, our staff has had excellent success. Just adjust weights and experiment with different trailers to dial-in what the bass want. For deep water, we often fish the 3/4- and 1-1/4-ounce sizes to get to the bottom quickly and stay there. The 3/8- and 1/2-ounce models work well in say less than 10 feet of water. A slower retrieve often gets bit better in cold water or dealing with negative bass, but never overlook fishing fast or with an aggressive lift and pause across the bottom...this can cause reaction strikes slower retrieves fail to generate.

      Also don't sleep on making your own. The Queens Tackle Switch Blades make it super easy to make your own. I used to have to find a jig with a horizontal line tie and use a split ring. I used to use the Phenix Vibrator Blades and they worked great. But there were times that the split ring would get in an odd position and you would need to rip the rod to get it to vibrate.
      But now you can use a jig with a vertical line tie and direct connect it to the blade. This lets you easily customize the weight, jig style, skirt, etc. The combo I use costs less than $5 per chatterbait and the jig starts vibrating the instant you turn the handle and is ultra consistent.

You don’t need a specialized rod to fish spinnerbaits or chatterbaits. It can’t hurt but you most certainly don’t need a dedicated setup. @@TCX-up6hs Thx for your info. Im a bank angler and i cant carry all these rods. I caught my 1st bladed jig bass using a Shimano Zodias 7-2 MH fast. Im glad to hear i dont need to go buy a different rod.

    Now I regret buying three original chatterbaits because they were cheaper.

      Hi James, it's good to get a broad sample of their product line to see what you and the bass you target prefer You may find the original performs just fine.

      It's situational not versatile

      I've tried it in various places and conditions, but not a single bite.

      It's certainly situational but we also consider it versatile. Skipping docks, mid-depth edges, dredging the bottom in 25 FOW with the 1-1/4-ounce. It gets it done in a lot of difference situations.

      @@Wired2Fish We don't have docks in any of the lakes near me. All we have are small floating platforms at the boat launches. I've tried around weed edges, over submerged weeds, lay downs, lily pads and rocks. I've tried a lot of different types of retrieves, different colors and trailers, but no bites...

    Can’t buy a damn bite with a chatterbait. I think I’ve had one bite in my life with a Jackhammer.
