In the 90s my father loved that camera so much he bought half a dozen for the whole family. I still remember the odd looks from bystanders when I aimed with the samurai. Best regards from Berlin.
Another unusual feature of the camera is that it was available in both right and left hand versions. They were mirrored layouts with the grip and shutter button on the appropriate side. It was definitely quirky.
Only the Samurai Z and Z2 were sold as left hand versions. (Z/L and Z2/L) the Z/ZL is much better as it includes intervalometer and other "useful" settings.
Fantastic camera and certainly the best in the series of four from Yashica. Probably the first real bridge camera too. Halfframe is really very close to a whole cinema frame in the space it takes on the film (a bit bigger in fact). Images that used to be blown up on huge screens. The X3.0 is AFAIK the only camera that runs the film through in the correct way for that format. That is, vertically. That means horizontal frames as the default. The autofocus is definitely geared towards daylight or well lit rooms. With that it works very well and as fast as you need for relatively still subjects. A trick for low light that is mentioned in the manual. It is to find a well lit point at approximately the same distance as the one you want in focus, half-press the shutter and recompose. The flash should be on for this naturally. The lens on this is actually very, very good. Yashica where underrated as lens designers and knew how to chose the best manufacturers for the elements. It has many features not mentioned in this video too: - Spotmetering. Probably the only halfframe with this feature. - Date function, which actually looks pretty cool. - standard 49mm filter. Which means you can use any filter with that size you might have. Including diopters and tele extenders which was actually made for this model. - Has build in viewfinder diopter. - Two custom bags, that make it look even more straight out of Back to the Future II or Akira. - Comes in three accent colours. Red, green/turquoise, black, and gold. - Hot shoe, external flash, soft handstrap, are some of the accessories. - Multible focus and exposures modes. Find the manual on Butkus. - There is a “secret” port on the bottom that was never officially used. It’s an external trigger, that some people have used for doing stereo of Multicam setups. Also what other camera can claim to have music written to it by a legend like Ryuichi Sakamoto? th-cam.com/video/Ba6Fd0sMkeI/w-d-xo.html
Happy Birthday! Good idea using half frame for diptychs, never thought of that. Got an Olympus pen half frame and this video has just give it new life. Many thanks
3 years of anxiety from not knowing when the next nf video will be. Keep it up! Also, it would be great to see that video you mentioned about how you go about finding camera gear online
I got a camera in a vintage store in Munich and didn't use it for four years, I decided to take it out and play with it and when I got the film back I was surprised with a half frame camera. Some of the photos came out really cool! But yeah don't crop 😅 ps happy birthday 🎂 💐🎉 I'm glad to be here, but also sad it took me this long to find you guys
Congratulations! been watching your videos since 2017 and also got a couple of film cameras in the mean time. Thanks for running a truly inspiring youtube channel.
Congrats on three years man! I’ve been here for two and a half of them lol By far my favorite film Photography channel! You seem like such a cool guy George! And your tattoos are sick lol
I wonder if given the right technique/ setup one could create 3D images by having the left eye view on the first half frame and the right eye view on the second one...
HAPPY BIRTHDAY NEGATIVE FEEDBACK ❤️ #birthdaywellgergo WELL THEN IM OLD NOW HAHAHAHA. I remember watching your first ever vid and completely there to support this amazing channel ✨
i have one of these and it takes me years to finish a roll of film. just sent one off to be developed can't wait to see what's on it because i have no idea :)
This is kind of creepy but I saw you on the Alec soth exhibition. I never expected to see you in person because I’m from South America jj so lucky to run into my favorite photographer and my favorite photographer/TH-camr at the same time haha happy birthday :)
Hey dude love your channel. I’m sure you mentioned it before but I’m typing this on a bus... where do you get your half frame (or all) your film developed? Where I’m going doesn’t offer the 2 options for half frame.
I've just bought your Tshirt, a man able to test, to understand a Yashica samourai and to make a creative use of it, definitely deserves support ! (Laurent from France) By the way happy birthday ! Mine was 12 days ago. Wonder what kind of scanner you're using...
what are the odds that yesterday a guy in a thrift shop gave me a samurai for free. it has a dead battery but yeah, i'm pretty excited to shoot with it

A B&W contact sheet would look great with this
Hell yeah, maybe the Samurai will raise in value now and I can sell mine. It’s a wicked cam though.
Glad I got mine before the storm...
what a beauty
Seems like a very strange camera.
I like it!
Does anyone know what kind of film he used?
So many people in the Bay Area are shooting with that thing.

AYY MY MAN MARK
Yes, more Aria

Also if ever possible id love to buy the embroided logo Tee - pink on white. That would be so dope
3 frames a second is similar to the rate of the Lomokino.... you mentioned this feels like a camcorder.... i’m getting ideas
Lovely
Do you still like this camera or even use it?
Hahaha that last quote!
DAMN i gotta get one
I’ve got one as well, but there is a weird battery, I have no idea how to replace them 🤷♂️
I saw one of these on eBay but I decided against buying it at the time; maybe I should get one soon
i own one, not the gold variant though. i love it
lol.... I love the VERY motivating slogan of "join the revolution and lose the resolution."
Do a review on that yashica 35mm film lol
Hey George, if you're getting into bizarro film cameras, you ought to give the Fujifilm Discovery 3000 a look.
