i thought you would be on street or city square or something, with 'photo tent', portraits of bewildered families, loud zap noise and smoke from the flash
you agreed to do a photoshoot for this with my friend, he waited all day for you and you never turned up, and didn’t give him an explanation. we were both really big fans and feel let down.
That’s a great idea for a project. I take my 4x5 out on walks and hikes, and take photos of people I meet along the way. It’s been very enjoyable and I’ve met some really interesting people.
Get a proper rucksack not a camera bag, totally different for your back. I use an osprey with a shootsac across my body and tripod balanced on my shoulder.
@@NegativeFeedback yes! I use a modern Russian army rucksack to carry my 8x10 up the mountains here in Canada for my photography. The difference between that and a camera bag for proper back support is insane. Especially when you get one with a frame built into it. Makes a huge difference. Before I would only bring my 8x10 to places in the mountains I could drive too. The backpacks are meant to make it as easy as possible for a soldier to carry 75-100lbs of equipment. Even a hiking rucksack will do the trick.
Shooting with different camera formats bring a different shooting experience and I often change my shooting style with it! Seems like you have a certain look that you enjoy with the tilt shift focus. I'm digging it and glad you're having fun with it, it shows in the video! Fun vid george ✌️
I absolutely love your video format and admire your photography. This is the first video of yours I’ve seen and man you’ve got a VERY distinct and pleasing style. Keep up the good work
Great works. I like how you addressed the obvious camera being there actually allows the subject embraces the fact that the camera is there. One thing I'd like to ask is that, having such a short DOF, how did you make sure the subject didn't move after you compose and be in focus? what aperture/ shutter speed did you shoot at?
I just have to be very clear whilst i'm setting up the camera, and make them aware that when i'm focused they need to try and stay still. Most of these images were shot at f5.6 which is the most open these lenses go, I think shutter speeds were around 1/8 for most - was quite a dark day.
i really want to start a photo project and i was thinking that carrying my 35mm everywhere was a bummer i cannot imagine carrying an 8x10 lmao i love your vids bro
Unusual to see portraits with a quiet, static feel about them instead of the default sponteneity. Very [insert sponsor] Portrait of the Year Award. Though I think you need to find someone in difficult circumstances to get a commendation or above.
A normal lens focal length is equal to the diagonal of the image Normal lens for an 8x10 is 305mm which in 35mm is 42mm and 88.6mm for 6x7 ideal format.
Man, hope you get paid well. Portra 8X10 @ £25.00 a sheet before processing? Way out of my league. I think that I stay with 4X5. In all these portraits, what strikes me is how lonely they look, even when they have their partners present.
I paid considerably less for the portra I have, which is 15 years expired - but yeah i've only ever bought fresh portra twice and a commissioner covered the costs
Man, love this. I love 8x10 but just got a 4x5 b/c of the expense. It's literally 1/4 of the price and it'll allow me to shoot a lot more and not be overally precious about shooting. I'm aiming to shoot 20-50 sheets per session. Amazing portraits.
The cost of film for a 8x10 would not allow me to use this format. So I use expired photographic paper in what's called the reverse positive process. Besides providing a very distinctive look and reducing the costs per sheet to only a few cents even for my 11x14 camera, this way you also get unique originals you can put on the wall just like an oil painting. I really like your pictures. Personally I'm not fond of those razor thin sharpness areas most large format photographers seem to aim for, and I was quite happy that you too quite often aim for getting the whole person in focus, not just the eyes and the tip of the nose, where already the ears are out of focus. By the way, a 300mm lens on an 8x10 is equivalent to 39mm on "normal" full frame or 35mm cameras. The equivalent of 50mm on an 8x10 would be 385mm.
Lovely video and photos. I used to think a Pentax 67 was a big beast but that 8x10 is awesome. The family portrait with the dog I thought was a triumph given the camera.
I just discovered the 8x10 format and I'm at a loss of words. I feel like I'm watching a sorcer casting spells in a foreign language. What I do know is that it's bloody cool
Five seconds in and you've already made me feel better. I use 4x5 and exposed an entire FOUR sheets of film in 2020. To make it worse, a) I was merely mucking about with a new-to-me monolight and a tailor's dummy and, b) I broke one of the blimmin' springs on the bail back in the process. During 2021, I crawled back into my cave where I could cause little damage! Well done, brave you, for getting out there and feeding your lovely camera!
Love the portraits George, very inspiring. I have the C810V as well and am definitely going to try a few indoor portraits. My widest lens is the Fuji 250/6.7, hopefully sufficiently wide for indoor spaces. :-)
I have the same issue with my medium format. I have an Fuji GW680 and it’s a hassle for me to take it anywhere’s. I have make myself take it sometimes so it doesn’t go to waste.
I see your shooting indoors with a lot of natural light, what kind of readings are you getting whilst shooting with 400 speed film? What are you doing in case the natural light isn’t enough? Thanks for the great video George
Of all the 'film' channels, yours resonates with me the most. Excellent work, presentation, and just so relatable and real. Thank YOU
Thanks Russell, glad you enjoy
Absolutely in love with the portrait at 4:27!
i thought you would be on street or city square or something, with 'photo tent', portraits of bewildered families, loud zap noise and smoke from the flash
instead it's just the mundanity of people that could've been inferred from looking at any of your videos or in fact just you.
What a great video, i love the detail of the photos. Btw is curious to see all that people but cant hear their voices.
Do bigger format exist?
Your last 8x10 video was part of the reason I tried to get into 8x10 with an Intrepid. I am still mentally recovering from that debacle.
sorry to your wallet and back
Dude, this is so good.
Thank you
Wow great stuff!
legend💯

This is very sad.
i think a plastic point and shoot is soooo much simpler to use... but hey

imagine that one day there will be 8x10 digital cameras 🤣
it's caled Kepler Telescope
There is a 8x10 sensor made for a insane landscape photographer if I recall correctly
doctor: "George how did you broke your back?"
george: " I though it would be simpler than a digital camera (cries)"
I really did forget how awful it is to carry round on foot.

how do you scan these 8x10 sheet films? I suppose it is by DSLR scanning? I am curious how to you hold the sheet films in place?

Really nice and realistic video showing realistic results, and I appreciate you showing how you learn and sharing your goals. Cheers!
This is an amazing video! I have been thinking about getting a 4 x 5 but 8 x10 seems like the way yo go. But where do I get talent like yours? :-)

Such a beautiful body of work, George. Really enjoyed hearing your accompanying thought process too!
"If I was using a smaller camera like the rz67"
Everyone who shoots 35: 🤔
The calmness of large format is hard to achieve in 135.

1. does anyone know which large format camera and lens hes using for these shots
2. does anyone know how he got that POV angle at 0:44
watching this before going to the darkroom, great work George!
The portrait of Naomi (sp?) and Saffron is incredible.
I'm a simple man
I get a George notification and I click it
thank you, english willem verbeeck, very cool
The lighting in that last backyard bit is so nice
I was gonna say thanks, but it's the suns fault really
I forgot the quality that have this kind of format, just AMAZING!!!
Excellent work. How did u meter?
What lens were you using?
Do you know any normal people?

WAHOO thanks for our portrait - proper COOL camera
Love the colour work - on the other hand, black and white, contact printed, beautiful way to work
These portraits and your thought process on composing 8x10 reminds me of Rineke Dijkstra's work. Especially the isolation. Any connection there?
Cool af
Did I miss how you are scanning or printing these.? Printing seems to be the next trick in the 8x10 process.

Awesome work man. If you ever come to New Zealand sing out, would love to have a portrait taken and show you round.
love your work George, thanks for keeping us all inspired
absolutely stunning photos. I love your work in general, but you really shine on this 8x10.
i would love to see how you shoot large foirmat, all of it settings and so on
Could you get the same tilt effect on a digital tilt/shift lens?
The results are stunning. I especially love the sharpness and detail of the color photos.
Another cool video and of course wonderful shots!!!
I'd buy a book of people in their houses
All I dream is a portrait of me in 8X10, so good !
The images are surreal.
Dude dude dude I got a question: which is heavier, Pentax 6x7 or that large 8x10 camera?
The 8x10 by a mile. You can easily carry 40 to 50 pounds with a complete outfit.
Great video, I wanna see more 35mm stuff
Happy to see that new go pro being put to use! :D
The color couple shots are wonderful.
incredible
This is so cool. And why would you down vote this?
Superb set of images fella. 👍🏼
