The whole half frame thing started up in the 1960s, about the time I got into photography seriously. I never got involved at the time. Years later, I thought to get one and started looking to the Samuri. Several different models were made over the years, the main differences being the zoom range and aperture of the lens. I was about to acquire one when I realized that its exposure process is fully automatic with no practical user adjustments. For me, that killed the deal right there. Considering that most people shooting film today are scanning their negatives and posting digital positive images on social media of some sort, I'm surprised that there has been no craze for half frame, as those end-uses would look as good from the half as from full frame.
Just when I thought I've seen all the 1/2 frame cameras, you come out with this video. Nice job on the video. It was really well done. Keep up the great work! Also, GO BLUE (saw your Michigan t-shirt)!!
Watching this because I found one in a local antique store like you mentioned lol. Appears to work, can't wait to see the images! Definitely enjoy not looking like a pro, used to lug around a Nikon F5, almost got beat up once for taking a picture of some guys car😂
I'm sold, I've ordered one from ebay. One question, you mention this is an SLR, can you actually see in the viewfinder that you have acquired focus? I know the half-press will light up an LED that the camera has locked on to something, but can you actually see that you have focused on a person rather than the background?
Hi! I think you just kind of have to judge by looking through the viewfinder. It is a proper SLR and not a rangefinder so if it is focused in the viewfinder, the final image should be focused properly as well
In my research, there was no manual samurai as far as I could tell. However, there were some digital samurais which I tried to track down to purchase myself, with no luck unfortunately. The Olympus pen's are also half frame and (I think) are manual but they aren't the same aesthetically as the Samurai. Thanks for watching!
@@DrewWaddell ah thats a shame, still I am looking for a point and shoot for a friend so maybe I can pick one up for him! It would be a great prop for portraits 😂🤣
I have the Pen EE and the Samurai I love the fact that the Samurai takes landscape photos in its upright position 🙂 I love this camera!

another great video king😊
I shoot the Olympus pen ft with both the 35 and 25mm lenses. but i do like the samurai with the landscape format
Hey what film did you use for these shots? They look awesome! Ordered a Samurai X2 recently and looking to have some great photos like yours.
I used Cinestill 800 and Fuji Superia 400! If you see any glowing around bright lights, then its Cinestill. Glad to here you picked one up, enjoy :)
Does the film roll rewinds automatically? I just got mine and the film is not going back to the canister.
Yes, the film should rewind automatically! There may be something wrong with your copy :(

@@DrewWaddell just got my first 2 rolls from the lab, some absolute banger photos! Great recommendation, thank you.
Was there any manual version or similar style camera in manual, searching for a video on this camera I saw some similar yashicas, maybe they have one?

OK that was the most intensely synthy trying to be 80s intro I've ever heard. Wow.
