I first got into half-frame with a broken Konica EYE that I got for free when Michael’s Cameras in Melbourne CBD closed down, which I’m still trying to source a working one or repair one of the ones I own, but I stumbled across a completely functional Yashica Samurai for $120 at Waverley Bazaar a few months ago and that has become one of my daily driver cameras. I don’t think I’ll ever need any other point-and-shoot, I absolutely love it.
I love my Petri Compact. It's ugly AF but it's heavy an sturdy, full manual, trigger film advance mechanism (that's pretty cool), and most importantly the lens is amazingly sharp and contrasty and renders colors really well (multi coated). I often shoot it in landscape orientation for that sweet cinematic 1.33:1 aspect ratio :)
I think Ektar used to be a lens design name from Kodak, like Summicron. They also just announced a new version of the H35 with a glass element and one acrylic one instead of two plastic elements. It also got a shutter cable thread and tripod socket.
Yeah there's a famous large format lens called the aero Ektar (178mm f2.5). It's basically the large format version of the canon F 0.95 dream lens. Kodak used to make a lot of stuff back in the day.
"Ektar" was the name Kodak pasted on its best quality lenses for decades. After they abandoned quality camera manufacturing, they recycled the name for their best quality films. "Ektar" did not designate a particular design of lens, whereas "Summicron" does. Kodak used it on cameras lenses of many focal lengths and purposes, as well as enlarging lenses. It's use on a Chinese plastic half frame junker is a bit low class, however.

I want to keep shooting and trying out new 35mm film rolls that I havent shot with but it gets pricy. Particularly when it comes to developing film 😅😭
The high point in half frame camera production was from early 1960 to mid-1970s. The Konica Recorder (aka AA-35) came along after half frame was mostly a blast from the past. So, it has all the autofocus, auto-exposure point-n-shoot bells and whistles, and it is a terrific camera. It comes with two built in problems: (1) It's rather lightly built with a poor external finish. As a result, they usually look like they have the crap beaten out of them, and the battery door is often broken. (2) While they were not that cheap when new, they've acquired a used price which is large, compared to the best half frame models. If this video turns you on to half frame, consider the follow as easier to find and usually cheaper: Canon Demi (particularly the EE-17); Canon Demi (other versions), Canon Dial(aka Bell & Howell Dial), Ricoh Auto Half (aka Ansco Memo II). Note that none of these cameras (except the Demi models) are as durable as a full sized SLR, and most ar more than 50 years old, so shop to avoid damaged goods and do not plan to have a failed unit CLA'd back to life - a shop probably won't touch 'em. Anyone have a nice looking, working Recorder to sell me for $125?
@@loulouki The Oly Pens launched the popularity of half frame, but most of them are quite crudely designed with minimal functions. They are the sort of things that you buy for $40 or less and plan to have to rip into guided by a DIY repair video on YT, even if it's working when you buy it. I've got a Oly EE-2, which I think will still work if I over open it and clean the stuck shutter. I have a B&H/Canon Dial, which works perfectly when I work around not having a 1.35 Volt mercury battery to power its auto-only exposure meter. And, then there is the minty Canon Demi ee-17 which is stuck hard on EI 100 for the meter. I suspect that if/when I invest the ridiculous time required to open the thing, I'll find the meter's wiring joints are corroded and will have to be resoldered or wiring replaced. This is the one I'll probably tackle first, as when restored (I hope eternal), it will be just magnificent. Thankfully, all is within my capacity and tools on hand, but not many others could say the same, I'm afraid.

Here's another fun project for you: A half-frame diptic combined with a single 645 image. Two babies with a big sibling all in 3:4 aspect ratio
Caleb, the Recorder may not have been on the "best of" list of half frame cameras, effectively flying under the radar. But do you think it's going to stay that way after you make a video about it? And honestly Caleb, eBay sold listings currently peg prices for this camera between $225-350. For a half frame camera, really???
It's ironic to feature a mid 80s automatic camera on a channel called "Bad Flashes". Mid 80s point and shoots used electrolytic capacitors and are known for having mostly died by now. The capacitors leak and nearly all of them are on deaths door 45 years later.
On the DX code bit: the camera should be capable of reading 800 ISO film (with 3 pins, it should be able to read 3200 ISO), if it has the DX code pins to read 400 ISO. What it does with that will vary, but it will likely just treat anything higher than 400 as 400, and anything lower than 100 as 100, if the manufacturer didn't do anything crazy (which is totally possible).
You were lucky this camera “fell” into your lap. It is quite overpriced with most ebay samples going for $250 to $350. A better buy is the Olympus Pen series (no flash but that’s ok) which has a great lens. Also the new Ektar H35 series plastic cameras for $50. But thanks for showing us this cool camera anyway!
I have a Konica Autorex half frame SLR, I dont want to talk about Konica cameras as people are still sleeping on them. Please stop talking about Konica OK Caleb? As to the whole Ektar thing... Ektar is the traditional name for Kodak's premium cameras. It is weird that Kodak considers a plastic half frame camera but that is why Kodak is not Fuji. Kodak does not know how to make cameras, ironically, Fuji does not how to make film anymore either. The two things equal themselves out I guess? Umm.... Not really. Hexanon lenses are amazing. You shoot Leica also, you should try some of the Koica Hexanon M mount lenses.
@@BadFlashes I have used most Konica glass, I am a bit of a konicaphile, its generally quite well rated. Konica had some of its best glass, especially that made in the 1980s. Talking to my local camera technician its because a lot of things... But most Konica glass during the 1980s was actually made by Leica. It was put together by companies in Japan generally Tokina and Cosina. Konica was the third horse in the race which eventually failed because they never crossed the auto focus barrier in their SLRs, ironically, even though they have a decent flange distance and it would not have been impossible to put an auto focus motor inside the lens. Its self explanatory, you can adopt pretty much any lens known to man kind to a Konica SLR cameraa... Nikon, M42, Leica even, it was done deliberately to entice other camera users to use their bodies... it did not work out past the 1980s Auto focus was one reason, but the other is Konica never really offered a camera with a shutter speed of more than 3.5 frames per second. Which is fine... It just comes down to the facts really, if you are going to shoot something where you need more frames per second get a Nikon, Canon, Pentax, or Minolta. Both things are good. I use an Autoreflex (the original one) because its an SLR, but also because it can expose half frames.
Wow, that’s a lot of really good information. So does that mean the Konica amount glass could’ve been produced by (Leica) but put together by someone else
I got a Pen FV recently, that with the stock 38mm lens is my favourite camera at the moment. It's a cracking lens. It's definitely important to pick the right film, but it's f'ing awesome. (I don't do the dyptic thing). The main problem: - it takes forever to shoot 72 (I've actually gotten 80!). - if you hate scanning film, you'll hate scanning half frame twice as much - 40mm enlarger lenses are a bit rarer
how is it a sleeper, its well known when searching for half frame cameras. Priced around 300usd for a fully electronic camera that can fail at any moment with almost no possibility to be repaired... im staying with my minolta repo, even tho ive got no flash its way more flexible than that camera

A better buy is the Olympus Pen series (no flash but that’s ok) which has a great lens. Also the new Ektar H35 series plastic cameras for $50. But thanks for showing us this cool camera anyway!
Genuinely asking, why are you posting videos at the same time/day as Jason ? Wouldn’t you guys be better posting separately ?
How do you know he doesn’t upload when I do ???? Lol
@@BadFlashes you know what I mean
🤪
Have you shot the Konica M lenses before?
Nikon, M42, Leica even, it was done deliberately to entice other camera users to use their bodies... it did not work out past the 1980s
Auto focus was one reason, but the other is Konica never really offered a camera with a shutter speed of more than 3.5 frames per second.
The main problem:
- it takes forever to shoot 72 (I've actually gotten 80!).
- if you hate scanning film, you'll hate scanning half frame twice as much
- 40mm enlarger lenses are a bit rarer
that price tho...
Not the worst or the best haha
GxAce Casey Cavanaugh too…?? Why do you all know each other?!?! 😵
Met a couple years ago on a trip :)
Half-frame is just aps film wearing a wig 😮
haha naw ... APS sucks hands down lol
The price of Konica Recorder cameras on ebay just doubled......
Nawwww they didn’t haha did they???????????
@@BadFlashes I think so. That means you're officially an "influencer" 😅
Why the fuk is this David dude low-key in everyone’s TH-cam channels just hanging out and participating?? Who the … who is this guy?
Hahaha he is everywhere !!!!
how is it a sleeper, its well known when searching for half frame cameras. Priced around 300usd for a fully electronic camera that can fail at any moment with almost no possibility to be repaired...
im staying with my minolta repo, even tho ive got no flash its way more flexible than that camera
Caleb is a hetero?!!!!
and married!
Marry me
🫶🏼 Oh wow… I’m sorry but you are a bit late. I’m taken .. Maybe in the next life 😝
@@BadFlashes Arrrrright - I’ma keep asking on your future videos in place of a “neat video, Broprah”
