  • It's easy to say the FX30 is the best camera of the 3 hands down, but it's not that simple.
    Camera Christmas is always amazing, but it comes with the stress of deciding is it time to upgrade and get something new to streamline your creative process, or are you good where you are?
    Let's break this down!

    I understand your points. But size and weight are the most important factors for me. I don’t need full size, especially with the full frame lenses price tag. I’ll wait for the bees knees APSC camera to come out.

      Brotha, you are speaking my language! Nothing makes me update my gear faster than lightweight gear that gets the job done. That's by far one of the BIGGEST selling points of the ZV-E1 for me. It's lighter than my a6600 I had, the A74, and even the A7C. I've used and tested all these cameras and the E1 is the weight of the ZV-E10 with A7S 3 like features. I'll take that any day of the week. Even the full frame glass game has changed over the years and there is excellent APS-C sized full frame glass on the market.
      So, I feel every bit of what you're saying. The full frame kit I built out though, I think will surprise a lot of folks.

    Top notch content upload Diana. My A7iv with APS-C mode makes almost every camera I'm tempted to buy not worth the money. Nothing is a true all around upgrade from this fantastic hybrid body. I do still have my A7c as well

    Ms. D, I don't know who edited this video but it was a good time. I can't remember the last time I laughed this much at a tech related video. My 6400 has been acting a little funny so I'm debating sticking with my ZV-1 for a little bit or putting something on my wishlist. I've been fighting off getting a full frame for a long time because I don't need ALL of that but I'll keep my options open.

      I feel you on that. I love all my cameras, but there is a line past a point. I just know the value will continue to depreciate on what I have and if I was going to trade in what I won't be using any longer. Kind of how the ZV-E10 made me put down my a6600, so I'm jumping ahead and getting a head start on all that. I'm believing the a6700 will be dope and easily replace the ZV-E10.

    First, I will NEVER give up dark chocolate for white! I have been using an A6500 for my travel needs for years. I love that camera. I tried the new Sigma 23 mm., 1.4. Beautiful lens. Then I remembered I own a Zeiss Touit, 32 mm., 1.8. How could I so easily forget it? I looked at the Q3, even the Nikon Z8, and decided to stick with the Sony, maybe upgrading to the A6700. My “serious” camera is a Nikon D850 and I own a full complement of lenses. I am a landscape photographer with some street photography thrown in. No video work for me. So, I need to stop looking at new gear and just go out and shoot!

    A new sub here! Great to find your channel and I've been looking through your past content! Love it, and great job explaining products..even for an ol feller like me! Can I ask (I know you get this 100s of times a day), looking at getting a first camera for personal/work use. Mainly for streaming, talking head and maybe the odd remote podcast etc. I'm really drawn to a simply set up of the FX30 with a Sigma 16mm. I've watched a load of video reviews and it seems to tick a lot of my boxes. Where I struggle with right now before jumping in, I see some people recommending getting the XLR handle, mainly to streamline the workflow I guess, ie record straight into the camera without needing to match up in post...do you think the sound quality is good enough, or do you think going the rodecaster duo when it comes out would add that little bit more quality to be able to improve the mic? I have the Rode NT1 gen 5. Thanks a mil, and keep up the great work! Peter, Vancouver.

    • @DianaGladney
      @DianaGladney  ปีที่แล้ว

      Howdy Peter, Welcome to the Glad Gang!
      I have some creator friends that like the handle, and others that don't. You can always do any minimal editing in post, but in your shoes, I'd look at what is your overall workflow and buy based on that vs spot buying gear that may only have one ideal use case, and every other day it just sits collecting dust.
      I'm personally not a fan of syncing the audio in post, so the XLR handle would be ideal in that scenario, especially for a podcast on the go. I usually have the Rodecaster Pro 2 for covering a lot of bases, but in those shoes of traveling, I'd definitely get the handle and at least test it out and see how well you personally like it or not.
      Plus, any noise you can always minimize in post in editing, as long as it's not excessive.

      @DianaGladney  ปีที่แล้ว

      I feel ya! I think you gotta make your list of what you need and what matters most to you. When you pause and do that it’ll reveal what makes the most sense to you. I always write out my list of non-negotiables and my intended use case. You also have to factor in what YOU like and want. I like and want APS-C but I don’t see APS-C being where they’ll give a ton of attention to moving forward. So, logic and good timing makes the E1 the ideal camera to go full frame and opens more creative options and more camera options across the line up for other creative needs. You just have to see what’s right for you.

  • @MadefromJava

    I’m on the other side of this, I’m a full frame user. In regards to the ZV-E1 overheating issue, I’ve used it for about 2 weeks mainly using 4k24 and had no problems. I used it to record my son’s high school graduation and also ran tests at home at 4k24 until it ran out of battery without overheating. For the most part I use an apsc lens(11mm f1.8) on my Zv-e1 to keep it compact, I don’t think there should be a rush to get new lenses if you were to go into the Zv-e1. Just my opinions from my experiences. Looking forward to see what you decide to do.

    • @DianaGladney
      @DianaGladney  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That's dope! The overheating grumblings doesn't bother me one bit honestly, which is why I grabbed one. I feel like most of this stuff online is unrealistic scenarios for the camera in general. I'd never sit in an 80+ degree room with zero airflow, so why would my camera? That's Whitney Houston lip sweat season and I'm not about that life lol I think some folks are doing it just for the views at this point.
      As far as lenses it's not a rush for real, I'm just a gear minimalist. What I actually use is super simple. I just won't have need or want them with the E1. The only lenses I ran with were the 10-18mm f4, Sony 35mm f1.8 which has been my favorite, the Sigma 16mm and then the 10-18mm f4 when traveling. The 11mm f1.8 is a gem of a lens. So good. I 100% get why you picked that one up. I already bought the E1, it'll be shipping shortly. The closer we get to the a6700 release, I'll probably grab one to cover and teach from on the channel.

    I ordered your book! Coming today. I’m a Sony apsc guy new to the game but I will definitely get this new 6700 camera. The quality of videos I got from my ZVE10 with some good lenses just can’t be beat value wise. Full frame is crazy expensive at this point in my development.

      I agree! It's one of the main reasons I love the ZV-E10! It's an amazing camera for the price.
      I believe there are plenty of creators in the same boat, which is why I'll keep covering the camera moving forward. It's just my use case is requiring something more robust for content I create out side the channel.
      Plus, the time it'll cut down in us using Sony Catalyst Browse and have more flexibility. It's definitely not a move for everyone but I always get asked what I'm using so when I make a switch, I keep the community updated.

    I've been hearing it's 50/50 whether it will have a fully articulating screen vs. just a flip-up which would piss a lot of people off. Unfortunately if you're a content creator that uses the hot/cold shoe for a shotgun mic, that's not going to work. For me, I just want a ZV-E10 with IBIS for under $1500. Any other things they add (like s-cinetone, 10-bit colors, etc.) would be just icing on the cake.

    • @DianaGladney
      @DianaGladney  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That would be interesting but I really do wonder what the E10 Mark 2 might have. I think like all the other brands, they're likely to have a camera body with only digital IS and the fact they made the E1 leads me to believe the E10 Mark 2 is that body that'll only have digital IS.
      As far as the screen orientation...Even the higher end cameras have the fully articulating screen, minus the A7R5 and A1 but would they pull that on the a6700...idk. It'd be an interesting choice but probably frustrate more folks than not. I'd bet on a fully articulating screen.

    • @timbrowntown
      @timbrowntown ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@DianaGladney you make a good point with the E10 Mark II. Most likely it won't be a significant upgrade over the original E10. Until they start putting mobile/ cellular phone technology into camera hardware, digital stabilization only is it going to cut it and we're going to need ibis for vlogging scenarios.

  • @DigiDriftZone

    What do you think of the Fuji X-S20? - a manufacturer that constantly updates their APS-C cams, 6.2k open gate (crop/reposition the same video for instagram and TH-cam), no overheating, 7 stops IBIS (2 more than Sony and it's a lot less jerky now!), 4k60 usb webcam (1 cable for power and external recording, with film simulations, cool!), raw video external recording, better screen, joystick and nicer ergonomics, fuji colours, some unique great lenses, many years of meaningful firmware updates (Sony are notorious for dropping support quickly). There's a lot to like!

    • @DianaGladney
      @DianaGladney  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think Fuji has done an awesome job across all their APS-C camera bodies, and you're right, there's a lot to like.
      However, it's just not for me personally. I'm not hunting for the best spec'd out camera and switching camera brands isn't something I'm likely to ever consider unless Sony just completely throws out the baby with the bathwater, as my southern friends would say lol
      I've tried Fuji, and they have an onslaught of awesome features and still less than stellar autofocus. Absolutely reliable autofocus is must and until they can hold focus when you turn your head sideways lol I'm not personally interested. They've definitely drastically improved, but not so much so that I'm looking to switch camera brands.
      I've found a home using Sony cameras and I love using them. Anytime I tried Fuji, I didn't have that same experience. Nice cameras, but they're not for me.
      I don't have expectations of a firmware update post purchase even though it'd be nice, but I didn't have that expectation when with Panasonic, Canon or now Sony. Sony definitely has some areas they need to improve on, IBIS being one of them, and better screens and EVFs. But the digital stabe of Dynamic Stabe in the E1 is perfect for me. Overheating isn't something I am running into on the ZV-E1 that impacts or limits my ability to create what I usually create.
      I have no intentions of switching away from Sony so Fuji can continue to drop bangers, and it'll be awesome for Fuji shooters, but I don't plan to become one of them.

    • @DigiDriftZone
      @DigiDriftZone ปีที่แล้ว

      @@DianaGladney Fuji can now hold focus when you turn sideways and even if you turn away completely from the camera where all it can see is the back of your head! - I've only has my X-S20 a day and it did lose me a couple of times briefly, but it's finally usable. With that said, you still can't tap on a random point in the screen and have the camera track that in video (only in photo), that's annoying and something I'm a jealous of on the Sony.
      With that said, even without the AF improvements, it is indeed a pain to switch, I still have 2 weeks to return my X-S20 and I am tempted by the A6700 as it has the exact same lenses I use and love on the Fuji (13mm Viltrox 1.4, Tamron 11-20mm F2.8, Sigma 18-50mm F2.8, etc), but I'd have to sell all my lenses and get E-mount versions, effort :)
      What I'm tempted by on the A6700 is no crop in 4k60 / FHD240p (why add a crop Fuji!), still superior video AF, catalyst (for some awesome post processing options), weather sealing (I don't film in the rain but got rained on several times and was scared for my Fuji), 4K120p (even with the huge crop), higher ISO range (better in low light?), the ISO for SLOG3 Is 800 instead of 1250 on the Fuji FLOG2 (less noisy video?), amazing in body fixes for lens breathing and other lens defects (can't find any info on in body fixed on the Fuji?), I'm also finding the exact same lenses are 20-30% cheaper in E-mount vs X-mount for some reason, so it should actually end up cheaper.
      I'm going to Croatia next week, will put the X-S20 through its paces, if it stacks up, will keep it, if not, will send it back and get the A6700 I think :) - I'm still not ready for full frame, I love the size/weight of APS-C plus 12MP isn't great for photos.

    • @DianaGladney
      @DianaGladney  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hopefully the Fuji works out for you on your trip!
      Yeah, I'm not willing to play that autofocus roulette with other brands lol I've done that before, and it's hell to see a camera drift and lose focus wondering if it'll hold or not. Different strokes for different folks when it comes to brand preference but nothing about Fuji tempts me to switch. I have zero issues with autofocus across any of my Sony cameras and even in the hardest situations where I thought it might lose someone, it never did. I have everything I need with Sony; the main specs on my list of non-negotiables are met, anything else is extra.
      Full frame doesn't hold anything "special" for me, it's not the holy grail of sensor sizes to me lol It just happens to have what I need and want in a camera without having to compromise on my desire for it to be small and lightweight with the ZV-E1 now. In the photos I've taken with the E1, I have zero complaints about the MP in the camera. The images are sharp and clear and render out great. Photography based features aren't anything I personally care about so from the small amount of photos I take in a years time, it's more than enough for me.
      Again, it's all a personal preference with cameras but once you find what you like and what works for you, stick with it. Hopefully, the Fuji is all you need and more because I certainly don't envy the prospect of the camera hunting game lol

      Lol Well, I can’t say that. I think APS-C is still awesome and still ideal for a ton of creators.
      For me though, it is the move though. I’ve watched Sony long before moving over in 2019 but it’s clear where their priority is and I just don’t want to sit in the “APS-C desert” any longer waiting for lenses from 3rd parties who thankfully cares about APS-C or the occasional release from Sony every 4 or so years lol I think after the a6700 drops between that, the ZV-E10 and FX30 there will be plenty of satisfied creators. Yeah, I mean, I WANT all the cool things or the latest and greatest, but I end up having to temper myself and really focus on features that will improve my work. So with that, looking at what the next step up from the ZV-E10 would be for me is having weather sealing, ability to shoot in heat (live in AZ and do a lot of outdoor work), low light performance (though the ZV-E10 actually is pretty dang good there), ability to shoot 4k24, 30, 60 without crop, and 10bit. Really interested in seeing what the 6700 offers, but thinking that further out rumored A7C II might be the one. If the FX30 had a bit less noise in low light I would have bought. A7IV is still probably the compromise I should be gravitating to. But overall, I do mostly video so the build and feature of the FX series...ughhhh...there is always a compromise unless you have all the monies!

      lol I totally get where you're coming from. The a6700 will likely an ideal camera for you then. I'm not sure about low light depending on what you're going for but it'll probably be great. The FX30 is pretty great in low light. Again, not sure what kind of work/content you're creating but the FX30 was really nice. Have you not thought about the A7c2?

    • @DianaGladney
      @DianaGladney  ปีที่แล้ว

      Great question! Sure I have, but there aren't any real rumors about it, just speculations. The a6700 is next on the release path, allegedly, and even if the A7C Mark 2 materializes later this year, it's still later this year to be announced and then eventually delivered with the "hope" of it being better or on par with what we're already seeing now. That's too many "ifs" for me.
      Whereas the E1 is actually here and even if the a6700 is as great as I imagine it might be, it'll be a long wait hoping for other complimentary APS-C cameras to fully stick with APS-C only moving forward. The A7C is great, but not my cup of tea, and I'm not so sure the Mark 2 will be either. Whereas now having the E1 for a month nonstop, the E1 was the right choice for me.

  • @lvc394
    @lvc394 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I think I want to wait on the 6700 before I pick a new camera. You don't seem to need Full Frame unless you are in very low light shooting. I also like that I bought the Sony 55-210mm lens just to play with a long telephoto lens and it is more like 75-350 full frame, and it did a great job on the video shoot. If I was going to go full frame I would not cheap out and get the E1 ( ok ok $2200 is not cheap). The E1 to me is the ZV-1F of full frame, it just cost too much not to have an EVF or IBIS and so it should have sold for no more than $1600. Here is the real deal, The E10 was the greatest bang for the buck when it came out at $700-800. Does the E1 have the same bang for the buck at $2200? I think not.

    • @DianaGladney
      @DianaGladney  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Definitely not going full frame for anything around low light, as shared in the video. lol The E1 definitely isn't on the ZV-1F level. Online "reviews" from folks that are just looking to bandwagon some quick views is nothing compared to using the camera in real life (plenty of content coming about that) but the same was said of the A74, A7C, and the ZV-E10 when they first came out. Now those same folks own and rave about the camera. Anytime a new camera comes out the first 30 days are usually full of b.s. videos for views mixed in with reality use case videos.
      I don't buy anything solely off online reviews, I've been creating long enough with a host of cameras to know better, lol Depending on what you need, there are plenty of cameras out there to choose from. The E1 just almost perfectly fits my needs inside and outside the channel. But for what the E1 does, it's a great price. Would I be mad if it was cheaper, definitely not lol but for what it does, it's awesome.

    I’d upgrade to Fullframe if the lenses werent so heavy. Bodys are like almost the same size and weight (a7c, E1), but lenses are a whole different story.
    We can take advantage of better bokeh and low light performance, and go with smaller aperture lenses instead, but still heavy.
    My current apsc lineup is sigma 16mm 1.4, 30mm 1.4, Sony 18-105. and I shoot 98 percent of my photos of with the Sigma.
    those are 405g, 265g, 427g = 1,096g
    possible replacements:
    samyang 24 1.8 230g, sony zeiss 55 1.8 281g, sony 24-105 663g = 1,174g
    -> welp, doing the math made me realize, there isn’t that much of a difference. damn
    gotta rethink stuff haha.
    I’m missing some reach with full frame here. also since I never found myself using the 16mm much, I could replace it with something like a 24mm 2.8 for full frame which is even lighter

    • @DDHDTV
      @DDHDTV ปีที่แล้ว +1

      i’m still on an a6000 and tbh, an a6400 would have all i need. better AF, better body, better color science. other than that, I’m happy with my 6 year old a6000.
      it just feels so swrong to upgrade to an 4 year old camera, especially since its used value is almost like new over here (700-800€)

    • @DianaGladney
      @DianaGladney  ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree on the camera body weight. There is some give and take there where I think moving forward, we'll see more cameras with fans than without for more serious video work which is one reason the E1 is so attractive to me. Even for as light as the A74 is compared to other cameras, it still was too heavy for me to want to carry around all the time.
      Lenses are a different story.
      I think we're beyond the days of the sensor dictating the size of the lens only. Better optics, better motors, and better performance means the lenses had to take a step-up, and they still have some weight to them, just not the same as before. As your calculations showed, it's not really that big of a difference anymore, even for Micro 4/3rds lenses in some cases. You gotta step out of the bubble of TH-cam and go look through the lens line-ups of what's actually on the market, and you'll actually spot a lot of gems in all sizes and price ranges.
      The only gap I've found surprisingly is the "vlogging" type lenses. Where APS-C has more options, the full frame option takes a different approach. You'll see wide lower aperture lenses but higher quality glass usually for events and real estate vs casual or personal use case styled lenses. I've seen more updates and additions in the last two years though. So, I feel where you're coming from. I've watched the market for a long time and the E1 is not the first reason I'm moving over, but rather the final nail in the coffin so to speak for my primary cameras being full frame moving forward. It's a lot to consider.
      If you've been perfectly happy with what you have, make your own list of what really matters to use, what are things that your next camera absolutely needs to have to last you, and pick from that vs how old the camera is or what people online say. If you know it'll be perfect for you, get what is best for you and how you create. So, if that's the a6400 for you, go for it. If it's something else, go for it. Just make sure it's right for you.

  • @dericsanchez4081
    @dericsanchez4081 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I understand your points but if the 6700 does everything you would want/need, what would it matter if full frame comes out with new cameras more frequently? You’d already have all you need.

    • @DianaGladney
      @DianaGladney  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Because the honest answer is it won't. It'll always be a compromise of some level and it this point just ins't worth it any longer for me. It's not just a matter of new cameras but pushing the needle forward. Cameras today are vastly different than even 2-3 years ago, let alone longer. APS-C hasn't seen those advantages until the FX30, and that's one camera among many. It's a universal issue with any of these brands so it's just time to move to full frame for me personally.

    As a side note: I would PAY Sony for updates for the ZV-E10 to get features that are on the ZV-1M2. If we want our camera to be kept up to date we can't expect Sony not to make a buck on it. That is why they make new cameras to make more money instead of making free updates for the old stuff. Software development cost money. A new menu system would be nice on the E10.

    • @DianaGladney
      @DianaGladney  ปีที่แล้ว

      I hear you on that but even though the 6k downsampled to 4k on the sensor the E10 and a6x00 series cameras, they've put a lot into their new cameras and the E10 was the start of a lot of that on a cheaper level. I don't think it's going to get any better than what the E10 has already done. A newer camera will hopefully mean better 4k performance, better battery life performance if they keep using the FW50 on that line, maybe a little higher bit rate performance, and the new mic system built in with the stuff you see in the ZV-1 Mark 2. I think, unfortunately, any E10 Mark 2 is going to be similar to update the ZV-1 had, nothing major but a software update in the same body with a new sensor. So, maybe it's more of an update vs upgrade. My hope is the a6700 is really well executed because the only hope after that if it's not is the A7C Mark 2 and then an A75, but I think it's a little early for that update.
      All of this is speculation and what I've seen in their past behavior but I'd love to be proven wrong and things far better than the base expectation, which Sony has done well in the past but we shall see. But I'm good on playing the waiting game lol I've been patient and the E1 is nearly there. I'm just curious what the a6700 and A7C Mark 2 will be.

    • @DianaGladney
      @DianaGladney  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I think it's more preference than anything else. You're not limited in quality based on the sensor size of the camera.
      For me, my decision is more so based on the upgrade path vs the cameras being unable to produce good quality video because that's definitely not the case. In the right hands, its hard to tell the difference between the two. Lighting, audio quality, and lenses can make a huge difference vs just switching cameras.

    I'm feeling aps-c for sony is just sony's way of getting you into the system and to upgrade to full frame. 3 sony prime aps-c lenses in the last 9 years. Where's the small and light lenses to match the small and light body, most 3rd parties are making big and fast lenses, not small and light so I am a bit stuck.
    I am eyeing up nikon's new 24mm f1.7 and fuji have a sweet and compact 28mm f2.8, sony small and light lenses for aps-c I am struggling to match to the competition. I am feeling go fuji for aps-c or sony for full frame, but will wait and see if there's new lenses announced with the a6700 that can keep me in the sony aps-c system.

      I can definitely feel the frustration there but if you can, rent the cameras you have in mind and see where you feel most at home. I love Sony but I get it’s not ideal for everyone.
      It’s a big difference trying a camera in person and seeing how it actually performs in real life for you vs how amazing everything looks online not sure what’s been edited out or what matches your intended use case. I’ve tried a lot of cameras I never shown on the channel because in one area or another it missed the mark on basic stuff but I don’t try to bash cameras if they knowingly won’t fit my use case or the audience. So, while you’re definitely justified in your frustration with Sony try what you think you’ll like best and see how it suits you first.
      I watched Sony long before I switched in 2019 and I wish APS-C was as developed as the full frame line like Fuji does but I guess that’s the issue too. Full Frame eventually becomes the upgrade path. It just depends on your use case. You’ll find what’s right for you.

    You TH-camrs need to relax. There is a time I quit watching some as they are making really crazy videos. APS-C is loved by many, even by those who own cameras by other manufacturers. Lug around the A7R3 with a 24-105 zoom and you will feel the weight. Not nice. Pick up the a6600 with a Sigma zoom (18-50) and you are in Heaven. I own both but take the aps-c cameras on my outings. They are very capable of taking great pictures and making great videos. You need to be in control. And if you can't take a picture with an aps-c camera, then get out of the business.
