The soundtracks in this game are sick and so is the game. One of the best old schools. The Lights Out and Fumbling in the Dark soundtrack, that is a whole next level of creepy/uncanny vibes. That song would scare you from going down in the basement at night as a child, triggers your imagination like crazy.
Good ole crash. I never beat it and never came close to 100%-ing it, and perhaps that's why I found this playthrough to be so entertaining. Thanks for sharing!

The later games really never have the overwhelming lonely feeling of this one. There's no Coco, the rideable animals are just normal feral critters, and your only ally is Aku Aku... who here, is just a separate witch doctor's mask rather than the leader-type figure he is later. You're just alone, traveling through strange quiet ruins and other just weirdly unsettling places. It's certainly a unique feeling, that not even the remake could capture. ...I really wish this one had a better save system, it'd be perfect if not for that....
Another thing I feel is lost in the later games is the sense of progression across the worlds. The first islands levels are lush jungles filled with natives and wildlife, the second island is pretty much abandoned with ruins of ancient cities and dark temples littering the island then by the third island, everything's become entirely industrial with most of the enemies now being robotic and the bright green jungles of the first two islands being nonexistent. It's all punctuated by the castle being visible in the background of the side-scrolling stages, looming closer the further you progress in the game. The warp room is undoubtedly a more convenient way to select the levels, but the levels lose that sort of storytelling as a result because now they feel like they exist in a void with no connection to each other.
@@vontavius01Related to that, if not for the concept art in Crash Team Racing, it wouldn't be clear that 2's first four Warp Rooms correspond to the islands in the first game (splitting the third island between Cortex Power and Cortex Castle)...
Congrats! It's definetely the hardest "Crash" game. Shame to confess, but I was never able to pass it on my own, maybe one time with friends, after maaany days of trying. To compare, I can pass all Crash Bandicoot III with my eyes closed :P

I think that may come from the demo disks before it was fully developed, they always make slight changes. Unless, of course alternate dimensions like the dude above me just alluded to.
I believe it’s the atmosphere. The other two games felt more welcoming and wondrous. This game felt like you were on a journey through lands that you don’t belong in. That vibe only got stronger as you travel farther and farther. The entire 3rd island felt like trudging through hell itself.
I never ever owned a PlayStation and neither Crash Bandicoot ever since I was 6 because I only had a Nintendo 64, 18 years later I have finally played it and beat it. I was blown away how great it is and this is the first time playing it 😊😊😊

after watching the making of this game, i just love watching the gameplay. the developers figured out how to maximize every ounce of potential of the playstation and paved the way for 3D gaming on the system.

Ivan Caroselli If i can understand the details right, there's specific levels that require you to visit another level and get the corresponding colour gem and return to the previous level to ride on the gem path to grab the boxes that way around.

There's a before Crash Bandicoot and then there's an after. Nothing will ever come close to how great this game was. So many memories as a kid, literally spent months playing this with my cousins when I was 4!!!
