I've been playing this game since 1996. I completed it 100% for the first time in 1998 when I was 14 and many times since. I think out of all the Crash games, this is the one with the fewest flaws. While Crash 2, 3 and 4 are better in some aspects, they also have more flaws, like bring too easy (3) or too hard (4). In Crash 1, the difficulty is just perfect. Getting the gems can be really challenging, but there are no super long levels or painfully frustrating parts like in Crash 4. So yeah, I'd say it's a pretty good game.

I agree. Crash 1 really had something very special about it because it was one of the first 3D action platformers and Naughty Dog put a lot of effort into it since they were treading on new ground with their own technology
It's also how I feel about Tomb Raider 1; a very good debut that the sequels failed to match in terms of pacing and atmosphere but improved greatly on the gameplay and narrative

Crash 1 has a certain atmosphere that the sequels lack. The way level progression works makes you feel like you’re on a journey to save Tawna which is helped further by Cortex’s castle getting closer and closer in certain levels.

I'd personally say it's harder in the longer levels, and especially hard if you're going for the gems. But yeah, all in all it's got to be the hardest to just pick up and play of the original trilogy. Still a big fan, though. 😊

@@PCEngineLives It’s flooded with extra lives just like every crash game is. I get 99 extra lives every time I play. I don’t see why Crash has this ora of difficulty. It’s legit one of the easier platformers from the 90s. Although I love it and it’s my favorite.

    • @PCEngineLives
      @PCEngineLives 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

@@LV09XGAMES If you get in the groove of it, yeah it can get pretty easy. I did have to warm up to it a lot more than other platformers I played as a kid, though. I'd say that the main thing that makes it difficult has nothing to do with how many lives you have, it's more the lack of movement options the series started with. You have a somewhat heavy jump, and a spin attack, and that's it. It's a game you have to develop a patience with, since there's much more of a focus on getting past timing-based obstacles at the right window than the later games. It's a big reason why I wasn't fond of them adding time relics in the N. Sane Trilogy version. You can't just push your way through like you can in some of the later games. I think all three games are very smartly designed, but the first one just has this unique flavor to it that separates it from the other two.

Good video! Crash 1 is still a good game, yes! Naughty Dog were kind of pioneers as this game came out when 3D platformers were still in their infancy, so I respect them having to figure out a lot of things that had not been established yet. Granted, Crash 1 is still overshadowed by Crash 2 and 3, it is still a lot of fun even today! It definitely was a showpiece for the PS1 and made Crash Sony's mascot for awhile.
There is a patch currently for Crash 1 (PS1 original) that removes the no-death limit that makes the vanilla game so incredibly difficult to 100%. I highly recommend it if you want a more casual experience or are new to Crash games.

Definitely agree that Stormy Ascent should have been kept in. It's difficult but very fun and fair, and not nearly as difficult as many of the 8-bit and 16-bit games that were a recent memory in 1996. I think it would have been one of the most enjoyed levels in the game, not difficult in a way that would give it a bad reputation like some other Crash levels.

One thing I’ve always said about Crash 1 is that it is arguably the purest platforming gameplay experience in a 3D space that has ever been made, even to this day. Even compared to its immediate sequels, which were far more devoted to true platforming than most of their contemporaries in the genre, the first game really just boils its whole experience down to deliberately paced, hop-and-bop, precision platforming. It’s all about timing and precision; no gimmicks or significant switch-ups to dilute the experience. Even the two endless runner-type stages with the warthog are still built entirely around those same basic fundamentals of reflexivity, precision, and timing. Crash himself has such a limited moveset in the first game - only running, jumping, and spinning - that every single level had to be perfectly designed around that limited range of abilities, and what you get as a result of that challenge being met by some very talented developers, is a 3D platformer that stays truer to the fundamentals of the genre than pretty much any other 3D platformer I can think of. It isn’t the _best_ 3D platformer by any means - it’s not even the best Crash Bandicoot game imo - but its value is timeless and undeniable when you stop for a moment and consider its purity. That’s why Crash 1 still slaps.

I got the original Crash Bandicoot song as my ringtone because I thought the iPhone ringtones give off a little CB vibe. One thing I do like more over the N sane trilogy is the soundtrack. While good, some tracks just don’t have what the originals did. Great video WumpaLewis!! I played so much of Crash 1 as a kid... it brings back so many childhood memories going across the various islands, having that intense, awesome and, at times, creepy music throughout the levels as you progressed (I especially loved the music from the later levels).. Also I love how Lewis referenced his face in his thumbnails in this video. That was a nice touch! Great vid because of it! I'm staying subbed! 😆😂 No, but for real, Crash 1 is a great game with some excellent levels, excellent level design, great music, great challenge, outdated save system (with the bonus rounds), and just, overall, a lot of fun to complete. The same goes for N. Sane Trilogy. Though, I still like coming back to the original games for that nostalgia and just original experience, tbh. You know what I mean?? Also, I think in N. Sane, they made some of those relic times so insanely difficult because they were later levels in the game, perhaps? (I'm thinking of The Lab, specifically) and they wanted to ramp up the difficulty, though, I do really think some of the levels needed more testing with the relic times to make sure they were do-able, could be completed, and felt fair when completing them.
P.S./SIDE NOTE: Oh, and yes, I do agree, once you play Stormy Ascent a lot and get the hang of each particular section of the level, it really isn't as bad as it seems or people make it out to be (minus the plat. relic -- which is almost guaranteed to take you plenty of attempts). I do think it should have been in the original game, perhaps unlocked with another Cortex Bonus Round key or something? That would, of course, mean another Cortex Bonus Round would have to exist in another level that doesn't already have one and then the key earned from that would unlock Stormy Ascent as a fully playable level within the original game. And, yes, I think Stormy Ascent should have an N. Brio Bonus like they did in N. Sane Trilogy since the bonus in that level was unfinished in the original game and couldn't be accessed. Great vid.

As someone who recently finished Crash Bandicoot 1 on Xbox Game Pass, the game is still great to this day. I’ve never 100% completed Crash 1 back in the day when I had the game for PS1. The reason is that either my PS1 couldn’t read the CD or maybe the disc was dirty. I really recommended playing Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy for those who’s new into the Crash Bandicoot series. My thoughts on Crash 1 is really an introduction to the series. The game does has a great 3D polygon models in it which it really showcase what the PS1 could do in terms of graphics and gameplay. This is one of those franchises that Sony needed a mascot to compete with Nintendo’s Mario and Sega’s Sonic The Hedgehog. As far as Stormy Accent, I thought the level was great. It can be challenging as times, but if you know the cycles and patterns of this level, you be able to make it through it. If I’m going to rate Crash Bandicoot 1, I’ll rate it a 9/10. Overall, the game is great and it’s very satisfying to 100% complete it.

I will say this game has the best atmosphere out of all the games,I like the dark gothic German expressive Frankenstein asthetic of Cortex castle to the abandoned and eerie lab levels to the exptic gritty Indiana jones jungles they went with.
Only other game that matches this game’s tone in atmosphere is Crash of the titans and mind over mutant.
Wish newer Crash games went back to giving us atmospheric levels that felt lived in.

Got the same experience as you Lewis, the first Crash game I played was Mind over Mutant (amazing start💀), yet watched gameplay from the original trilogy online. Then couple years ago finally got to play the OG on an emulator and man, they feel so good. The proper Crash games, hopefully Crash 5 will be somewhat similiar to the first game.

FACT: There was another level that was completely cut from the game entirely, it was a level where game has the player inside a cave with lava, maybe a volcano. The reason it was cut from the game during development is because the developers knew that since lava was orange, so was Crash, the point was Crash himself would have been difficult to spot during gameplay with the lava surrounding him.

After playing the first 2, not growing up with it, crash 1 is my favorite. The level design was challenging but fair, crash even though he felt heavy felt consistent, i ended up having a miserable time with crash 2 because of how twitchy crash felt in comparison to 1. Still need to do crash 3, but other than going for 100% i had the most fun with crash 1

It would of been cool if N Sane trilogy also added in other deleted/unfinshed levels since there are plenty in the original. Like how the original upstream was you actually going upstream and ending where the boss arena is. Or the underground gem mine level that was to complex for original PS1 hardware.

I just love the original Crash Bandicoot on the PS1, just the simplicity of it, and it feels like it is 90% of the cases your fault that you died, feels rewarding when you are good at this game (this counts for ps1 and NST relics)
    PS:Japanese PS1 Crash 1, Papu has 5 hits

Hot take: N-sane absolutely destroyed the mood with the updated graphics. It looks nice, but the color palette feels off. Original Crash trilogy had pretty defined graphics with lots of darker colors and contrast. All the N-sane colors feel a bit washed out in comparission. Generator Room is a prime example of that (or that I could play through every "dark, light gimmick" level in N-sane without ever needing to pick up the light source.

I have a quilty confession: I played Crash 1 (N-Sane version), and I wasn't very good. I did it in under a month on and off, but I was so bad at most levels that I just gave up and made my younger brother (who is a more experienced gamer) complete them for me. I did do many of them on my own, and at the very least I persisted enough to beat the final Cortex by myself. I just don't know if the frustration of Uka Uka saying game over to me 100+ times was worth it.
That being said, Crash 1 is indeed a good game, albiet a hard one. I admire the simplicity and the creative level design, and the controls are basic but easy to grasp. The story is about as simple as you get, but I liked having Tawna as a focal point in the story since after this the franchise mostly tossed her aside and tried to replace her with a different character whose only resemblence was in name only.

The only valid complaint I can see about N.Sane Crash 1 is the change in the character geometry. There are times Crash might be standing on the ledge of something, after landing a jump, and just slip off, because the character model has a rounded shape. It's what makes using the rope shortcut on the bridge levels so hard.
Other than that its really a subjective matter. Saying the original game has a "vibe" that the new game doesn't? To me this "darker" tone seems to come down to lighting. The original game was just darker. Plus some of the reworked level themes are a bit brighter due to a fuller instrumental sound. But to me these are really negligible differences.
Meanwhile, there are valid issues with Crash 1 including being unable to see how many boxes you have when hovering over the level on the overworld. Also no saves unless you complete Tawna levels, key levels, or get a clear gem (which involves doing a perfect box run). It's inconvenient. I understand the game should have an element of challenge but when the challenge is inconvenience then it's bad design.
That being said, I don't think Crash 1 is a bad game. But it's definitely a product of its time. I credit it massively for being the inception of the entire franchise, but for me, I will always prefer the N.Sane version. I'm also a huge fan of time trials so despite the added difficulty, I spent many hours devoted to mastering level cycles and getting the platinum relics.

I will admit that, because it's the first in the series, the original Crash Bandicoot hasn't aged so well when compared to its direct sequels. I also prefer the Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy version of the first game because it's a solid modernization of the game. I loved what they had done with the remake.
But OG Crash 1 is still one of my favourite Crash games; I have lots of nostalgia for it, I played it many times as a kid, as a teen and as a young adult and to this day I have nothing but love and respect for it. I also think that, while the comparison with Crash 2 and 3 that improved everything makes Crash 1 look like an old and inferior game in pretty much every aspect of the gameplay, Crash 1 still holds up nicely when we keep in mind that it came in 1996 and we compare it to a bunch of games available around the same year. A few of those games aged quite worse than Crash 1, maybe because they were aiming for something more complex and ambitious while the technology wasn't there yet and Crash 1 stood on more solid grounds due to its simpler game design, or maybe because Naughty Dog knew a few tricks more than most developers working on PS1 games and managed to make their game look so good and get away with some limitations

The only bad thing in Crash 1 is the lack of quality of life improvements like being able to save whenever you want and to be able to retry the Brio and Cortex bonus stages. On the other hand, it can still be a fun challenge to do but for newer players it's pretty brutal. Anyway, really fun and great game!

Something I do find disappointing about the N. Sane Trilogy for Crash 1 is that a lot of the music lost its eerie tone from the original. Levels such as Slippery Climb, Toxic Waste, Generator Room, and more used to sound creepy/eerie, which gave it a better vibe & atmosphere while playing the level. In the N. Sane Trilogy, it does not sound eerie at all.

I think Crash 1 is a good game. I vaguely remember playing it in kindergarten. I would truly experience it in 10th grade. I played it to death. The atmosphere of the game was the best in this one. I hate relic runs as I am a got to be the best, so I only accept platinum.
