2. Lean on me: This song was performed in front of Michael Bolton. After the performance, Michael Bolton said. Sohyang is on the level of a master. Sohyang said her wish is to do a duet with Michael Bolton here. Later, Michael Bolton invited Sohyang to his concert and performed a duet together. If you look at the video, you'll be able to see the incredible improvisation of Sohyang in the duet.

A couple of comments: We all get caught up in her crazy mixed belts but after listening to her for a while now the thing I always come back to regarding her voice is how clear it is in every register and dynamic and that's also one of the first things you mentioned here. Hearing other very accomplished singers singing the same songs leaves you with the impression that they are singing through a wet blanket in comparison. It's not everyone's cup of tea but it is definitely unique in this regard.
The other thing I really appreciated was your observation about how this performance showed her ability to draw her audience in. That for me is another thing that I love about her, she is always conscious that she's telling a story that we are all experiencing together. She has a diva's technical ability but uses those skills in service to the emotional connection she's trying to make rather than as a way to impress us and that is a throughline in every performance you will see from her and I hope you do more from her catalog!

Who cares about being marketable in America? Considering what is these days, it’s no loss. Lots of people have thriving legendary careers internationally, such as Shirley Bassey who has sold almost 200,000,000 copies of albums. But you stay in your American bubble thinking that that’s the only country that matters.

Skylar, welcome to the thrilling world of Sohyang. My fellow fans in their comments below have done us proud in describing what this elegant lady is all about. She will never disappoint you. Even when sitting alone in a chair, just singing, she can touch your heart. Then of course, she can blow the roof off of the building. I personally like the performances where she does both. =)
I won't make a recommendation for the next song to react to except that her most spectacular performances are in the "Legends" series shows and the "Immortals" series shows. Mind-blowing greatness.
Oh, and her pitch is always flawless. If she slides into a note with a Blues or a Gospel sound, it is always intentional. Watch for that, AND watch for Sohyang's smile. It is breathtaking.

I've posted this biography on collabstreet before when other members did reactions to So Hyang, so I don't know if you have already seen it. Only one to find out though, so here it comes again!

We all wonder if So Hyang is human or from another planet. Current odds are that she’s from another planet, with an outside chance she’s actually an angel come down from Heaven. We have never heard anyone sing like her, or be able to hold an audience in the palm of her hand until she lets them go. Her voice is, as one person described it, like liquid gold. Perfection in clarity and pitch, and she doesn’t fade in the upper octaves, which is startling when you hear her hit those 5th and 6th octave notes with such POWER it actually gives everyone goose bumps--and makes bald guys’ hair stand on end! As she says, her voice “is from God.” She does all the musical arrangements herself (with the input of her musical assistants), teaches vocal technique at a South Korean university and speaks four languages. Korean, English, French and Vietnamese.
Let me catch my breath. OK.
She is a cancer survivor from uterine cancer at the age of 20, just after getting married, and states very plainly that God saved her life due to the prayers of her church. But this left her without the ability to have children so she decided to dedicate her life to being a Contemporary Christian Gospel singer and has refused recording contracts from the biggest corporations in the world. She only wants to sing for charities, churches and while doing missionary work, to strengthen those suffering through difficult times. David Foster, Josh Groban, Michael Bolton and others have all travelled to Asia to work with her.
She contracted hepatitis B from a blood transfusion during her cancer surgery and it clings to her to this day. Because of this she is prone to catching pneumonia but has sang perfectly while suffering from it in her live performance of “You Raise Me Up” before Shane Filan of Westlife on South Korean TV: th-cam.com/video/te_L9ofhUt8/w-d-xo.html She has asked those who love her singing to pray that God keep pneumonia away from her, she has suffered from it on so many occasions. Imagine how she must feel with this coronavirus floating around everywhere!
She just turned 42 on April 5, 2020, though in Korean culture she would be 43 because you are deemed to be one year old when you are born. She was about 37 when she sang this version of “Arirang Alone”, their unofficial national anthem based on a 600 year old folk song expressing their desire to reunify north and south: vimeo.com/308253527
After being sick with pneumonia eight times from 2016 through to 2020, and considering giving up singing altogether, she decided to enter a televised singing contest called “King of the Masked Singers” in 2017 and won six consecutive times, which has catapulted her into international fame from the performances being posted on TH-cam.
Whitney Houston’s former manager saw her on TH-cam and showed her to Oprah Winfrey, who brought her to David Foster’s attention. Foster then contacted So Hyang and went to Japan in order to perform eight concerts together at Tokyo’s famous Blue Note Club in late-2018.

She could be an international Super Star if she wanted to be but has decided that it would ruin her spiritually, quoting Proverbs 14:12 “There is a way that seems right to a man, But its end is the way of death.”
In a South Korean television interview So Hyang conceded that she struggled with her desire for fame for a number of years, going into the basement in her home numerous times and closing the door so she could complain vehemently to God that He was holding her back from becoming famous due to her health problems and other unforeseeable events. Then she later saw a Korean TV drama where the talented daughter of a very successful businessman was positive she would take over when her father retired. But he left the management of the company to a woman she hated, so she had a fit and lay kicking and screaming on the floor. What can one say about such a person? She is a literal Wonder Woman! And we need about a billion more just like her!

“Debuting in [the] US was my utmost goal for the past 20 years. But when I got a call from the US agency, I politely rejected, as I realized that what I wanted most was not becoming famous,” she said.
“I think singers are very susceptible to arrogance, especially when they hear the screaming from crowds on stage. It can make you feel like as if you’ve become God.”
“And I’m perfectly okay with sharing my music via TH-cam, which can reach tens of millions of people all over the world without making me feel stuck up. Maybe that’s why I was born in this era.”
So Hyang is just the most amazing singer, Christian and human being. She is beautiful both inside and out, and so humble, with a stage charisma and smile that is off the charts.
In Korean dictionaries 소향 (So Hyang) has several meanings.
• First is a type of Korean traditional music.
• Second is to burn incense on a burner.
• Third is to go toward.
But these meanings are rarely used today. 소향 is also the name of a heroine in a Korean traditional novel. So her name was well chosen, and you can take your pick!

Well, one more gush. In an interview with a Turkish music producer So Hyang revealed that she can hit Eb7 and D7 in practise. However, she never goes above the 6th octave in performances. Oh, I just remembered, she is also a published novelist and theological treatist, and a very good stage actress, which she proved by playing Julie Andrews’ part in the South Korean production of “The Sound of Music.” Moreover, she sang the “Moana” part in the Korean version of the Disney film, does the musical vocals for many South Korean television dramas, and is a talented artist and cartoonist.
She can also play the piano and guitar. Is there anything this genius level woman can’t do?
I really must also compliment the choir, orchestra and audio/video production people So Hyang uses. They are all top notch from what I can see and hear. The Korean people are easily as talented as anyone else.
So Hyang simply transcends the thresholds of music. And takes you there with her. An experience like no other. I don’t know what else to say. I’ve spent entire days listening to her.

Even when the PHENOMENAL, GIFTED So Hyang is singing in Korean, understanding the lyrics is not necessary. She is BRILLIANT at conveying the meaning/message of the song.

So Hyang is well known for her vocal mastery but often her demeanour & the soul in her voice makes me feel like I’m simply here to listen to someone with a story to tell. There’s a certain maturity in her music- from the songs she chooses to sing, to her choice of arrangement, and the way she delivers it. And that’s probably what I love the most about her.
Her “If I ain’t got you” (originally by Alicia Keys) made me feel those exact same feelings deeply and was my fav performance of her from 2020. Pretty sure you guys will like it too.

Nice to see that you decided to step into the Sohyang realm and experience the magic yourself. No amount of words can properly describe the feeling you get when listening to her yourself. Her voice brings more than technical excellence or melodic rhythm, but also a deep conviction of her belief and soul-shaking impact. This "I Have Nothing" is a stunning illustration of Sohyang's vocal prowess and artistic interpretation, but it is hardly representative of the kind of amazement her voice can deliver. Glad to see you enjoyed that but believe me, that isn't her most impressive performance. She does her own arrangements & sometimes she'll change a song quite a bit & other times,like today she wont change it too much,just enough to make it her version rather than trying to copy Whitney, but there are many many more performances that blow this outta the water on a vocal level, although I appreciate that is just my own personal & i'm not speaking on behalf of anyone else. BTW you called her kim as her full name is kim so hyang but the 'kim' part is actually her surname so she is just known as sohyang & referred to that way. I know this because in the early days of discovering sohyang I made exactly the same mistake & was told by a korean person,there maybe thousands,millions of us even,that can claim to be members of that particular club!

My mind is expecting her do something in a certain way and she does something completely different. It's nice to see a performance for the first time and be surprised by all the nuance. I'm confused. The reactor keeps referring to her "falsetto". I always thought that was at term used by singers (usually male) to sing above their natural range. Since So Hyang is a soprano those so-called falsetto notes are in natural range.
