Sohyangs performance of this song transcends Whitney's on three levels. Emotionally...Sohyang makes me feel like my heart just got ripped out. In comparison, Whitney gives me the "oh darn it" vibe. Sohyang's trained technical ability is just beyond what Whitney was capable of. Sohyangs natural gifts, her god-given talent of purity of tones, perhaps only ever approached by Ella Fitzgerald. Sohyang's version is a kick in the teeth. Whitney's is more a Disney romance, and i love Whitney. This is something beyond what Whitney was capable of and its was written and produced to embrace her talents. Musical genius keeps evolving...are we not lucky.
Welcome back to pay Sohyang a visit. Honestly, the biggest thrill of watching Sohyang's performances is to enjoy how those unaware of her become awestruck from learning about her. However, this stunning stage of I Have Nothing, not only converts those uninitiated into believers, also delivers the shock value to those who already know about Sohyang's vocal prowess. The funny thing is, her singing and that extra high key would have been impressive enough already… But she had to add those over the top, explosive a high notes to the higher key… Because I was Nina said she was just living in the moment. And her technique is so locked in that she can just get away with it and be casual with it.

For future videos Sohyang's performance of Everyone (sung in Korean and English) is pretty incredible. Quite a journey and a feat of endurance in this one. So hard. My favorite of hers (or anyone). Her You Raise Me Up performance (from Immortal Songs 2) is also great. Expertly made massive changes totally breathing new life into the song. The results can be astonishing when she makes changes well suited to her ability. By far my favorite rendition. Where Are You and Fate (both sung in Korean) are spectacular performances with a completely different emotional feel than what you've seen from her so far. I think these were on MBC potentially making them tougher to do from a reaction standpoint. Incredible as it is this performance wouldn't make my top 5 from her. I like some of her performances of songs that are new to me or those that aren't new to me but she has completely reworked more. I like your coverage of all the production aspects (arrangement, instrumental choices, backing singers, etc.) in your videos. Most who do these don't give these areas as much attention, so it is refreshing to see.

So pleased that you reacted to the "professional broadcast" version of this, rather than the audience bootleg that a lot of people used. In this one, you really get a better sense of the whole production and her mannerisms. (Though I suppose that the bootleg is useful in demonstrating that this was, in fact, a "real" performance - as opposed to cobbled together using studio "tricks" - and that she really is that amazing.)

Hi Nina. I don't think you have reacted to Sohyang's 'Everyone'. It's amazing. And the past year, she has been on the TV series Begin Again Korea. These are simple performances, mostly outdoors with small, socially distanced audiences. Very different the big stage performances we are used to from Sohyang. But wonderful. From this show check out Love Poem, Please, I Will Always Love You, Misty, Stay, or even hip hop Sohyang with Day Day. Begin Again Korea made a huge contribution to the body of quality Sohyang recordings that we have online. Often overlooked are her performances on King of Masked Singers, mostly because she wears a mask people like to see her while she sings. But ALL the King of Masked Singer performances are awesome. She surprised them all in the beginning with Atlantas Princess and Dear Love. Home is a favorite of mine, as is rock star Sohyang singing Mona Lisa. I look forward to whatever you choose.
As a total contrast to this big production of ‘I have nothing’ I recommend you take a look at her performance of another whitney song (act. Dolly Parton’s song), ‘I will always love you’ from the ‘begin again Korea’ series. Without spoiling it for you this is a more stripped back offering & the lack of instrumentation (piano only) really shows off her vocals. She had many performances in the ‘begin again’ series, all of which were recorded during the pandemic so this is bang up to date Sohyang. The idea of the show is that a small ensemble of musicians/singers go out in to work places & public spaces & put on mini gigs of a more acoustic nature to help keep up the spirits of the people ( they were basically busking). You will see performing on her own, as a duet & as part of the whole group in different places on different days & this is as ‘live’ as you can get. ‘I will always love you was the 1st performance of sohyang’s to be released & she appears to be in a pretty good place with regards to her health & oh boy! does it show, not only does she look amazing but she sounds better than ever in this format. Throughout the ‘begin again Korea’ series she tackles many genre’s. She does the big ballads, rock,pop, blues/jazz( Ella Fitzgerald’s ‘Misty’ is amazing), obv the gospel & wait til you hear her rapping ( in a song called ‘day day’. Even though she was the token elder among younger Korean pop stars, Sohyang did the bulk of the rap because in rehearsals she was the only one with the breath control to spit those lines out fast,one after the other & although the others got better after practising, Sohyang did it straight away!!) throughout this series you will see many instances of not only the audience been shocked or brought to tears by her performances but her fellow performers can be see with mouths open in awe of her. Search for’ Sohyang begin again’ & all her performances will appear, some well known English language songs & some in Korean but my fav 3 are ‘I will always love you’, ‘Misty’ & ‘I won’t give up’ by Jason Mars ( OMG!! Kleenex alert!). Also during the pandemic she released a rarity, a music video of ‘never enough’, which the whole world & his dog seem to be singing these days. I know you prefer the live performance but I recommend you watch this music video,after all, you know that she can sing this song live if she wanted to, she can sing anything, but apart from the impeccable vocals I think you will really appreciate sohyang’s concept of the video, it’s really different & I don’t want to spoil it by telling you too much but suffice to say she does her own harmonies!!!! One of the plus sides to the pandemic is that she’s gone from someone who hardly floods the market with her performances to having lots of content in the space of a year. I could see in your face how happy you were to be reacting to Sohyang again after a while without hearing her. I’ve done the same & there’s just something about that makes you feel good & I’m always left wondering how I could’ve gone without hearing her for so long. Anyway you now have lots of very up to date Sohyang material to shock you again & again ENJOY!!!

Check out Dayday, outdoor live performance with a group. Totally different from anything she's ever done! I won't spoil the surprise but she sings in a way you've never heard her sing before.
One interesting thing about this performance is that she gave an interview prior to it where she expressed disappointment in the way she sang the same song during her I Am Singer 2 run and said she was hoping to make up for it here. Mission accomplished. As I am fond of saying she doesn't just sing songs on stage, she lives them. There's never a time where you think she's anything but completely present and committed to an experience that she's inviting the audience to share with her which is what I think makes her such a special performer.

Honestly, the biggest thrill of watching Sohyang's performances is to enjoy how those unaware of her become awestruck from learning about her. However, this stunning stage of I Have Nothing, not only converts those uninitiated into believers, also delivers the shock value to those who already know about Sohyang's vocal prowess. I appreciate how you took note of Sohyang's arrangement in keeping with the original melody but with personalized flair in the performance. Of course, when it gets to the moments when she ascended the scale, we the audience could only sit back and watch in astonishment, but she relentlessly gave us a rollercoaster ride until the end. For future videos Sohyang's performance of Everyone (sung in Korean and English) is pretty incredible. Quite a journey and a feat of endurance in this one. So hard. My favorite of hers (or anyone).
Her You Raise Me Up performance (from Immortal Songs 2) is also great. Expertly made massive changes totally breathing new life into the song. The results can be astonishing when she makes changes well suited to her ability. By far my favorite rendition.
Where Are You and Fate (both sung in Korean) are spectacular performances with a completely different emotional feel than what you've seen from her so far. I think these were on MBC potentially making them tougher to do from a reaction standpoint.
Incredible as it is this performance wouldn't make my top 5 from her. I like some of her performances of songs that are new to me or those that aren't new to me but she has completely reworked more. I like your coverage of all the production aspects (arrangement, instrumental choices, backing singers, etc.) in your videos. Most who do these don't give these areas as much attention, so it is refreshing to see.

So pleased that you reacted to the "professional broadcast" version of this, rather than the audience bootleg that a lot of people used. In this one, you really get a better sense of the whole production and her mannerisms. (Though I suppose that the bootleg is useful in demonstrating that this was, in fact, a "real" performance - as opposed to cobbled together using studio "tricks" - and that she really is that amazing.)

Whitney Houston’s former manager saw So Hyang sing this on TH-cam and showed her to Oprah Winfrey, who brought her to David Foster’s attention. Foster then contacted So Hyang and arranged for her to share eight concerts with him at Tokyo’s famous Blue Note Club in late-2018 where she performed this at each concert! (For those who don't know, David Foster was Whitney Houston's producer for her albums, wrote "I Have Nothing", her most iconic song, and is probably the most famous and influential music producer in the world. He places So Hyang right beside Whitney and the rest of the top tier divas.)

Hi Nina. I don't think you have reacted to Sohyang's 'Everyone'. It's amazing. And the past year, she has been on the TV series Begin Again Korea. These are simple performances, mostly outdoors with small, socially distanced audiences. Very different the big stage performances we are used to from Sohyang. But wonderful. From this show check out Love Poem, Please, I Will Always Love You, Misty, Stay, or even hip hop Sohyang with Day Day. Begin Again Korea made a huge contribution to the body of quality Sohyang recordings that we have online. Often overlooked are her performances on King of Masked Singers, mostly because she wears a mask people like to see her while she sings. But ALL the King of Masked Singer performances are awesome. She surprised them all in the beginning with Atlantas Princess and Dear Love. Home is a favorite of mine, as is rock star Sohyang singing Mona Lisa. I look forward to whatever you choose.

As a total contrast to this big production of ‘I have nothing’ I recommend you take a look at her performance of another whitney song (act. Dolly Parton’s song), ‘I will always love you’ from the ‘begin again Korea’ series. Without spoiling it for you this is a more stripped back offering & the lack of instrumentation (piano only) really shows off her vocals. She had many performances in the ‘begin again’ series, all of which were recorded during the pandemic so this is bang up to date Sohyang. The idea of the show is that a small ensemble of musicians/singers go out in to work places & public spaces & put on mini gigs of a more acoustic nature to help keep up the spirits of the people ( they were basically busking). You will see performing on her own, as a duet & as part of the whole group in different places on different days & this is as ‘live’ as you can get. ‘I will always love you was the 1st performance of sohyang’s to be released & she appears to be in a pretty good place with regards to her health & oh boy! does it show, not only does she look amazing but she sounds better than ever in this format.
Throughout the ‘begin again Korea’ series she tackles many genre’s. She does the big ballads, rock,pop, blues/jazz( Ella Fitzgerald’s ‘Misty’ is amazing), obv the gospel & wait til you hear her rapping ( in a song called ‘day day’. Even though she was the token elder among younger Korean pop stars, Sohyang did the bulk of the rap because in rehearsals she was the only one with the breath control to spit those lines out fast,one after the other & although the others got better after practising, Sohyang did it straight away!!) throughout this series you will see many instances of not only the audience been shocked or brought to tears by her performances but her fellow performers can be see with mouths open in awe of her.
Search for’ Sohyang begin again’ & all her performances will appear, some well known English language songs & some in Korean but my fav 3 are ‘I will always love you’, ‘Misty’ & ‘I won’t give up’ by Jason Mars ( OMG!! Kleenex alert!).
Also during the pandemic she released a rarity, a music video of ‘never enough’, which the whole world & his dog seem to be singing these days. I know you prefer the live performance but I recommend you watch this music video,after all, you know that she can sing this song live if she wanted to, she can sing anything, but apart from the impeccable vocals I think you will really appreciate sohyang’s concept of the video, it’s really different & I don’t want to spoil it by telling you too much but suffice to say she does her own harmonies!!!!

One interesting thing about this performance is that she gave an interview prior to it where she expressed disappointment in the way she sang the same song during her I Am Singer 2 run and said she was hoping to make up for it here. Mission accomplished. As I am fond of saying she doesn't just sing songs on stage, she lives them. There's never a time where you think she's anything but completely present and committed to an experience that she's inviting the audience to share with her which is what I think makes her such a special performer.
