Everytime she covers a song, she pretty much owns it, to the point she makes the original artists want to perform together with her. That’s what happened with this, which caught the attention of Oprah too, eventually leading David Foster himself, to do a concert together. The same happened with “You raise me up” and Josh Groaban, “In the flower garden” and Sumi jo, a grammy award winning opera singer, Michael Bolton and “lean on me”. Michael saw the performance firsthand as he was invited as the guest and called her a virtuoso and invited her to his tour later.
Its the combination of her mastery in arrangements and emotional interpretation alongside her impeccable vocals, is what makes it all possible.

SoHyang is a master vocalist. She does what she does on purpose
She is probably.in her mid 30's here and is currently 42 years.of age. I have been following her for over a decade, and you are the first vocal coach to find fault with her. She is S. Korean, but can speak perfect english. She is the professor at her own music academy where she teaches singers. Her range is unreal. Recorded up to a A6, and her team.says her top note is a D7.
His critique is much more on Sohyang's stylistic choices rather than her technical fault although it touches on some aspects of technique. I am quite sure Sohyang is capable of doing it the way Peter wants her to do it so yes it is her judgement on the execution of some aspects of the song rather than her inability to use correct technique that is the central hallmark of the critique in this video.

I would not want her to mess with any of her pronounciations. She speaks English better than most native English speakers. Any of the very minor "imperfections" in her pronounciations helps remind us that she is Korean and how hard she worked at English and her vocals to pull off the greatest rendition of this song. That make it even more special.

Sohyang gives singing lessons just by singing. You HAD to FIND something to pick at her about because you are an EXPERT.
She is a Gospel and Pop singer. No strain or effort. Total breath control. She does ALL of her own arrangements - song, chorus, orchestra, staging, lights. costumes. She can sing anything, Gospel, Pop, Jazz, name it.
If you hear (see) other of her performances you will see that she is a flawless singer with unsurpassed control over her voice. if she does "something" it is because she intended to do it. She speaks three languages, writes novels and teaches music at a University.
But, you go ahead. I get it. Lots of singing teachers feel compelled to want to give Sohyang a singing lesson - enunciation, vowels, breathing, etc., out of arrogance . Or they have to pick at her out of jealousy, perhaps?
The rest of us just say WOW, go silent and try to catch a breath. That way we don't embarrass ourselves by wanting to give her suggestions. Just a word of advice.
She just screams and her voice lacks the richness, the depth, the velvety and the beauty that Whitney had and Houston could sing just as high and even more and her ''I'm changing'' live performance proves it.

This Australian male singing instructor doesn't understand the female voice like actual female singers and female coaches, who know that certain sounds must be modified when belting high notes. The smart ones (in other TH-cam channels) explain why certain syllables or phonemes are adjusted to produce better sound in a high belt.
If Sohyang followed Peter's advice, she'd end up with an Australian accent which, for a singing voice, is odd like his.

You probably won't be surprised to here that G5 is in fact in the sweet spot of her tessitura which is C5 to Bb5 in that unique heady mix that we perceive like an impossibly high chest belt. Fun fact - this arrangement of IHN starts in the key that Whitney ends in, and for a great bookend to this performance check out I Will Always Love You which was recorded with an acoustic arrangement in the original key where she concentrates on some really cool dynamics instead of just going full flamethrower mode as she did here.

Thank you for the reaction. Sohyang is a ccm/gospel singer and a world class vocalist. As far as technique is concerned she is one of the best (if not the best) according to dozens of vocal coaches/experts who have analysed her performances, which is why I was surprised with your critique of her technique. With all due respect, i doubt there is much you"d be able to teach her about vocal technique that she doesn't already know. I think it will become more apparent to you when you get to see more performances, as this song was easy for her. Best wishes.

Most of the pronunciation you're noticing is actually a choice, she speaks fluent English :D.
Sohyang's diction is perfect and doesn't exhibit any foreign accent. She actually pronounces English better than most American and British singers. Since she belts and sings at the extremes, she does do vowel modifications for technical reasons; other vocal teachers and session singers have pointed this out. In her sequence of stressed words "Don't ... Make ... Me ... Close ... One", she starts off rounded and low, and then incrementally works her way to open and high for epic effect.
If you had worked on her singing, she'd sound like an Aussie, which lots of folks won't fully understand. Consider how so many listeners, say, of rock songs, get confused; they may hear key lyrics wrong, and enter into heated arguments as to what was sung vs intended.

I like your reaction. Sohyang is a world class singer. Just listen to other coaches reactions to confirm this. By the way- I think her pronunciation is outstanding-not sure if she is fluent in English. I did not detect any accent. Whatsoever. A big fan of Sohyang Greetings from USA
So Hyang speaks very fluent English and when she sings she is perfect. She also has a perfect North American accent and taught herself how to speak English by watching movies when she was a kid. As far as anyone knows, she has only ever had two formal lessons, and they were very short, while she was on vacation in the US with Seth Riggs. I don't know how she does it, quite frankly. She is probably the most extraordinary woman I have ever come across.

So Hyang has mastered SLS technique (loved by Seth Riggs who uses her as example, although she studied w/ him a very, very short time). She lectures at university (is a professor) in Korea.
David Foster, said not since Whitney had he seen So Hyang’s level of vocal talent. He offered to sign her, but she declined due to her faith mission (& on-going health issues), so he settled on her joining him & Josh Groban on Asian leg of his 2018 tour.
So Hyang is 43, has gospel roots, independent, a devout Christian who sings 2 comfort those in hard times, (mission accomplished & she’s had many hard times...c her Wikipedia pg). She never sought fame... but it found her anyway.

This is one of her many what i call "don't try this at home" performances! If you're a singer and you love it offcourse keep on singing and keep on trying to become a better singer. However don't set the bar too high cause this is not next level it's the grand master level! Very few if any today can reach Sohyang's level!

I'm glad I listened to an expert explain it in a simple way... I am an american and have listened to many of her songs on passing by or radio for years...
