Dom, I've been playing guitar for fifty years. I have never heard a better video on realistic guitar parts. Keep up the great videos. Thanks, JamaicaJo.
This is why why the synthesizer is the greatest instrument ever created. They can realistically be any of the other instruments. And I mean ANY instrument.
Keep those wrists up! Oh, sorry, had a flash back there! Made me switch to drums and percussion. I like your strumming, you have been at it for a while, this is how I record guitar, and in an apartment it' comes in handy with headphones for acoustic! There are some real gems on your channel, just letting you know I appreciate it, and I'm likely more than 2 times your age, and appreciate the help being an old analog monster from the old earsplittin'loudenboomer era. But jazz and soca, funk etc ar4e what I love playing. Cuban music just gets so damn fun to play, but my guitar sucks! The 7 years of wasted piano lessons were not actually a total loss it turned out. (it was my piano teacher who said "Buy the kid a set of drums! He's good, always tapping on the piano when I leave the room" and they finally heard it. thanks you Don Alberry, RIP.
man i have to say - your TH-cam channel was one of my best find in the last months. This month i got a project for a lifetime and I had to make überrealistic live sounding mockups. This video helped me immensel.y
@@ProjectVastness I record live parts for lead and rhythm and also live bass. Gave up on virtual guitars. In fact it seems guitar plugins are the only instrument ( in my humble opinion ) that never nailed it. Even in 2021 Although Dom’s playing does a darn good job.
Amazing stuff. I'd add that for guitar, the strings you don't hit are also REALLY important - simulate some palm muting, string skipping, raking, fretting hand muting and movement from position to position or at least consider them in your parts - if you'd need to mute all the open strings to hit a given note, you'd probably not want big jumps at a high tempo. Let some imperfections happen, know what frets produce natural harmonics and incorporate them. Most libraries give you perfect even. chromatic harmonics, but you'd not be able to produce them so evenly on guitar across string sets unless you happen to be Tommy Emmanuel Partial chords are really important / double stops, triads etc. Guitars usually play just a couple notes of a chord, also guitars don't sustain like piano, you'll probably have to hit the note more often so your rhythms will vary - dotted notes, ties happen a lot, simply because it's hard to mute ringing strings exactly at the same time. Grace notes happen a lot, they should probably not be even in dynamics or duration from one to another. Try untuning your "guitar" slightly, microtonal bends etc. can really sell the part.
This should be an essential intro to all keyboardist before trying to make guitar parts live or in the studio. I’d like to add to Doms love of the Yamaha samples, that truly is some of the best sounds in any keyboards. If people isn’t particulary skilled in using eg. Kontakt instruments and at the same time using the ton of artikulations they often have, you may try get one of the top tier PSR keyboards from Yamaha if you dont have the budget for a Genos, or try find a Used Tyros 4-5. The samples are all based on the same library as Motif/Modx/Montage and the SA sounds is extremely smart programmed and can do the essential artikulation switching either automaticly or by using 2 dedicated buttons and they are pretty easy even for beginners to get to sound like a Pro.
Nice video, practical and this is the best minimum one should do. I’m a lead guitarist for 2 decades and I can easily tell which sounds right to articulate a guitar style of playing. If one can mix some mutings in a strum will make it even realistic. But as I said, this is a very good and complete tip for keyboard players who want to do guitar tracks on a keyboard.
I was - long time ago - in a music store in the guitar department, where in the same room they showcased the entertainment keyboards. One talented person played an acoustic preset and it sounded so realistic that I stopped my amp check and just listened to how he played such great, realistic acoustic guitar sounds on this "plastic" rig.
Great man ! I'm a keyboard player since 1985. I've played mostly Eastern, Indian music. I have played many songs of Eagles, UB40, Leanne Rimes, etc. It's the same situation with me and a guitar, I have 3 but I can't play the way a guitar player does. Just 1 string on the chord changes accompanied by strumming. Lol. But I can play the strumming pattern and chord, melody like you on the keyboard. I also play the harmonica, Indian Tabla drums and a bit of flute. I currently have a Yamaha dgx230, a Roland E09IN and an old Yamaha Electrone keyboard from the 80's. I will eventually purchase a Korg PA1000. Please play ' When the man comes around' by Johnny Cash, on the keyboard, using the acoustic guitar voice. I am going to give it a shot today but I would love to see your version of this. It's gonna be a challenge. Love your explanations.
I'm a guitar player - but thank you so much for the TRIM TOOL tip!!! All this time I can't believe I've never used it - I can now use this to create better piano parts as well as guitar strumming etc.
Really useful information, Dom. I thought I knew most of what you were going to explain, but I was thinking more along actual technique. I never even thought about typical guitar chord voicing and how you should alter chords on the keyboard to fit them. Great stuff!
Hahaha, couldn't resist the shred in the intro. Just missing the needle rip across vinyl sound insert between the acoustic and shred....thx for the vid.
I have Ilya Efimov Nylon too, but for some reason I m having terrible GUI problems with it. I can barely tweak the controls, and yet it sounds fantastic..
Just your intro to the video playing guitar with the keyboard was enough to make me to subscribe.. for sure I will learn a lot from you!! Thanks. (Adter watching the full video..damn God!! you make me to understand how to compose guitar parts and sound realistic!!. Amazing!!. Congrats from Andorra)
That Cubase trick on fixing the strums is cool. I hear software try to simulate guitar strums and they typically put too much delay between the strings especially for electric guitar. The delay is tiny but necessary to sound like a guitar strum.
Such a great video! Your channel is really helping me choose the DAW, VST's and learn the skills I will need to produce my songs! But I really need to know - to play the guitar on a MIDI like this, which is best: - a keyboard with light keys or semi-lested (not piano style heavy, I presume!) - a 49 key, 61key or bigger keyboard? Would be very grateful if someone could give me some advice here 😊 I will also be playing strings and drums on it, but not using very much electronic type "newer" sounds.
Exactly the same thing happed with me regarding the pitch bend. My first Yamaha PSR keyboard didn't have one and that's the reason I decided to buy a midi keyboard, so I could play solos. Great video once again, Dom!
Hi Dom, another great video. I've been playing keyboards since I was 15, and have been lucky enough to have played with some great drummers and bass players. This stood me in good stead for borrowing ideas and tricks from then when I had to program backing tracks for a 3piece I had back in the day, on my korg o1wfd and karma, on to mini disc believe it or not. You are spot on when you say you have to think about the limitations of the instrument you are thing to emulate. It would be great if you could put together a video like this one but for bass parts, for eh when to add slap or pulls, when to walk, roots and harmonies etc. Keep up the good work. I'm finally putting a home studio together so any other general studio/recording vids/hints/tips in addition to what's already up would be great. Cheers James
I have played keyboard with interesting hybrid portamento + polyphony mode on some guitar voices, it sounds very beautiful. Some times it generated sound of hand sliding on cords - between two accords. :-) But it needs various special techniques of playing. It was Yamaha Tyros 5 keyboard.
I started following your channel a coupla days ago, and what i really like about you, is that your just as interested and passioned about getting a fundamental "real" and good sound.. My problem also. LOL
My problem is really making realistic guitars with vsts , in the way I imagine it or compose it. Always a pain -.-

This is great!! Remember though guys 7+ string guitars are very popular now, it all depends on the genre
Cool..for electric guitars we can play blue scale with pitch bend.
