About the hi hats and how they're mapped, it's worth noting that the f# is usually a closed hi hat hit with a stick, whereas the g# is a hi hat being closed with the foot pedal. A subtle difference, maybe, but a useful distinction.

Dom, I have played keys and guitar for over 50 years, and programmed drums since the late 70's, but I never saw what fun it was to hand play all those drum notes even though I almost completely memorized GM. Until today. Thank-you so much! What a riot!

I have known that you could play great keyboard drums for 20 years, yet I have sat on my ass and only became a mediocre keyboard drummer. I know how it is done and now in my old middle age I am going to go ahead an become a bad ass. Practice, practice and copy from live and midi files. I need to follow my own advise.

Quick tip for the drummers transitioning to finger drumming: use the midi transformer plugin to change your sustain pedal to be your kick! When you want to edit you just apply the transformer template to your midi part in the logical editor to convert sustain to midi notes ;)

I was in a rut using ProTools and you convinced me to buy an upgrade for an old copy of Cubase. I remembered how creative I could get with it. It was my first DAW software. Dom, I love you man, your enthusiasm is so infe3ctious, and its because of you i decided to get cubase in the first place, having been a Nuendo user back in Version 2 and 3 And then meandering since then on Live and then Logic briefly and then Presonus Studio One, and then predominantly on Reaper, before coming full circle and committing to Cubase 12 Pro I’m so happy i did, and your influence was so much of a contributing factor , and now Finger Drumming which is a dreaded territory for me, now seems like it is possible. God Bless You Dom, your a saint man

That was some tight finger drumming there my dude! When I first started drumming on my keys I wld always play a more rock style kit even tho I wanted to play hip hop, it's like I wld have to force myself to slow down and not hit the snare every beat lol!

You know so far you have the best lessons on this subject? YA! Thank you again. You just mentioned something very important, ... START SLOWLY. I started drumming at the age of 1964, and the drums burned in 1984. Yes 20 years experience on drums. I have never done this before, but, knowing what you've shown I can start my own beats for my songs. Now I'm ready to start my new project, putting finger-drumming rolling in my music. It's going to take some practice. Thanks again.

This video blew my mind. I always thought the GM mapping was kind of weird, I never "got it". But now that you put it that way, it makes perfect sense. I was just looking for a drum pad controller for finger drumming, but having seen this, I might just end up sticking with the good ol' keyboard.... at least while I have no space for an e-drum set ;)

I think the mapping is one thing that is often overseen by the companies that make Drum Libraries. Many Drum sample libraries have the different articulations all over the keybed. Just like the GM map they need to get this standariced, so its practical for both keyboard players and follow a standard for E-Drums. And comming up with your own usable mapping in Cubase is essential but time consuming. Cubase has had a pretty neat feature with O and i-notes in the Drum editor even since the Atari days. Not sure how many know and use this old feature, but I wish more companies actually made Drum maps with their products for cubase so you don't have to do it from scratch every time you use a library with a different key mapping.

This tutuorial was absolutely amazing! I always wanted to learn finger drumming but was totally confused as to how they are doing it on PAD controllers. Everybody had different instrument setups? I see it is better to use the Keyboard in GM (General MIDI) drum mappings! The only drawback I can see is the sounds are standard across all manufacturers. No special kits can be mapped? Anyway, I will get to practicing by getting a 47 key controller and not use my 88 key behemoth. Thanks so much!

Quick addition: the G#1 is actually called Pedal HiHat... It's the sound that's made when you close an open HiHat by pressing the pedal, forcing the hihat cymbals to cinch shut against each other. It might sound noticeably off to the trained ear if you play it as a hihat.

You are just a great youtuber , musician and teacher. Thank you. Just wanna know. Those key settings in Groove agent and Cubase do you program in a certain pracrical way ? Second question what midi keybords can you suggest for this? En economic keyboard? And how would you typically begin a song? First write the drums ? Then develope over that ?
