    I've been wearing my Zenith Defy Skyline for five months now and I'm crazy in love with it. My Daily is the Explorer, but as soon as I put the Zenith back on my wrist, it's just... Wow! The feeling it gives on the wrist is incredible! I love this manufacture, it is a brand intended for enthusiasts - connoisseurs.

    The only thing that would have made the Zenith perfect to me is, they should have added the traditional 60s hand also. The 10s and 60s hands moving would look very cool, and be more practical, and further show the complexity of that el primero movement. Having said that, I still purchased the Defy. I do wish more knew the RO copied the Defy...

  • @willbrink

    The AP is wildly over priced on the secondary market any way you look at it, and borderline for me at MSRP. The Zenith is one of the most underrated watches that exist. I have the Zenith Defy Skyline and it's top tier quality for a fair price for such quality. I hope Zeneth remains underappreciated as it keeps the prices down!

    I have had the worst AP experience ever. I wanted AP watch, went to the boutique, ordered one (they had literarly 0 watches to sell in boutique), payed 30 000 upfront and was promised my watch in 3-4 months. 10 months later I still did not get the watch, every employee I spoke to (phone or in person) was acting arogant and with no interest when I asked (not complained) about the delay. Had to get lawyers involved, because when I requested money back after 10 months they refused. Long story short, I was walking the same street as the AP in Prague has its boutique and I got myself Breitling Superocean, Zenith Defy, and Rolex Daytona for less, than AP I wanted. Never going to AP ever again.

    I’m proud owner of the Skyline and can confirm the high quality, features like the 10 second hand, additional rubber bracelet or dial. Of course the AP snobs are unhappy to see such a great brand as Zenith offering high quality products for a fair price and (on very top) a better availability than AP. So why should i care about AP RO if i don’t want to spend 3x more and basically can not get it?

So good that i am considering to buy it. AP Royal Oak is legendary watch and it's great, but i don't see that this Zenith Defy Skyline is a lesser watch in any regard except the finishing on the movement and gold rotor.

    If rappers never rapped about wearing an AP people would probably look at it and say, Meh. The dial is fairly basic IMO.
    The Zenith is the smart buy if you dont care about flexing or signalling your wealth to people.
    Objectively there's a better finish to the AP but is it worth 3X more. No way.
    Id buy the VC Overseas every day of the week and you get over 260yrs of pedigree with that purchase. It a no brainer.

    I"ve owned both of these watches (15400 RO and Black Zenith Skyline) and the RO is unquestionably the better watch. The finishing on the case and dial, and movement decoration alone make it a better watch. However, given current prices, the marginal gains you get from the RO aren't worth the inflated prices. Plus, I think the Zenith seconds hand (although admittedly useless) is a pretty cool element that gives the Zenith its own unique twist on the overall Genta-esque design.

    • @WatchAdvisor

      @@trcs3079 It can’t be five times better though… AP is artificially hyped, shortages are created and many watches directly go to the parallel-market to be sold there for an overprice. With Zenith it should be for me first the El Primero with the Chrono in Orginal size of 38 mm - the history of Charles Vermot saving the tools, dials and design drawings of the El Primero Caliber in the seventies is so wonderful and thrilling - history at the wirst. But first saving money - quite difficult nowadays. I am enjoying the Tissot PRX Powermatic 80, blue dial - just some 650 Euros and terrific looking like the ones you are presenting here. I just would mention (as an owner of several AP RO with the last mechs) - they are not as durable and precise, as EL Primero. And they are still very easily influenced by the magnetic fields. You wouldn’t feel that so much in Zenith or VC (which is officially antimagnetic) and even in Patek. And for me it is a big sadness, as I like RO a lot, have models from the past and now. The new Chronograph is even worse - I have offshore and RO 50 years on thet caliber and both were sent to the manufacture for warranty repair. Pity. But, still, when I am looking on RO and in details - it makes me much happier, then any Zenith could. Especially if you like to watch the watch from the back, to “meditate” watching the caliber - new AP is one of the finest ever.

    Great insight on both timepieces!!! Thank you. Obviously if available at retail I’ll take the AP Royal Oak. However, a Zenith is bang per buck for what it offers. The AP movement is beautifully decorated yes, but it will be expensive to service. You can’t wear an AP as a daily beater. The Zenith movement has a basic finishing, but the movement is robust and accurate. Zenith’s strength is in its movements. Enthusiasts buy Zenith for the reliability history heritage. It’s a watch for watch nerds that know Horology. The Royal Oak is for a well to do sporty guy that likes a high end sports watch when he doesn’t want to wear his Patek Philippe watches. It’s a haute Horology weekend watch. It’s perfect for a Monaco lifestyle. To be honest I would take both in a black dial if it didn’t have a date…. and if I had the money for both. For now I’m ok with my Rolex Explorer 36mm Speedy Pro, & JLC Reverso mono face large small seconds. My perfect 3 piece combo meal deal.

    I must agree with your assessment Alexander that the current lack of availability at dealers and the gray market pricing is absolutely ridiculous ! While I do not pretend to know the intricacies of the present situation, paying other than retail pricing for a mass production time piece is not an option for a working man like myself.
    I do hope that AP and Rolex get their house in order and their dealers in line for the sake of their own integrity if for nothing else. The Zenith is a beautiful time piece and at 1/10 the price of an AP-RO, one would be hard pressed to find greater value.

    Zenith all the day. The original, even before Gerald Genta. I don't care marketing who makes look Rolex and AP as the best brands ever (LOL), i look at the heritage. And Zenith wins. I also don't think the different finish on the case back is a matter of cost containment. Rather, it is a choice in line with the style of the watch, which is not a dress watch or a classic watch, so in my opinion the Defy with the exposed movement finished in a technical-industrial style goes better with the watch itself.

    I really appreciate and enjoy your review. In my opinion, the Skyline is the best integrated bracket in its category, and there are at least 26 different type of such integrated bracelet watches across all price categories. If the AP Royal Oak is the benchmark, then Zenith Skyline can offer its owner 90%-95% of the satisfaction and enjoyment, without being subjected to the law of diminishing returns. If someone has to pay 100k to achieve the 100%, then he/she clearly has different priorities in life. No doubt, at retail price, anyone here would buy the AP if available to him/her. Life is too short to only wait for "perfection". And speaking of "perfection ", I noticed that the screws at the case back of the AP does not line up like those on its bezel. Lastly, the date change at 12 is something I appreciate very much too. Cheers Alexander, and looking forward to your next review.

      The Zenith is the more modern watch… the Royal Oak is an icon, a classic…

    I tried on the defy skyline and was quite impressed overall. The problem for a poor man like me is that I probably could only afford one Zenith and it seems more appropriate to buy a one with a chronograph function given how iconic its chronograph is….

      Please don’t say “poor man”! What is rich or poor? You are emotional and passionate that is what counts!! Choose wisely, watch our other Zenith videos and let me know if you have any questions…

    Can you redo this comparison with the defy skyline chrono and the Royal oak chrono?

      @@WatchAdvisor If anyone can do it, it's you Alex! You have the only videos on the Zenith Defy Skyline Chrono from W&W this year. Remarkably so little talk and buzz about it. Chrono is where Zenith really hits above class and they finally unleashed their best asset the el primero in its full capacity in the Defy skyline lineup. The 10 sec function makes a lot more sense in the true chrono format and is visually much more stunning in the larger sweep. Perhaps they addressed some of your critiques from this video regarding showcasing the movement better?

    I hope Zenith takes the next step with the Defy in 2023 and make a two tone gold Defy! If they do, I hope, if they do, don't do a plated or covered link but a solid gold link version! Do it right!

    • @WatchAdvisor
      @WatchAdvisor  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      ..."plated or covered link but a solid gold link" ... You must be kidding! Zenith can't afford doing this...

    • @freedomfighter6549
      @freedomfighter6549 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Are you saying that their catalog of watches that are gold or two tones are no solid linked, like the Chronomasters? Rolex can do it, I believe Oris just out a solid gold bezeled diver with their new 400 movement. I'm confused...

    • @freedomfighter6549
      @freedomfighter6549 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Of course the prices for a two toned piece will significantly go up from the base $8400 steel models. But, it gives the line a blast of snazzy!!
