In 2011 I went to the CWS for my high school graduation present with my dad. He still says it was the best baseball experience he has had. Definitely reccomend going and just picking a team to root for when you get there. I got to see JBJ before my red sox drafted him, and many other future MLB players.

Thanks for making this video Mike. This video brought back great memories for me. I went to a small D3 college in New London Connecticut called Mitchell College, a school with only 600-700 students. During that time, I was the student manager of my school’s baseball team, where I got to experience great memories, high intensity games, and made great friends with teammates who I am still friends with to this day. On top of that, our team was incredibly successful with three conference championships, 3 NCAA bids, National rankings, and delivers joy and pride to our college and the town at large. This is why I have a huge love for college baseball.

Glad to see that Hawaii got some love at the end. I moved to Hawaii last year, and as COVID restrictions finally loosened last fall, I started going to all kinds of UH sporting events. With no professional teams here, the Rainbow Warriors are the team to cheer for.
When I went to their first baseball game this season back in February, MLB was still mired in the lockout. I instantly fell in love with the scrappiness of that team, and it somehow made the pain of the lockout diminish a bit. Even though they lost, I didn't seem to care that it took four and a half hours to play nine innings because the crowd was in it the whole time. The next two games averaged four hours as well, and the crowd's enthusiasm never wavered. The intimate atmosphere got me hooked. (The view of Diamond Head beyond right-center is pretty good too.)
They have a first year year coach in Rich Hill, who seems to have revitalized the fanbase and the team. This year they had their best conference record since moving to the Big West ten years ago, finishing in third place. Prior to this season, they only had one year with a winning record in the Big West. He's also the first person I've seen call for timeout to have a meeting with the runners and the batter, and he does it on a regular basis.
I saw Vandy nearly throw a (seven inning) perfect game, and I saw Hawaii pitching shut down Brooks Lee, the #5 prospect in this year's draft, going 0-4 with 2 K's.
Needless to say, they made me a fan this year, and I can't wait to see them make some noise in the next few years.

As a long-time college baseball advocate I truly appreciate this video. I had the opportunity to play for a year at the D3 level (I'm poor and didn't have too many college options, I had to go with the cheapest school and make it work). It was an incredible opportunity even for just a single year at that level. You did a great job presenting college baseball for all of its glory.

This is a great ode to college baseball, thank you so much for this video
For me personally, my local team is James Madison University. They have one of the best draft prospects in Chase DeLauter and during the summer of 2020, covid hit and their season (and every college teams season) was lost. He and his teammate Reifsnyder stayed around and played for our local league RCBL, and he put up a show. He had an OPS above 2 in that league. To have a guy that good, plus a teammate who was a swag spark plug, was great for our community during the difficult times. They continued to show that when college ball came back, even with DeLauter's untimely foot injury.
I love that you hit on the community aspect of college ball, because any baseball fan realizes that impact. I think part of the way the game can grow is if college ball becomes more accessible, and I'm starting to see it happen slowly but surely. Bless you guys, and good luck in your next step Mike!

Thanks for giving my Rebs a shout out! I was lucky enough to watch them win it all in Omaha this summer, and it was truly amazing. College baseball really is a community-uniting program.
It's a bit of a tired meme at this point, but I think it would've been cool to point out Tim Elko's performance in last year's playoffs on a torn ACL. You'll never ever see something like that in the pros.

I'm lucky enough to work for my university's baseball team's games and let me tell you it was the best job I've ever had. I essentially get paid to watch college ball. The fans I get to talk to are some of the nicest folks I've met, they all know so much and have been going to the games for decades. Ended up hosting a regional and being at those games was an amazing atmosphere that was arguably more electric than the MLB postseason games I've been to.

Went to the TCU’s both super regional games this past year and oh boy. The environment was absolutely insane despite it being pretty damn hot. Fans waiting for almost 3 hours for gates to open for the GA seats. I even went to games in the middle of the week against low tier teams and it was still an amazing environment. College baseball is so underrated and everyone should go to at least a game or as a bonus, go to a tournament game

Boise State played baseball a total of 3 weeks and you had a small clip of them. So sad they dropped their program after a 30ish year hiatus.
I went to the CWS this year for the first time. Wanted to go for the championship series no matter who was playing. I wore my Cal State Fullerton jersey and was pretty much surrounded by Ole Miss fans. It was a fun atmosphere.
The year Fresno State won (2006), they were a 4-seed in their regional and probably only got in because they won their conference.
You forgot another unlikely team to win the College World Series, Rice (2003).

  • @neverendingtoasterbath956
    @neverendingtoasterbath956 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Awesome video, one quick note on Ole Miss tho: Ole Miss actually wasn’t the worst team to make it, they were the last at large bid and got slotted in as a 3 seed in their regional iirc. It’s more like an 11 or 12 seed winning March madness (which will also probably never happen because baseball is special and the Regional->Supers->CWS format is the best college tournament to exist fight me) but those regional 4 seeds that were small conference winners got absolutely mowed down this year for the most part
Edit: just looked and the 16 4 seeds combined to go 4-32, with Air Force making a run to the regional finals with 2 of those wins, alongside Missouri State and Central Michigan each winning one game. Not exactly a shining record, but still had some teams make legitimate noise (Air Force almost won a regional with Texas in it and Central Michigan almost beat Florida…twice) with more still that took powerhouses to the wire in big games before falling to 0-2

Talking about the environment around college baseball. Charles Schwab Field holds about 25k people. For the finals, OU had about 2-3k fans in the stands. Ole Miss had the rest. I was not able to go, but my parents were able to go to the finals. I called them after the last out and I could barely hear them over the crowd going absolutely wild. They said it was that level for a half hour after the game ended.

I wish the games at UCLA were as exciting as the other states. I saw Trevor Bauer pitch while he was at UCLA and the game was so dull. After watching this I will definitely give college baseball another go.

This was a fantastic video. But let's make one thing clear: The Ole Miss Rebels were **not** the worst-ranked (64th) team in the NCAA tournament this year. Not even close. They weren't even the worst-ranked team in their own regional. They were a regional 3-seed in a 4-team regional in the opening weekend of the tournament. They were the last at-large team to make the tournament. Plenty of high-quality teams didn't get a bid. I'm dead certain that Rutgers and NC State would have put up a much better fight in regionals than Long Island did, even though Long Island dominated their conference's regular season and won their tournament. Every conference has a way to decide which team gets an automatic bid (almost always the conference tournament), and the remaining slots are decided at-large. This is exactly the same process as March Madness, where the "bubble" teams get 11 or 12 seeds. Not the 16 seeds. Bubble teams get regional 3 seeds, as several conference tournament champions are strong enough to have gotten an at-large bid, but most of them are not.
That said, as a Maryland alum, I was fortunate to witness College Park hosting a regional for the very first time in their history. Maryland was a dormant program for a long time, but through excellent coaching and smart recruiting, they built a quality program and just had an incredible, record-smashing season. I've never seen our humble stadium so packed, so loud, so passionate. It was tons of fun and a sight to behold, even though we ran out of quality pitching in the bullpen and lost Game 7 against an incredibly disciplined and underseeded Connecticut team. The passion in our small stadium, from the fans and players alike, is unlike anything else in sports. It's not super commercialized like the pros, or college football and basketball. It's pure sport. The beauty of baseball. And everyone's giving their all for their team and their school. The parity is incredible. The moments, unforgettable. I love it.
