Best John O story (while maybe apocryphal) is Rickey, after joining John in Seattle, noticed he played in a helmet and said “I used to play with a guy like that in NY” and John said “yeah, Rickey, that was me”
Holy shit, the "whopper" part of the video played and then a real ad played and it was the SAME damn burger king commercial! What the hell is the nonsense.
I think you forgetting Mark Kotsay 641 abs 52 k's 45 hrs .404 ba 216 rbis. pitching (mainly a reliever/closer)3 wins 2 loses 14 saves 3.90 era (only bad stat)
Loved Olerud from jump with the Jays. The era he played in kinda obscured how good he was - other 1Bs were hitting 40 bombs and driving in 100, and getting all the attention; while Olerud was busy "only" hitting .300, walking a hundred times, and playing the best defense in the league - except for the few years he shared a league with Mark Grace. Everybody in the '90s wanted a first baseman who could bat cleanup, a 1B tailor made for the 2-hole was bound to be underrated. What's weird (I mean not that weird - the Cubs had WGN showing their games nationwide) is that Grace is more remembered than Olerud, though Johnny O was better almost every year they were both in MLB. And yeah. The Babe Ruth of college ball.
i got to see trevor bauer and gerrit cole pitch at the college world series for ucla!! they were crazy good i also saw buster posey for florida state, jackie bradley jr. for south carolina, dustin ackley for unc, gordon beckham and josh fields for georgia
Great vid. I share the love for John-O. The man seemed to hit 300 every year, also had some pop in his bat and, from what I’ve heard anyway, was a great teammate.
Surprisingly he only ever hit over .300 4 times. I figured he had more considering he's a .295 career hitter. He had another 4 where he hit over .290 but also like 6 seasons where he hit below .280.
Not only could he hit over .300 consistently, his 1993 season was one in which he hit over .400 for a good chunk of the season until he started to fall off post All-Star break.
I can apricate trying to avoid recency bias, but you can't not at least mention Adley Rustchman. Buster Posy was amazing, but do you not agree Rustchman's time at Oregon State was any less impressive? As a two sport athlete freshman he played in 61 games, hitting .234/.322/.306 on his way to a CWS appearance. Sophomore year he gives up punting for the football team, reworks his swing and slashed .408/.505/.628 with nine home runs and 83 RBIs ending that season with a CWS record 17hits, CWS MVP and least forget the Championship itself? How did he follow that up? Junior year, pegged as the consensus number one over all pick, with a new Coach, multiple team mates from the past few seasons drafted in the first round? The answer is .411/.575/.751 with 17 home runs and 58 RBIs. Yes he didn't make it to the CWS that season, but his performance was so dominate that he took home both the Golden Spikes and the Dick Houser awards.
Thank You For The College Baseball History On OLERUD. I Learned Something New Today In Sports History. I Only Remember Him Wearing That Hitters Hat All Time & Now It All Makes Sense.
I was at a Toronto v Texas series when Olerud was in Toronto and over a 3 game stretch when he didn't walk he bounced bullets off walls of Arlington Stadium. He hit the wall on every single ball he put in play!!
no mention of spencer torkelson? his total numbers get buried because of a covid-shortened season and an early collegiate exit for the draft, but being fortunate to watch him every day was a magnificent sight to behold. one of the sweetest right handed swings, incredible plate discipline, GREAT defense evident by his move to 3rd upon being drafted
YES! Olerud was great Id pay to watch that guy take BP Mostly forgotten mlb player but had a very respectable career with flashes of a superstar (93 season) He came to the sox in 2005 and i got there early, hoping to watch him hit. Maybe the most underrated swing in modern baseball And, I think, a real down to earth guy that's gone through heavy stuff...i believe the reason he came to Boston was because of the excellent hospitals. His kid had health issues.
Bob Horner was the best overall college hitter. Anthony Rendon was probably the best freshman and sophomore. For a two-way player, Dave Winfield was probably the best pitcher in college in 1973. Shut out USC's best team in the CWS. Horner and Winfield both went directly from college to the majors, Winfield of course as an outfielder.
Barry. However, Buster has a real argument. Lance Berkman was UNBELIEVABLE. My favorites though: Jeff Weaver, Giuseppe Chiaramonte, and Justin Wilson. Go Dogs!!!
I'm sorry. Barry Bonds wasn't ONE of the best players of his generation, Bonds is THE greatest player of his generation and arguably the greatest player of all time. Other than that, fantastic video!
on the contrary, these collegiate statements likely solidify Bonds as the greatest player on the offensive side of the ball. Steroids don't make you good at hitting the ball. all I'm saying

I hate to be that guy, but this story has been debunked by Rickey and Olerud himself
@@RileyMerlino apocryphal means “doubtful of origin”, I know the story is probably untrue, it’s still funny.
Barry. Bonds. his entire team at ASU voted to kick him off the team but he was so valuable that the head coach vetoed the team’s vote

Marshall mcDougall hit 6 hr in one game, which is impressive. Just pointing it out
Robin Ventura and Pete incavillia were unreal at ok state.

Gerald Dempsey Posey III, not "Dempster"
Thank you
Great Vid! Love watching college baseball! I was wondering if you could do a video on Mickey Vernon?
Great video, nice work Jordan.
great video
Can’t forget Pedro Alvarez….he broke every hitting record at Vanderbilt….it’s why he went 2nd overall in the 2008 draft….ahead of your boy Posey 🤷🏼♂️
Interesting topic to cover, now I know why some if these guys were heavily scouted before they got drafted into the MLB
JD Drew, Pat Burrell and the freak Tim Linculm ( SP) should have been mentioned in my opinion
Before I even watch a second of this, it's Pete Incaviglia!
He better at least be top 3
