    Thanks for sharing. I think that, at this point, free charging is fine for Rivian ... for now. They are limiting the DCFC to their customers, so this will let them gauge interest, measure usage, and work out any bugs when access is completely unrestricted by cost Besides which, their demand charges are going to far outweigh any amount that they could recoup by charging a fee.
    Long term, they are going to need to open these up to non-Rivian EVs in order to offset demand fees and start recouping expenses.

  • @inferno10
    @inferno10 2 ปีที่แล้ว +19

    I sure hope Rivian will keep their network open to other CCS-capable cars instead of walling it off. Even something like charging a little more for non-Rivian vehicles would help.

    We drove our Mach E through the lot last month hoping Rivian had turned on and we'd just missed it. Nope, you could see the charger spots, but they were all boarded up. Glad to see they've gone live! And if you don't like the Safeway, check out the Chargepoint station on the south side of town. It's a great spot, with shaded parking, a picnic table and restaurant, etc. And they're probably a bit faster than the RAN chargers if you can't get the DCFC slot :/ .

    Thanks so much Kyle and family for another great video. And to be the first one to plug in that is pretty cool! If you could share more info on the location buildout of the RAN network, that would be awesome. So far the company has been pretty silent on that. I live in MN and we are at such a void of any real fast chargers at all other than one EA station in Woodbury. Not even 100 or 150 KW options. 50Kw max, and very few that are dispersed around the state to even allow to get to and from adventure destinations. It is so sad.

    • @Bengy22
      @Bengy22 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Looking at their proposed charger installation map, I see an ENORMOUS black hole in the central US, nothing between i-20 and I-70 and nothing between I-25 and I-35, leaving eastern Colorado, western Kansas, western Oklahoma, and the northwest quarter of Texas totally unserved, just like they are today with the Electrify America and Tesla Supercharger networks. I find this extremely odd because this is the part of the country that is producing the vast majority of the wind power in the US.

    • @GreenBlueWalkthrough
      @GreenBlueWalkthrough 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah and most of their chargers in Florida are in urban or highway locations and pretty much all have no renewable energy sorce... Like the 1 is in downtown Jax abnd we jusyt upgraded from clean coal to Natraul gas and that charger spot is roughly 50 miles from a dirt road let alone an adavnture spot other then a fort and biking.

      Tesla fans constantly cite the non-public DCFC network as one of the best things about owning a Tesla. Rivian is providing free level 2 for everybody, which is awesome. And they're building both that and DCFC in underserved areas. Eventually, when it's more ubiquitous, everybody will go public with their DCFC but until Tesla does, I don't see any reason Rivian should give up a competitive advantage in the niche they're targeting. Developing this stuff isn't cheap.

    • @ericroe
      @ericroe 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@erikreppen9257 it’s not a competitive advantage when you have 3 stations. And underserved area? The one in Inyokern is literally in the same parking lot at 2 different Superchargers. The one is Bishop is a block from an Electrify America. And the one in CO has a ChargePoint in town.
      As a shareholder they are loosing money having stations in little used areas by not making them available to all EV’s. They are leaving money on the table, but that’s what Rivian is good at.

    I’m surprised they (and everyone else) don’t integrate cameras right into the charging stations

    • @toml3955
      @toml3955 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Why? With gear guard activated the car has extremely sufficient surveillance capabilities.

    • @ccsuny2000
      @ccsuny2000 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@toml3955 I still think it’s beneficial. Some of those are public chargers, plus a criminal may not know the Rivian has cameras, but if it’s posted that the area is under surveillance it will be a deterrent.
      A side benefit is it will prevent/catch people that vandalize charging stations, which does happen.

      Yeah, it’s gonna be sketch when thieves realize that people are locked in for over an hour, can’t drive away quickly, probably have some cool things to steal along with the 100k car…

    I was surprised to see a Rivian Adventure Network open in Montrose Colorado just six months after the initial station in Salida. No mural in Montrose. There are only two other DC CCS plugs in town and unfortunately Rivian’s is limited to Rivians. They have not seen much use so far. On the positive side the site includes two 11 kw J1772 plugs open to all.

    Please reach out to Munro live and offer to help with the ADAS testing , from what I have seen you guys do the most in-depth practical work comparing the systems .

      Isn't Munro in Michigan? They are like 1000miles or more apart.

    Next thing for Rivian is a camp mode like Tesla so that you don't have to do the seatbelt trick for the ac.

    Good presentation and very informative. The convenience has not been reached yet. Over an hour to charge to get 230 miles of highway range with about 35 MPGe (car and driver) is very well considering low maintenance and reliability. However, the price point for an average population is a long pipe dream. Well, at least it is opening up possibilities!

    Even Rivian decided to leave their customers out in the weather by not providing covers over the parking area. I also wonder how much the eventual road tax charge will be per KW. Watching the west coast to see how much of an increase it will be.

    I'd love to have a Rivian but I just don't have a need for a truck of any kind. And I don't want to help my friends move.

    Is this only for rivian vehicles? Does it support 800v? How is it powered by renewable energy?

    The only thing Tesla has going for them in my option is their charging network. I hope Rivian puts as much effort in their network as Tesla has done. I think they will have to if they want to be a competitor to Tesla. As far as Ford and GM goes this is something their going to have to work on. They may go to some of the other networks and help them expand. I also think it would be smart for some gas stations to open up a few networks on there land as well. I do plan on getting a R1T everything I have seen is great. I may just wait a year or two though so that Rivian can work out some of the kinks I have seen on them. Namely there power tonneau cover and just like tesla some production improvements. Not to mention my current outback is still running like a dream so being realistic I can't get ride of it yet. But as far as trucks go I do like the Ford lightning except for its size. Barely fitting into a standard 2 car garage is a turn off for me. The Rivian is a bit smaller but its still bigger then a midsize truck like the Ranger so that appeals to me a lot more. All in all thanks for your videos I have watched a lot of them to get me up to speed on this truck.
