Not to mention having a glass back even though it doesn't have wireless charging, the glass isn't anything great at that making quite possibly the most unnecessarily fragile new gen. smartphone out right now. • @DylanM15
      @DylanM15 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Tech is always advancing at an extremely fast rate. Also realistically I genuinely see this having been to the third world countries. (Not that the world needs technology by any means of course as anymore it's an addiction to most than a benefit at times especially in the first world countries.) There is more technology in third world countries than most people honestly would expect though. The faster that first world countries advance in technology. The faster that technology can decrease in price to reach third world countries. That's not just with phones and tablets though, but with important tech for those countries like medical, educational, and food sustainability.

    • @ChrisWEEZ
      @ChrisWEEZ 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I'd say that it's incrementing at an extremely fast rate these days. How different are current smartphones from the first iPhone?

    • @DylanM15
      @DylanM15 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Id agree to an extent. They are not drastically different but a lot of it is specs based and improving the design of the rounded rectangle's most phones are now. That's purposeful for most smartphone makers though and tech as a whole, why big updates year to year are rather incremental because they don't want to waste all their "new" ideas all in one year. Also just the fact it's statistically proven people as a whole across all countries no matter who they are don't like change. People like similarity and the comfort of normal. So changing too much makes people gravitate away from whatever it is. To some people that change is getting new technology at all whether they hate it or just the country doesn't have the capability to access it. Which is why country to country it's so different. Smartphones overall are a very small niche in technology as a whole too. On top of that it's primarily a consumer based market, so it sees updates the slowest. That's why right now things such as drones are finally considered being used by businesses in consumer applications as well as being used by consumers. While farmers and other industries across the world have used drones and a ton of other tech for easily over 10 years. There are farmers now finally in some impoverished areas are using drones or iPads and gps or a variety of other technology for farming as the cost is finally reaching their budget to overall improve on their capabilities. That's just one example.

      Just ask yourself these questions: Will your life be palpably improved if the phone manufacturers do manage to develop the technology enabling them to remove the bezels, notches and chins from smartphones? It's little more than aesthetics. Wouldn't you prefer to have bezels that house a front facing camera of equal quality to the rear camera. Front firing speakers that don't have to be compromised by the misconceived notion that we need to have bezelless screens? The manufacturers are reacting to the popularity/views of online videos. The smartphone owners and potential future buyers, are also being influenced by the same online videos, that are produced by the channel owners, that make content, according to their historic channel analytics. I personally would preferr to have a notchless screen, an uncompromised front facing camera and an optimum quality front firing speaker/speakers, housed in the bezels of a phone only 10mm bigger overall, wouldn't you?

    Noo :{ I like the Bezels for a few important reasons. I've had several of the Samsung phones, S6 edge, Note 7, Note 8 S8 + and that no bezel on the sides doesn't work for me. The palm rejection is real hit or miss, more miss than anything. When I hold the phone in landscape I am blocking the speaker as there is no where to hold the phone.
    This is another reason I gravitated to the Pixel, larger bezels and something to hold.
    I don't agree with putting sensors, mics and speakers on the top or the bottom of the phone (to replace the front) because again, my hands will block them (I can hear Steve Jobs in my head saying "you're holding the phone wrong").
    I honestly feel the "no bezels" is just a "thing" today for manufactures to say hey we do it better. But it isn't better. I want a little bezel, a place for my hands, no bezels are great nor screens that you don't hold like a TV on the wall or a laptop, desktop, thermostat etc.
    I really want those bezels coming back in vogue with manufactures so these hand held devices can be hand held again. Even when palm rejection is mastered, I don't want to cover part of my screen because there is no bezel.
    Perhaps I am alone in this, I would rather have the 2 sizes to choose from, one crazy big, and one pocket friendly. I'll still buy the crazy big with some bezel :)

      Me too, I hate those small bezels and big notches, just for a bigger screen. I rather have a big, bulky and heavy phone, as long as it has a big Battery, good speakers, a headphone jack,...
      I would go as far, as to print a extra large phone case, witch adds weight and bulkiness with my 3d printer

    • @imranvp
      @imranvp 6 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      Bezels also take away one super-important feature in my opinion. The front-facing stero speakers option. I would much rather have top and bottom bezels to accommodate actual front-facing stereo speakers rather than having full screen-body ratio and compromising on audio, sensors, camera and UI. This is why I love the RAZER phone. Yeah sure its big but it's function over form on this one. And that's the most important thing.

    • @ChiefYoshi

      Well, there is something called iPhone 8 and 8+ if you want bezels. It is a new phone with killer specs that outperforms all phones out there today in most areas. The headphone jack is pretty much dead but they do include an adapter. The W1 chip is really good and the battery life on Beats Solo 3 is really long.

    Oh man I remember this all like it was yesterday. It felt like the bezels were neverending for the longest time, then one summer a flurry of Chinese phones came out that just eliminated the bezels entirely, completely out of the blue. I remember the hype of mechanical front-facing cameras that would slide out the top of the phone, just these insane concept phones. Then the S8 and iPhone X came out, and in a sense that was the birth of the contemporary smartphone. Wild times.

      USB-C and Lightning are the future of mobile audio. Both offer much better sound quality than a 3.5 ever could with the poor DAC's inside of phones that power 3.5mm headphone jacks. Especially with external DACs. An external DAC on lightning or USB-C can offer audio similar to like a live studio recording or properly recorded concert.
      As well as bluetooth 5.0. Which is like across the board like massive improvements over 4.2 LE even. Better range, better connection, better quality all around.

    • @worldhello1234

      "USB-C and Lightning are the future of mobile audio. Both offer much better sound quality than a 3.5 ever could with the poor DAC's inside of phones that power 3.5mm headphone jacks." The future is not decided by you. There are really good headphone jacks out there and people might take the slight loses in quality over a lost adapter any day. Especially those that aren't Hifi enthusiasts.
      Bluetooth 5.0 is a different story. It is nice to have.

    Everyone was too busy asking how but nobody really asked why. Having bezels on the top and bottom gives you a place to actually hold the damn phone without touching the touch screen. Bezeless designs are a highly impractical for a very small gain in image size. And the fingerprint sensor on the front means you can look at your phone while it's lying on your desk without having to pick it up.

    • @patientestant
      @patientestant 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      That's my opinion too. What do you gain buy having a notch? It looks like only the time and battery status can be shown up there on the iphone. The small amount of screen gained is not really worth the awkward design. I like Samsungs designs for bezels. If they put the finger print reader on the screen that would be ideal. I prioritize almost every other aspect of a phone over the bezels, big, small, notch or not.

      That's true, but essential just wanted to accommodate the front facing camera and Apple literally had to put a a bunch of sensors in there to make the FaceID work, making their notch quite large. I'm just pissed at people who are just copying Apple blindly, it's like their company doesn't really have a design philosophy of it's own. They just wanna make their devices look similar to a popular device out there.

    I don't understand this... phones are becoming more and more unpractical, this whole bezel thing is just stupid in my opinion, you get so much diminishing returns to push that millimeter of screen more that you need to spend so much on technology, research and manufacturing that i don't see the point, all this will do is give you a bit more pixels to hold in hand. And that the thing hold... so many phones are now extremely difficult to hold, they are so thin and so big, everyone I see have protective/grip cases for their phone, not to mention battery life, I'm still rocking LG G4 and I don't see any need to upgrade at all... Oh yes i must buy phone without bezels because 1 millimeter of screen will make a difference, well it will in your wallet.

It just feels so good to watch videos or play games on it, while being much cheaper than the iPhone X. Another important upgrade for me in phones, is the camera. But my next upgrade will probably be depending on if the phone has a fingerprint reader underneath the screen or not (for convenience).

    To me it's simple, put a second display on the back that's 1/4 or 1/3 the phone, so people can use the rear camera for selfies and video calls. You could also use it as a secondary flash for selfies since a bigger light source produces softer light. You could even have a number count down if you are taking group shots. Plus there would be tons of 3rd party options for this. We just need to rethink why we need a decent selfie camera on the front when there are amazing cameras on the back.

      One could even think further and reduce said screen on the back to a tiny OLED display. With the current advancements in AI, it could show how many faces it detects on the viewfinder and whether any of them are cut off. We do have phones with wide angle lenses. I would personally love to have 2x2cm OLED screen on the back of my phone that doubles as an AOD and notification light.

    I'm not against 100% bezel-less, but please please don't make the smartphones any more gigantic. I like to see a phone the size of an iphone 4 again with todays latest specs(or even midrange i.e. sd600 line) and with at least 90 to 95% stbr. (of course keep the headphone jack with a good dac, decent batt and good ppi) (another bonus for dual front facing speakers and backmounted/side fingerprint sensor)

      It's kind of an oxymoron to say "Hey we introduced the notch to the phone to give you more display." I rather see it as introducing a notch to the display that wasn't there for decades, only to decrease a few millimeters of height from top of the phone, which is dumb.

      Glass half empty or glass half full. The notch is only ugly to those that see it as a glass half-empty. To the millions of others who bought the X, it looks beautiful. In fact, it wouldn't be Apple's #1 selling phone and #1 selling smartphone on the market if the notch bothered most people. Compare that to the Pixel 2, whose sales numbers are laughable in comparison to the iPhone X's sales, lol. Not to mention Google's lack of direction and brand confusion. (I.e. laughing at Apple for removing the headphone jack, then removing it themselves on the Pixel 2!). Android sheep will always be sheep.

      Well, taking things positive is a good thing. And Apple adopting it isn't really the issue here, it's more about others adopted it just because Apple did. This blind following idea is suppressing other creative ideas that the employing came up with, basically killing off creative ideas because these top company officials want their phones to look like iPhone or a Galaxy to boast sales and to attain short term benefits.
      @ElementalFluttography And iPhone X isn't Apple's #1 selling phone, it sold the highest in the Q4 2017, just like all other iPhones did before, compared to iPhone 7 the overall sales dropped.

      you know that manufacturers have to forecast the demand on consumers right? manufacturers cant just improve something if the consumers didnt want it. the profit to development and changeover cost ratio is too low. the notch is "popular" to manufacturers because it is easy to create that notch. just shrink the bezel and keep small fraction to keep the front camera and sensors. while its development cost is low, the consumers want it. so its because of the consumers who right now dont want that improved battery life, but rather a notch.. and bezeless

    To be honest I really like the look of the smaller notches. Not the huge shit like the iPhone X but stuff like the LG and OnePlus. It really makes you notice the tiny bezels to the side of it, and it can be integrated with cool features like a blacked-out notch bar that still has all the status bar icons lit up. It looks clean, and moves those out of the way for more screen real-estate.

    When looking at how far the Essential Ph-1 went to remove almost everything from the front screen, leaving just the speaker slit and camera, what are your thoughts on options to getting rid of the front facing camera entirely and implementing small rear displays that enable the use of your dedicated rear cameras - an example being the Meizu Pro 7. Also just wanted to mention that enabling the top speaker to have two different audio channels is genius optimization that every phone should take advantage of.

    Can we? Sure! But SHOULD we? On phones with less bezel, my clumsy hands end up hitting apps near the edge and turning them on. Annoying on many levels. I hate the battery drain, closing the app, and being reminded of a medical condition I can't control. Boo.

    • @KarlRamstedt
      @KarlRamstedt 6 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      Well, as long as the edges are properly square and not melting over the sides like Samsung does I'm fine with it. I like holding my phone by the sides, I don't like having to pay extra attention to not let my fingers slip from the sides to the screen itself.

      I don't want my phone to be harder to hold, if anything I want it to be easier to hold, because the screen sizes today require me to do quite a lot of shuffling to reach the entire screen one-handed. Making it harder to hold would only increase my chance of dropping it; no thanks..

    • @E50AK

      Having apps run in the background doesn't drain your battery, it uses your RAM, unless it is actually performing some background task which requires CPU time (like image processing, video rendering, etc.). Which won't be the case most times since it requires manual interaction to start these tasks. So actually killing your apps repetitively will drain more battery because when you reopen that app, it will use CPU time to move things from your external/secondary storage to the RAM. I would advise against doing that.

    • @TechieXP
      @TechieXP 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Really? How so? I have a phone with edged sides and I have not activated not one single app from it by accident. In fact, the apps don't even sit at the edge, making what you claim impossible.
      Also Samsung phones have a edge detection setting you can turn on to deal with such. But I've never needed to turn it on.
      Either you have fat fingers you can't control, or you have some cheap Chinese edge screen phone knockoff.
      Because the Galaxy is the only phone with an actual edge screen design and it has ways to prevent accidental touches.
