  • เผยแพร่เมื่อ 13 ส.ค. 2024
  • Shane van Gisbergen has captured the attention of NASCAR fans everywhere since he scored a major win in his Cup Series debut on the Chicago street course last July.
Now, after just two Xfinity Series starts, the V8 Supercars champion has shown he's up to the challenge of oval racing in America. Just how much better will he get as the year goes on? In this clip from PRN's Fast Talk, Doug Rice, Kyle Petty, Brad Gillie and Alexis Erickson recap SVG's third-place finish at Atlanta Motor Speedway and whether his speedway prowess will lead to bigger things in 2024.
Brad Gillie covered SVG's race at Atlanta and tells us what he heard from the team's radio communication and how quickly Shane van Gisbergen is picking up on oval racing and how much he has learned in just two oval starts in 2024. #NASCAR

As an Aussie. You're correct more and more are now watching Nascar to see his progress.
Let's not forget Shane is actually a Kiwi. So not only are the Australian's watching but so are the New Zealander's to see his progress.

In 2021 Shane broke his collar bone just before the season started and with practically one arm beat the entire field. He won the first 6 races of the season!!! Shane is possibly the most adaptive driver on the planet. I could literally see him getting better lap by lap. Trust me he will bank every bit of info and learn how every driver reacts. It won't be long before he starts running up front. Definitely by mid season.

Was impressive to watch him come from 17th on the grid to winning that race busted up and when they all pretty much thought he would do maybe a few laps at best in practice then sit out the weekend only to find out when getting checked out before the race that the doc,s only just noticed he also had broken ribs the bloody machine, he usaly at his best when people count him out or he,s up against it🇳🇿💪

Yes, Shane is definitely focused on driving to drive through that type of pain ,,, remembering back then the cars had the adjustable sway bars too,,,, no where to hide from the pain,,,, however if you look at his driving different types of vehicles,,,, look at the recent rally stuff,,,, he can drive anything

And at the NZGP I think that same year. driving an open wheeler for i think his first time. he accidentally set the fire extinguisher off in his car and had to start from pit lane dead last. He made his way through the field and won with a few laps to spare. the bloke just picks up any form of motorsport so fast. just takes in all the info he can.

You’ve already got hundreds of thousands of fans in Australia and New Zealand watching because of Shane. In fact, the XFinity series is now broadcast live in both of those countries because of his success in Chicago and now racing there full time.
As far as his success goes, I honestly think he’s not even really pushing on ovals yet, he’s just biding his time and learning. Once he feels comfortable then we’ll get to see how good he is. He did the same in the Chicago race - bided his time learning the car and track and when it was time to go he went through the pack like a dose of salts. 😂

I noticed early in the race when he was running up front, things were starting to look dicey so he bailed out to avoid a wreck. I was keen to see how he would go later in the race in heavy traffic. 3rd place answered my question. If you want to see The Shane we know go back a few years and watch him dicing with his old boss, Jamie Whincup and Scott McLaughlin in v8 Supercars. The guy can drive!

He unlike many US Drivers has done a lot of different types of racing including Rally cars. He has done about 6 oval races all up two on dirt the rest ARCA and Infinity. Emphasis should be fans in Australia and NZ are following the athlete not the sport. This was born put when Marcos left NASCAR interest died in Australia.
That said I think they should run WOO or High Limit on the many small clay ovals in the UK and general European tracks. A real opportunity missed for US Autosport🎉😂

Being a NASCAR fan in NZ has been pretty tough over the years, not a lot of people understand the intricacies of the sport (even amongst motorsport enthusiasts) and could be quite condescending when you mention you are a fan (aLl tHeY dO iS gO lEfT!, etc...) with Shane being in the Xfinity series I think a lot more kiwis will start watching and realise how great the racing really is! Yet another Aussie here.
SVG has a racing brain. Some people visualize Maths in their brain. Some people see their world through their art. I can look at an off road challenge and just, without being to explain it, see the right line for my vehicle.
SVG just computes differently. Differently to us mere mortals, but different to many racing drivers in many disciplines. He picked up rallying in the Australian Rally Championship ion an instant. He has done GT racing on the international stage. He just has that racing brain.
His success is surprising to anyone, except to those of us who have seen him race before.

Every micro second, he is absorbing and processing vast amounts of data about the car, the race, his opposition, the track, the conditions... He then uses that information to make incremental changes to his driving style as the race progresses. He has the ability to feel the most subtle changes in his car's performance, and adapt accordingly.
Don't be surprised to see him fighting for the championship THIS YEAR.

🇦🇺Great to hear that Shane is being recognised already in the USA, especially in some high level series that most drivers here in Australia would normally only dream about getting a start in. I personally followed Shane’s rise in our premier V8 Supercar series over here and when he took off to race in the USA I must admit it seemed like another great driver had been lured by the big time, but for me I always knew Shane was something special. I was a big fan of Marcus Ambrose when he dominated V8 Supercar race after race here but when he decided to try on NASCAR it seemed like a great challenge but as you’ve seen he hasn’t really risen to any great heights. On the other hand, I’ll back your question on whether SVG can be the next big thing in NASCAR as he appears to be one of those once in a generation talents that can get in pretty much any race car and not only learn quickly but is prepared to listen and do what ever it takes. He’s a natural talent and unique in his ability to understand race circuits, car dynamics and the ability to read what others are doing. I think you guys have only just seen the tip of Shane’s iceberg and my call even at this very early stage is that if he can stay fit and focused he’ll become one of the greatest you’ve ever seen, and you guys raised a great point in it could be hugely beneficial for Motorsport in general on the world stage as we head into a whole new era of motor racing. Love your channel guys 😎🇦🇺🏁

    The guys a wheelman.
When he wasnt racing Supercars, He was in a Rally Car and even grabbed a podium at the World Championship round, when hes not doing that he's jumping into a Sprintcar on Dirt ovals, then he goes and wins the NZ grand prix in an open wheeler that was 3 sizes too small for him. Then goes off to various 24 hour races around the world.
For giggleson his weekends off he goes drift racing or is on quads.
He likes to keep testing himself in different disciplines.
He will work away at something new like a dog with a bone until hes happy with himself.
Hes not arrogant and doesnt go around big noting himself and admits hes on a steep learning curve.
But Hes happy to learn, absorb things, self criticise when need be and be patient.
    Hes going to go ok.
At some point the bubble is going to burst and he will have a rough weekend. But he will absolutely dissect and analyze it and He wont make that same mistake again.

Gizzy is on a steep learning curve especially racing on the left hand side on a banked circuit. It will take him time to get his head around all the changes but he is a good driver and will adapt quicker than most people think. It won't be until the 2025 season before we see Gizzy making a big move in Nascar Xfinity Series.

SVG is a talent monster. That guy has the ability and talent to drive the wheels off anything, and the attitude to do it- so long as he fits in it. His only problem is his size so open wheelers are out. Yes he won the NZ GP, but he didn't fit in a generous car very well. But his interest and therefore desire is up with NASCAR so stand back- and watch.

SVG is the nost adaptable driver on the planet. The fact he won supercars in 2016 and the Blancpan Endurence championship in europe in the same year. The fact he has been on the podium of WRC2, the xfinity seriers of the rally world. Hes won in sprintcars, got good results in drifting, is stupidly fast in sim racing. Its of zero surprise he is doing this in nascar. Maybe doing this well this soon but still.
Now SVG is not the type of personality who can transcend the sport itself, hes not the type whos going to pull no racing fans into racing. What he is, hes the driver who can pull Supercars fans, Sportscar fans, indycar fans into watching nascar. Those who already love the sport but not nascar and getting them to watch

Always easier on his tyres than his immediate competitors in Australian V8 Supercars, and also a little easier on fuel, which probably helped the rise on the weekend from 11th with a few laps to go to 3rd when other top 10 runners were running out of gas. He can drive the wheels off anything he jumps in, so that adaptability will serve him well.

Well it has evolved quite a bit over the past 10 years or so to a place where many of us old school fans do not like. The stage racing is idiotic and is purely a ploy to falsely manufacture closer racing. NASCAR is so terrified of putting on snooze fest races that they put on snooze fest races. The laps are divided up into say 60 or so lap stages where they throw the yellow and wad the entire field back together. Most all the fuel mileage strategy of the past is non existent and the endurance aspect of the sport has been mostly erased too. One interesting thing left in NASCAR is the variety of tracks they go to. Giant superspeedways one week, half mile fender banging short track the next, and then a road course the week after that. Probably still doesn't tell you much, but that's a basic rundown. Here's a few tracks you do not want to miss: Bristol, Dover, Martinsville, Charlotte, COTA and probably the Chicago street race again where your boy is likely to be a monster all over again.

I don’t know. Ambrose’s biggest Achilles heel was Mike and a Half tracks, he was a god at Road Courses, good at Speedways, and criminally underrated at Short Tracks. If SVG can figure out the cookie cutters, he’ll be fine.

It'll be interestingto see how he does at the next few tracks. There's some variety and they're tracks that are much more "normal" for the series. If you can't run well at tracks like Vegas or Phoenix, you can't win titles in this sport. It's that simple. It's his first time there, so I don't expect top 5s, but if he can run around 15th all day and show a improvement throughout the race, that'll be a great sign. Remember that the last driver to really come from another series like this and have success was Tony Stewart who had oval experience, but he didn't win in Xfinity early and it took him about 2/3 of his first Cup season to get a win. I bring up up because although they drove different cars, I feel like that's more the caliber of driver SVG should be compared to, considering his experience in different cars and the success he's had up to this point.

He was in eighth, and he had fuel, because his team made the right strategy to come and pit and get some more fuel, just like every other team had the opportunity to do so, but not every team did. First start that shows that he had speed, because it was just in the top 10, and he has the smarts to listen to his crew chief. When they tell him he should come in for a dash of fuel. Then had to speed to get around the guy that was in front of him after the others dropped out in a dash for the Line and he got third. You can make as many excuses as you want, but it won’t change the fact that he still got third.
