Hiatal Hernia & What They Can Cause. My Personal Symptoms.

  • Hiatal Hernia: A pertrusion of part of the stomach through the diaphragm into your chest cavity. This can cause a slew of symptoms such as,
    -Shortness of Breath
    -Heartburn
    -GERD
    -LPR
    -Sternum Pain
    -Back Pain
    -Neck Pain
    -Dizziness
    -Headaches
    -Heart Palpitations
    -Panick/Anxiety Attacks
    -Pressure in The Chest
This is something a lot of traditional medicine doctors do not have a great grasp on. I've met many others having doctors simply dismiss them and tell them their hiatal hernia can't cause any problems, I'm here to express that it can and that we need to be our own advocate,
    Thank you.

I have been dealing with bloating and sour stomach since my 20's I am 48 now. Didn't find out that this was my issue and pretty severe at this point, until I started the process for bariatric weight loss surgery. Thankfully, they can repair it at the same time as my vertical sleeve gastrectomy. Also found out that being overweight can push the stomach up through the diaphragm. I was also a powelifter for about 5 years. Didn't know that may have contributed to the issue.
All these years I have been hand waved away with IBS, stress/anxiety, poor eating habits (which my surgeon looked at my food journal and said I'm eating the right things just quantity is my issue) I am not a big processed food eater, unless I am somewhere I cannot prepare my own either same day or in advance. Like a theme park vacation for example
Anywho, all that to say it's has been a long time to proper diagnosis and I will be thrilled to not have the awful symptoms anymore.

I was diagnosed with a hiatal hernia 25 years ago. I have suffered from severe acid reflux over the years until I stopped eating gluten, sugar, and dairy last year. I changed my diet when I began having difficulty taking deep breaths, heart palpitations, and chest pain out of the blue last June. I went to the ER 5 times in 3 mos thinking I was having a heart attack but I have had a full workup including an echocardiogram and pulmonary function tests that show my heart and lungs are healthy, yet my symptoms persist. I was dismissed as having an anxiety issue and referred to a psychiatrist for medication which I refuse to take. It is my symptoms that cause me to have anxiety. Not the other way around. I now believe the symptoms are from my hiatal hernia and I am going to see my doctor and ask for a GI consult for possible surgery to repair the hernia because these symptoms are very bothersome. Great video. Thank you for sharing your experience. It helps others.

I have the same experiences. I've had Tachycardia as well as a slower heavier geart rate. Definitely scary when it happens. I've had panic attacks at night and during the day. The sternum pain and overall cheat pain is also a common ailment. I hope your doing better, I have come across a great book called the Hiatal Hernia Syndrom. It's been the greatest resource I have on explaining what's going on.

Sees like everybody is having the same issues with doctors etc it's treated more as a mental health problem than a physical one.
I'm amazed how many side affects this hiatus hernia can cause, I've had mine for 7 years and have had nothing but trouble from reflux, shortness of breath, back pain.
Pleading with doctors for help, but they do the all bloods and the scans and tell you everything is normal????

Heath palpitations + panic attacks are more of anxiety and psychological problems.
Yes, of course hiatal hernia causes pressure in the diaphragm, you sometimes have hard time to breathe especially when you try deep belly breathing. It can cause gerd too.
But now who can say: if all these problems are caused by anxiety or gerd, or hiatal hernia? What is the main target? No one really knows.

I get PVCS, fatigue, nausea, burping, chest pain, reflux, dry mouth, indigestion.can’t sit down. Can’t sleep. Doctor says I have anxiety. Well because of this now I do. Is this my life now? Omg

      How can exercise make that?
If exercising is strengthening ur core and etc.
Basically if you are doing weights, you should also do stretches before and after ur workout. + work on your posture.
Usually the cause of this is
Stress (nerves "burning out syndrome") or basically ur poor posture.

How are you doing after 2 years plus living with this annoying condition? I'm an old chap (62) from England. I've been a self-employed gardener this last half of my working life...digging and bending and shovelling etc for 25 years! I'm quite certain I too have steadily joined "the Hiatus Hernia club"! (It's such a common condition). But I'm absolutely useless at going to my GP for a check-up. I'm far too chicken! I've already had the common ("down below"!) Inguinal hernias fixed twice. I see you're quite a slim young fellow, like my skinny self and I have a theory that presumably, if you have a shallower chest cavity, like me, any physical intrusion into that space by the Stomach is probably going to be more impactful on the Heart and Lungs. And you may also feel the effects of that intrusion more easily, maybe also because there's less fat around those organs & the nerves. If there's less space up there above the Diaphragm, they'll be more compressed by the Stomach, surely? As you say, most mainstream doctors don't seem to have received training in these other life-limiting, very irritating & sometimes alarming symptoms of a Hiatus hernia. Not for nothing do some call it "The Great Mimic"!
