First time I saw this I was flabbergasted. The original ending was supposed to be they just arrested John Doe but Brad Pitt insisted on shooting him, glad he did. One of the best endings to a movie I ever seen. (well, not the best, but you know) Perfectly executed.
Yep. Perfect portrayal of a "damned if you do damned if you don't" situation. Still, I cannot fathom how anyone - not even the most tender butterfly in the world - could NOT shoot him at that moment. That's John Doe's diabolical genius after all - he knew his "win" was the only outcome. Had they filmed the original ending, Se7en just might have become another semi-remembered mediocre film starring wasted talent.
@@dogsmusicbookstravelscience Nah. This is definitely the superior ending, but the movie is great regardless. And wasted talent? You’re talking about three of the most celebrated actors ever, even though Spacey is now persona non grata.
The fact that the phrase, "What's in the box?", is now synonymous with shock and horror is a testament to the power of great filmmaking. Yeah, this one shook me at the theater. The moment it started I knew I was in for a ride.👍🏽👍🏽
This ending was considered to be a "bad" ending to a film (a poll from either Total Film or Empire Magazine in the 90s) which has been completely shot down (no pun intended). For me it's one of the best in film history and these reactions back that up.
@@DW.Strangeman There’s no way any sane person said this was a bad ending. Maybe they meant endings where the bad guy wins, or disturbing endings. Spacey is involved in two of the greatest endings to movies in history. This and The Usual Suspects are top five endings of all time.
If it were similar tone and had all or most of the crew, I wouldn't mind a sequel. It would need to acknowledge this obviously. But, it would most likely end up like the Saw series and become gore porn over story. 😞
@chrisbirch4150 the case and murders were reported on. So, it's a copy cat influenced and with the same beliefs as John Doe and he tries to continue his work. Have Morgan Freeman act as a sort of consultant to the detectives for a scene or 2. But like I said, it'll just end up gore porn. :-/
A deshelved, depressed, and doentrodden, ex prisoner david mills, now a pi at the end of his career (like somerset was) is brought into a case of copycat killer that wants him to relive it all again, id watch that!

David Fincher is an absolute GENIUS!! The way box flaps in the wind and Morgan Freeman's reaction is priceless. One of the best movies ever!! No hyperbole, straight facts
I honestly found that a very harrowing line. And Freeman delivers it beautifully - A veteran cop who is scarcely if ever fazed saying that with such trepidation and anxiousness.. Well done.
I think it’s what jars him into sticking around. Mills challenged him into not being so cynical and bleak, and seeing Mills destroyed in front of him showed him just how important it was to keep going.
One of the things that I’ve heard about this movie that I applaud David Fincher on (other than a superbly done movie) is the fact that they kept Kevin Spacey off all marketing. Made sure he wasn’t on anything just so it wouldn’t give away who John Doe was. I wish more movies would do things like that now.
The genius of this scene is that everyone knows what is in the box but you fight your subconscious to believe it, placing you in David's role. I've also always loved the wording that is used by Somerset to confirm the truth. If you write it as "Yes, it's true." it just falls flat, but adding that slight bit of "shop talk" makes it hit home.
Obviously not a newsflash that here you have 3 of the finest actors alive. But where Brad Pitt went to find Mills in this scene, to me, is unreal. The little extra he gives once he learns Tracy was pregnant makes this a knee buckler of a scene for me. Instant tears. This scene still shakes me to my core today. Fincher really put that work in on this film.
Absolutely. “She begged for her life, detective. She begged for her life and the life of the baby inside of her.” Fincher makes the audience (and David) imagine what the last moments of Tracy’s life must have been like. It’s more horrifying in our imagination than anything he could have portrayed on screen. It’s masterful in its restraint.
One of the best endings to a movie. Not many movies end where the bad guy actually wins and this movie executed it perfectly. The music, the split second of the image of Tracy, to Mills killing John Doe. From beginning to end this movie was great.
As a younger kid, growing up in the 90's, this scene was haunting. You had not seen many scenes that relatable, not some happy ending, but a REAL ending based on human emotion.
A suggestion for you, my friend: the movie is Mystic River, the scene when Sean Penn's character finds out his daughter is dead. That's a powerful one.
I've always thought another interesting twist ending would have been if right after Sommeset says, "If you kill him, he will win", David turns the gun onto himself and kills himself, keeping John from winning

Fun Fact: David Fincher really wanted Denzel Washington for that role. He turned it down. He said that's the biggest regret of his life.

Nonsense. His biggest regret was going to that Puffy party.
