- Welcome to our first-time watching as we react to Se7en (1995). This movie got dark quick! It was truly a spine-chilling experience. This is one of David Fincher's most iconic thrillers, filled with mystery, suspense, and a dark exploration of the seven deadly sins.
"Se7en" follows detectives Somerset and Mills, played by Morgan Freeman and Brad Pitt, as they investigate a series of gruesome murders inspired by the seven deadly sins. Brad Pitt delivered a phenomenal performance especially towards the end of the film and we got to see Morgan Freeman play a more reserved character than what we are used from him. Great acting all around!
The "What's in the box?" scene truly messed us up. We knew something was horribly wrong. Kevin Spacey as John Doe was in the film for a short time but definitely left a lasting impression.
The cinematography in this was fantastic! The film had this grungy and dark tone that made everything feel much more grounded.

Nothing could prepare us for how this film was gonna end. This movie got progressively dark and by the end of it we were left with a pit in our stomachs! I think it's still one of the top 100 most memorable movie lines ever.
Not sure I'd use the word "elegant", but it's a fantastic movie nonetheless.

From the beginning the serial killer knew he would be the last to die. All he had to do was pick the right detective with enough wrath to make it happen. The only one of his murders that doesn't fit the order, is Mills' wife. She is the only victim with no connection to one of the sins.
Please please please, watch The Game also by David Fincher. It is a great movie, but most people go by and miss that gem. You won't regret it !

Fun fact.
The ending scenes initially included some rather more detailed looks at Gwyneth Paltrows head in the box - but Fincher couldnt push it through with getting dangerously close to an even harsher PG rating.. and the production company just wasnt having it, and killed it.
However.. the head survived the indignity of being cut from the film - and would later go on to make its first, and only, appearance in the movie "Contagion" (2011) - where Paltrow starred opposite Matt Damon.

Looking back at this film, you notice so many things. Morgan Freeman's character was right, Mills wasn't ready for this case. Note: you guys DID realize that he Mills found out about the baby when John Do e told him, right?
there's an alternate ending storyboard that was on the Blu-ray extra or whatever but it's on TH-cam and it shows the ending is basically the same except that Somerset kills John Doe before mills can therefore he doesn't win
"If we catch John Doe and he turns out to be the Devil, I mean he is Satan himself...that might live up to our expectations. But...he's not the Devil, he's just a man."

I watched this in the movie theater when this was released and I fell asleep partway through, due to having worked a long day, and watching the movie very late at night. Luckily my gf woke me up and I got to see the ending. LOL
As always a great reaction, now you definitely have to watch Zodiac, perhaps Fincher's best movie in the thriller genre. The movie is also based on a true story.
I worked in a movie theater when this was released, and I'll never forget how quiet and upset audiences were at that ending. People left the theater like they were leaving a funeral. But just like John Doe said of his acts, this movie became studied and discussed and they couldn't deny the significance of what they saw.
Jup, Remember this very well. We were a group of students from our dorm at the movie theater. On the way out and home in the bus, we were quiet in a WTF did we just watch kind of way.
Sounds like a bunch of think skinned ppl lol. I was like “Daaaaamn” lol. Reminds me of “Sausage Party” in theaters wheree dumbasses brought their kids and got so mad when the movie started lmao.
I saw this with a group. Believe me, if I'd driven myself, I wouldn't have gotten past the first half-hour.
Yeah, I felt the same way leaving the theater. I was stunned. I had trouble sleeping for days after watching this.
My sister went and saw this with her best friend and during the final scene said they were holding on to each other freaking out
The line "Jodi Foster told me to do it." Is a reference to "John Hinkley Jr." Who attempted to assassinate Ronald Regan back in the 80's. When caught, he said he was doing it because he was in love with Jodi Foster and was trying to impress her.

@@stevehope4572 You can't be ready for John Doe, but you can be ready to protect yourself. Doe only knew who Mills was because in his anger, Mills literally spelled out his name to him. That's why he chose Mills to be Wrath.
To me one of the saddest and most overlooked parts of this movie,is that Somerset never got the retirement he wanted. At the end he says he’ll “be around”… he isn’t going to go off into the sunset, he be around to keep an eye on what happens to Mills, and likely he feels too worn down by all he’s seen to feel he can enjoy that kind of retirement now. Sad. The case ruined both of them.
I'd like to believe Somerset got a perspective adjustment from the whole experience and will, perhaps, have a bit of extra motivation and energy by being close to Mills.
He also refrained from admitting the world was not worth saving. Never met a guy like Spacey''s character but I've felt some bad people.
The mid to late 90's was such an exciting time for unique movies and originality.
Today not so much but hopefully we'll get another period like that soon

Agreed! I think Tarantino helped a LOT to bring that on, but mainly I think it was a reaction to the constant dim action flicks in the 80s with no real chars or plot. I sadly think it won't happen again, it requires some intelligence in the audience, that is gone for good!
There are plenty of unique movies still coming out. You just don't realize because there are so many more mediocre and forgettable movies coming at the same time. Look back a decade or two.. the good movies remain relevant.
2000s: The Departed, No country For Old Men, Memento, Pan's Labyrinth, 28 Days Later, Lost In Translation..
2010s: Snowpiercer, Edge of Tomorrow, Fury Road, Arrival, Whiplash, Call Me By Your Name, The Grand Budapest Hotel...

The "Lust" scene still mortfies me. And we didn't even see it happening. Mad props to the acting coming from the traumatized guy. You can actually see and feel he saw something f***ed up. It helps us visualize it.
Always thought that was a great performance. Fun fact he has a bit part about half way thru saving private Ryan as he tells Hanks about the plane that he was on that crashed with a high ranking officer
He's a great character actor by the name of Leland Orser. He's really talented.
Seriously that guy haunts me more than anything else in this movie. The guy steals the movie in a couple minutes.
Leland Orser's (the actor who portrayed this character) performance IMO absolutely cements this film's terror. In my opinion, the viewer is shocked by the murders and what is driving the killer, BUT it's not "real" because we never see the killings, and never see any victim alive until this character. And his performance is truly outstanding.
He's really an underrated actor. Great in "The Bone Collector"

The yellow covered books are “cliffs notes.” They were a shortened version of the original works we students used as a “cheat sheet” to do book reports, etc. before the internet. It highlights Pitt’s characters young, cutting corners way of doing things vs. Freeman’s character’s seasoned way of referring to the original texts and works of art.
Those cliff notes on Shakespeare saved my ass in English class lol

Not really. Believe it or not most people just did the work.
Years ago, the company I worked for as a development exec hired SE7EN writer Andy Walker to adapt a book for them. We had read the script for SE7EN as a writing sample; it was under option by another company at the time. In the process I got to know Andy well, and we are friends to this day.
During that time I had lunch with an executive who worked for another producer. He asked if I’d read anything great recently. I mentioned I was working with a writer who’d written the best script I’d ever read - SE7EN. He asked me to send it over. As expected, the exec flipped for it… and thus began the machinations to get the rights for his boss. And two years later, his boss wound up producing SE7EN.
The fact that I can claim even the smallest link in the chain of events that brought that movie to the big screen means I can die a happy man.
True story.

Sommerset was reading the real books. Mills was reading the Cliff’s Notes summaries. It was showing their contrast in understanding and effort. Sommerset was intelligent and thorough. Mills had no clue and was always trying to take shortcuts.

What hits me like a sledgehammer is that Mills is only selected to be Wrath because of how he treated Doe in his cameraman disguise, and that he literally spelled out his name for him while he did it. Doe read him like a book.

@@indianikitlathon8095Like he said in the movie: he hadn’t planned on them finding his hideout. When they did he had to ramp up stuff and move faster, basically starting to improvise a little bit.
When this movie was released, Kevin Spacey went to great lengths to make sure nobody knew he was in the movie prior to watching it since it was the same year that The Usual Suspects was released (watch it and you'll understand). They wanted to keep the surprise.
Glad they did! He is not in it for long but he sure does leave an impression!

the other stuff aside.. kevin spacey is a brilliant actor... and i highly recommend watching "american beauty" which is his masterpiece... for some reason there isnt many reactions to that movie... its one of the best movies of the 90s.. oscar winning too etc

The movie made less than 25 million in the US, A bit over 66 world wide. Seven made over 300 million. TUS didn't make him known, Seven did.

Somehow watched this when I was entirely too young for it. Left me traumatised, for sure. 👀

Same. I was 13 and theatre hopped into this. Was the last movie that gave me nightmares.
I had youngish parents that didn't pay much attention to what they were watching with us kids. I was 10 when they first rented a clockwork orange. I was 6 when they rented the fly. Kind of desensitizes you quickly to cinema.
If you haven't seen it, I highly recommend 1993's Primal Fear with Edward Norton, Laura Linney, Richard Gear, Andre Braugher and several other greats. I think you guys would love it.

Best psychological thriller ever. The guy that owned the establishment where the prostitute was stabbed to death is also Fun boy in The Crow and he was the one who accidentally shot Brandon Lee. Tragic story for father and son.
3:19 Anticipated something "cleaner"? SURPRISE! This, along with "8mm" w/ Nicholas Cage are two of the most disturbing mass produced for a wide audience that I've ever seen!

After all this time, this movie still hits like a sledge hammer. Everything about this film was superbly done. I remember when it first came out and it was devastating to see it in the theater. So glad you reacted to this one.
The beginning intro scene was a game changer when it came to giving the viewers a feel of what the movie is going to be like. Many many films after this movie was released emulated that style of intro.
David Fincher has always worked with some amazing cinematographers, and Darius Khondji did a spectacular job with this film.
I love David Fincher movies. He knows how to make visually stunning and emotionally intense movies. Another great one is «Gone Girl». I would love to see your reaction to it. Suggestion two: «The Girl gwith the Dragon Tattoo». I hope, you put them on the list and let your Patreons vote for it.
I am still incredibly disappointed they never continued the "Girl with a Dragon Tattoo" series. That being said, first and only installment is amazing.
Just watch the original trilogy. Holds up well. Not Fincher but imo much better than the remakes.

Unfortunately yes they would. It’s super easy to get a biased jury that hates cops or the defendant beforehand. The BS Trump defamation case is a shining example due to someone being found "guilty" even with no evidence whatsoever.

The reason John Doe didnt kill Mills when he had the gun to his head is ..when he was pretending to be the photographer, he saw who the hothead was ..& right there.. he chose mills to become Wrath .

This was the VERY FIRST MOVIE I SAW where the "bad guy" wins. Every movie before it had that familiar, archetypal, good triumphs over evil theme to them and then when I watched SE7EN for the first time...just like Jon Doe said; it hit me like a sledgehammer. Fantastic movie!
I can't believe that this film is almost 30 years old. Im 53 and im still respectfully disturbed by this beautiful work. I wasn't in a "good space" to watch this reaction when it dropped a week ago. But I'm here for it today. Great reaction.👏🏾
Pitt’s character was reckless, arrogant & impulsive. He dragged his wife & dogs to this awful flat in this violent city to satisfy his own ‘Saviour Complex’ & ego. His downfall as *Wrath* was inevitable as soon as John Doe (correctly) clocked his lack of emotional control. Great film 7️⃣
there was one part of the movei that tickled me...when they first arrive at the finale locale. Mills says "What ya got?" then somerset was like "Dead dog"...and the killer says "i didn't do that"

I have a feeling that Mills wouldn't be prosecuted and/or the defense attorney that defended John Doe would also defend Mills pro bono. But no matter the outcome Somerset would help look after Mills, while Mills would live with regret for the rest of his life since you can't get another high school sweetheart.

Se7en is one of the darkest criminal movies I ever watched, and yes, it's truly haunting and dark. It's so enjoyable to see Brad grow as an investigator and Morgan get a little lighter in his behavior throughout the movie, to become this iconic and great team. Both actors delivered incredible performances. Se7en still is one of my favorite movies of all times.
I'd love to see you guys react to The Last Samurai (Tom Cruise, Ken Watanabe). Truly a masterpiece !
The Ninth Door (Johnny Depp) is also a great choice if you're into investigations, especially having some kind of religious/esoteric background.

I saw this in a theater and when the delivery guy takes out the box from the van, people were groaning "oh no!" because we all knew it was going to be bad. Never had a movie audience do that since.

Watching young reactors not recognize “Cliff’s Notes” still cracks me up.
In virtually every reaction I have seen of this movie, no one seems to connect the last two sins - envy and wrath. Mills and John Doe were Wrath and Envy, respectively, And virtually no one I have seen reacting to this movie have seen this conclusion plainly. I have seen reactors who have asked at the end of the movie “Where are the last two sins?”, not realizing that the last two victims of the sins were Mills and John Doe. It’s refreshing that the two of you caught this. Great appreciation for this masterful film.
If you look for just trust ash's channel they got it too. Hannah is very smart and she's really good at catching details in movies.
Literally the only murder we see on-screen is Mills shooting John Doe at the end and it's still one of the most disturbing films ever made. The violence is implied, not shown. Surprisingly, even Texas Chainsaw Massacre understands that logic. And so does Silence of the Lambs.
That's very true, there are many ways to disturb/haunt the audience without gore - and it's always such a thrill when a movie nails it!!
"Jodie Foster told me to do it" sounded random and made you laugh, but it is a reference of the man (Hinkley) who shot President Regan. He did it because he wanted to impress her and get her attention.
I will never forget when this movie went uncessored and you could actually see the head in the box in a plastic bag left me scared up to this day lol
I recall seeing this back in the movies and it was my girlfriend who commented on the muted sounds… the rain… the voices a little lost in background. The muted colors… I see this as a representation of the unimportance of the individuals on screen rather how everything gets drowned out due to the banilty of everyday life. Thus it helps establish the underlying messsge about society in its neverending babble of humanity. The best and the very worst of us. Life in the midst of chaos… just like the metronome brining some structure into an unstructured world.
one of my all time favorites ever! everyone loves fight club but se7en is the real deal.

I watched this when I was 18 I think, on video, on my own finishing at about 1:30am. The tape ran to the end, rewound and ejected, leaving the screen showing white noise. And still I sat there, unable to move. It creeped me out to my very core and I couldn't shut down my brain for the rest of the night, rethinking the plot over and over.
A truly epic movie from a golden period, when the likes of Fincher, Tarantino, Darabont and others were joining more established directors to produce a string of thought provoking movies.
I don't know about the rest of your decisions in life, but when you two decided to start this channel - oh, what a good decision you made.🙂 I enjoy your reactions, your personalities and learning from you about cinematography in general. As for this film...I am an older generation...imagine an era without the Internet, social networks, etc.., you could see the trailer for this film in the cinema, meet someone who has seen it and who just told you " Oh, you need to watch that, oh yeah!", you knew it was Fincher, you knew Pitt and Freeman were in it...and that was it. And you went to the cinema. I remember the moment when I walked out of the cinema into the street. Deeply shaken. The streets and people looked different. Couple of days.
The last sentences in the movie, a quote by E. Hemingway, determined a lot of things in my life. I needed them then, as a young social worker. And I reach for them even today, when I'm not so young anymore. Keep up your work, thank you for it.🙂👍

Saw this in the theater in NYC when it first came out. When the movie ended the audience just sat there, so quiet, and nobody moved for the longest time. Everyone was just stunned…

In the scene where BP jumps and lands against the garbage truck, he really broke his arm. Even though his arm was broke, he never broke character. That's dedication to your job .
Real dedication is tearing your Achilles tendon on the set of Troy whilst playing Achilles. Brad is super committed.
You can view this entire movie as a parallel to Dante's Inferno. Mils is Dante, Somerset is Virgil, and they're going on a journey through Hell's 7 levels until they meet the Devil at the end. Tracy could also stand in for Beatrice. Alternatively, and in a more twisted sense, Somerset is Dante and John Doe is Virgil, guiding him through Hell with his murders. Somerset has lost his faith and is wandering through the "dark woods" of the city, and by the end has regained at least some of that faith, concluding that the world is worth fighting for, even if it isn't so fine a place. There's also a smattering of Paradise Lost in how John sees himself as a martyr despite the things he's done, and how Mills felt the loss of goodness (his optimism and Tracy) and fell from grace.
The argument could also be made that John Doe is Dante passing judgment on others and doling out his “divine justice” much like Dante does by placing real people from his life throughout Inferno and Purgatorio (even some who hadn’t died yet).
Have you guys ever seen mindhunter? Directed by David fincher also but it's a TV series that is based on the psychology of serial killers focusing on the likes of Ed Kemper , Richard spec and how they started profiling serial killers at Quantico
David Fincher had to FIGHT to get the ending he wanted. The studio originally wanted a happy ending that would've made the movie less memorable, but Morgan Freeman and Brad Pitt threatened to resign if they didn't go with Fincher's ending.
David Fincher has always gotten a certain level of resistance from the studios. From keeping a line in Fight Club to this! Glad he got his way!
This was the original script and was given to Brad Pitt and Morgan Freeman by accident 😆 they weren't supposed to see the happy ending screenplay. Then they refused to the other to do it. This movie is such a classic! Freaked me out as a kid lol

This is my first comment on your channel, I never thought it was so interesting to see other people's reactions to a movie I've already seen and loved. I want to say thank you for noticing the "similarity" of Matt Reeves' Batman to Seven, personally I couldn't finish watching it because Fincher is my favorite director and Seven is my favorite movie, and simply transferring some of the external techniques to the hero's tale doesn't work. But everything about "Seven" is great -- the dialog, the cameraman Darius Khondji, the lighting, the soundtrack, there are entire videos on TH-cam devoted to the framing of one of the scenes in "Seven," so simply put -- congratulations on the fact that you happened to watch a masterpiece. I think it is an interesting choice that almost all of the film is during the night, being dark. But the dark ending is in bright sunshine.
I've watched the ending many times knowing what is going to happen but the look on Brad's face always gets to me
Concerning the lighting, at the end of the movie when Ari said “Now the sun is shining!” That was intentional. The sun shining meant they were in the final enlightenment stage, where everything is coming to its conclusion. Before, the police was in the dark about what was happening. However, the head in the box and Pitt killing Spacey brought the killer’s ultimate plan into the light.

I will never forget walking out of the theatre after watching this when it first came out. I have never seen a quieter exit for a full theater. people were visibly shaken.
Remember watching that at the cinema & all the hushed realisations that Gwyneth’s head was in the box! 😮

*this movie started single-handedly a serial killer hype in cinema history. i remember as a teenager the girls who saw the movie were scared to walk home alone in the evening. BTW the moment i saw the batman i noticed how they stole from seven*
This film is terrifying in that sense! Seeing how disturbing the crime scenes were no wonder people were scared after watching this.
When this movie came out, it was so different from anything else, I went back and saw it two more times.

Meanwhile, since you're going down the Brad-Pitt-in-the-90s rabbit hole, I HIGHLY recommend watching Sleepers. It's a star-studded cast, but not a lot of people have reviewed (or watched) it because of the heavy subject matter. But it's my far my favorite Brad Pitt character.

If you really like detective films, I highly recommend "The Bone Collector (1999)" with Denzel Washington and Angelina Jolie. It's not as epic as Seven but still, very interesting concept and from what I saw, not very popular on TH-cam reaction channels.
I think you missed the fact that Mill's copies of the books are high school level Cliff notes, basically the "... For Dummies" books of their time. He's reading them whilst Somerset is at the library all night. 😁
Yea, they missed a bit of that subtext. Tractor pulls, Serpico, Cliff notes... Mills is a midwesterner who married the prom queen and has a head full of hero cop action movies. He was incredibly naive and has a fairy tale view of the world. He was not ready.
David Finscher is a master. All of his films are impeccable. They're all worth your time. Check out Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.
I would also recommend The Bone Collector with Denzel Washington and Angelina Jolie, and Fallen with Denzel Washington and John Goodman. They're both similar crime movies.
You..sorry..the both of you are stellar sleuths. This was 1995...this was text book noir...dark,gritty abd entertaining. Your reactions are so...genuine..so cinematic. Kudos!! In the cineplex I must have viewed this 5 or six times just to get all the little ticks and tropes. Freeman..Pitt (all gritty) and Spacey..and don't forget Paltrow...chef's kiss!! My first theater audience reaction was just mute silence at the end...pure shock! This is what good movie making is all about. Again...nice overview.
I remember watching it in the theater and how quiet it was at the end. Hundreds of people silently shuffling out of the cinema, not one of us spoke. Goosebumps just remembering it.
I saw this in the theater when it was first released. During the movie, no one made a sound. After the movie, people just sat there, not speak. Eventually, people got up and walked out like they just witnessed something that maybe they shouldn't have seen.

*🍿 ARI AND DENISE* - Almost everyone misses the main point of this film. That point being that Somerset chose Hope at the end. . . . The film conveys so well the pain, sin, and darkness of this fallen world we live in, that the greater overarching message is quickly lost. The main character is Detective Somerset (Morgan Freeman). From the beginning and throughout the film Somerset is shown as tired, lonely, and so resigned to the darkness that he is basically expressing that everything has become meaningless. But after the crazy and disgusting ride of dealing with John Doe, Somerset declares at the end that the world is still worth fighting for. After all that darkness, Somerset did not choose bitterness and meaningless. This is a movie of hope. And after working 2 decades in street ministries in bad neighborhoods, I find Somerset to be an inspiration to me. I will not quit just because wickedness exists. 🙏
Awesome review! Craziest thing about this movie is I thought after watching the first time they showed her head in the box. They made it so realistic. Second time watching i was shocked they didn't show her head. That is amazing cinematography!
