    Oh yeah, it's another larger hive...and they are not happy! I hope you all enjoy how we removed this hive, it was pretty cool. And now, the bees with their new queen are doing great. Thanks for watching. God's peace to all.

      This is more how I remember bees in earlier videos from Mississippi and Louisiana being. Wet bees are dead bees, cold bees are pissed off.

    • @JeffHorchoff
      @JeffHorchoff  หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      Putting the Honey Bandit in the smoker is an old trick many bee wranglers use, it allows the smell of the Honey Bandit to do it's job while not harming bees as it surrounds them. Yes indeed, I bet that swarm was HUGH! Thank you for your blessings and for watching. Until the next one, God's peace Steven.

    You boys make the best bee content! What a pair 😊
    I just saw a video from Africa where they are using beehives to keep elephants at bay (and safe from human settlements) which is a win for nature. They hang the hives on cables between miles of poles, so other animals can cross but elephants would disturb the hives. And elephants fear bees even more than mice. Brilliant right? Greetings from the Netherlands ✌🏼🇳🇱✌🏼

    Each colony has its own temperament.
    I have one super-nice one and one that is extremely defensive, to the point they will actually come find you, 50 feet away, and sting you.
    Most of my other hives are somewhere between the two, with most of them being fairly gentle.
    That said, I will be replacing the queen in the mean hive with a queen from the super-nice one. Beekeeping is supposed to be a fun activity, not a battle...

      I love removing bees in the latter part of winter just as the bees are starting to build up. Fewest number of bees and least amount of honey in the hive. Plus, they build up super fast and have proven to be the best survivors of a hive removal. Thanks for watching. God's peace brother.

    Looks like another great removal!
    It took a second to figure out why the Charlie was showing us dance moves in the middle of a removal.
    I have used honey bandit in the smoker, I just place a bit of news paper to the top so it holds the liquid and gets steamed off. I'll use the news paper to spray down and place in the attic just in case I need to remove the pressure for whatever reason. Once it's sprayed directly it's hard to remove that pressure later.
    I do keep the orientation of the combs as well, but it's to make sure the comb goes sideways or upside down so they won't reuse it after it emerges. That way they work brood and foundations or comb I have for them. A month later I can remove their old comb without having anything left in them.

    Dang, if those bees aren't Africanized, I'd hate to see ones that were!!! That hive was ginormous! You should get quite a bit of honey and wax from that hive. If there isn't a queen in there I hope they start making queen cells to create one right away.
    Even though it'll be a LOT of work, given the precarious state of our bees it's such a blessing to have so many thriving hives. If you decide to cut back on your hive numbers after the harvest, you can spread that wealth and love out to other private bee keepers in the area so that the expansion continues. You boys have a special thing going and a wonderful partnership. Your friendship is perhaps the biggest blessing of all. It creates joy for you both, and on top of that you use your friendship to collaborate to make a difference in the world. I really appreciate what you're doing for the bees and for all us who want to learn and expand the work of fostering our pollinators. Many thanks.

    • @ReflectedMiles
      @ReflectedMiles หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Despite the disclaimers made, there's actually no way to determine whether or not they are Africanized with any certainty outside of lab analysis. This is emphasized in many manuals and by various beekeeping associations, etc. Genetic testing or morphometric analysis of the wings are the standards, but access to that testing is another matter.

      Well, there's no doubt in my mind that without their bee suits those men would have been stung to death had they stayed anywhere near that hive for any length of time. Personally, I wouldn't be interested in having those particular bees' genetics in my apiary. Too agressive.

      Carole, thank you very much for your kind words about the work and friendship between Charlie and myself, we both feed off each other in the relationship. I knew there would be much discussion on the attitude of these bees, and regardless of what other viewers may say or think, and I do respect their opinions, these bees were NOT Africanized. The issue these bees had was they were queen less and as such, they were in stress. Now that the colony is queen right, I gave them a new queen, their attitude has reversed 180 degrees. Like the saying goes, you can't judge a book by it's cover. Again, thank you for your kind words and for all the time you spend following along with Charlie's and my bee wrangling adventures. @@JeffHorchoff So biologists who work with bee populations are wrong on that topic? I don’t doubt that they were stressed by their circumstances and that was the primary driver of their behavior, but that doesn’t mean that their genetics and degree of behavioral response are identical to a hundred years ago. Maybe this topic gets a lot more discussion and lectures in Arizona.

I think larger cells make bees live less of being fatter( larger ) plus less bees per capita in the colonies for mite control and take up more room in hives if you have it in the hive of course I see how more smaller bees will fit in the frame creating more dense colonies and was wandering that this genetics that you removed are the one of the smaller size better genetics !!

    I think of all the past videos. I don't believe I've seen aggressive hives like this one. Had to laugh. You both took it stride with no worries and reassured everyone that they were not Africanized. Later, you and Charlie are assembling the frames with no gear on . 😂 Great video. Let us know how you make out with the queen.

      I thought the general consensus is at this point all bees that are far 12:03 south are part Africanized. The genetics are part of the 'backround radiation' if you will. Sometimes the over aggressiveness presents itself more than others depending on the genetic lottery.

    What a hive! It would have been hilarious if that would have been a hot water heater 😂

      It certainly would have been funny if that were the case, but no way as interesting as seeing all those bees run amuck around me and Charlie. As always, thank you so much Larry. God's peace brother.
