Beehive In Old Shed Wall

  • Beehive In Old Shed Wall
Got a call from "JC" the homeowner about a beehive in his shed wall. Went out & had a look, located in Gentilly of New Orleans, Louisiana.
The interior wall was not the way to go on this as there was built in shelves, work benches, etc... against the wall, so opening up the exterior wall was the way to go.
One problem though: there was a pile of debris against the exterior wall, old wood, leaves, a bunch of crap & a chain link fence very close to the building!
JC was very accommodating & cleared the debris & cut out a section of the fence for proper access.
Normally with lapboard I stagger my cuts, just looks better when putting the wood back but there was a decent bit of rot & termite damage so JC said it was cool to cut the boards right on the studs.
The bees were pretty cooperative even with all the cutting & pulling of the boards away from their nest, that's always a big plus!
This was a win win all around, saved a nice colony of bees & was able to help out a good dude.
If you enjoy my videos please consider subscribing & tell ya friends & family, much appreciated!

I just have to say that you have the best "Bee march" videos! I love the videos posted by Beekeepers, but JP has the absolute BEST marching shots! I can't get enough of them. It's like watching living evaporation in progress. Thanks JP!
Ummm, I also must say that you Beekeepers are probably the only people in the US who can say, "The girls are getting pissy.", without getting in deep trouble.

I've done cutouts on homes where I had to tell the homeowner something like, "your house is like Swiss cheese from termites". To demonstrate pick a board, any board, and let's pull it off and see. How about this piece of door trim? So I pop it off and holy shit everything is bad. Entire house. There are entire neighborhoods like that.

Tim Hottinger actually it has a lot to do with sea level & winters. The further north you go & sea level increases there tends to be far less incidence of termites. Carpenter ants are more of a problem in say New York than termites will ever be.

The answer is always: “you usually find her late in the game unless you get lucky & find her early on.”
So I’m always on the look out for her but know that I will usually find her when most all the comb has been removed.
They seem to have this innate sense that you’re after them, at least in my opinion, & tend to run & hide than just walking around out in the open as if to say “hear I am!”

you use some product for which the bees do not sting you, you do not wear suits and very little smoke, and they have a very docile behavior

I'm new here to your site and you've probably explained this a hundred times but I'll ask anyways. LOL.
How about some tips on telling which bees are honey bees so us "newbees" aren't killing our honey bees off...
I'm a DIY guy and have a hive in my bathroom eves and I'd like not to do the wrong thing this summer when the weather warms up.
Love your content here and your fearless approach to your work. 👍👍👍🍻

FYI JP. start at the top with that siding it will come off easier.

    • @JPthebeeman
      @JPthebeeman  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Can’t really start at the top. When bees build in a vertically oriented space they almost always begin building at the top of the void so you work from the bottom going up. But...
The main reason you start below is if a good bit of the comb is attached to the lap board at the top & you pull it away you’re in for quite a big mess & a bunch of aggravated bees.
I’ve done this a few times before, trust me on that. 😉
