This was the only Snake Eyes figure available to me as a kid until the Ninja Force version released. Always wanted the older ones as a kid, but now looking back I've got to say it's the perfect embodiment of the 90s aesthetic. And somehow, it works.

It was so weird how they buffed-up the body at the time, but I loved it; the color too finally made Snake Eyes an interesting figure to have on display.

I did not like this version until he was illustrated in an issue of GIJOE, and Snakes Eyes, Duke, and I believe Lady Jaye invade Cobra Island. Snake Eyes looks amazing in this issues. The illustration of Snake Eyes stabbing a B.A.T in the back of the head is absolutely incredible.

Same. I was in high school at the time and hadn’t thought about G.I. Joe in years. (LOVED it when I was younger.) Anyway, was at the comic shop looking for some X-Men comics and ran across those issues. Oh, man, yeah, Snake Eyes looked great! I ended up buying that figure at a Toys r Us. And then bought the Dollar General update when the 25th anniversary figures hit hard a few years back.

Issue #133. The cover art of Snake Eyes in this outfit is amazing also.
This issue in piticular, and the few issues before and after, really tones down the blue a little. Really helps the designe of the outfit.

Great review. My son had both v3 and v4 from the huge box of Joes I bought at a yard sale. I bought him the 12" H.O.F version and set it as well as other 12" figures when I found my ex wife was going to have a boy. I want to say my son used v4 as a Swat figure along with the 3 versions of Shockwave that he had as well.

This was the only version of Snake Eyes that I owned in childhood and I loved it in spite of the neon colored accessories and departure from his established look. I do agree that an Uzi and scabbards on his backpack for the twin swords would made this a better figure.

I had that 12" Snake Eyes as a kid. I never got the 3-3/4 V4 until I was older, approaching my teens and got him at a flea market with no accessories. The Ninja Force version was the first 3-3/4 I had as a young kid, even then I hated the lack of articulation.
Finally around 97 I got the Stars and Stripes Forever set with V7. A reissue of V1.5 with some grey highlights like V2. That was my go-too Snake Eyes until I stopped playing with them.

I wasn't so thrilled about this style of character for Snake Eyes especially in the HOF 12 inch scale when it first came out. But I also wasn't involved with the scale of Joe after 1986ish I wasn't buying them or looking at them in the toy aisles from then on. But now after so many years I really love the outfit and how good it looks with the other figures. I put all of them together within the 12 inch framework. Especially when I figured out that Snake EYes and Stalker were in Vietnam then I saw the war years of the line as being the Stalker and other figures fighting America's wars then fighting against Cobra and the other bad guys.

85 is my favorite overall, but I love the 91 version, if only for nostalgia. (It is pretty hideous though, isn't it?) By the late 80s, I was feeling myself "too old" for GI Joe (and most toys) as it seemed most of my friends my age were more into things like sports and video games. But, I soon started hanging out with a kid who would become one of my best friends, and ended up getting back into the Joes (and other lines, like TMNT) through his enthusiasm for them. Unfortunately, I'd already given most of my Joes away to younger neighborhood friends by then, so I had to start a brand new collection. 91 Snake Eyes was the first new version after I got back into it, as well as the only one I had during that "second wave" of collecting and playing with Joes. So, definitely nothing but good memories of this silly-looking version!

I still have this one somewhere. I LOVE the sculpting on this figure, and I am okay with the red goggles (makes me think of Lowlight's visor), the grey and silver, and I am even okay with the grappling hook (yes, you have the original string, and it is supposed to wrap loosely around the cylindrical section of the barrel), but the blue on this figure is a bit much, and the bright orange and goofy gun is too much. I would have preferred a dark grey if they wanted the color contrast.
    Anyway, thanks for posting!

I always thought the color scheme of this Snake Eyes made the figure look like a Cobra agent.
I found the Night Fighter Guile figure used the same body as Snake Eyes v4, so I picked up one of those figures, swapped the v4 head onto the body, and added a lil black paint to make a proper colored Snake Eyes figure.

  • @forumicebreaker
    @forumicebreaker 3 ปีที่แล้ว

That looks very much like the original string.
With the string wrapped around the backpack it the swords can be carried tucked into them. (If you got that figure loose it might even have been the one I opened and sold to a store years ago.)
A random thing that stood out to me years ago, compare 1991 card backs, the year seems to be somewhat a carryover from 1990 in style. Tracker, Snake Eyes, Cobra Commander, B.A.T. II are only on the back of their packages but not on the other 1991 figures card backs.

I'd been a Joe fan for much longer, but this was my first Snake Eyes figure. It's not the best, but it's also under rated. I was collecting the 1991 Impel G.I. Joe cards and was ecstatic to see Snake Eyes included in the "1991 Recruits" subset -- I new I'd be getting my first SE figure withing the next few months! The card art was very misleading, with his more traditionally colored uniform, but I was still happy with the figure -- no more using Ice Viper with his eyes covered with Sticky Tack as Snake Eyes for me! His weapons aren't colored well but the swords are sculpted well and the grappeling hook is a great take on a spring loaded weapon. The gun is odd, but there were definitely worse ones...

Thought this one looked pretty good except for the orange weapons.
The blue shirt didn’t bother me too bad but the blue boot spats are a bit much, I was glad the 12” Hall of Fame version didn’t have that. The Hall of Fame Snake-Eyes that came out after that one based on the Ninja Force Snake-Eyes was even cooler because you could take the extra gear off and get a more version 1 look.

Putting some work on it (specifically: 1- painting it black with some dark grey details 2- 3d printing a new head with goggles sized more like the ones in the artwork 3- replacing the weapons), the figure could become a decent snake eyes.
That spring loaded accessory is beyond stupid: regardless that you prefer Snake Eyes as ninja or as pure commando, both prized stealth and I dare anyone to find some stealth in a MISSILE grappling hook XDXDXD

Thanks for some new-to-me info! I’ve always preferred Snake Eyes as a Commando with martial arts training, not the other way around. This was pre-Turtle popularity, so not sure what triggered the shift that led to Hasbro’s decision to focus on his ninja side more than ability to cap fools with his uzi. I’m guessing Karate Kid’s success?
Larry Hama fell under the sway of Cobr... ahem, Hasbro’s demand that he use their increasingly STUPID toys in the comic (thankfully, Hama broke free of the Brainwave-Scan... *cough*... long enough to kill off a bunch of the new idiots after 1-2 appearances! But by ‘88, TMNT was booming, leading to Hasbra dumb idea of “Ninja Force.” Everybody was a Ninja now. As mentioned in the video, the GI Joe logo got shrinky-dinked with “Featuring SNAKE-EYES (Larry, is it hyphenated or not?). This would’ve been considered the comic book’s darkest days, but Cobrasbro made even stupider and stupider decisions capitalizing on Toxic-Waste, Just Say No (Joe?) drug sellers, then basically crashed and burned with space-mutant monsters and Neon, regaining its footing as Real American (Not always ninjas) Heroes for the final batch of issues. Hama put a lot of time and personal experience into making the Marvel comic far grittier, more realistic and incorporating *actual military* ranks, specialties, vehicles (C-130, baby) and details down to specs of guns, ammo and C-Rations that separated it from the lasers and parachutes-4-all cartoon (which still rocked). The first 120 issues are arguably the best, even though it included some silliness. A favorite scene of mine that you’d never see in any cartoon was a SAW Viper finding a trench full of Joes and brutally mowing them all to pulp, dead.

Ninjas were popular before the Turtles hit the scene. Enter the Ninja and Revenge of the Ninja created the ninja craze in the states, and Enter the Ninja was most likely the source Larry Hama lifted his idea from for the Snake Eyes/Storm shadow rivalry, just with the colors reversed. Cole, the caucasian white robed heroic ninja vs Hasegawa, the evil black robed ninja that couldn't accept a foreigner as a ninja.

I think the sculpt of this figure isn't particularly bad but the color scheme definitely could have been better suited for a character such as Snake Eyes (included the accessories, but being a 90's figure I guess putting on some neon was inevitable at the time).

If they were determined to go for another colour other than black, wouldn't olive green have been more suitable? Better still, give him woodland camo and maybe some black. It'd be much more fitting a commando.

When this Snake-Eyes came out, I wanted him, just because of his name. I hated the color for his weapons and the design of the backpack. I thought his goggles were odd design too. I accepted the overall color of his uniform, but he seemed too bulky in muscles. I prefer version 3 more, yet I felt version 5 and 6 were not great.

Wow...so...I decided to dig out my old snake eyes after seeing this review. Long story short...his weapons are red! Definitely a darker shade compared to that in this video. Is it a colour variant? It was purchased in Canada if that makes a difference. I don’t think I’m colour blind lol

I still have mine and they are most definitely orange like the vid. Mine were USA so there could be a regional variant. I've seen some differences in Canadian releases, the stickers for the GI Joe shuttles for example.
