YES! I have been waiting for this one! By FAR my favorite GI Joe action figure. I was a little late for v.2 - and that version of Snake Eyes seemed impossible to find at the time. So, v.3 (v.4 to a lesser degree) was the one for me.

The story behind this outfit in the comic is so great - it makes SE even darker than he was already. I had this version of SE along with version 2 and 4, and while I consider version 2 to be classic this might be the best of them all.

The ridge pattern on his backpack are darts for the blowgun. Then you can actually wedge the uzi hook /ring on to one of the hooks on the backpack

Another example of how neat a lot of the 1989 figures were. Settling into GI Joe a little late, this was the one and only Snake Eyes I had at the time.
I think the omission of Vietnam from this figure's file card was a part of making the toys timeless, so it just used the somewhat vague "Southeast Asia." It was rare for a figure to specifically refer to actual events and time periods; Duke's seemed to be the most specific, giving actual years for when he did what.
My favorite of the modern Snake Eyes figures is the "Arctic Trooper" with the parka, not to be confused with the white-coated movie version.

I really liked this version of Snake Eyes it was the first one I owned. Years later I got a Street Fighter movie edition Ghile and took his black parachute pack and strap (same as the green mail order parachute pack) and gave it to Snake Eyes. He resembles the character from issue 104 of the Marvel comic run.

When I was about 10 I made "post-war waiting at airport Snake-Eyes" using Footloose. I didn't know who Footloose was but somehow I ended up with that figure. I covered his head in hot glue and wrapped a white paper/wire bread tie around his head like bandages, leaving the eyes showing. It was an okay end product. Actually I hope I still have it in that condition but something tells me I tried to restore the figure in my twenties (ha ha oops).

I liked this one as a kid but he was eventually replaced by V4. My son loves V3, so I picked him up V12 which is a repaint of V3 with some gold to break up the silver applications and the Joe symbol down the leg, a great update. Hoodie 788 would like this one.
My personal favorite version is V27 from 2005. It's a repaint of V4 in great colors for the Toys R Us exclusive Heavy Assault Squad. 👍

Snake Eyes v2 was ninja/Japanese-themed with the stylized katana and influences from the comic series. For some reason, the figure of Snake Eyes v3 was Kung Fu/Chinese-themed with the 3-section staff, butterfly knives, and lion sword. (Of course, Larry Hama never used the 3-section staff and changed the lion sword to a katana, keeping the Japanese influences.)

This is THEE Snake Eyes. I ended up getting two of them because someone stole the first one. He was my favorite GI Joe toy…….period. I got him the first time one summer when I was taking swim lessons at my local YMCA. Will never forget that. Went on down to Toys R Us and got him with my own allowance money…..straight up! The action figures were only about 2 bucks and some change so……

  • @tonyjackson4078

I think this is how Snake-Eyes evolved. He was totally a commando in v.1 then the ninja aesthetic crept in more with v.2, and v.3 is Ninja Snake-Eyes. Even his uzi has a flash suppressor for stealth. These 3 in my eyes(no pun intended) are the holy trinity of Snake-Eyes design.

  • @shanehai2699
    @shanehai2699 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

The modern figures are generally MORE proportionate than the O-ring toys. That's why they're slimmer and less bulky. Also, the knives ARE slightly larger than the molded ones, for some reason, though they didn't need to be.
I really haven't had any issues with having him hold his weapons and accessories, so I'm not sure why yours fall out so easily...
That said, I have BOTH figures and while I still really like the vintage figure, the modern figure is WAY more versatile and poseable, WITH the removable blades that YOU WANTED on the original. I guess there's just no satisfying some people, but it is what it is.

Another great video, I got into G.I.Joe cause of the sunbow series, years later after seeing your videos I decided to pick up the G.I.Joe Tradepaperbacks and read what the comics were like, I showed my 3 year old nephew a picture of Snake-Eyes and later on when I show him the picture of Snake-Eyes without the name he will say Snake-Eyes, Guess showing him the of Snake-Eyes made him like he already knew who Snake-Eyes was.

That Series was cancelled due to the Writer posting some weird stuff ( I'll leave it at that) .. It was actually VERY bad series and only lasted 6 issues. We just wrapped up the Silent Options Story featuring Dawn, Bombstrike, and Agent helix and OMG was that grrrrrreat. I have that series broken down too and its amazing. Again, Hama is looking at the Future of GIJoe BUT with a firm foot in the past so its a excellent blend . I think all ol school Joe fans will enjoy !

Got this version of Snake Eyes for my collection in 2014, along with the updated version in the modern style sculpt. While this look might not be as iconic as his version 2 action figure from 1985, I still enjoy it even if the Marvel comic series gave the costume a crazy origin. The first Snake Eyes action figure I owned, was version 4 from 1991. I still think that version 4 was a decent enough figure even with the brighter colored uniform and accessories. I do how ever wish that version 4 had the Uzi an accessory. Like Flint's shotgun or Low Light' sniper rifle, it is an iconic accessory and to me is just as important of an accessory to Snake Eyes as his sword and Timber are.
I do agree that the modern sculpt version of this figure could have been better. He defiantly needed an Uzi that he could hold properly, along with a better way to attach and remove the Night Vision Goggles. Also I would think given how far Hasbro has come with making working holsters for pistols and sheaths for knifes, they could have found a better way to store the Butterfly Swords.

I had version 2 of Snake Eyes back in the day, and when version 3 came out, something that kept me from getting it was the two silver knives molded into his chest -I just didn't like they way it looked (if only I knew at the time that, in regards to looks, things would go even crazier with version 4).
The 25th anniversary update of this figure I must say that does a lot of improvement (at least in my opinion) by making the knives on his chest removable this time around.

Snake Eyes, I never include him my top favorite GI Joe's, because he's the best. I always say, my favorite besides Snake Eyes is Shockwave. I'm not a fan of this version, mainly to due with those knives on his chest, and that sword, maybe strapped to his legs or criss-crossed in his backpack. The sword looks more like a broad sword than a katana, or rather a ninjato, and what's with the claw thing on the handle? Besides that, I think this is a descent version of him, much better that what came next in the og line... Great review as usual Hoodie! Thanks!

Great review! I think this version of Snake Eyes isn't as great as the first 2 versions. My favorite will always be version 2. This figure has too much silver and those sculpted knives on his chest are too big in my opinion. I think they should've gave him the same accessories as version 2, only have the uzi and sword molded in silver with the same black packpack. I think having Timber with this figure should've been made a priority at Hasbro, too.

I think the Pursuit of Cobra Snake Eyes is the definitive Snake Eyes.

the knives are known as Chinese Butterfly Knives. They're ridiculously large to be strapped to his chest that way.

Ironically in the Devil Due G.I. Joe comic books, Snake Eyes has a single Butterfly sword strapped to his chest. I don't recall if he was ever shown using it thought.

I don't think that "uzi" was originally intended for this figure. I think they tossed it in to go with his commando theme.

How come everyone forgets Snake Eyes first dies in Devils Due GI Joe: America’s Elite #7? Devils Due was the first to continue the story after 155 and when they lost the license that continuity was “Disavowed”

I remember that story. Not a big fan, that gave me a lot of enmity towards the Red Ninjas.

One of my favs in the entire line, i might like this one more than version 2 which is saying alot since that version is another standout. I loved how this figure sorta sorta had a more "ninja" feel than a true military commando. i dun mind the accessories as much as you do but a lack of timber was a mistake. I never read the comics as a kid...kinda interesting how they incorporated a costume change with a storyline. Shame they couldnt work this version into the cartoons somehow.

You weren't kidding about Snake-Eyes' story being more and more convoluted over time. I think every major Cobra character is connected to him. Cobra Commander's brother was the drunk driver that killed his parents and twin sister when he came home from Nam. Baroness wrongfully thought Snake Eyes had killed her Brother [he actually killed the guys who killed her brother. Destro and his Father exonerated him on the spot. Unfortunately Baroness never heard or saw this so this led to the events of the Snake Eyes trilogy where Snake Eyes gets this ver.3 outfit. That's not counting how many times he's had his face restored only to have it burned again, have it restored again and you get the point. Hama was clearly running out of ideas when he started this trope.

I got a d&d toy that kinda looks like that sword iirc. If so maybe the prior sword is also a same mold different industry. I'd see gi joe guns or bodys on generic toys when young always wondered why some and not others

The character of Dawn Moreno was created for cosplayers. Fact. Larry Hama admitted it!

That is lame AF. Almost as lame as the idea that a 75 pound 14 year old girl is Cobra Commander's bodyguard.

You can hook the uzi on the blowgun barrel. Then he can at least hold everything, although it doesn't make much real sense.

Part of why it's overlooked is that the IDW continuation rendered it non-canon.

He could probably push enough air through his mask to blow the gun since a lot of times those masks are made out of silk

I have both the 2nd and 3rd Snake Eyes. I saw the 4th at Toys R Us once and was quite irate because it looked so awful. In a perfect world I would I could have a version 1 Snake eyes with version 2's level of detail, mobility, and wolf. The 3rd version is pretty cool but the knives on the chest is to much, would have been better with a more utilitarian commando vest.
Snake Eyes, Stalker, and Firefly are my favorite figures. Very bad ass characters. Sadly I think GI Joe jumped the shark a bit with going down the Ninja rabbit hole. That said, at age 12 I did by a ninja costume, get cheep mirror sun glasses and ran around in the dark trick or treating as Snake Eyes.

There was only 1 version of Timber? I am pretty sure there were 2 Timbers released. I know I did not get the 1st one that came out. Unless it is a re-release and repackaging?
But the Snake Eyes death and "resurrection" story sounded pretty cool. I know about the death, but I stopped buying the GI Joe comics a long time ago.
Overall, I am okay with this version. Not my favorite, but it is pretty good.
