    I should have known some of you would feel this way since you are the internet and you guys suck the fun out of everything. It's not like I destroyed a Steinway. Pianos are like cars. If the cost to repair it is more than the value of the piano then it is totaled. Every piano shop I know of in my area has a warehouse section for parts pianos and pianos not worth fixing. When the warehouse space is full then off to the dump it goes. I saved the piano from the dump and the metal got scraped.
    Also gutting a piano is way easier and cheaper than building a case from scratch.

      @@peterjohnson4932 OR you could have used nuance and logic around the descriptors "Old free and junky" (59 seconds) and come to the conclusion that a musician (especially a church worship musician.) wouldn't have done this to a serviceable piano, only one that was "junky"

    • @scott1564
      @scott1564 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@peterjohnson4932 there was no need to explain that. If you actually knew anything about older pianos (which it appears you know nothing), you'd know that there are hundreds of thousands of these sitting around doing nothing but collecting dust. They have no market value and the people that own them can't give them away. They're horrible instruments and were never designed to age. They are essentially disposable, except for their quality wood and construction, and were designed to be a cheap way for a kid to take piano lessons in the 50s-90s when our culture put a premium on that sort of thing and before digital pianos became both the norm and good enough to practice and learn on. In fact, these really aren't instruments. I don't know if I'd go so far as to call them junk, but in terms of playing them, they're just about that. At any rate, their only redeeming value now is to be used as the guy does in this video. I would even bet money that the original manufacturers of these pianos would be thrilled that someone is using them in this manner. They would be shocked to know someone was actually trying to play them as an acoustic piano because they knew they were a 20 year, at most, instrument. The fact that you don't know any of that means you shouldn't be making ANY comment on here, much less a critical one. He didn't owe you any explanation; as soon as you saw he was doing something you didn't like, you should have gone on to another video. Not rail on him for "destroying" his own property. Especially when you can get the same thing from dozens of people where you live, no doubt, for nothing more than a call to 2 strong friends (if you have any). It can sit in your living room and sound bad. He doesn't need thicker skin -- YOU need to quit trying to be a bad ass online. It just shows what a fool you are.

      I would have to disagree on cost it works both ways. If you use recycled wood you can come out ahead. The sound board may or may not be good for a speaker enclosure, I would think it would be better than the particle board they sell for speakers. I never tried. I always removed the fiber from sealed enclosures the bass sounds better so I believe the sound board would be good in sealed enclosures. As for cost you have to include the power tools and special bits to remove the tuning pegs. I myself like a real action so removing the action is out of the question. Weighted keys just don't cut it for serious piano technique. But I must take into consideration you molested a spinet piano so not much is lost. A studio practice piano would be one that I might consider guting out. I still have my old keys and action from an old upright I thought about making an electronic keyboard with real action and the hammers with trigger a switch but the noise it would make would make the project useless. Maybe I could find a way to reuse them keys, well thanks for this interesting video the project looks cool with the lights and all. 73

      Any old piano can be turned into a hybrid that is much more interesting than just a case for a cheap digital piano board. Here is an example of the result of my project - the old and completely unsuitable Zimmermann was taken as a basis, all of its original sounding part was removed and electronics were made on the optical sensors of the keyboard. The original mechanics are retained. The result is an instrument with a high number of sensitivity thresholds (1024), and sounds like a real acoustic grand piano. Requiring no maintenance other than occasional adjustment of the hammer mechanics.

    I got a spinet piano a couple of years ago. The piano was free, but I had to pay to move it and get it professionally tuned. The tuner told me it wasn’t a good piano, manufactured 1938-1939 and wasn't good even when new (he said it was the piano equivalent of a Costco guitar). He suggested exactly what you did and luckily I found your video! I don’t think I’ll add lights as it's for my studio, no stage plans, but I like your idea of using adapters so you can access inputs and outputs from the front or side. Nice job!

    I am so overwhelmed and impressed by what you accomplished! I have an old spinet piano on which the bridge is collapsing, and cannot afford to have it rebuilt. It's been in my family since I was a child (over 50 years) and I'm thinking about replacing it with a digital piano and would love to put the digital piano in the cabinet of my spinet. I wouldn't need to go into the detail you did, but found your video fascinating. You're amazingly talented! Good on you!

    This is an awesome way to improve look on stage and much better than typical metal stand with wires going everywhere. Most of these old pianos are unused, poor quality to begin with and were never properly maintained so no matter how much money you spend they will never be a decent musicians piano. Super if you want a nice piece of furniture in your home but most piano players will not want to play it. Assuming you previously were standing was it harder to connect with the audience now that your head is about 2' lower?

A more interesting project would be to keep those things and turn an old into a digital piano keeping the entirety of the piano action. People pay big money for a piano action with a digital component. Just take out the strings, add sensors, and a place for the hammers to hit rubber where the strings woke have been. Output to a simple midi

    Why not restoring the old acoustic piano? Why replace the real sound of an acoustic instrument with a digital keyboard. To me this feels wasteful.

    • @wilsoncalhoun
      @wilsoncalhoun 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Why? Pianos don't get better with age, and after a while the cost of repairing and tuning one will begin to exceed the price of a new piano. At least this way it stays useful and out of a landfill.

    • @scott1564
      @scott1564 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Because that piano would not be worth restoring. There are very few quality upright pianos, and those that are of good quality are larger (taller). Even if you replaced all the strings (necessary because it sounded horrible), it still wouldn't sound as good as an '80s or '90s Kawai or Yamaha (and a few other brands) you could pick up for $1200 but would cost more in materials or labor. This piano was sold to someone so it could sit in a living room and hopefully be used by someone in the house for piano lessons and practice. It was also a furniture item. While it had that purpose, it was not made to be a quality instrument and isn't. No church or school would buy this piano (ever -- even when new) nor would a piano student with better options. These things are MUCH better gutted and reused because for the most part, the wood is of good quality and they were pretty well built. Incidentally, how many pianos have you restored?

    • @ronb6182
      @ronb6182 ปีที่แล้ว

      I kinda feel the same way but for the average person it's best to just move on to a better piano. There are still some good tall pianos that sound much better than a spinet. Spinet pianos for the most part are junk. Just ask any piano tuner that still tunes aural. 73

      Anyone who tried to criticize this piano conversion, is obviously just a troller, who gets some odd sense of glee by criticizing anything. It reflects immaturity, and ignorance. I doubt if any of them even played piano.
      I’ve played piano many years, and I don’t like the idea of destroying a good piano, but it doesn’t look like that was a good piano, at least not lately. I’ve been in thrift stores recently, and they have had pianos like these for as little as twenty dollars. A musician realizes that there’s a cost involved in moving these, and if all the piano needed was just to be tuned, they probably wouldn’t want to even pay the cost to just get it in tune, and pay movers. Just adding those basic costs up, is going to start out at least between $250.**, to $300.** or more, and then you don’t know how long it would stay in tune. On the other hand, if you buy a digital keyboard like a Casio, when they’re on sale, you can get one with a weighted keyboard that’s actually fairly decent, with decent piano sounds that will never require the cost of calling a piano tuner, and can be move easily, and practiced on while using headphones, to not bother others in the house. I’ve taught beginner piano students, and I would prefer that they start out on an inexpensive weighted key digital keyboard that they can practice on with headphones, and not worry about mistakes being heard, than a neglected old piano, with uneven keys, that might not stay tuned.
      If any of these trollers want to save a piano similar to this one, there’s no shortage of them, that’s the thing, they’re not collector’s items. If they want to save one though, all they need to do, is call some Goodwill/thrift shops, and it won’t take long to find one. Then, maybe the shop will help them get a deal on someone ( more than one person)..who will move it, and if they’re gonna do a complete reconditioning job on it, like refinishing, making sure that it has all the strings it should have, checking each of the eighty-eight hammer striking systems, to make sure everything is secure, and aligned, and there’s continuity in the wear of the hammers, then they should definitely share that process with all of us, and make sure that they have their cameras ready to record as they get their piano back in presentable shape.
