  • The Sangean MMR-77 may be showing it's age in a wave of new emergency radios sweeping the marketplace. The 77 has an edge when it comes to overall build quality and low power usage. A dynamo to end all dynamos ;) Smooth, All Analog Tuning and the ability to see your dial in the dark is a major bonus.

Thank you Paul B. for donating this radio for review!
Features I like about this Dynamo Powered Radio:
    Above Average FM Reception.
    Easy to Use Controls.
    Headphone Jack.
    Emergency Siren.
    Solid Design.
    All Analog Radio Circuit.
    DC Input.
Runs on optional Two AA Batteries.
Internal, rechargeable NiMH Battery, good for 300-500 cycles(2.4V 700mAh).
AM reception is great on Locals and Ok on Semi Locals.
    Dial Light.
The Dynamo is Robust, and the Grip Area is easy to hold onto.
    Stands Perfectly.
    Tuning LED indicator.
    Small Reading Lamp.
Features that could be added or improved on:
    A Lithium Powered Version.
    Upgrade Lamp to LED.
    Add NOAA Weather Alert.
Overall, this radio is for the Analog Tuning Purist. I would recommend the MMR-88 instead for everyone else. The 88 is a fantastic radio, just buy a few extra 18350s to keep with it and your good to go.

The Internal Battery is a Two Cell NiMH Pack with the value: 2.4V 700mAh. Here is a Picture of it: imgur.com/IWayOkA

Enjoyed this review, thanks. I didn't see anything in the comments so I assume the internal batteries are not replaceable. I bought an MMR-77 used and it's in great shape but the the dynamo doesn't really charge the battery. I can crank away for a minute and it charges the battery enough to run the light for 4-5 seconds. I do like the radio and I only paid $15 shipped so not a big deal.
Again thanks for this and all your reviews.

Yes it’s good to review these old radios I do actually like analog have to say I prefer it to the new slick digital audio broadcasting which we have here in UK and also you and I still think our mode is far superior and also it’s convenient quick and easy to use DABU have to be in a good reception area to receive it clearly without the signal dropping out all the time so keep up the good work with these reviews it certainly fascinating to see that analog radio is still alive and kicking

Great looking receiver, but It's missing the WB station though, that's a deal breaker for an emergency radio

Boy the Sangean MMR-77 sounds so much more mellow compared to the Ccrane Skywave you have there! With them both being the same size.
Think I will buy this one and disconnect the flashlight to just have a dial light....the only flaw.

One drawback is the flashlight shines in your eyes when you just want the dial light. I would disconnect the flashlight so using the dial light can be seen and not drain the batteries fast.

I got a Sony radio for $4 in a thrift store that's almost exactly the same as this, just has the buttons in different places, was surprised to hear they still sell an almost identical model to the Sony

Only Sony with a crank I've seen looks nothing like this.. What model is it?

The Sangean Means More Rock 77. Just like 93.3 WMMR Philadelphia.

What about the people who are visiting for the first time and wanted to see the hand crank work? Disappointed.

So the only way to charge the internal battery is with the dynamo?

I have this radio and its good but the loudspeaker sound good but not strong. A bigger loudspeaker would be better.

Decent Analog Reception. Runs on Two AAs, so you Don't have to Crank the Dynamo.
