  • Eton did a fantastic job with this AM FM Shortwave Emergency Radio. It is very portable, well made, and had no troubles tuning in stations. A perfect companion when the storms blow in.

Features I like about this radio:
    Shortwave reception is good.
    AM reception is very good.
    FM reception is decent.
Speaker audio quality is pleasing to the ears.
    Headphone experience is nice.
    Solid construction.
    Optional AA battery operation.
    Built in light.
    Dynamo.
    Rechargeable battery pack.
Overall a great radio for any household for regular or emergency use. I am simply amazed at how well this radio performs for such a low price on the used market. If you don't own one, do yourself a favor and check one out. Worth every penny.

Thanks for this review! I have a 96-year-old friend who had an FR-250 which he really liked. I just ordered him a nice gray FR-200 on eBay - the 200 will actually be better for him because it receives a wider shortwave range than the 250. He'll really like this!

Picked one up at Goodwill for $7. Some battery leakage needed clean-up. Radio would work if you cranked dynamo. Lithium battery wouldn’t hold a charge though. Finally got terminals cleaned up enough to work with AA batteries. Super tuner on AM, and fine tuning knob is terrific! FM & SW awaits testing. So impressed with this one I’d consider buying a nicer one that’s complete with box, manual and case in a brighter color.
Light is great cuz hold your hand over it to redirect it to tuning dial and voila, illuminated dial!

Big ups, I knew you would have review I went to a thrift store and saw one that is gray label Grundig I bought fir 5.99 not a scratch and only the battery is dead but works on AA. It gets SW just using the whip antenna and lots of AM stations from far away. I am sky high 😁
    Your reviews rock 👍👍✌️

I found an FR-200 with the GRUNDIG badge in the lower-left corner of the face. It was stashed away in a closet, new in the box. Looks to be an earlier version. I purchased this as old stock from a local radio shack store back in 2005. Did ETON buy out Grundig? I am not sure of the company history. Anyway, it was never taken out of the box until today. Of course, my little rechargeable pack was not holding a charge. I love the veneered slow tune dial for early-morning and late-night DX hunting. Brilliant!
As for the battery door, if you remove the NiMh battery pack you might find that the door closes with full retraction into the slide. The problem is related to the dc plug or connector not going down into the hole, keeping the pack proud of the opening. The pack hits the door on the curved edge causing a spring tension. Good news that the door is hinged but I'd still use scotch tape if hiking with it just to prevent the batteries from spilling out.
Thank you again for the awesome videos!

What an old school analogue receiver!
Reminds me the first radio I had, National-Panasonic of 1982. The sound, the tuning, even the size. What a memories! I have the Tecsun S2000, which is great tabletop, a Tecsun PL680 and 880. But I feel nostalgic for the old school (and emergency). Thanks Pete, 73

I have the original CC Observer (the non-solar version) in blue that resembles that one in terms of design. I bought it about 5 years ago, but unfortunately it suffers from Sticky Case Disease, along with a few other radios I have. Several of my radios have cranks but I consider them a Last Resort power source (I plug them in to keep them charged and always keep AA and AAA batteries around). I recently discovered your channel and love your radio reviews and have been watching as many as I can. Keep up the excellent work!

The Eton E1/E1 XM is one of the finest portable (meaning it can run on batteries) shortwave radio ever made. I'd say it's a toss-up between the E1/E1 XM and the Sony ICF-2010.
Lots of neat radios in that brochure but if you had to pick one other than the E1/E1 XM, I'd recommend the G4000A. It's awesome. The YB-550PE (also sold as the Tecsun PL-230) looks super cool but it leaves a lot to be desired.

This review makes me wish that I got this Eton emergency radio instead of the American Red Cross Solarlink FR-600 RDS. The biggest reason is because it uses up the 3 AA batteries real fast. I also have the Eton E10 and it’s my favorite among non-SSB SW radios.

Now i got the Tecsun GR 88.
And what a radio. Only complain is it is a little hard to fine tune on FM.
Receiver on AM is one of the best i tried. I have another radio, a chinese brand called Marquant who i have tuned for best performance on a small part of AM band, around 870 khz with a large ferrit antenna and it was on pair with the Tecsun. Top score here. FM is also good. SW, haven't had a chance to try it so much, but i heard VOA here in Norway on SW.
The battery was stored a few years (2014 stood on the case) so i was charging it with the dynamo 3 times before it woke up. So if you purchase one with some years of storage, charge the battery at least 3 times before use. Won't hold charge much if you not charge it properly.

I have the older model, Grundig FR-200 in Gray. The light is a terrible yellowish incandescent bulb, probably not efficient on batteries. Recently I acquired another model FR-200, the Eton LL Bean edition in green with a bright blue-white LED that is a welcomed improvement. I'm still comparing both tuners ability but on initial use it seems similar. The shortwave surprised me. I don't think much else has changed. They are not only good tuners but fun!

Looks like it would make a great everyday radio that runs on AA batteries but really seems to fall somewhat short as an emergency radio relative to the many many other options out there with that small light, not any easy way of charging the internal battery, no solar charging panel, and no way of charging external USB oriented devices like a cell phone. Good review of a great value on an Eton radio.

Wow. I watched you go over the features, the little retro catalog (which was kool!) and band scans but didn't realize that it does not receive NOAA. I guess that I assume that a radio marketed as a emergency radio will receive NOAA broadcast. I saw a few on EBay for around $29. I`m a little disappointed about the lack of weather capabilities But still like. Thanks Todderburt.
