I have had the CC Pocket for almost 8 years. It has not been treated gently - having been my companion on many hikes and even has been dropped on pavement. It works as new although it sure no longer looks new. Batteries also last for several months of almost daily use, another point for CC Crane even though the reviewer didn't mention it. I usually have it on my belt as I walk so having the easy access presets is a big plus for me since I just touch the button I want to get the station I want. Sometimes I take it to bed with me and listen during my sleep time. I am older and a light sleeper, often waking up in the middle of the night and unable to go back to sleep. lt keeps me entertained. Again the presets mean I can change stations with one touch and not having to look at it to do so. For me it is well worth the difference in price, especially when amortizing the initial cost over the number of years I have owned it.

I considered buying both of these in the past year, and I ended up going with the CC Pocket a couple weeks ago because REI sells them and I had a coupon. I have been very pleasantly surprised with it. I can MW Dx with it from Chicago to NYC. And the 25 presets were enough for me to preset a huge amount of Chicago's FM band. I can't tune in 90.9 WDCB on it though, which is my favorite station. Still, A+.

These are both excellent radios. You can't go wrong with either one but consider that the Sangean design is more than 10 years old. Its been on the market that long. The CC Pocket should be better because it debuted about 5 years ago. Both are fine radios and I would not be surprised if Sangean built them both.

Just added the Cc pocket to my Ccrane line up. Ccrane radio 3 & skywave SSB. All perform flawlessly. Each has an individual role in my personal needs.
Todd thanks for demonstrations in the radio fields. Your knowledge and ability to correctly provide plenty of real world information really helps in the buying process.
As an outdoorsman and camping enthusiast, cell phone signals are not always available. Weather alert information backed up by these CCranes is outstanding.

So I got a super steal of a deal on this radio. I watched your review before and after I unboxed it which the box was a little beat up and no instruction manual. But I'm technically inclined so the radio is east to use and I love it. 😁📻❤😁📻❤😁📻❤

Just a point of reference here. I've had my CC Pocket for 6+ years now and it has spent some time in a warmer environment. The "soft touch" rubber edges and buttons became sticky. I've cleaned it with alcohol, which didn't really help. I tried a heavy dawn dish soap/water mix that I normally use to change the tires on my motorcycles and wiped it down, and it seemed to help a ton. I wish companies wouldn't use these materials that become sticky, but it is what it is.

    Hey there!
Just got this little radio (CC Pocket) late last night at REI. Has been on my bucket list of radios ever since I found your channel few years ago now.
I pulls in tons of stations FM and AM. However at Low to Mid volume is has a very noticeable hiss/ssshhhhh sound with even a very faint intermittent beep sound. My question to you "Todderbert" and community owners of this little radio is...
Is this normal? That Low to Mid volume consistent background sound.
I like to listen to Baseball and Talk News radio but of course also some Tunes and this sound is quite noticeable. Would love to hear near quiet background noise between voices and so on.
I tested with 5 other radios and two other Headphones. As well as had my wife do a blind test between 5 different radios with the CC Pocket in the mix and she said the same. Wich saddened me.
Most radios I would say, unless they are absolutely Perfect, have a ssshhhhh sound or buzz sound, some being better then others.
Would appreciate the feedback very much. Purchased at REI $59.99.
    Thanks a Bunch

One thing I'd evaluate would be amplifier hiss. A constant hiss level at any volume level is not nice when you want to listen at low volume levels such as in bed. I find the Sangean DT-120 tolerable but the DT-160 intolerable. I'm wondering how these compare to the DT-400 and C.Crane Pocket and how they compare to each other. Same, got the Sangean for $38. I like the listen-with-alert and lack of rubberized anything (it _always_ goes sticky eventually). I do wish it had some sort of internal FM antenna or maybe a little headphone jack mounted rubber duck (there's a project). My first "renewed" one came with a dud speaker/headphone switch. Sangean was quick to replace but, as an enthusiast, waiting a week for a new one is a bummer. That switch is a big minus, in order to avoid a whip antenna. I have an old Realistic mini radio where the antenna wire has a very short headphone plug (a springy ring 1/8" deep) so it doesn't trigger the automatic speaker disconnect. Clever, unless you lose that wire.

Nice video, but you're making the wrong comparison -- these two radios are not comparable radios. Except for both being "pocket" radios, the Sangean DT-400w isn't even in the same class as the C. Crane. A much fairer comparison would be the C.Crane and the Sangean DT800. Both are more similar in design, size, features, price and performance.
The SangeanDT-400 comes with an A/C adapter to power the radio directly or to charge ni-cad of NiMH batteries installed in the radio. It also comes in either black or yellow. All in all a great radio

Hello Todderbert, I have the Sangean dt-400w and I also have the original dt-200v that I bought way back in 91. It still works perfectly and has been through allot of hard use. both of these radios receive the same on AM. The dt-400w has a more balanced sound but it distorts at a lower volume and the AM band can sometimes overload on very strong stations. The FM seems about the same on both radios.
I tried out a cc pocket, when it first came out. I found that the FM and even the weather band were better then on the dt-400w. the selectivity and capture ratio were excellent however, the stereo didn't "lock in" as well but wasn't bad at all. I ended up returning the cc pocket to CCrane, because the AM performance wasn't to my liking. It had some kind of "soft muting". It was like, as the stations got weaker, the AGC in the radio didn't bring up the sensitivity as I would expect. It made it next to impossible to listen to week stations, in the day and had some weird results in the evening. I have read that this may be do to the DSP chip used in that radio. I have the CC Skywave and absolutely love the performance of that radio.
Have you ever noticed a problem with the AGC action on the cc pocket? It looks like on your video, that problem has been fixed and that the cc pocket now performs well on the AM band. I did like the dx features and the selectivity over the dt-400w. I'm a retired radio engineer and have spent most of my life evaluating and enjoying radios of all kinds. I really appreciate the AM band scans, that you do on your channel. It really gives me a feel for the radio, in a way that nothing else can. I also like the audio demonstration that you do for each radio. I have a good ear for sound and it comes through well on my computer speakers.
Pleas keep up the good work and I would love to hear your thoughts.
    Darwin :)

Thanks for your fast reply. I have the dt-200v and not the dt-200x. It is a much older radio and came out in 1991. It performs the same as the dt- 400w and has allot stronger audio, even on headphones. It doesn't have a clock and the AM only goes to 1620, I recommend it if you can find one. I take it that you haven't found a problem with the AGC on the cc pocket. I think it was a problem on the first batch of them. Radio J Allen on his website, "AM Portables Mega Shootout" mentioned the problem with the AM AGC and rated it lower then the dt-400w. He hasn't reviewed a newer sample of that radio however. Thanks again. I hope that helps.
