  • It's impossible to know when an emergency situation will arise, so the smart move is always to have an emergency radio in your kit. RV, camping, or just in case, the SANGEAN MMR-99 Emergency Weather Radio is just jammed with great features and capabilities, notably including a solar charging panel, a hand crank, and a full 7-band NOAA weather radio tuner, along with AM/FM (with RDS)/Bluetooth/AUX. What most surprised tech expert Dave Taylor when reviewing the SANGEAN MMR-99 was that it actually sounds really good too, making it a pleasure to use for music too.

    You failed to mentioned a VERY important talking point. The battery which seems to be built-in and not user replaceable. I much prefer an emergency radio that you can replace the battery at the end of its life cycle.

      For most users "the end of its life cycle" is years and years down the road, probably not even something they'll experience. And if it's starting to show signs of age, crank 'er back up for 60 seconds. I don't think it's a big deal to most buyers.

      @@AskDaveTaylor It is to some of us. It's the only reason I haven't bought this.

      Thanks for the data point. I do wonder if it is a replaceable battery if you're enthused... if y'know what I mean?

      @@AskDaveTaylor That's true if you constantly use the radio. I us rechargeable batteries in my flashlights cause I use them often. I have an emergency radio but I made sure It used the replaceable 18650 cell as the radio is STORED away with the battery removed.
      The SANGEAN MMR-99 is a very nice radio and if came with an internal replaceable battery I would be all over it.

    How long does it operate in standby with no power inputs in alert mode. And how long after you put a better 18650 in it. Also, totally failed to mention it uses 18650 which is a significant point. And on that topic, didn't pop the battery out showing if the battery compartment was shitty or not.

    • @AskDaveTaylor
      @AskDaveTaylor  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Sounds like some good questions for the manufacturer. I cannot possibly cover every possible question! In terms of the 18650 battery, if you end up replacing it, use a reputable brand and you'll be fine. No drama required.

    I was thinking of getting one of these when I go out camping in the Jeep. Wanted to ask, would this radio be loud enough for if I wanted to listen to music in a 3 stall garage as well?

    My ideal weather radio would have no solar panel, no crank, no built-in battery, no flashlight. It would take AA batteries and be 1/4 the size of the gaudy gizmos on the market.

    • @AskDaveTaylor
      @AskDaveTaylor  3 วันที่ผ่านมา

      What if you don't have any AA batteries tho?

      The question is moot. Last night I read the reviews for every Amazon weather radio. While Amazon makes it difficult to know how a particular model performs, since they cleverly mix reviews of different models to even out the scores, there is NOTHIGN they sell in the sub-$100 bracket that doesn't have 4-5% horror stories. I trust these reports much more than the positive reviews. Assuming they all use the same chips, and might even be made in the same workshop, the complaints were that the reception was nil on the weather bands, that the alerts didn't alert, that they ate batteries even when off, that the solar panels did nothing, the cranks broke, the sound was weak and tinny, the tuning function failed within weeks, on and on. I'd never buy a disposable model (one with a built-in lithium battery), There are lots that use 2 AAs, and I do have the discipline to store a handful of AAs (with a 10-year shelf life), but not a one of these isn't described as absolute rubbish. I checked ebay. At one time the SONY corporation made solid radios, but the weather radios from the past used 4 C cells, and were bulky. They also commanded an unreasonable price and likely would suffer from decades of yard sale abuse. I'll check every year to see if a proper weather radio is being offered. At one time we put men on the moon.

      Solid analysis, and you're right, this is a particular product area where the companies seem to be more focused on bling that makes for cool photos than well-designed features that improve the longevity of the product. Which stinks.
      In terms of mixed product reviews, that's a merchant setting not an Amazon issue, as far as I know. Just FYI.

    • @marusholilac

      We're getting into the weeds here, but I believe Amazon has engineered this deception, because it is found throughout the platform, even when a group of unrelated sellers are offering the products. Another misleading practice is the creation of fictional "stores", ie, the "Amana Store", (not a real store), where products from a number of sellers are shown, but without the participation of the manufacturer. The impression is of something sanctioned by the manufacturer. The "stores" that are created by manufacturers are generally useless and incomplete. I'm still trying to decide what to get, and I've revised my criteria for an ideal weather radio further: In addition to having no light, no crank, no lithium battery, no solar panel, I'd like it to have no AM and no FM, no SW and no Aircraft band. Just give me the weather function. Everybody has a radio that they like already, and nobody wants to deal with 20 buttons. That would be the difference between an "emergency" and a "weather" radio.

    • @AskDaveTaylor
      @AskDaveTaylor  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes, but you have a wire, so you can match things up. Also most all phones are now moving to USB-C as the standard for charging: Even iPhones.

      A logical request. Unfortunately from the vendor's perspective, I think it's features that gain attention and sell products, not better reception. :-|

    Absoluut rubbish quality, after 1 year it does not power on, loud cracking noises, screen is enlighted but no display, (accu checked, even without battery) It does not respond to any key and its not an issue of corrosion

    Boooo!! You didn't crank the crank, I wanted to see that work. BTW, the antenna that you pull out isn't the AM antenna.

      You can absolutely imagine how rotating the crank works. You'll need to do a lot of work to get 30min of radio. But yeah, next time i review one of these units I'll add an exciting crank turning close-up! 🙂

      @@AskDaveTaylor Thanks Dave. That's the kind of info I was hoping to find out. Of course I know how a crank works but I was wondering just how much cranking for how much power gained. I was also wondering if there was some kind of power indicator so that as you crank you can see that the battery is charging and at what charge level it is.
