This video made me develop a whole new respect for Betty. She dedicated her entire life to protecting her family. On top of that, she seems like a very sweet and kind lady

She's an absolutly incredible woman. "I promised my Mommy..I promised my Mommy I wouldn't get married. That I would look after Ray, Lorraine and timmy. And I did".
Shes an exterior of steel as any protector would, but a heart of gold. Just look at how enthralled she is when she says "I want to get a microwave", the way she holds her hands when talking to Mark like a shy schoolgirl. It's probably the only affection she's ever gotten.
Betty really deserves kind respect for the care she gives to Ray, Lorraine, and Timmy. That’s quite a responsibility given their resources and her aging body.

Ray reminds me so much of my son who is autistic and non verbal. What stood out to me the most was the kindness of the employee. Instead of awkward stares and ignoring him (like some do my son) she was kind and engaged back with him. Also the fact that this family didn’t go overboard on their shopping spree. It really says a lot about their character 💕

I literally busted into tears every time the camera zoom into Ray and records his actions, movements and words. I really feel sorry for his inconveniences that had followed him since he was born. His knees hurt so bad and yet he couldn't express his pain with words, yet he cuddles their previous neighbor and expresses his love. Ray is such a touching human being. I hope they are doing well.

My wife is from West Virginia and grew up about 20 minutes drive from them. She says people, mostly high school kids used to give the Whitakers such a hard time and they just wanted to be left alone. I hope they get to buy the new house or improve their current home.
that’s so sad to hear :(. even as a teenager i can recognize that some teenagers can be so mean.
but i’m glad that they making the most out of their situation and living happily. i’m hopeful that they can get assistance in what they need and live a better life 💞

I’m from southwest Virginia, not far from Odd, WV. I live in Illinois now, but experiencing a large portion of my life in Appalachia has affected my perception of the world and people themselves due to the living conditions there. I’ve been following your videos of the Whittakers since the first one you posted, and with each new video I tear up more and more. I know so many people who live in similar conditions- I’ve seen them firsthand. I’m so glad you’re helping this family out, you have a truly kind heart. I visited my family over Thanksgiving and thought about your Appalachia videos while I was there. I didn’t truly realize the severity and uniqueness of the conditions there; I’m 18 now and I still don’t think I can truly process it. Your videos touch my heart in an amazing, emotional way. Thank you so much for spreading awareness about Appalachia and helping out this beautiful family. 💗
I'm from SWVA also. Still live in SWVA ..just another area. I grew up not so far away where these people live. Like you I've seen so much, but being 66 years of age Ivd lived it also, the poverty was and still is real. ❤️🤗
After watching “The Darlene Chronicles “ I was so moved I started a monthly donation to a Christian ministry in Appalachia. I have been intrigued by mountain folk since reading the book “Christy” many years ago. It seems these people have been forgotten by society but I believe they are God’s special chosen ones. This family had no choice in the circumstances of their birth and everyone deserves respect.

Ray's knee is really swollen, he's definitely got arthritis in it. I'm also wondering about his belly since he swallows his chewing tobacco. He's never been a big guy but he's lost weight since the first videos.
I think Lorraine wanted one of those pink bras but was too shy to pick one. Timmy is too adorable with his coloring books, and Betty holds the whole crew together. Thanks for all you do for them!

I was thinking the same about Ray's knee. I know the pain of that, without pain medication. Bless his heart, you could hear, like a child when in pain who can't verbalise it. I also saw Lorraine bowling towards to bra's, bless her heart, the first time I saw her engaged with anything. And then she got all shy, why wouldn't she, she was surrounded by Men. I wish I could have grabbed Betty and bought her to her so she could get a few of them.
Once you’re around someone who’s mostly non-verbal for long enough, you naturally pick up on generally what they’re thinking and wanting to communicate. Betty is a saint for helping her family survive in this world.
G-pa was really affected by his multiple strokes when I was younger and I understood what he wanted, when he wanted it and how he wanted it, miss you lots G-pa.

I was quite upset that Ray was forced to get up when clearly he was in severe pain. It came across as though getting him on film was more important than deciphering whether or not he needed medical attention. He should never have been made to walk or to be part of the group. Rest would have been best.

I first clicked on this family's story out of a morbid curiosity. Im ashamed to admit I saw them like a side show. Your videos gave these people dignity and a chance for people like me to look past the stigma. Im grateful to have had the opportunity to glance into their lives. I love how Betty’s accent comes out BIG TIME when she gets frustrated. Reminds me so much of my grandpa’s relatives from Tennessee.
What makes me sad is; one day, sooner than later, Mark’s gonna make a post letting us know that Ray’s gone. Poor guy is pushing 80 and is in terrible physical shape. In the most recent video his eyes seem to be going on him 💔
Ray really needs to see a doctor. The behaviors/communication he's exhibiting shows how severe the pain in his knee is. He aimed to please during the visit, but his mannerisms and vocal abilities show us how much he is in pain. He's such a wonderful soul. I do hope he can get that assessed sooner than later.

I’ll be honest, I had to look up what Appalachian was. Are people not nice to you because of where you are from? Am I missing something?
@@virtualmadworldthere are people who live in that area of the country that have been in little isolated communities with only a very few families for over 200 years. Back in the hills there is alot of poverty, ignorance and intermarriage for generations. It's not the fault of the people who are affected by it. They are born into it and don't really know any better. many were force to leave school at a very early age and work to help support their families. Needless to say people from the outside world are usually not very kind to them. I have family from eastern Kentucky that were still plowing with a mule and planting tobacco in the late 60s. Some relatives of my uncles were so poor they didn't even have a outhouse. His father Everett was completely illiterate and I'm not sure if he had ever been to school and his mother Suddy had a second grade education. That is the reason they came to Detroit was to break the cycle and escape that life and give their kids a chance. There are people living until this day in Appalachia who are worse off than so called 3rd world countries. Our government and charities go and help oversea and turn their heads and ignore the problems at home

I wish this guy would go into the section of Appalachia in new jersey called the ramapo mountains. There lives the only legal nj native tribe. They arent exactly natives though. They are a mix between natives, run away slaves and british from the british soldiers. These people managed to live in these mountains for decades and is located in a rather wealthy area of nj. They are called the jackson whites. They stretch all the way in ny state. Tread with severe caution. These people are not friendly. They are imbred from years of isolation. They have shot at people and approached vehicles with weapons before. They also patrol the area with a make shift police officer of the community. It is a very strange place.

I was laughing so hard the whole time because they are so innocent and funny. The way they grabbed the very first thing they saw was genuine. They are adorable and nice people. Ray is very funny! Just an idea for Ray's knees. Ever hear of Ben-Gay? It's about $10 for a large tube & Wal*Mart, CVS, Walgreens & even most grocery stores have it. That really helps me when I have my arthritis flare ups. Sometimes sore knees can REALLY HURT MORE than people know. I feel bad that he can't communicate very well to tell how bad it's hurting! They could certainly use some help regarding housework, making beds, do they have a place to shower or bathe? If they don't, thats a darn shame!! I think due to Ray's nonverbal disability, it's incredibly rare for someone outside of his family to treat him the same as they treat his siblings. He probably is just as intelligent as the ones that talk, but just has a speech problem. He clearly understands so much and does his best to communicate. He's finally made a friend and I think that's beautiful.
