Ray reminds me so much of my son who is autistic and non verbal. What stood out to me the most was the kindness of the employee. Instead of awkward stares and ignoring him (like some do my son) she was kind and engaged back with him. Also the fact that this family didn’t go overboard on their shopping spree. It really says a lot about their character 💕

Back in the hills there is alot of poverty, ignorance and intermarriage for generations. It's not the fault of the people who are affected by it. They are born into it and don't really know any better. many were force to leave school at a very early age and work to help support their families. Needless to say people from the outside world are usually not very kind to them. I have family from eastern Kentucky that were still plowing with a mule and planting tobacco in the late 60s. Some relatives of my uncles were so poor they didn't even have a outhouse. His father Everett was completely illiterate and I'm not sure if he had ever been to school and his mother Suddy had a second grade education. That is the reason they came to Detroit was to break the cycle and escape that life and give their kids a chance. There are people living until this day in Appalachia who are worse off than so called 3rd world countries. Our government and charities go and help oversea and turn their heads and ignore the problems at home

I was quite upset that Ray was forced to get up when clearly he was in severe pain. It came across as though getting him on film was more important than deciphering whether or not he needed medical attention. He should never have been made to walk or to be part of the group. Rest would have been best.

Ray really needs to see a doctor. The behaviors/communication he's exhibiting shows how severe the pain in his knee is. He aimed to please during the visit, but his mannerisms and vocal abilities show us how much he is in pain. He's such a wonderful soul. I do hope he can get that assessed sooner than later. I first clicked on this family's story out of a morbid curiosity. Im ashamed to admit I saw them like a side show. Your videos gave these people dignity and a chance for people like me to look past the stigma. Im grateful to have had the opportunity to glance into their lives. This video made me develop a whole new respect for Betty. She dedicated her entire life to protecting her family. On top of that, she seems like a very sweet and kind lady
She's an absolutly incredible woman. "I promised my Mommy..I promised my Mommy I wouldn't get married. That I would look after Ray, Lorraine and timmy. And I did". Shes an exterior of steel as any protector would, but a heart of gold. Just look at how enthralled she is when she says "I want to get a microwave", the way she holds her hands when talking to Mark like a shy schoolgirl. It's probably the only affection she's ever gotten.
Betty really deserves kind respect for the care she gives to Ray, Lorraine, and Timmy. That’s quite a responsibility given their resources and her aging body.
It definitely seems like Mark has been accepted into the fold by the Whitakers. You can see the trust and affection that they have for him. Watching them so happily choosing their items at Walmart was so fun. Their joy about such simple things is infectious ☺️
They love Mark. I come from hill folk and know that you don't trust outsiders. They're from a place where you have 3 types of people, enemies, acquaintances, and family. Friends are considered family. They think of mark as a friend so he's a part of their family.

I wish this guy would go into the section of Appalachia in new jersey called the ramapo mountains. There lives the only legal nj native tribe. They arent exactly natives though. They are a mix between natives, run away slaves and british from the british soldiers. These people managed to live in these mountains for decades and is located in a rather wealthy area of nj. They are called the jackson whites. They stretch all the way in ny state. Tread with severe caution. These people are not friendly. They are imbred from years of isolation. They have shot at people and approached vehicles with weapons before. They also patrol the area with a make shift police officer of the community. It is a very strange place.
I wish Betty could have a little hobby for herself. She needs a bingo buddy in WV and someone to keep an eye on the others while she has a bingo night once a week. Seeing Lorraine bashful and pause in front of the womens’ undergarments section, Timmy getting his coloring book and holding up that onesie, Ray dressing up for the occasion, and Betty pulling/pushing the carts for her family. This entire video was tugging at my heartstrings.

I’ve noticed that Mark has such a rapport with this family, especially Timmy and Ray. When he wants to help them or correct them, such as when Ray wanted to put his belt on before paying for it, his voice is so calming and gentle. And Ray immediately responded with the right action. He put the belt on the counter. He shows them respect and acknowledges them, and they respond to him positively. These are not dumb people. Underdeveloped, uneducated and with disabilities in some family members, but they have common sense, respect and kindness in their hearts. And they love their dogs.
That's so true. People's immediate response to stuff like this is repulsion. But just a few minutes watching and listening to them they want to be treated like everyone else and in the day and age we live in all these people talking about inclusion the only kind of inclusion they want is for people's twisted sexual behaviors. This is the kind of inclusion that we need these look like genuinely good people who have some issues from their past upbringing and maybe have some disabilities and can't communicate well but give him the chance these are normal people that simply want to go to Walmart and get a microwave and go home they don't want people pointing at them and making fun of them.

Just an idea for Ray's knees. Ever hear of Ben-Gay? It's about $10 for a large tube & Wal*Mart, CVS, Walgreens & even most grocery stores have it. That really helps me when I have my arthritis flare ups. Sometimes sore knees can REALLY HURT MORE than people know. I feel bad that he can't communicate very well to tell how bad it's hurting! Also, another thing my brother discovered from his chiropractor is that Tonic Water has 'Quinine' in it - so buy Ray some Tonic Water & it will also help A LOT ( Trouble is, it tastes weird / sort of bitter & you have to develop a taste for it - but some people like me, like it & it works great!! Drink half a litre bottle & it works wonders for sore muscles due to arthritis! One more trick is a shot glass of half Southern Comfort with half honey in it & eat it with a spoon & it helps before bed time so he can sleep better, no lie! My Polish/Slovak Grandmother used to give me some before bed when I got bad knee pains, as young as 7 years old! The Doctor calls them "growing pains" no matter how old a person is - those ideas I mentioned ALL HELP!! And...if your wondering, I'm not an alcoholic ( some people jump to conclusions) but let me tell you when I was very little, Id lay in bed crying with terrible knee pain & it mostly happened in summer which is strange!? Mark, did you ever buy Ray some Advil?? Also, great for knee pain. - OR - Get a Doctor to call in some 300 mg. of Ibuprofin (for inflammation of knees shoulders, ankles & other joint pain! Love Your videos of this kind hearted family!! They might not have a lot but they know what love is! Love & Prayers to everyone in the Whitaker Family! They sure are good folks! They could certainly use some help regarding housework, making beds, do they have a place to shower or bathe? If they don't, thats a darn shame!! I know the summer weather gets REAL HUMID & IS TERRIBLEY HOT & SO MANY OF THEM ALL CRAMMED IN THAT LITTLE HOME MUST BE HARD.. unless they have a creek nearby to go swimming into cool off! Many women can those vegetables, etc. for winter, but since Betty is the only one that is taking such good care of everyone ( I'm sure she doesn't always have a mess in the kitchen bc that can happen to anyone - that's life-unless your wealthy & have a maid! Mark, I think Rey really appreciates how much you help him & I know he looks up at you like your a brother to him! The people are the best people & I feel bad for them. Towards the end when they asked Timmy “What store they went to?” He lit up when reminded it was Wal Mart. Then he said “It’s big!!” super clear. For some reason seeing his innocent joy in that moment made me happy. Guess I’m going soft.

he had me cracking up the whole time. knocking the chips display over 1 minute after getting into the store, smooshing the watermelon down in the cart on top of all his purchases, so excited about a coloring book, and animal pajamas. he is just precious! a 5 year old trapped in a mans body.
I got a tear in my eye when Loraine saw those pretty colored bras. I think she really wanted one. I hope she was able to find one for herself. It just shows that it is the little things in life that can bring us much joy. Thank you for sharing your kindness and spreading some joy in the world.
Me too😢I went and looked at my lingerie drawer and felt so ridiculous. I have enough for weeks on end and this sweet lady was mesmerized by all the pretty colors and would have loved to have just one. I hope she chose one and enjoys it. This really made me appreciate all my blessings and drove it home.

I am a behavioral health RN, and I went to nursing school in WV. I don't know if this comment will ever get seen by Mark, but I have been following SWU for several years. The videos of this beautiful family are so deeply heartwarming. I grew up in the NY area, so WV was a huge change for me. This family represents the simplicity, kindness, and gentleness of Appalachia.Watching Ray take Mark's hand...watching this family go through a huge store and pick out NECESSARY items when most would be greedy, the childlike play and wonder as they browse...my heart is so full from seeing all of the Whittaker videos. I am so thankful that they exist and that people like Mark exist. Compassion and empathy is EVERYTHING.

Needless to say people from the outside world are usually not very kind to them. I have family from eastern Kentucky that were still plowing with a mule and planting tobacco in the late 60s. Some relatives of my uncles were so poor they didn't even have a outhouse. His father Everett was completely illiterate and I'm not sure if he had ever been to school and his mother Suddy had a second grade education. That is the reason they came to Detroit was to break the cycle and escape that life and give their kids a chance. There are people living until this day in Appalachia who are worse off than so called 3rd world countries. Our government and charities go and help oversea and turn their heads and ignore the problems at home

Ray really needs to see a doctor. The behaviors/communication he's exhibiting shows how severe the pain in his knee is. He aimed to please during the visit, but his mannerisms and vocal abilities show us how much he is in pain. He's such a wonderful soul. I do hope he can get that assessed sooner than later.

This entire video was tugging at my heartstrings.

I’ve noticed that Mark has such a rapport with this family, especially Timmy and Ray. When he wants to help them or correct them, such as when Ray wanted to put his belt on before paying for it, his voice is so calming and gentle. And Ray immediately responded with the right action. He put the belt on the counter. He shows them respect and acknowledges them, and they respond to him positively. These are not dumb people. Underdeveloped, uneducated and with disabilities in some family members, but they have common sense, respect and kindness in their hearts. And they love their dogs.

But just a few minutes watching and listening to them they want to be treated like everyone else and in the day and age we live in all these people talking about inclusion the only kind of inclusion they want is for people's twisted sexual behaviors. This is the kind of inclusion that we need these look like genuinely good people who have some issues from their past upbringing and maybe have some disabilities and can't communicate well but give him the chance these are normal people that simply want to go to Walmart and get a microwave and go home they don't want people pointing at them and making fun of them.

Just an idea for Ray's knees. Ever hear of Ben-Gay? It's about $10 for a large tube & Wal*Mart, CVS, Walgreens & even most grocery stores have it. That really helps me when I have my arthritis flare ups. Sometimes sore knees can REALLY HURT MORE than people know. I feel bad that he can't communicate very well to tell how bad it's hurting! Also, another thing my brother discovered from his chiropractor is that Tonic Water has 'Quinine' in it - so buy Ray some Tonic Water & it will also help A LOT ( Trouble is, it tastes weird / sort of bitter & you have to develop a taste for it - but some people like me, like it & it works great!! Drink half a litre bottle & it works wonders for sore muscles due to arthritis! One more trick is a shot glass of half Southern Comfort with half honey in it & eat it with a spoon & it helps before bed time so he can sleep better, no lie! My Polish/Slovak Grandmother used to give me some before bed when I got bad knee pains, as young as 7 years old! The Doctor calls them "growing pains" no matter how old a person is - those ideas I mentioned ALL HELP!! And...if your wondering, I'm not an alcoholic ( some people jump to conclusions) but let me tell you when I was very little, Id lay in bed crying with terrible knee pain & it mostly happened in summer which is strange!? Mark, did you ever buy Ray some Advil?? Also, great for knee pain. - OR - Get a Doctor to call in some 300 mg. of Ibuprofin (for inflammation of knees shoulders, ankles & other joint pain! Love Your videos of this kind hearted family!! They might not have a lot but they know what love is! Love & Prayers to everyone in the Whitaker Family! They sure are good folks! They could certainly use some help regarding housework, making beds, do they have a place to shower or bathe? If they don't, thats a darn shame!! I know the summer weather gets REAL HUMID & IS TERRIBLEY HOT & SO MANY OF THEM ALL CRAMMED IN THAT LITTLE HOME MUST BE HARD.. unless they have a creek nearby to go swimming into cool off! Also, they ABSOLUTELY DESERVE A NICE PORCH WITH CHAIRS & WINDOWS - A LOT OF FOLKS IN W.VA LOVE TO SIT OUT ON THE PORCH & JUST CHAT WITH ONE ANOTHER & TYPICALLY NEIGHBORS COME BY TO VISIT. There's a lot of brotherly love back east. Neighbors watch out for each other & if they have gardens, they share their food it produces. Many women can those vegetables, etc. for winter, but since Betty is the only one that is taking such good care of everyone ( I'm sure she doesn't always have a mess in the kitchen bc that can happen to anyone - that's life-unless your wealthy & have a maid! Mark, I think Rey really appreciates how much you help him & I know he looks up at you like your a brother to him! The people are the best people & I feel bad for them. I am a behavioral health RN, and I went to nursing school in WV. I don't know if this comment will ever get seen by Mark, but I have been following SWU for several years. The videos of this beautiful family are so deeply heartwarming. I grew up in the NY area, so WV was a huge change for me. This family represents the simplicity, kindness, and gentleness of Appalachia.Watching Ray take Mark's hand...watching this family go through a huge store and pick out NECESSARY items when most would be greedy, the childlike play and wonder as they browse...my heart is so full from seeing all of the Whittaker videos. I am so thankful that they exist and that people like Mark exist. Compassion and empathy is EVERYTHING.

The one brother who now lives in the shed beside them that they met at Walmart never was on video before. They were very skeptical at first.

It’s clear that Mark is a genuine and compassionate person, but what I think a lot of people overlook is just what he’s doing for the people that aren’t in the videos. He’s giving the rest of the world well enough off to have access to TH-cam a healthy dose of perspective. What most people that I know perceive as problems are really just minor inconveniences. I appreciate what he does, for many reasons, not the least of which is reminding me to stay humble.
