    I'm really impressed with this review... I have the Solo Stove and the 900 pot and one concern I had was that the 900 pot lids top finger tab/handle wouldn't stay vertical...didn't realize there was a notch just for this purpose until you pointed it out in this vid....Thank you so much for the info...plan on getting the Titan now...

      Thanks! That's definitely a great feature on the lid, though it's small enough to miss/overlook! I'd highly recommend the Titan!! Thanks for watching my video :-)

    Hey Brandon!
    This is a reverted/double combustion/wood gasification stove !
    It is not used like other stoves (actually can be but you loose the main advantages).
    It burns from top to bottom, so you put the big pieces to bottom and the thin starters at the top, without trespassing the hole circle.
    You don't need to make a camp fire in it, it works perfectly with little, this is one of the main advantages.

    • @OutdoorSurvivalists
      @OutdoorSurvivalists  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the reply. Yes, I'm pretty familiar with it. It's always worked pretty well... and I do generally do as you suggested, putting the thicker pieces at the bottom with smaller stuff up top to get it burning downward. Attempting to cook with these stoves, while adding wood and maintaining the right cooking temps are not always easy... it's certainly easier just bringing a pot of water to a boil.

      Thanks!
      You are right. Cooking with wood fueled stoves is trickier but it's the funniest and the real deal for the real trekkers.
      If it is about Solos, for cooking I recommend the Bonfire (which already has the cast iron grill as an accessory). For car campers, of course.

    • @OutdoorSurvivalists
      @OutdoorSurvivalists  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Efendi_Bass If I'm going to cook while car camping, I always just use the fire ring/grill that's at the campsite. Either that or I'll cook over our Coleman propane stove. I've only used my smallest Solo Stove while hiking on the Appalachian Trail once, but the next time I chose my little single burner pack stove with an MSR tank or a smaller titanium stand with a Weber fire cube (as a backup). I've thought of using alcohol stoves, but never pulled the trigger. There's a million different ways of cooking... and they're all pretty fun. 😁

    Great Review!! Thanks for the dish soap tip! I just bought the Titan. Got tired of hauling a propane bottle around and the alcohol burner will work with denatured alcohol for those wet-wood moments.

    • @OutdoorSurvivalists
      @OutdoorSurvivalists  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You're welcome! I think you'll really like it as an optional stove! I actually used Webber Fire Cubes (used for lighting BBQ grills) as a fire starter in my Solo Stoves, if I happen to have damp semi-dry wood to work with. Each cube tends to burn independently for about 8-12 min's, which is usually enough time to get small stuff burning and a little starter coal bed going to dry out the bigger stuff. The cubes also burn when wet (even floating in water), so they're a good fire starter.

    Great video! I have an old Coleman 550 Peak 1 stove i'm looking to buy a Solo 1800 pot and nest the stove inside it. The pot description says 14 CM (5.5 inches) diameter do you know if that is the exact INTERIOR diameter of the pot? If those dimensions are for the interior the stove will snugly fit if its for the exterior it will not. As my only option is to buy it online i can't actually handle one myself to see. I don't want to spend $50 on the pot if its too small for my stove. Any info regarding the interior dimensions would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

    Solo Stove is the way to go for me - the Butane Burners are fast but negate themselves due to the weight of the Butane Canisters -I'd rather have the reliability and flexibility of the Solo Stove and being able to fire up anywhere without the weight penalty.

    • @OutdoorSurvivalists
      @OutdoorSurvivalists  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I hear ya! I think each play a role in my trips. Sometimes my butane/propane stove is a better option, while on other trips, my Solo Stove is better suited. You just have to go with whatever will make the most sense on your particular trip.

    The system looks good. The price is...high-ish, but not unreasonable. It's too high to buy, and decide that you don't like it. It's not too high, if it suits your needs, and you use it. The question becomes what is the right size to buy. ?The 900 pot+stove looks small, especially if you're not solo. It also looks small to use with a 2nd pot or pan, like seagull 1.1 L MSR Stowaway pot, or a fry pan.

    • @OutdoorSurvivalists
      @OutdoorSurvivalists  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It is on the higher side, which may not be beneficial if you are unsure how much you'll use it. If you are sure, and based on your comments of not just cooking for yourself, I'd suggest looking at the Solo Stove Titan instead of the original Solo Stove. The Titan is plenty big to cook larger meals on and should work better with a frying pan or larger pot.

    Hi man, great video, thx for sharing, went ahead and ordered the titan set, just wondering how do you clean the ash from the ash tray since there is no drawer system installed, I assume by turning it upside down when it cools sufficiently but that area can never be cleaned properly since it has that steel screen. What is your take on it man? Cheers

    • @OutdoorSurvivalists
      @OutdoorSurvivalists  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks so much! I think you'll really like it a lot... as far as the ash, I don't normally have much (if any) at all. Due to the design, they have such a great complete burn that normally there isn't any ash left if you've given it enough time to burn the solid fuel. The pan and wire screen will be colored from the heat, but what little ash is stuck to the wires, I just leave. It doesn't even smell like smoke much at all when you're done using it.

    • @antouab221
      @antouab221 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @OutdoorSurvivalists

      It's stainless steel, so it's probably less likely to dent than other metals. However, like with anything, it likely depends on how hard you are on your gear. I've never used cast iron on mine, so I'm unsure how the pot holders would hold up to the weight over time. I tend to cook with lightweight pots & pans that are made with stainless, aluminum, or titanium.

If I'm sharing it with 1-2 others, then definitely the Titan is my go-to as it holds more wood and burns longer. If I'm car camping and there is no existing fire pit, I'll use my Campfire for the same premise as above.
      I don't own the Ranger or the Bonfire, so I can't really compare or speak to those.

    Never heard of Top Lid Up Draft stoves? Aka T.L.U.D., aka woodgas, gasifier, pyrogas, pyrolitic burner?
    Try using woodpellets: fill the burner to one inch under the secondary holes line and light up on the surface of fuel. Then wait a couple of minutes and you'll see how solo stove works!

    • @OutdoorSurvivalists
      @OutdoorSurvivalists  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, sure have. Though I've seen them used, I've never used wood pellets before. I think that would be fine for use here at the house during an emergency, but it kinda takes away from the purpose of the Solo Stoves... that you can use any wood source laying around, wherever you happen to be. I likely wouldn't carry wood pellets around with me for a fuel source. I might check them out though for home use.

    • @nicodanger13
      @nicodanger13 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you use little pieces of chopped dry branches you can use in the right pyrogas way this stove in nature. And stoves like Solo, in a place with no wind, produces highly clean, hot and durable flames.. and charcoal. :-)

    • @OutdoorSurvivalists
      @OutdoorSurvivalists  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Nico Danger Good tip! None of the Solo Stoves create charcoal because of the secondary burn. It all turns to ash.

    • @nicodanger13
      @nicodanger13 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Not exactly. Woodgas stoves. if charged the right way and lighted from the top, create charcoal because of secondary air that burn gasses from wood. This process is called pyrolisys and produces a lot of gasses and a big flame more yellow than blue. In this moment wood become charcoal. THEN, when this gasification process reach the bottom of the fuel charge, the stove burns charcoal with a little blue flame.. If you stop the flames when they change, closing the primary air holes with removed topsoil, you have charcoal. So, it's more exact say: "solo stoves, and similar, produces charcoal but burns it to ash because of the PRIMARY burn :-)

      William Farmer - I'd only recommend taking it with you in a pack if it were an emergency or a survival situation. Otherwise, it's a bit too heavy (IMO) for general hikes. The regular Solo Stove would work perfect for hiking during a week/weekend trip. This one would be better suited for car camping or a base camp... unless you really want it with you for your group while hiking and split it up with someone else's gear to make it more manageable. I don't know if I'd personally go that route. I'm still glad to have it though!

My Osprey was packed out to about 48lbs with water during my hike on the A.P. a couple months ago... so I'm definitely going to try to cut my pack weight down to at least half that (wishful thinking) for next time. If you're cooking large meals and/or for a lot of people, this is the stove!

    • @OutdoorSurvivalists
      @OutdoorSurvivalists  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      nlo114 Well if you fill it like that, then I suppose so. But it will still burn down, regardless. Soot will happen no matter what because you're turning your fuel into carbon. I don't drink, but if that floats your boat, have at it. 😃 Not everywhere I hike or camp at allows campfire. This is still a good alternative...

    • @nlo114
      @nlo114 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Please don't take offence, it was an observation rather than a criticism :-) With most of them the instructions say 'fill to below level of holes', but most users I've seen on youtube just pile the wood up regardless of instruction. The only ones that do follow the instructions appear to use wood pellets.
