  • Noco Genius 1 is an entry level battery charger from the well known and respected NOCO company who is known to be the leader in battery chargers.
    I am truly impressed by this tiny and very effective battery charger.
    For the price, features and how good it is compared to my Harbor Freight Viking more expensive charger, this NOCO Genius 1 is amazing.

    I live in a place where power outages sometimes arrive by surprise.
    I was planning to get a Sealed Lead Acid battery (or similar) with a small inverter, to power some lights and fans during a power outage, and I was wondering how can I keep a battery charged all the time in case of emergencies but won't overcharge/ruin the battery. Also shouldn't use a lot of electricity during it's 'maintaining charge' stage when it's full.
    Can I use this at home to keep a batt constantly charged, in case of power outages? But won't overcharge my batt?

    @3:50 This is REALLY good info to know about this charger, i was expecting it to be faster, but after learning more about it and how it charges its i feel fine about it. for the price you cant beat it !! im running a Optima red top and it was at about 3.5v. after charger for 18 hours its at 7.2v.
    it was super dead.... but it is bring it back to live slowly !!
    I heard you had to have these smart chargers to truely charge the AGM batteries fully and properly
    so far so good! now i think im gunna buy some of those leads i can hook up to the bettery while its in the car so i can just plug it in when its parked

    I bought this charger because Amazon could literally deliver it within 7 hours. It was 9pm on a Saturday night. Sure enough 4:15am and there it was. I’ve charged everything from riding mower batteries all the way up to deep cycle marine batteries and this thing performs very well. One of my most valued gadgets. $30 bucks well spent.

    I liked this little charger so much, I purchased the Noco Genius 10 amp. I had to purchase a new motorcycle battery because the old one would not hold a charge, and so bought this 1 amp charger for my new lithium battery. For grins and giggles, I hooked up the 10 amp charger to my old defective 12V AGM motorcycle battery, put it on repair mode, and don’t ya know? It charged up fine. Ran it down to local auto parts store, they checked it out, ran a load test and PERFECT! Car has been sitting in my garage close to a year with dead battery. Hooked the NOCO 10amp, repair mode, few hours later…FIXED! Contacted NOCO and asked about warranty for their chargers bought on Amazon. No problem, it’s covered under warranty. YMMV, but I’m sold on them. Most I ever got out of Battery Tender was a couple years max, and have been through a few of them.

    For future reference, you're supposed to connect the charger to the Battery BEFORE you plug in the AC Adapter, thats what it says to do in the manual anyway.
    And keep in mind this only charges at 15w 1Amp, so depending on the state of the battery it can take DAYS to charge the battery.

  • @Ironfangzu

    Simply the best, easy to use charger you can buy. Literally clamp the red clip to the red terminal, then black to black. Now, plug it in, and you are done. It is not fast, but what's the hurry? You plug it in after work, and by the next morning, the square light in the middle is either green (fully charged) or still red. If red, go to work, come home later, and plug it in again. By the next morning, the light is almost certainly green. If you don't drive a lot on weekends, plug this thing in Friday evening, and on Monday morning that little light will be green and your battery will feel brand new.

    I had a Genius 2 supplying the AGM battery on my ONAN standby generator. Generally it worked okay for a couple of days and then went to sleep and allows the battery to discharge. It worked okay as long as I unplugged it for a few seconds every couple of days. That was okay for 6 months or so but then it started not to recognize that the battery was fully charged and started boosting the voltage up to the 14's which had already killed one AGM battery. I replaced it with my NOCO Genius 5 and it is okay for now, but I don't see a NOCO in my long term stand by charging future.

    • @rednexium4100

      AGM batteries are designed to require 14.6v - 14.8v when performing a full charge from a state of discharge, whereas standard lead acid batteries need 13.8v - 14.4v, hence this is what most onboard chargers are designed to deliver - not the 14.6v - 14.8v that AGM requires.

      I connect it per instructions and it just flashes red and green for a few minutes then shuts off. Instructions Don’t even mention what that means. It tells you to press and hold for 3seconds. When I do that it goes to the next battery mode, which is wrong for me. They may think this one button set up is simple, but it’s confusing. I am now tempted to use another brand with separate on/off and mode selector buttons.

    • @jaycee1373
      @jaycee1373 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Prolificposter Which light is flashing red and which light is flashing green, and what type battery are you trying to charge? Sounds like you entered FORCE MODE by holding the down the MODE button for 5 seconds or longer, and then chose a mode (I.e. 12v, 12v AGM, Lithium). In FORCE MODE, the Charge Mode LED (item 1 in the NOCO manual diagram) and Charge LED (Item 5 in the diagram ) will alternately flash, indicating Force Mode is active. It might be shutting off because of a protective circuit, or the unit or something with the battery is defective.
      Holding down the MODE button for 3 seconds is for one thing, and one thing only, and that is to enter 6V mode. You know you have done it right when the last LED on the right of the MODE row lights up white. It’s possible you have a defective unit. NOCO has a good warranty, and/or return it where you purchased it, or call or online chat. They are very helpful.

    Good review, but if I bought a Noco charger it would be a Noco Genius 5 or 10 as it has a repair mode that sends 16 volt spikes to the battery to desulfate it. I also like Pulsetech chargers and desulfators, PulseTech uses a patented frequency to desulfate a battery and states that it can extend the battery life up to three times using a PowerPulse passive desulfator attached to the battery in the vehicle.

      I resent the fact they are calling this a battery charger. False advertising in my opinion. This little thing can only deliver 1 amp max, so if you have a battery that has a 300 amp hour capacity, expect it to take approximately 300 hours to charge. That being said, it is a really good battery maintainer. I've used it on my RV to maintain the coach batteries, which are large capacity deep cycle batteries, and it has done fine with them.

What I do is simply remove one of the cables from the battery post which I guess breaks the circuit and then just reconnect it when I want to drive. With a battery this close to dead, you will probably have to have the thing plugged in for 48 hours. But it should power the battery back up so that it can start the car, and you can move it the 100 ft. It's only $30, so that beats buying a new battery for sure.

    Be aware that a 1 amp battery charger is not optimal for a car or truck battery. It's more suited for a motorcycle. What it will do, is maintain the battery, so that it does not completely deplete. Keep in mind that all batteries have a service life. If that battery is at the end of it's useful life, no battery charger will renew it. No battery can last forever. If you have a motorcycle, car, or truck that you don't drive a lot, this device will be just right. Keep the battery plugged in between drives. If you have some old, dead battery; don't expect this device to make that battery new again. The other thing to note, is that while you may be able to charge a battery - that battery may not hold a charge. I've personally seen batteries reach a full charge state, only for it to rapidly deplete once placed into service.

    So, does the battery have to be out of the car to charge?

    • @DIYGEEKTEXAS
      @DIYGEEKTEXAS  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, it is better for the battery to be disconnected from the car, especially for its maintenance features. However I would not be surprised if NOCO Genius 1 can detect if car/truck is still connected and it will probably just try to charge the battery only.

    Could you leave the battery in the car and use this device under the hood as a trickle charger?

    • @Ironfangzu
      @Ironfangzu ปีที่แล้ว

      That's mostly how it's used. I have an older car that during the winter seems to be struggling a bit. I used this charger, clamp the clips right to the battery under the hood, and in 36-48 hours the light turns green and the battery now starts the car with power to spare.

    • @DIYGEEKTEXAS
      @DIYGEEKTEXAS  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It is probably a defective battery you may want to de sulfate it. Drain exiting water, refill with clean distilled water and desulfate at least 2 times. Replace the water again. And then try to recharge.

    • @kevinbhar9210

    • @DIYGEEKTEXAS
      @DIYGEEKTEXAS  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@kevinbhar9210 Gel batteries are basically sealed lead-acid batteries. They do not have to be maintained, but that also mean you can not try to replace the gel or water. Basically one damaged you can not fix them yourself.

      @jaycee1373 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Which light is flashing red and which light is flashing green, and what type battery are you trying to charge?

    Why don't you read the manual before making the video. The reason it took so long is because the Noco Genius 1 is only a 1Amp charger. For a car battery you need the Genius 5. 🙄

    Glad yours works. Mine did for a while, then a month or so later, and it will not charge. And this is testing multiple batteries from daily driver cars.
    So I bought another one off Amazon, and right out of the box, same thing. Will not charge. You push the button and it just stays on standby.
    And yes, the connections are good. The batteries are good I know, because I drive the cars. Even in force mode it will only flash green and red. No charging.
