For me, I gained a good amount of perspective from this presentation. It's taken a lifetime to begin to experience the positive side of having ADHD. I didn't know I had this difference in terms of a diagnosis, I'd just lived so many decades knowing I certainly "had something" that made me different from others. I laughed as Mr. Idem used the example of "bouncers" in a nightclub and not having enough of them to keep things functioning in the bar, as in one's brain not having a good filter system....so everything is getting through. Of course, to each his own, I had the perspective that this guy had something to share that was authentic. So, I am surprised to see people compelled to be so critical of the presentation. One thing is certain, adults who have struggled over decades with ADHD have much potential if they learn some new way to be successful in their lives. It's not too late....especially in terms of the benefit from coaching. As well, medications are so much better than years ago. For all who get discouraged, open up to support from folks like this speaker, he is very genuinely helpful.

There's not less people with ADHD in France. It's just that our medical institutions have been denying its existence for decades and we are nowadays late in diagnosing it compared to other countries.
Better an under diagnosis than an over diagnosis where people who are not ADHD are diagnosed just because they "act" like they have ADHD. This does a disservice to us with ADHD because people take it less seriously because they see it as an excuse rather than a problem.
Adhd is caused by underdeveloped frontal lobe. It's always been a problem. Our brains are less evolved in certain areas. It's a developmemtal learning disability and in the same family as deslyexia, autism, aspbergers etc
It is ONLY a disability as a result of the current academic institution's teaching style. If anything is less evolved it is THAT. The fact that they do not have dynamic teaching to teach to each students learning style just shows that our teachers are more concerned with shifting blame and blaming the students instead of learning how to teach better. We as people with ADHD are not "less evolved". We just have a difference in thinking and processing information which can give us advantages in other areas.
7:50 This part where he's in the middle of an explanation that goes off into a minor tangent which he then further elaborates unnecessarily on while stumbling a little bit makes me feel so much better about doing that all the time. I can't help it lol
Not everyone with ADHD has high energy. In fact many have “sluggish cognitive tempo”. That crucial difference makes most of this talk inapplicable to most adults with ADHD. Furthermore, while a trait like hyper focus may be beneficial in the narrow confines of a project-based work environment, it is a serious hindrance to a broadly successful life. You do well in one project while falling behind in preparing for the next thing, in managing your household and family, and health and sleep. I would guess this speaker is single and keeps his life outside work very simple. Most adults with ADHD are chronically overwhelmed.
@@kathy2888 Agreed. At least for me, the "fluctuation of energy" is the part I've found most difficult to manage, I frequently find myself lacking energy and this has been an issue for me since as long as I can remember....

I got diagnosed at 40. So much of the other aspects of ADHD that are seen in and out schools make so much more sense now. I got to the point I was asking if I was bipolar. Turns out that my generosity, kindness, strong sense of justice, emotional instability, lack of filter and major inconsistency with things like different modules are all linked with ADHD.
O have extremely severe adhd and I still think I’m bi polar all the time… but then remind myself not to jump to conclusions but often I still don’t know.
I have two VERY high energy kids... It is a positive. Impulsivity was generally positive in my life because I lept into many situations where I might have failed or without worrying at all and was able to expand my life a lot. I gravitate to situations where I have to think on my feet because it validates my abilities ...
I love his display of how it can be for someone with ADHD to express themselves. His little tangents are so me! Hahah. I think English not being his first language is what would have made it more of a struggle for him here. I love the positive way of looking at ADHD!
I liked Thomas' positvity. The fact that he was diagnosed in middle age meant he'd experienced a variety of jobs, making his life interesting. An earlier diagnosis may have given him helpful coaching and meds to manage his ADHD, but it's great to hear someone celebrate their ADHD rather than share their regrets about a late diagnosis. It's what we make of life, alongside our so-called ADHD limitations, that makes us remarkable people. I was diagnosed at 58 but I refuse to look back with regret at the long list of jobs and relationships I've rushed into and stumbled out of, because we do our best. Maybe not getting the top jobs or earning top salary gives us a freedom which is refreshing. We can slow down and discover who we are and what suits us best.
Love his courage! Lakota here and ADHD-The internet saved me in many ways! However, structuring and writing whatever, poetry, dates, numbers, doodling also helps! Attention Deficit is the wrong phrase-should say “ Attention Different “!
I have severe ADHD. ADHD is so misunderstood by society and because it is on a spectrum symptoms have some variance. He is not conveying any of that and ADHD should not be looked at as another type of brain or thinking. ADHD is swept under the rug and has very severe disabilities when not diagnosed or treated properly. It is not cured, only managed. ADHDers have x2 rate of suicide, obesity, contracting an STI, being divorced or dying due to an accident, all because of an underdeveloped frontal lobe and regulatory system. His message is meant to be hopeful but it is dismissive and tells nuerotypical brains to not worry about us. Worry about us. Many of us need help.
ADHD doesn’t have advantages in modern society. People find niches where it works or more likely they find work arounds as they get older. It often sucks.
This is classic ADHD and shows that these children are different to children from the past. The book by Thom Hartmann "ADHD and the Edison Gene" is saying these kids are a throwback to HUNTER culture as opposed to the rest of us "farmers." Farmers are patient while their crops grow, they spend a good part of the day planting and doing chores. Hunters on the other hand spend a few hours a day on high alert for prey, eat it and have the rest of the day for other things. In the case of Edison who was one of these kids, his mother allowed him to explore the topics he wanted to learn about and the result has changed the entire world. The boy Liam saw a bird and had to chase it without concern for traffic dangers. They are watching and alert and spoken instructions go unnoticed. There is the predator. They are not able to be comfortable in confined spaces like classrooms. They are seen by the world as misfits and "bad", but it is very important to give them some respect for being who they are. This book gives parents and children HOPE that there is a way to help them. They are best taught in home school situations with tutors or small classrooms. Regular schools are based on the farmer kids. Montessori or Waldorf schools manage these children the best as kids are less controlled. A hunter is NOT controllable as he/she must turn quickly to catch prey, must watch the environment and be aware of all that is around to deal with danger. The drug answer only creates more problems for these kids. But in the end they are highly creative as Edison proved, and drugs and constantly denigrating them is killing perhaps the future geniuses of our society. This would be a tragedy.
Brenon 0 it’s cool, I’m hyper focused on TH-cam rn But hey OP, the only reason we take drugs is to function in a society that wasn’t made for us and is not gonna change in our lifetimes. Some of us can’t cope without medication. There are other ways to manage symptoms to live with it, but some people aren’t afforded the time and know all to build these mindfulness habits. And even with them it’s really hard to plan your day and finish your goals when you’re too busy living life and taking everything in as you go. And quickly forgetting the mundane
What the ....what a load of rot ....they just have a higher IQ and run a higher frequency. It's the rest of the population that are slow and behind the 8 ball and hold these people back ...there is no need for patients a adhd person already is of doing something els and will be back at the right time to sort what ever needs to be done no need for patients as the person has other things to sort out.there in a world that is dumbed down for them
I found this very interesting. I'm 63......I understood everything he said. I especially liked the term ADHD'ish.......😃 I was that kid who was always looking out the window.....but when the teacher would call on me for a question.....I could answer it because all that time I was listening to every word she or he was saying. The point of hyper-focusing was but it is also important to have 'peripheral-focusing:' in other words writing down the other thoughts going through my head, and prioritizing them.
The advantage of the videos is that I can stop them and return them according to my ADHD and thus be able to attend to all the things that cross my mind and the impulses that come out of nowhere. I wonder, what work could I do effectively in this world? How could I take advantage of this disadvantage called disorder, condition or whatever it is called? The bills arrive on time, and I'm not always ready for the demands of this world. For what other people are easy to do every day, I find it a daily challenge navigating between frustration and stress to fulfill the essential, leaving me exhausted and with a feeling of suffocation and that I have not been enough. I have disappointed many people throughout my life, and when I have tried to solve it, I only complicate the situation, then I end up sad and withdrawn feeling with that peculiar sense of failure. It's just me?
Once learned to manage it and have people around without hurting them it could work. People are ok but they cant forgive the insults and the anger outbursts. So as long as adhd brain stops insulting....we could manage
The speaker says that hyperactivity means you have energy, impulsivity means you're flexible, and hyperfocus means you can focus. That's about it. There's little detail and no usable information.
The usable information is to change the language of how we define ADHD. If we go through life knowing we have ADHD thinking we are hyperactive, inattentive and impulsive (by the way impulsive is flexible not inattention) then we carry these negative thoughts about ourselves because others associate these negative traits to us. For most of us with ADHD these words are show stoppers and leave us to believe we cannot be successful. The whole POINT on changing the language is to give people with ADHD a new perspective about our condition. Instead of seeing them as negative traits we can change the language and see them as positive traits that can lead to success. ADHD is not the problem. People's attitude towards ADHD is the problem.
apteryx01 and that the path of thriving with adhd is to accept that these are traits with two sides. His talk is valuable because it reminds the person that adhd is a terrible name for adhd
@ASwiftBird: I agree with you that "ADHD" is a terrible name for ADHD. It just doesn't make any sense. About the topic of the talk, have you come across anyone who's thrived with ADHD by accepting that their traits have two sides? Everyone I know who's been diagnosed with ADHD has been quick to point out that there are advantages as well as disadvantages, but that never helped them. What's helped is doing specific things, learning specific skills, and taking specific drugs to help counter or prevent the negative stuff: the impulsive actions, the brain fog, the annoying behaviors, the tantrums, the unpaid bills, the firings from jobs, the projects abandoned for lack of persistence, etc. One caveat: ADHD is so vaguely defined, a diagnosis borders on meaningless. It's much clearer to say that someone is impulsive, perseverative, having difficulty concentrating, or whatever. If you say "This person impulsively responded to a wisecrack by throwing a punch and went to jail", that's a lot clearer than "This person has ADHD". And you won't be led into thinking that their jail time could have been prevented by calling ADHD or impulsiveness by a different name or by accepting that their traits have two sides. The jail time was due to throwing the punch, and they threw the punch because they acted impulsively.
apteryx01 Very well said. You're right that adhd is just a poorly categorized label for a broad range of behavioral patterns However, when it comes to thriving with adhd, coming to terms with it first can be a crucial step in your journey, where accepting and embracing and understanding your two sided traits can encourage you to pursuing better habits and lifestyles that are more constructive to your traits To thrive with adhd, you gotta get real with it, which includes embracing it as well as learning to find a way to make it work for you And there are a lot of people who need to be reminded that there is nothing wrong with them, that they're not broken. There is a path for them as well and that they've already been walking on it and they're exactly where they gotta be right now
I was going to post nearly the same thing. Almost a waste of time. All of the useful information was at the very end and didn’t dive deep enough to help much.
High IQ + ADHD is bomb! Your thoughts ski through neurons and you are having awesome experience every single moment, because you avoid boring moments. Maybe I have weak ADHD because I can remember what conversation is about and I continue in natural, creative way because I put ideas and thoughts that I processed while he/she was talking into the conversation. I like to play chess, but I go crazy if I only play chess :P I need to listen to some interview/audiobook while playing chess, or I need to play with friend while drinking coffee/tea and talk about interesting topics. I am working on programming business, and I can imagine how much fun I will have when I start to travel the world :P ADHD is blessing because you are never bored. Books can be tricky to read though. I can read them, however I prefer audiobooks. Notice how I shift from topic to topic in my comment. I love this ADHD drug.

Having a high Iq and adhd is a problem when you are made to study things that you don't want to, because people used to believe that you were so smart, and then two years you are nowhere near the mark everyone expected you to be at and they just tell you to focus more and just try harder
I feel like I'm on ectasy most of the time except for when I burnout but then I just let myself relax and never judge myself as much a possible. I've only just realised that I have it but I wouldn't change it for the world.
I didnt even last 30 seconds before I gave up lol. It may be about adhd people but its not for adhd people. At this point most people understand what add/adhd is like, the day to day, the symptoms. When will one of these guys tell me something about it that I dont know, like how to make it go tf away so I can stop taking speed everyday and hopefully not have a heart attack by the age of 35
Your problem is that you are not listening. Don't blame your ADHD mind for that. There is a difference in listening and paying attention. You didn't give up 30 seconds into this video because you weren't paying attention. You gave up on this video because you didn't agree with what he had to say. Truth is there is no off button for ADHD. You're just going to have to learn to deal with it. And in order to deal with it you're going to have to learn to listen to these people and accept the reality of ADHD.
Being born with ADHD makes you inclined to become an addict, but being predisposed doesn't mean being an addict. It doesn't make you an addict, you do. Go to therapy. And Find something productive to harness that energy on.

He gave an amazing message but unfortunately speaking a 2nd language paired with adhd makes it incredibly difficult to articulate your point (speaking from experience 😅). But basically what he’s saying is that the way professionals are trained to deal with adhd is by telling people they have a disorder and prescribing drugs to make you “normal”. But what we need to do is change the words used to describe the symptoms to something with a more positive connotation. In that we can stop looking at it as a disorder and start seeing it as nothing more than a rare genetic difference that can be regulated and utilized as a powerful asset. Hence all the celebrities with adhd.
@boligenic8118 The whole point of the video is that the "definition" isn't even definitive. It's just our understanding of the genetic variation up until this point. That's why he's calling to reasses our understanding of what it really is. The reason it causes issues in people's lives isn't because the person isn't "normal", it's because our society has been designed to benefit the majority. That's why I mentioned that many celebrities have the "disorder". Many of them struggled to find success in a classroom or office and yet when they found a path that better suits their needs they became hyper-successful
I got diagnosed a few months ago and started medication. I honestly miss being able to think of so many things during the day and in conversations. Naming France as a good example is horrifying !! France is easily 20 Years behind on following the actual research and facts and the reason there are so few diagnosis isn't because there are less people with it but simply cause the health system ignores it. If you are not diagnosed when you're a kid and get a diagnose later in live you will not get meds for it, even getting a diagnosis is a struggle for most. I live in Germany and got family in France, once I got my diagnosis I realized how prevalent it is within my family over there, it literally killed my father, yet none of them will be able to get the proper treatment. The rate of adhs within the population isn't constant but thinking that one european country may have a fraction of another is ridiculous, the world wide average is pretty constant the difference is only in the diagnosis, not the prevalance. I'm not one of those who think the positive sides of adhd shouldnt be focused on too much, but there is actual danger of a one sided narrative, adhd is on a spectrum and while some may be able to live with it, others will struggle through live with constant depression, anxiety, panic attacks, ptsd, addiction etc. Some stats for that side of the argument: chance to die before 45 is 4 times higher, substance abuse and addiction 4 times more likely, getting into car accidents and others up to 5 times more likely, developing major psychological issues is nearly universal etc. I got lucky many times and am in a stable, well paying job where my adhd is the reason I am able to make it but that doesnt mean adhs hasn't had a major impact on my life.

Find out how you were when you were younger, it is usually diagnosed very young as was I and it seems alot of people like to self diagnose themselves alot on TH-cam videos and would add it's not good to have especially for teens
Ok, here's the real answer. I was diagnosed with adhd when i was 5 or so. Here's how they test it. Generally, this is diagnosed at a younger age, since symptoms are very obvious. I believe that in order to be diagnosed, you must match-test positive with 5 of 7 categories. First off, childhood symptoms, psychoeducational test, family history, psychiatric assessment DSM-IV criteria (interview) and questionnaire. You may not be diagnosed with it, as it is just a little harder to see in adults.
I think the most common mistake that people make with adhd is that they think they can recognise it. Because you have been fed this image of the very few of them that suffer from it, instead of thrive with it, which is the majority, hence you don't recognise it and nor do i. Only some experts do or the people that knoe what it is like. The 2nd would be calling it a disorder, because how many neurotypicall people do you know are that have a disfunction in a certain way or area? Probably allot, including yourself.

The bar is SUCH a good metaphor for an ADHD MIND
Would you summarise this for us please, I don't understand what he's trying to say which is normal for me until watch this twice or thrice. Whats the superpower/good thing about adhd??
@@ggll5240we have A LOT of energy. If we can direct that energy into something we are passionate about, we have the ability to hyperfocus. If we hyperfocus „hard work“ doesn‘t seem like hard work.

@@ggll5240 very late answer, it’s been two years but for anyone reading the comments, in answer to your question, hyper focus is my superpower, I can barely make it through a normal day but I am highly creative and find answers to problems that no one else can solve, and it is so easy for me. There's not less people with ADHD in France. It's just that our medical institutions have been denying its existence for decades and we are nowadays late in diagnosing it compared to other countries.
Adrien Chauvet That's just really sad.
ADHD was actually positively selected for evolutionarily. So you might say we're more evolved than those without ADHD

You nailed in. LOL.

ADHD is a gift.
My attention span : "I wish videos would just get to the main points"
NanaR504, if you read through all of this and have adhd you are superhuman!
Brenon 0 it’s cool, I’m hyper focused on TH-cam rn
But hey OP, the only reason we take drugs is to function in a society that wasn’t made for us and is not gonna change in our lifetimes.

"Hyperactivity is irrelevant but Creativity is relevant" - Me
There is such a thing as internalised hyperactivity
Once learned to manage it and have people around without hurting them it could work. People are ok but they cant forgive the insults and the anger outbursts. So as long as adhd brain stops insulting....we could manage
We are divergent you guys just accept it and embrace it as it is
The speaker says that hyperactivity means you have energy, impulsivity means you're flexible, and hyperfocus means you can focus.
@Bruno Vic: Oops, thanks for the correction about which thing he was saying means you're flexible. I just corrected it above.
apteryx01 and that the path of thriving with adhd is to accept that these are traits with two sides.
You're right that adhd is just a poorly categorized label for a broad range of behavioral patterns
However, when it comes to thriving with adhd, coming to terms with it first can be a crucial step in your journey, where accepting and embracing and understanding your two sided traits can encourage you to pursuing better habits and lifestyles that are more constructive to your traits
To thrive with adhd, you gotta get real with it, which includes embracing it as well as learning to find a way to make it work for you
And there are a lot of people who need to be reminded that there is nothing wrong with them, that they're not broken. There is a path for them as well and that they've already been walking on it and they're exactly where they gotta be right now
I have ADHD and the only thing I could focus on is when this guy says o's his accent is awesome lol.

I am working on programming business, and I can imagine how much fun I will have when I start to travel the world :P ADHD is blessing because you are never bored. Books can be tricky to read though.
Fantastic "reframing" of our skill set! Thank you for sharing this. Suzzanne

I totally agree. What job did you end up doing well in?

Hey! I normally don't comment on youtube, but I got diagnosed very recently. I had gotten comments from SO MANY people around me that I was "soo ADHD" or something alike and really struggling in college, not understanding why. With everyone around me hinting ADHD I went to a psychologist who specialized in ADHD where I answered A BUNCCHH of questions. After seeing my answers I was referred to a psychiatrist where I had to answer more questions a bunch of time...
SORRY so yeah find a psychologist in your country that specializes in ADHD.

Watching it at x1.5 speed helps :)
No one is talking about ADHD in young adults ( 18- 25)!
good video. I also felt I am listening to Orm from Nordmen

Please explain x
Adhd is a symptom of untreated thryroid disorder.xx
Sarah jones ooh thank you x
Yes, for some people. I think that it gets misdiagnosed very often. For some it is the root cause of other symptoms and the other way around for others.
The general public just work on a different bandwidth and people without it don't understand people with it so mentally they just try to steer away from these people. So segregated cause they don't want too try too understand them. And what they don't understand how exhausting and the actual mental compacity wich is actually very high intelligence. It's like they're doing multiplication and your doing algebra
ADHD is hard
Aye
Same
You'll be fine. You have the advantage of at least knowing you have it. Many of us, maybe most of us, didn't. We went through life failing and not knowing why and being blamed for it.
Did you know ADHD can be mistaken for narcissism?
@@ASJacob interesting how you found out that way.

Hello!! I have ADHD, and moved to a quiet place in Spain. Believe me; It did not work!!
What?
Maybe it's a little stunted but I'm pretty sure English is his second language. Doesn't make giving speeches easy either, the tones can come across differently between languages.
Blah blah blah blah adhd blah blah blah student blah blah blah blah move to France blah blah blah.
Sometimes things are better in the original language to preserve content and delivery. In these situations, I would much rather watch a recording, with subtitles in the respective languages we might be listening in. If that was up for discussion. Because all this sh** was super confusing.
Or wait...was that the point? An ADHD speaker, speaking on the subject? Because I couldn't finish it; obviously~
Hehe I totally agree. His Norwegian accent and poor choice of words/phrases is really infuriating. XD
