Hello Tuula, your advice for the viewer who has lost her crochet mojo was spot on. Over the years, I've stopped quilting completely for several months, then I would just knit non-stop. Now I cannot put down my crochet hook! What you suggested was kind and considerate.
I second that sentiment. I find that having fibers and projects of different scale does help as well. I think I've fiddled with every size of fiber from 6 down into some of the numbered thread sizes and it helps keep things fresh. Sometimes it's nice to just pull out a little embroidery floss and make little earrings or decorations or something.
This kind of video is SO helpful! Sometimes I don’t even know what to ask, but I find that the issues you address are ones I also need help on. Plus, I really enjoy the photos and videos of where you are! I love where I live in western Washington, USA, but the photos from where you live are wonderful! Thank you for all you share with us. ❤
Thank you so much! I'm the same in that when someone talks about a problem, I realise I may have it too without having realised! Glad you like the photos of my surroundings!
I too would lose interest crocheting, because I didn’t know too many types of stitches. But now with TH-cam, I have learned so many different patterns that I’m obsessed. I don’t stress on doing it every day. My mood will dictate that. ♥️
I agree! I’ve lost motivation before but crocheting always finds its way back to me. I always enjoy it every time I gain back the motivation. The love for it will always be there, you just need to take breaks. Thanks for this video!
Your video are always helpful. I learn a lot every time. Sometimes I learn just to do things slightly different and sometimes new ideas. I appreciate you very much.
Haha I think that was my question about the housework 😀. I've been married 50 years and yes he does help! He just brought me my coffee while I am crocheting and watching this video. Great tips!
I did not know that there was such a thing as the blanket stitch. I have only been crocheting since mid-winter 2024 and am learning everyday. Also #3. I had seen the first part of that stitch (putting the hook thru the back of the stitch and pulling the stitch thru BUT no one has ever shown me the next part - pulling up the stitch and then going back in thru the front to pull up another stitch and then ending up with 2 stitches on the hook ready for the single crochet. Thank you!
Wonderful! Yes, there are different ways of doing always the same in #3 but I can only remember this one I have learned - although I rarely use it because slip stitches don't bother me!
Oh yes. That helped me understand the join on a circle stopped moving with a sc into the same slip stitch space! I have crocheted a long time and still learning.
Thank you! After many people asked about the garland I finally made a video about it a few months ago, until then it had only been a paid written pattern. It was originally in a magazine, designed by me, and after 6 months designers are allowed to sell designs themselves too. The video is here th-cam.com/video/izpLKQAlFOU/w-d-xo.html
Oh nice, Stockholm is lovely! It is just across the sea from my home town and those large cruise ships go back and forth all the time. It is a nice 23-hour trip, just get on the boat, go to Stockholm and back, not even getting off the ship.
It's 6:00a here & I've been up all night trying to get what should have been a fairly easy+ square conquered. Mini squares have totally captivated me lately & I thought I was up for a little more challenging pattern than granny squares. I was wrong. When your video popped up, all I could see was problem fixing & your name. Now I can't stop singing, "How do you solve a problem like Maria" from The Sound of Music", but I keep trying to change the lyrics to make Maria be the problem solver, not the problem. I do have some questions but I'll wait until (when/if) I'm not deliriously scatter-brained to ask. 🤪🤪🤪
Thank you for the clear, closeup video on the last tip! I sometimes lose track of where to put the last stitch of a SC row and where to start the next one. I know I will watch this segment again if I am struggling with that particular problem.
Dear Tuula, It is lovely to hear your voice again. My favorites points are The chainless join and dealing with the traveling circle join. The granny square joining was very helpful too. Thank you!
Thank you Tuula! I always have trouble finding the beginning when sewing pieces together and I always have to fudge in order to make it look decent. I'll give your tip a try next time.
Hi Tulla, I always learn something from your videos. Even the techniques I use often are good to watch you do. It helps me refine my skill. Thank you! You are a joy to watch.
The "no slip stitch" was so absolutely helpful! Thank you so much! I do wish I could add a photo to show how much that piece of advice has helped me but I guess you're just going to have to take my word for it. 😂
Dear Tuula, Thank you for sharing, I always learn something new from you. Even though I’ve seen your video you showed when you were explaining that the mattress stitch needs to line up so it doesn’t shift when pulling the ends - I actually now understand ‘why’ it’s done this way. I also agree with you about taking a break and not pushing yourself if you lack the motivation. Thank you ☺️ Take care and God’s blessings to you and all 🙏🏽💜🧶🥰😻🐶
Hello Tuula I have been crocheting for decades but each time I try to make a hat or round object my stitch count is always off. Your last tip the start of round shifting was just perfect. Very clear, close up camera work. I now know I was not only working into the chain-1 but also into the same stitch. Thank you very much. I enjoy all of your videos.
Love all your answers, especially the one about loosing motivation. I just went through a few months like that, my hands wanted to be busy but I just couldn’t start anything and I have so many projects I want to do! So, I just started one of three blankets I have to do before Christmas and I will make them, but I’ll intersperse a couple of other things in between. I like to finish one thing before I start another, I know myself and if I have many wips at one time I won’t finish any.
Glad to hear! Last year I changed my channel name from Crochet and Knitting to just Crochet so I probably won't be doing knitting even though I knot and crochet equally.
Tuula, I just love your videos. Thank you for passing along your knowledge! And, I absolutely LOVE your sofa! (I know, weird thing to say, but I noticed it in the video and I love it so much!).
Thank you! I really fell in love with that sofa, both the shape and the colour! I also have a chair of the same. It is important to be surrounded by items that make us happy
I'm not sure if you have covered this, but I'm lately having trouble making my edges straight. They end up going further and further out - no matter how carefully I try to keep them straight
Hello TuulaMaaria, thank you for your videos. My question is: I’m making a crochet baby blanket and the pattern calls for cotton yarn. Is cotton warm? I want a warm blanket because it’s a gift for a Canadian weather baby. What yarn can I use for a warm blanket?
Cotton is not warm. I always use wool for baby blankets, or wool mixed with alpaca or something else to make it even warmer. It may be nest to choose superwash treated wool so it can be washed in a machine. Depends a bit if the blanket will be mainly used inside or outside. If outside, it doesn't need to be vaey soft because it will be over clothes. If mainly inside, I prefer merino wool. Also wool and cotton mixes can be good for a blanket but not quite as warm. I would never use acrylic for a baby although you see acrylic baby yarn.
Hello, Tuula! I, too, have a question for you. How do you find the end of a new skein of yarn so that it pulls from the center? I have much difficulty with this, so I usually have to pull from the outside of the skein. Any advice?
One thing that helps with some skeins is to look for the larger hole in the skein and start from that side. Then you often need to put fingers in to loosen to get to the start. But sometimes it still brings out a lot of tangled yarn! In spite of that, I never start from the outside, that lasts for the whole skein, the extra yarn coming out just for a while! 😊
I find it varies a bit for me. For US double crochet and shorter, I often chain one, don't count it as a stitch, and then place a full stitch in the same stitch as my chain. For taller stitches, sometimes I use stacked stitches or sometimes I draw my working loop up to just above the right height, yarn over the hook using the slack from the loop, and then working the stitch as normal. It takes some practice but is a good option for some projects.
@ajchapeliere the stacked stitches sound like a good option. But pulling up on a stitch for a chain one. Idk. But I will try it to see if I like it or. I've been doing the chain 2 turn for years. But I use to chain 3 turn then saw the chain 2 was way better. Not as much curve on it. I just find it more to my liking. Lol. Thanks for all your tips Tula. I will give them a try!❤️❤️❤️
When crocheting in the round, like your last example, I never do the slip stitch, I just continue to crochet in a spiral, then I don't have that ugly slip stitch line in the project.
Yes, that works on some projects. I have a video also about not having the slip stitch when you need to have each round a certain height th-cam.com/video/xEQyuNgJZXI/w-d-xo.htmlsi=-5EATwHv4hVCAqso&t=319

Excellent, thank you very much for the slip stitch answer! The others were very helpful too😊
Lovely, thank you!
You should write a crochet book, I would buy it. I love the way you teach.

For starting a double crochet row, I prefer a stacked single crochet. Looks so much better and the edges are straight.
Great, yes, stacked stitches look good and fill the gap that would come from chains!
