- The Happy Camper and his partner Kristine Redmond, and the dogs (Angel and Oliver), head out for an ever changing outdoor camping trip. Making changes along the way, especially these days, seems to be the thing to do. That change there backcountry trip from North Frontenac Northlands Crotch Lake to a road trip to a number of southeastern Ontario Provincial Parks. First night is at Sharbot Lake Provincial Park

I was just at Crotch Lake last week and this week I took the kids to Fitzroy for a few days of camping. We looked at Sharbot Lake but decided on Fitz. Sorry your trip didn't work out but at least you now know you can be a bandana model!

Sharbot Lake IS confusing!! They do have a lot of really nice sites, though. The outhouse near the Day Use Beach wins the award for the WORST smelling outhouse I've ever had the "pleasure" to use. Definitely would score a skunk from Cheryl's Loo Review!! (Loved the Camping with the Coles shout out!)
I’m sorry your trip didn’t work out! I just LOVE the videos you and Kristine make! I get to travel and camp without taking my crippled self any! I AM healing, and I think I’ll be ready to camp by fall. I hope better weather prevails in Ontario, it is such a beautiful place!

You guys keep us entertained! Lol We were camping in Algonquin in June during the fireban so didn't experience the bad firewood. Late May camping in New Hampshire they sold kiln-dried wood from Maine $8.00USD.
My old stomping grounds! I worked here many moons ago as a park warden. I don't recall any walk-in sites though. They must have been added after I left.

My husband and I are convinced they spray the wood down with a hose daily so that the fires can’t get out of control at the campsites. But it would be nice to have an actual campfire while camping. This is one of our biggest issues with Ontario Parks.
In the 90's Killbear had a kiln and sold kiln dried wood. It was very well worth the price.

Sharbot Lake is one of my favourite family camp grounds. I remember arriving there late at night and finding the campground was full. My dad drove around just to see if there was an open site and he did find a small one on a steep slope. So the park let us have it. The tent was of course pitched on this slope and in the morning we woke up at the bottom of the tent on top of each other. However, we still had great fun and I'll never forget that trip even though I was quite young at the time.
Btw, steak on a frying pan is fine. It's no different than cooking on a gas BBQ, which is no different than cooking on a stove top.
Yup, sounds like my experience just about every time I go to a front country park. And I would have lost it as well if another dog went to attack my dog and acted aggressive towards me. The owner would be lucky if I let the dog live. I love dogs more than people but there comes a limit. Come on dogs, have your owners spayed and neutered and keep them on a leash. Its not the dogs I blame. Anyways, thanks for bringing us along. Get well soon Angel.
I loved Sharbot Lake on my last visit there. Sorry it has gotten louder there now. 😥The sites that back onto Black Lake are awesome.

I'm heading to do the Crotch Lake loop tomorrow with my Dad. Its supposed to be real hot and rain a bit, but hoping for the best!

I remember after the storm of the century in 1999 Rondeau would use the wood from all the down trees and we would split, package and sell it back to thecampers. Those were the good ole days before they started outsourcing the wood.

I was also just at Sharbot Lake with my family. We stayed at #5 in the beachfront . Our site and the ones next to ours( on both ends) were pretty nice, decent sized and quieter than the sites closer to the highway. The walk in and some of the drive in sites just off the lake in the section in-between the two beaches appeared to be decent in size and quality. So many small sites with hilly, narrow (two way) roads though. I agree, Sharbot Lake is bettered geared towards trnters and those in small trailers. Beware of #16 in the beachfront....literally right off of the highway with no buffer....it would have been a lovely and large site, had it been located better with some privacy, separating sites; (what a shame as it felt like you were about to get run over by a Mac truck standing there! Your section seemed to be the quietest when I was able to break away for a bit from my family to walk around o und. Unfortunately, that area is too far away from the fun beach es and playground, that are "must haves" for my children while we are frontcountry camping.

@@TheHappyCamper Glad yo hear you liked your site; it did look nice. If you went later on that same week we were there, good thing you didnt book #4, because a family with children around my boys age, was on that site for a week and our children enjoyed playing together while we were there. LOL! 😁🤣

I don't think I've been to an Ontario park where the wood was not wet. I want to know why they don't sell dry/seasoned wood or discount the crap they do sell.

I have one. It works. Just forgot to pack it this time. We were planned on doing interior camping.
We just got back from an Ontario 3 week road trip. We camped in Neys PP, Sleeping Giant PP, Blue Lake PP, Rushing River PP. and Mississagi PP (Elliot Lake), drove through Caliper lake PP and Sioux Narrows PP and they were in rough shape. All these parks sold highly priced soggy wood bits, likely rummaged from the ground, and bagged in odd sizes and lengths. There is no seasoned firewood anywhere in Ontario Parks that I visited. Did they retire the experienced Park Rangers and replace them with High School graduates who play video games on their off hours? Toilets did not flush properly in Caliper. The one shower we used in another park leaked every which way due to broken seals. Is Ontario financially broke?
Alot of the wood for algonquin park and surrounding parks does infact come from the Toronto area. My freinds is in the logging business and told me about it .
In Maine we sometimes have lobsters first night out - sometimes surf and turf. :)

On your fire wood request for information, all I can say is I think the park should organize group bonfires since the air pollution from so many campfires in campgrounds makes it very hard for me to breathe with my asthma. Plus a group campfire would allow more social activities between campers.
Sadly ontario parks south of north bay / sudbury is full of trailer park types and citiots with generators and music.

Too many dog owners don’t respect other campers and let their dogs roam around. That’s one of the reasons we stopped going to Provincial Parks. And at most Provincial Parks the wood they sell you is terrible. We used to go to Sharbot yearly 3 or 4 times during the summer. And we had no choice but to bring our own wood. The last couple years the ticks were very bad. And I hear it’s still the same.
We got lucky with the ticks. None on the dogs or ourselves
I don't front country camp anymore. But if I did I would save the firewood bags and put cheap dry wood from home in them. Nobody would know the difference. Notwithstanding "self-interest". I would ensure no invasive bugs would come along...no ash trees.

I really do hope you reported about the dog cause obviously people like that are to stupid to figure it out on their own and ruin it for other people. Same as the people that left their fire burning. Where has common sense gone. Do hope to see you’s out again. Just love your adventures together. I think she is a keeper, if not just for her laugh.😘

I do a lot of front country camping. Many times I have seen right under the "No dogs allowed" sign on the beach, dog owners walking their off leash dogs. People do not seem to care about respecting others any more. 😢😢

Do you ever bring a wood moisture meter with you when you plan on buying wood for campfires. I would and if the wood is less than 20% than I would buy it.

I'm close to sharbot lake and have not been to this park.
Sadly, the wood seems to be bad where ever you go. Was recently in Nova Scotia camping at Kejimkujik National Park. Same grade of wood. We had to split it to thumb size to get it to burn, and watched the larger pieces boil water out the ends. This is why you see firewood for private sale outside practically every park. People pay for wood that actually burns.
And to be cynical, wood that doesn't burn well works in the park's favor. Poor burning wood means no large camp fires getting out of control. You saw the reason in the neighboring campsite.
As for the wet wood, I feel like this is an annoyance in the summer. In the winter this has the potential to be quite dangerous. With hot tenting becoming more popular every year I'm concerned not everyone understands the danger of burning this stuff in the hot tent all night.
At the very least parks should be warning people that the garbage wood they sell is not suitable for this.
Btw. Did you check the forecast? Did it actually storm?
They say not to move wood because of the beetle but Algonquins wood source comes from MILES away.
You need some Irish fiddle music to help with the tempo for pumping up the air mattresses.

Sorry your trip was not as you planned. I too am a animal lover and always take my dog with me. She is always, ALWAYS on a leash of some kind. The main reason is so I can control her and keep her from getting lost..ie. Squirel - gone. LOL.
I have had a few incidents with dogs off leash, and at worst I just chased the dog away. I do keep bear spray with me always, not just for bears. But for any wondering animal I cant scare off, or dogs, or their owners.

they don't want you to bring your own wood but they sell you garbage, sigh. I went by that park on my way to Holleford. there is a meteorite impact site there. It is the most impressive thing I have seen although the one by Brent in Algonquin Park is more natural as there are no farms and houses around.
Cool. I never heard about that meteorite spot. I should check it out. Kristine and I have planned to head back out next week to finish our tour.
@@TheHappyCamper It is impressive, it became a bit of an obsession a few years ago. The Brent one in Algonquin is even better as it has a viewing tower and there is a trail going down to the bottom and portage trails if you want to canoe on the two lakes that formed.
The Holleford one is good also, you can stand on one side and see the road dip and come back up the other side. You can also drive up to the centre, there is a little plaque explaining things. That is on Holleford Rd.
If you didnt you might want to report the previous campers that left the fire going. They would be registered. You have the evidence right here! Something that might teach them is a stiff fine.
I did report it to the maintenance - answer I got "Well, it seems to be out, now." Oh well.

I just dont get the park's selling crap wood ive run into that every time ive purchased their wood it's to expensive dosnt even burn. wish I knew were they got it, Not good about that aggressive dog if aggressive it should not be running free it could have attact a child as well as other dogs those individual's should have been reported to the parks people , Poor Angel , sad that you had such a bad experience .
Calmly lost your cool lol It baffles me that people still go to public areas with their dogs not on a leash because at the end of the day it's the pet that will suffer any consequences for the owners stupidity. You're the fourth person I've seen in a week have to put out someone else's fire, like I told Evan L5, sometimes it takes everything I have not to hate people! Aside from those and the humidity, it looks like you still had a good time. Oh, and btw, I find it funny that you can find your way through a thick bush and plethora of lakes and rivers, but got lost in a parking lot hahaha

2 I hope you reported the jerks with the off-leash dog who attacked you. As a dog owner, I get so freaking annoyed with people who have their dogs off-leash in NOT off-leash areas and they just yell at you from 200 metres away "oh dont worry he's friendly" as the dog is attaching itself to your calf. 🤬
3, yep! I was supposed to be in the backcountry for a solo trip that same week and I looked at the weather and said "hard NOPE" having a tree fall on me in a tornado while I'm backpacking isn’t on my bucket list. Plus the heat and humidity was just too muckin fuch. I much prefer October.

Ontario parks should change their arrival time. 2:00 is ridiculous. 12:00pm makes sense. I think this should also apply to the backcountry sites as well. I want to enjoy my first day, not set up then immediately make dinner.
Make it 12:00 PM and the campers in the site complain that they are being rushed to pack up and leave.
It used to be that check out time was 11AM, and 2PM was arrival time, giving the park attendants 3 hours to clean up the campsite between campers. That got changed.
@@garlandbest6322 On the day your leaving don't people want to get home and unpack/organize their camping stuff? I've always got up at 7:00/8:00 the latest. So I'm on the road at 10:00 the latest so I can get home and deal with gear. The last day of camp for me anyway never includes hiking or canoeing.
Wym 2pm is far better. Can show up at the park first thing in morning and do whatever u want till 2. Then setup camp. Late checkout allows the camper to enjoy the morning and eat lunch before hitting the road. Your literally losing a vacation day doing it your way. And no the camp gear gets aired out the following day.
@@doomvanhardcore8313 It's not even a day more like a quarter vacation day. I'm paying to stay the night not the next 6 hours in the morning. Why couldn't you pack up by 12:00pm then do your hike or lunch allowing other campers to set up early. You must have a lot of time on your hands to unpack the day after and get home late on a Sunday/last camp day.
@@ktownc936 Speaking for myself from 10 years ago, getting teenage kids up before 9AM was a challenge, the family enjoyed a nice leisurely breakfast, and then you need to wash dishes and start to pack things up and it's already 10:30 in the morning. I know many people who even after they pack and leave their site still go to the beach to swim and play. Stretch their time out as much as possible, so that you don't get home till it's dark. Dump the gear in the house and the next day after you return from work, air out your gear, put it away.
But hey, the world has many different people. Some are morning people, some are nighthawks. You fit the morning person profile.

Park wood is terrible always has been always will be and expensive.
Ontario Parks store all their campfire wood in the lake and every May they bring it out and sell it to the camper’s.
But seriously I don’t know it’s garbage wood and expensive and they couldn’t care less what anyone thinks about it 🙄
